GitX is a portable Git workflow skill for AI coding agents that converts a cluttered working tree into reviewable Conventional Commits. Instead of asking an agent to dump every file into one commit, you can preview proposed groups with gitx plan, approve or adjust them, then let gitx create separate commits for features, fixes, tests, and documentation. It also covers branch setup, project checks, pull and push operations, GitHub pull requests and issues, conflict resolution, repository inspection, secret scanning, and shipping a branch. The workflow is designed for compatible Agent Skills tools, including Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, and other clients that support the portable SKILL.md format.
What is GitX, and why does AI-generated Git history become messy?
GitX is an automation skill that sits on top of Git rather than replacing it. Its central job is to inspect the current working tree, infer which edits belong together, and turn those groups into Conventional Commit messages. That matters because one AI coding session commonly touches several unrelated concerns: a feature implementation, a bug fix discovered along the way, tests, and documentation. A single catch-all commit hides those boundaries and makes review, reversion, cherry-picking, and release notes harder.

It can propose multiple logical commits, show the messages it would use, and ask whether you want the separate groups or one combined commit. The result is a history that records intent without requiring you to stage every file manually.
The project is distributed as a portable Agent Skills package and is labeled MIT licensed on its GitHub repository. No published source in this article provides a benchmark, adoption total, or dated performance figure, so GitX should be judged by its workflow and review controls rather than an unverified speed claim.

How does GitX group unrelated edits into logical commits?
The safest entry point is a preview. Run gitx plan in a repository with uncommitted changes. GitX analyzes the diff and proposes commit groups without modifying files or creating commits.
- Inspect the proposal. Read the files and rationale assigned to each group. A useful proposal separates behavior changes from tests and documentation when those changes represent different purposes.
- Check the messages. GitX drafts Conventional Commit subjects from the actual diff. An example plan might contain
feat(auth): add token refresh support, fix(api): handle expired authentication sessions, andtest(auth): cover refresh token behavior. - Choose the grouping. When several groups are found, GitX asks whether to create that number of commits or combine them into one. Keep groups separate when they can be reviewed, reverted, or released independently.
- Run the smart commit. Invoke bare
gitxafter reviewing the plan. GitX creates the approved Conventional Commits from the working-tree changes. - Inspect the result with Git. Use your normal status and log commands, or GitX’s inspection commands, before moving on to a branch push or pull request.
This preview-first design is important with AI-authored code. It lets you reject an incorrect grouping before Git history changes, while still avoiding the tedious process of staging every hunk by hand.

Install the skill through the Skills CLI from a shell:
npx skills add musoyangrigor/gitx-skill --skill gitx
The CLI configures the skill for the selected supported agent. GitX follows the portable SKILL.md Agent Skills format, so the same package is intended to work across compatible clients rather than being tied to one editor. The exact agent-selection prompt and local installation location are handled by the Skills CLI; use the client you normally use for coding and confirm that it supports Agent Skills.
After installation, open a repository containing a Git working tree and test the non-destructive path first:
gitx plan
If the command is unavailable, check that the Skills CLI completed successfully, that the skill was installed for the agent you are invoking, and that you are running the command inside a Git repository. GitX is a workflow skill, not a replacement for Git itself, so the repository still needs a functioning Git installation and normal credentials for any remote operation.

How should I use GitX without losing review control?
Use GitX as a sequence of checkpoints rather than one unattended command. A practical review loop looks like this:
- Start with repository context. Run
gitx statusand, if the tree is unfamiliar, gitx tree. Confirm the current branch and whether changes were already present before the AI session. - Scan before staging. Run
gitx scanwhen the changes may include configuration, generated output, logs, or credentials. Remove anything sensitive before it reaches a commit. - Preview grouping. Run
gitx planand compare each proposed group with the issue or task you intended to solve. - Run project checks. Use
gitx checkto run relevant checks before committing. The exact commands depend on the repository’s configured tooling. - Commit only after inspection. Invoke
gitx, read the confirmation prompts, and verify the resulting history. - Push deliberately. Use
gitx pushonly after reviewing the commits and confirming the remote and branch.
This sequence preserves the distinction between analysis, validation, committing, and publishing. It is especially useful when an agent has edited files you did not expect.
What safety controls does GitX provide?
GitX’s author describes the automation as intentionally conservative because Git operations can become dangerous quickly. The documented boundaries include:
- Normal commit workflows do not push automatically.
- The workflow avoids force-pushing.
- Existing branches and working-tree changes are protected rather than silently discarded.
- Files that may contain credentials, secrets, logs, or build artifacts trigger warnings before inclusion.
gitx planpreviews proposed changes before it creates commits.- Amending the latest commit uses
gitx amend, which asks before changing that commit.
These controls reduce accidental publication, but they do not make review optional. A warning can identify a risky file without knowing whether its contents are truly secret, and a logically plausible commit can still contain a code defect. Read the diff, check the test results, and confirm the remote destination yourself.

