Yes—you can give an AI coding assistant reliable memory between sessions by using Git hooks as deterministic capture and recall points, then routing selected events through an n8n workflow. A session-start hook retrieves a small, approved memory record for the current repository and branch; prompt, tool, and session-end hooks submit only durable facts such as architecture decisions, working commands, recurring failures, and explicit preferences. n8n validates, redacts, deduplicates, summarizes, and stores those facts, then returns a bounded context block for the next session.
This design is safer than asking an agent to “remember” because the lifecycle is explicit and reviewable. It also has sharp limits: hook names and payloads differ between Copilot CLI, cloud agent, VS Code, and other surfaces; synchronous hooks can block work; and stale or sensitive notes can damage answers unless you enforce scope, expiry, and deletion.

What does a Git-hook memory system actually do?
A hook is a command run at a defined point in an agent’s workflow. GitHub describes hooks as “a way of executing custom shell commands at strategic points in an agent’s workflow.” In a memory system, those callbacks become a small event pipeline rather than a general-purpose transcript logger.
- Recall: a session-start callback identifies the repository and branch, requests the latest approved memory, and injects a size-limited context block.
- Capture: prompt, tool, error, stop, and session-end callbacks emit events when they contain information likely to remain useful.
- Processing: n8n validates the event, removes secrets and personal data, classifies durable facts versus transient activity, deduplicates similar entries, and summarizes the remainder.
- Storage: a database or document store keeps records keyed by repository, branch, user scope, and retention class.
The assistant still reads the current files and instructions first. Memory is supplemental context, not authority. A stored decision must never override a changed configuration, a newer instruction, or the repository itself.

Which lifecycle events should I use?
Use the smallest set of events that gives you dependable recall and useful capture. GitHub documents events including sessionStart, sessionEnd, userPromptSubmitted, preToolUse, postToolUse, agentStop, subagentStop, and errorOccurred; availability and payloads vary by product surface.
| Event | Memory role | Recommended treatment |
|---|---|---|
sessionStart |
Recall | Fetch approved, recent context and inject a bounded block. |
userPromptSubmitted |
Capture intent | Keep only explicit preferences, decisions, constraints, or durable goals. |
preToolUse |
Validation and context | Use for policy checks; do not archive every command or parameter. |
postToolUse |
Capture outcomes | Record commands that worked, meaningful outputs, and stable fixes; debounce repeats. |
errorOccurred |
Failure learning | Store recurring, diagnosed failures, not raw logs containing credentials or paths. |
agentStop or subagentStop |
Checkpoint | Capture a concise result when a task produced a decision or reusable procedure. |
sessionEnd |
Final persistence | Write a compact summary and mark its source and retention class. |
Do not assume that an event that can observe an action can also modify it. Some surfaces allow a hook to block or alter a result, while others expose observation only. Confirm the target assistant’s reference before writing handlers.

Start with a strict schema. A predictable record makes redaction, deduplication, expiry, and auditing possible; an unstructured transcript makes all four unreliable.
{
"repository": "stable-repository-id",
"branch": "feature-or-default-branch",
"timestamp": "ISO-8601 time",
"event_type": "sessionEnd",
"fact": "Short, verifiable statement",
"confidence": 0.0,
"source_event": "postToolUse",
"retention_class": "project-decision"
}
Use an internal repository identifier rather than relying only on a display name, which can be duplicated. Keep the branch because a migration branch may intentionally disagree with the default branch. Store the originating event and timestamp so a person can trace and correct a note.
Separate durable facts from transient logs
A durable fact changes how a future session should work: “The service uses PostgreSQL migrations from the db/migrations directory” is durable. “The test command ran at 14:03” is transient unless it revealed a stable command or recurring failure. Make the classifier explicit and permit a “discard” result.

