Choose GOG if your priority is DRM-free access to downloaded single-player games, optional launcher use, backup installers, or selecting an available older build. Choose Steam if you prefer a centralized client and are comfortable preparing Offline Mode before losing connectivity. GOG’s voluntary refund window is 30 days, including after downloading and playing, while Steam’s standard game rule is 14 days from purchase and under two hours played. Those are platform policies, not guarantees for every title: a game can still require an external launcher, a server, or a separate account. The practical difference is how much control each store gives you over a playable local copy, updates, and the refund process.

What is the real difference between GOG and Steam DRM?
DRM (digital-rights management) controls how software verifies access or restricts copying. It is not the same thing as requiring an internet connection: a game can be DRM-free yet offer online-only multiplayer, and a game with DRM can sometimes run offline after a successful ownership check.

Steam uses a client-based ownership check, and individual games may add other DRM or launcher requirements. Valve’s subscriber agreement says, “The Content and Services are licensed, not sold,” and a Steam account is required; a client and an internet connection may be required for some content. Therefore, “DRM-free” is a useful GOG catalog distinction, but it does not mean every GOG feature works without a network. Conversely, Steam’s DRM layer does not prove that every Steam title has identical restrictions. Check the individual store listing for external launchers, account links, always-online requirements and the specific modes you intend to use.
Can I play GOG games without GOG GALAXY?
Yes. GALAXY is optional for accessing a GOG game’s offline single-player mode. You can download installers or backup copies, install the game locally and launch that single-player mode without keeping the launcher running.
What the optional launcher does and does not change
- GALAXY can manage installation, updates and some platform features, but it is not a prerequisite for the offline single-player commitment.
- A downloaded installer is a local copy you can preserve on another drive. GOG explicitly discusses making backup copies; a portable external SSD or a USB flash drive is simply storage for those installers, not a way to remove a game’s online requirements.
- Multiplayer, seasonal events, leaderboards, cloud-connected features and other services can still depend on servers. The store page for the particular game is the authority for those requirements.
For a travel or outage setup, download the installers while connected, install and launch the game once, and verify that the mode you need is actually single-player. Keep the installer and any required patches together so you can restore the same build later.
Does Steam work without an internet connection?
Steam Offline Mode can work, but it must be prepared while you are online. It cannot make an online-required game or a game that depends on an external launcher function without connectivity.
Prepare Steam Offline Mode before you disconnect
- Connect to the internet and start Steam. Make sure your credentials are remembered so the client can authenticate without asking for a fresh sign-in.
- Let Steam finish downloading updates for the client and every game you plan to use.
- Launch each intended game once while online. This checks for first-run setup, third-party launchers, licensing prompts or other requirements that may not be visible until launch.
- Close the games, open the Steam menu and choose Go Offline. Confirm the restart into Offline Mode before disconnecting.
- Test the game after the restart while you still have a connection available as a fallback. If it needs a server, an external launcher or an online account check, Offline Mode will not bypass that dependency.
Valve’s Offline Mode instructions also warn that Offline Mode pauses client and game updates. That is useful during travel because a sudden patch cannot consume your connection, but it means you will need to return online before receiving fixes or new content.

Why a game can fail even when Steam itself is offline-ready
Steam’s client status and a game’s design are separate. An always-online title, a game whose authentication is handled by another launcher, or a title that requires a live service can fail after Steam enters Offline Mode. A single-player game may work, but only after its own first-run checks and files have been completed.
How do updates differ on GOG and Steam?
GOG gives you more explicit control when a listed older build exists; Steam is designed to deliver the current published build through its client. Neither service promises every historical version of every game.
GOG: turn off automatic updates or roll back an available build
For an installed game in GALAXY, open the game’s page, choose the settings or customization controls, disable automatic updates, and use the version selector when one is offered. GOG documents this as a rollback feature: you can select a previous version that is still listed for that title. The option is game-specific, and an earlier build may not be available indefinitely.
Detailed controls and limitations are described in GOG’s rollback documentation. If you install from an offline installer instead of GALAXY, you control when to download and apply a newer installer; keep your existing installer if you need to preserve a known-compatible build.
Steam: current-build distribution through the client
Steam distributes updates in-client. Valve tells developers that players with an installed game may have to download an update before launching again. Steam’s normal interface can schedule or pause downloads, but the platform does not provide a universal promise that every old public build will remain selectable. A developer can replace the published build or remove an old branch.

Before accepting an update, check whether the game’s developer documents a beta branch, legacy branch or other supported version channel. Do not assume that a title has one merely because another Steam game does. If you need a stable offline copy, plan that requirement before the update and retain installers or supported build files where the game’s license and distribution method allow it.
Which update model suits which player?
- Choose GOG’s model when compatibility with an older operating system, a mod set or a long-term offline archive matters and the title exposes the desired build.

Can I refund a game after playing it?
GOG and Steam use materially different standard rules. GOG accepts a voluntary refund request within 30 days, even after downloading and playing, subject to safeguards against abuse. Steam’s standard game offer requires a request within 14 days of purchase and less than two hours of play, although Valve says it will consider requests outside those conditions.
GOG refund steps
- Sign in to your GOG account and open Order History.
- Select the order containing the game and choose the refund-request option.
- Follow the form to request either GOG wallet funds or a return to the original payment method, where that choice is available.
- Read the policy response for exceptions or a proposed wallet-credit alternative before confirming.
The 30-day period is a policy window, not a promise that every request is approved automatically. GOG reserves the right to refuse abusive individual requests, and some cases may be offered as wallet funds instead of a payment reversal. The current terms are in GOG’s voluntary refund policy.
Steam refund steps
- Open Steam Support and sign in to the account that made the purchase.
- Choose the purchase from the listed help options and select the refund request.
- Submit the reason and preferred return destination when prompted.
- Wait for Valve’s decision. An approved refund is returned to a supported original payment method or to Steam Wallet.
Steam’s standard game conditions are a request within 14 days and fewer than two hours played. Valve identifies April 23, 2024 as the last update to its Steam Refunds information and says requests outside the standard rules can still be submitted for review. A purchase made outside Steam, such as a third-party key, is not refunded by Valve.

Which platform is better for offline ownership and backups?
If your practical goal is to keep a playable single-player copy independent of a launcher, GOG is the stronger fit. Its DRM-free positioning, optional GALAXY use and downloadable backup installers reduce the number of services that must be available at launch. That is practical control over a downloaded copy, not ownership of the game’s intellectual property.
Steam can still be suitable for offline play when you prepare the client, update the files and confirm the game’s requirements in advance. The trade-off is that your access remains tied to the Steam account and client’s licensing checks, and a third-party launcher or online service can override the client’s Offline Mode.
A sensible backup routine
- Download installers or complete the required installation while online.

Which should you choose: GOG or Steam?
Pick GOG when independence from a launcher, DRM-free access to a downloaded single-player copy, backups and an available older build are the deciding factors. Pick Steam when a single client, centralized updates and its broader account ecosystem matter more, and you are willing to prepare Offline Mode before disconnecting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I copy a GOG installer to another computer?
