A golden-hour API can turn a location and date into the times when the Sun is near the horizon; a 3D globe can make those results easier to explore across places. The core is solar-event calculation, not the globe itself. The specific implementation behind the project named in the original headline—including its endpoint, rendering library, hosting and accuracy—has not been independently established, so this guide separates documented tools and methods from details that remain unknown.
What does a golden-hour API actually calculate?
It estimates solar events for a place and date, then identifies the intervals commonly called golden hour. To produce useful times, a system needs a latitude, longitude, date, a time basis and a defined convention for what counts as sunrise or sunset. A globe can display or help select locations, but it does not determine whether those calculations are correct.

In SunCalc’s terminology, goldenHourEnd marks the end of the morning golden-hour period, while goldenHour marks the start of the evening period. Its event set also includes sunrise, sunset, dawn, dusk and solar noon. An API that labels a period simply “golden hour” should make clear which boundary it returns and how it defines the period.
Why horizon conventions matter
Sunrise and sunset are calculated using a convention for the Sun’s position relative to the horizon. NOAA’s Global Monitoring Laboratory uses a zenith angle of 90.833° for sunrise and sunset, describing it as an approximate correction for atmospheric refraction and the apparent size of the solar disk. That is a calculation convention, not a promise that a predicted event will match the observed horizon at every location and in every atmospheric condition.

NOAA publishes equations for sunrise, sunset and solar noon. Those equations provide a documented foundation for implementing solar-event calculations, but a production service still has to handle coordinates, dates, time conversion and exceptional cases consistently.
Is there a free golden-hour API?
Yes. Sunrise-Sunset.org documents a free JSON API that accepts latitude and longitude and can return golden-hour information along with sunrise, sunset, twilight, solar-position and moon data. It requires visible attribution on the page or app that displays its data, so check its current terms before integrating it.

Other options serve different needs. The U.S. Naval Observatory offers rise, set, transit and civil-twilight data for a specified location, with documented date coverage from 1700 through 2100 and a GeoJSON response option. SunCalc is a JavaScript library for calculating solar and lunar information locally, rather than relying on a hosted API for each calculation.

| Option | What the documentation describes | Where it may fit | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunrise-Sunset.org | JSON results including sunrise, sunset, twilight, golden hour, solar position and moon fields | An application that wants a hosted response with golden-hour data | Visible attribution is required when showing its data. Check current operational and commercial terms. |
| U.S. Naval Observatory | Sun rise, set and transit times, civil twilight, and GeoJSON; supported dates from 1700 through 2100 | A service needing documented rise/set/transit or twilight information | The described coverage does not establish a golden-hour field. |
| SunCalc | Local JavaScript calculations for sun position, sunlight phases, moon position, moonrise and moonset, and lunar phase | A JavaScript application that prefers local calculation over a per-request network dependency | Rise/set-related results can be null at high latitudes; account for its documented always-up and always-down conditions. |
These are not interchangeable guarantees. Compare the event fields you need, whether calculations happen remotely or locally, the format and time basis of returned values, high-latitude behavior and the applicable usage terms. For hosted services, verify current rate limits and commercial permissions in the service’s own documentation; they are not established by the feature summaries above.
How do you calculate golden hour from latitude and longitude?
At a high level, validate the coordinates and date, calculate the relevant solar events using a stated convention, and convert the results into the time zone you want to show. The exact formulas and output schema depend on the implementation; NOAA’s published sunrise, sunset and solar-noon equations are one documented reference, while SunCalc offers a ready-made local JavaScript option.
- Validate the input. Require latitude and longitude in the expected numeric format and geographic ranges. Associate the request with an explicit date; a location alone is not enough to identify the day’s events.
- Choose a calculation method and convention. Document whether the implementation uses a library or its own equations, and define the sunrise/sunset horizon convention. NOAA’s 90.833° zenith is one published convention.
- Calculate events in a consistent time basis. Keep the calculation’s time basis explicit rather than assuming that a server’s local clock corresponds to the requested location.
- Convert for display. Apply the location’s time zone when presenting civil clock times. Coordinate-based solar calculations and timezone conversion are separate responsibilities; longitude alone does not encode local daylight-saving rules.
- Return events and edge-case status honestly. Include the event names and time basis in the response design, and represent absent events as absent rather than inventing a time.
This is an implementation outline, not a claim about the titled project’s endpoint or code. No canonical repository, schema, tested accuracy figure or rendering stack for that particular project is established here.