Set confidence and retention together
Confidence describes how strongly the evidence supports a fact; retention describes how long it should be eligible for recall. A confirmed architecture decision can have long retention, while a guessed workaround should expire quickly or require human approval. Never let confidence become a substitute for checking current files.
Where do I configure hooks for each assistant surface?
Repository hooks live in .github/hooks/*.json. Copilot CLI also supports personal hooks in ~/.copilot/hooks/*.json. Cloud-agent configuration must be present on the repository’s default branch, which means a local-only change will not configure cloud runs.
| Surface | Configuration location or requirement | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Repository-based runs | .github/hooks/*.json in the repository |
Event support and whether results can be changed are surface-specific. |
| Copilot CLI | Repository hooks plus optional ~/.copilot/hooks/*.json |
Personal hooks affect the local user and should be reviewed separately from project policy. |
| Cloud agent | Hook configuration on the repository default branch | Do not assume local branch configuration is loaded by cloud jobs. |
| VS Code or another assistant | Use that product’s own hook or extension reference | Do not copy event names, payload fields, or timeout assumptions from another surface. |
Keep handlers portable by putting business logic in a small script and keeping the JSON registration surface-specific. Pass event data through a well-defined interface, then reject unknown fields rather than silently interpreting a payload from a different product.
How do I build the n8n workflow?
A minimal workflow is a fast webhook intake followed by controlled enrichment. n8n is a fair-code automation tool that connects applications and APIs and can run in its hosted service, through npm, or self-hosted.
- Webhook trigger: expose an authenticated endpoint dedicated to memory events. Require a repository identifier, event type, timestamp, and fact candidate; reject oversized bodies.
- Schema validation: check types, allowed event names, timestamp format, repository scope, and maximum text length. Return a clear client error for invalid input.
- Secret and PII redaction: remove tokens, passwords, private keys, session cookies, authorization headers, email addresses, and other personal data before any durable storage. Treat prompts, tool parameters, and tool results as untrusted content.
- Classifier: label the event as durable fact, transient log, policy violation, or discard. Require stronger evidence for architecture claims than for a one-off command result.
- Summarizer: convert accepted material into a short statement with source event, confidence, and retention class. Keep the original event only if your retention policy permits it and it has already been redacted.
- Deduplication: compare normalized repository, branch, fact type, and text so repeated tool output does not create dozens of equivalent memories.
- Storage: write to a database or document store with repository and user scoping. Add an index for active, unexpired records used by session-start recall.
- Response: return quickly with an acknowledgement and, for recall requests, a compact context payload. Do not make the hook wait for embeddings or a lengthy language-model call.
n8n’s standalone agents have session memory by default. Cross-session episodic memory is opt-in and requires an OpenAI credential, so do not confuse a workflow’s event storage with an agent’s built-in session state. If you use a different storage or model, document that choice and its data boundary.

How do I write the session-start recall hook?
The recall hook should be deterministic, bounded, and fail-open for normal coding. It identifies the repository and branch, requests only active records in scope, and injects a clearly labelled context block.
- Resolve the repository identifier from the working tree and obtain the current branch without trusting arbitrary prompt text.
- Send an authenticated request containing only the identifier, branch, user scope, and a short maximum-context value.
- Set a strict timeout. If the service is unavailable, emit a local diagnostic and continue without memory rather than blocking the agent indefinitely.
- Accept only records that pass server-side scope, expiry, and approval checks.
- Format the result as supplemental context, for example: “Project memory; verify against current files.” Never present it as a system instruction or an unconditional command.
- Cap the number of records and total characters. Prefer recent, high-confidence decisions and unresolved recurring failures over old conversational detail.
Keep the injected block small enough that it cannot crowd out the user’s prompt or source files. A memory service should not be able to smuggle new instructions into the assistant by storing prompt-shaped text; sanitize control characters and mark the block as data.
How do I capture prompts and tool calls without storing a transcript?
Capture selectively. The useful unit is a normalized fact, not a complete conversation or every shell command.
- From prompts, retain explicit preferences (“use the project’s existing test runner”) and decisions (“keep the public API backward compatible”).
- From successful tools, retain stable commands, file locations, and procedures that were verified in the repository.
- From failures, retain a diagnosed cause and the working remedy, not a raw stack trace with environment secrets.
- From stop events, retain a concise result only when it changes future work.
Debounce repeated tool logs by hashing a normalized command and outcome within a short window. Before sending data, use shell-safe argument handling and avoid interpolating untrusted text into a command line. Validate input in the hook and again in n8n; the webhook is a second trust boundary, not a replacement for local validation.

Hooks execute synchronously and can block agent execution. Keep the hook’s critical path to validation, a short authenticated request, and a bounded response; move summarization, embeddings, and heavy database work into an asynchronous n8n path.

Protect secrets and personal data
- Redact before storage, not only before display.
- Never log webhook headers, access tokens, passwords, private keys, or complete tool environments.
- Use separate credentials and least-privilege permissions for intake, recall, and administration.
- Encrypt transport and storage, and define who can read a repository’s memory.
Prevent stale or cross-project context
- Require repository and user scoping on every read and write.
- Expire temporary workarounds and mark superseded decisions inactive.
- When branches diverge, prefer branch-specific records; promote a decision only after it is valid on the target branch.
- Give current files and explicit instructions precedence over stored notes.
Design for outages
Use timeouts, bounded retries, and a local failure log that contains no sensitive payload. A failed capture should not stop a coding session. A failed recall should produce no context rather than an invented substitute.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should I use n8n cloud, npm, or self-hosted deployment?
All three are operational choices, not performance guarantees. Choose based on who owns data, credentials, upgrades, and availability.
| Deployment | Advantages | Trade-offs to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Hosted n8n | Less infrastructure to operate and a quick webhook setup. | Review data residency, provider access, credential storage, retention, and service dependency. |
| npm installation | Runs in an environment you control and can fit existing Node.js operations. | You own upgrades, backups, networking, hardening, and process supervision. |
| Self-hosted service | Maximum control over network boundaries, storage location, and retention. | You must maintain the host, patch dependencies, monitor jobs, and protect the exposed webhook. |
Whichever option you choose, keep the memory database and webhook in the same documented security boundary as the repositories they describe. A privacy decision is incomplete if credentials are hosted separately without an access review.

Memory needs an explicit “forget” path because a wrong note can persist longer than the code that caused it. Provide an authenticated operation to delete a single fact, purge a repository or branch, and rebuild active memory from approved records.
- Display the fact, source event, timestamp, confidence, and retention class to an authorized maintainer.
- Allow a maintainer to mark it corrected, superseded, or deleted; keep only the audit metadata required by policy.
- On rebuild, exclude expired and deleted entries, re-run deduplication, and generate a new compact set.
- Test that a deleted fact is absent from recall responses and downstream caches.
Log failures in these controls separately from normal coding output. A system that can save memory but cannot reliably remove it is not ready for sensitive repositories.

What should I test before relying on automated memory?
Test behavior, not just whether a webhook returns HTTP success. The documentation establishes capabilities and constraints, but it does not provide an end-to-end benchmark for recall quality, latency, or cost.
- Start a session on a new branch and verify that only that repository’s approved records appear.
- Submit a prompt containing a fake token and confirm it is redacted before storage.
- Repeat the same tool result and confirm deduplication.
- Change a decision in the repository and verify that the old note is expired or marked superseded.
- Stop n8n or force a timeout and confirm the coding session continues.
- Send malformed, oversized, and prompt-injection-shaped payloads and verify rejection or neutralized storage.
- Delete a fact and confirm it cannot be recalled through another branch or user scope.
Measure your own recall usefulness, hook latency, failure rate, storage growth, and operating cost under realistic workloads. Treat those measurements as local results, not universal properties of Git hooks or n8n.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can this memory work when I am offline?
A remote n8n webhook cannot capture or recall new records while it is unreachable. You can let hooks fail open and optionally queue already-redacted events locally for later delivery, but the queue needs its own size limit, encryption, and replay protection.
How should memory behave when I switch Git branches?
Read branch-specific records first, then optionally include explicitly promoted repository-wide decisions. Do not merge a migration branch’s temporary workaround into every branch without an approval step.
Can I share one memory store with several developers?
Yes, if every record carries repository and user or team scope and the recall query enforces both. Define whether a fact is private, team-approved, or repository-wide, and require authorization before promotion between those classes.
What happens if an assistant surface does not support session-end hooks?
Use the latest supported stop or tool event as a checkpoint and provide a manual flush command that submits an approved summary. The workflow should tolerate missing events instead of assuming every surface emits the same lifecycle.