How should an API handle polar day and polar night?
It should not manufacture sunrise or sunset times when those events do not occur for the requested location and date. A response should distinguish a missing event from a failed request and, where supported by the calculation method, communicate whether the Sun remains above or below the relevant horizon.
SunCalc documents that rise/set-related values can be null at high latitudes and reports alwaysUp or alwaysDown conditions. That behavior gives an application a practical model: preserve the null event in the data, expose the condition clearly, and let the interface explain what it means. Do not assume that every provider uses the same field names or edge-case semantics.
- Null event: the requested rise or set event did not occur under the calculation’s conventions.
- Always up or always down: show the documented condition when the chosen calculation provides it.
- Invalid request or calculation failure: report an error separately from a valid date with no rise or set event.
What does the 3D globe add?
A globe gives people a spatial way to choose a location, compare places and inspect where daylight phases occur. It is a presentation layer: the same solar calculation should remain valid whether a coordinate came from a globe click, a search field or an API request.

- 【Boost Brainpower】Engage in assembly the model to sharpen your logical thinking and refine your mental skills. This process cultivates greater patience and attention to detail. Enjoy a rewarding sense of accomplishment and proudly showcase your creation to friends and family.
A sound data pipeline keeps those concerns separate: obtain and validate coordinates, calculate events for the selected date, convert them into the intended display time basis, then render the result at the correct location on the globe. This separation makes it easier to test calculations independently from visual interaction and to distinguish a map-display problem from a solar-time problem.
The available project information does not identify its globe engine, map tiles, hosting setup or measured accuracy. Those details should not be inferred from the fact that the project is described as a 3D globe. If choosing a rendering stack for a new implementation, treat globe interaction and data correctness as separate design decisions.

- Event coverage: confirm whether you need sunrise and sunset only, twilight, golden-hour boundaries, solar position or moon data.
- Time semantics: determine whether results are local clock strings or instants that your application must convert. Make the displayed time zone apparent to users.
- Polar behavior: check how missing rise/set events and continuous daylight or darkness are represented.
- Attribution and terms: Sunrise-Sunset.org explicitly requires visible credit when its data is shown. Check the current terms for any other service or library you use.
- Network dependence: a hosted API makes a request to an external service; local JavaScript calculations avoid a per-calculation network dependency but put the calculation and its maintenance in your application.
- Input and display testing: test ordinary locations as well as dates and latitudes where an event may be absent, and verify that the displayed location and time zone match the user’s selection.
What is known about the project behind the headline?
The headline describes a free golden-hour API paired with a 3D globe, but the project’s exact repository and implementation details are not established. There is no confirmed endpoint schema, rendering library, map provider, hosting arrangement, rate limit or author-claimed accuracy figure to report. The documented services and calculation approaches above show how a similar system can be built or evaluated without attributing unverified technical choices to that particular project.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use golden-hour results in a commercial app?
It depends on the provider’s current terms, not just whether its API is free to access. Sunrise-Sunset.org’s documented requirement is visible attribution when displaying its data; confirm any additional commercial-use conditions directly with the service.
Recommended Free Tools
Does longitude tell an app the correct local time zone?
No. Longitude is a geographic coordinate, while civil time zones and daylight-saving rules are political and can change. A location-based display needs a reliable way to associate the selected place with its applicable time zone.
Can I get golden-hour times without an internet connection?
A local calculation approach can work offline after the needed code is available; SunCalc is a JavaScript option for local solar and lunar calculations. A hosted API, by contrast, depends on reaching that service when making a request.
Why might the predicted golden hour look different from the light outside?
The prediction is based on event definitions and calculated solar position, while the appearance of light also depends on local horizon obstructions and atmospheric conditions. The documented NOAA horizon convention is an approximation, not a site-specific observation.