Can GitX manage branches, checks, pulls, pushes, and pull requests?
Yes. GitX includes separate commands for branch handling and for operations that move data to or from a remote. gitx branch can infer or work with a named branch, while gitx branch check performs a pre-commit branch check. Use gitx pull to bring remote changes into the local repository and gitx push to publish reviewed commits.
For GitHub collaboration, gitx pr handles pull-request work, and gitx ship combines the branch, check, commit, push, and pull-request stages into an end-to-end workflow. The combined command is convenient when the repository’s policy is known, but the individual commands are easier to audit when you are diagnosing a failure or working in a sensitive repository.
Remote operations still depend on your GitHub credentials, repository permissions, branch rules, and network access. GitX can orchestrate those steps; it cannot grant permission to a repository or bypass required reviews.
How do issues and conflict resolution fit into the workflow?
gitx issue supports two starting points: creating an issue or implementing an existing numbered issue. That lets a task begin from a tracked request rather than from an unlabelled working tree. Keep the issue number and acceptance criteria visible while reviewing the proposed commits so the history remains connected to the work it describes.
When a pull, merge, or rebase produces conflicts, gitx resolve is the documented entry point for conflict assistance. You should still inspect every conflict marker and the final diff. Conflict resolution can produce code that is syntactically valid but semantically wrong, particularly when both sides changed authentication, database, or configuration behavior.
How can I customize commit messages and project preferences?
GitX exposes focused customization commands instead of requiring you to rewrite every generated message. Use gitx type to influence the Conventional Commit type, gitx scope for the affected area, gitx body for additional explanation, and gitx files when file selection needs explicit control.

For repository-level preferences, gitx setup previews and saves optional settings in .gitx.json. Review that file as part of the repository’s normal configuration governance: decide whether the preferences belong in version control, whether they match team policy, and whether they could surprise another contributor or agent.
Is GitX portable across AI coding agents?
GitX is designed for clients that support the Agent Skills format. The documented compatible examples include Codex, Claude Code, and Cursor, along with other tools that can load a portable SKILL.md skill. Portability means the workflow instructions and commands can travel between supported agents; it does not mean every client exposes identical prompts, authentication behavior, or terminal integration.
If your agent does not support Agent Skills, the package cannot be assumed to install or run there. In that case, use ordinary Git commands or a supported client rather than copying the skill’s files into an unknown integration and treating it as equivalent.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are GitX’s limits and the situations that need extra caution?
GitX infers intent from diffs and repository context. It cannot recover intent that the diff does not express. If an AI session made two changes in the same files for unrelated reasons, grouping may be ambiguous; if generated files obscure the source change, the proposal may need manual correction. A clean Conventional Commit message also does not prove that the implementation is correct.
Recommended Free Tools
Use extra caution when:
- The working tree contains edits from multiple people or multiple AI sessions.
- Files include deployment credentials, local environment values, logs, generated bundles, or database dumps.
- You are on a protected, shared, or release branch.
- A pull or rebase has unresolved conflicts.
- Project checks are expensive, flaky, or not configured well enough to represent the real test suite.
- You need a history rewrite; GitX’s conservative behavior is intentionally not a force-push workflow.
In these cases, create a backup branch or stash according to your team’s normal policy, inspect the raw Git diff, and use the narrowest GitX command that solves the immediate problem.
What does a complete GitX session look like?
Suppose an agent added token refresh support, changed API behavior for expired sessions, and wrote tests. Begin by checking the repository and scanning the changes:

For a repository that has standardized the full sequence and whose permissions are already configured, gitx ship can coordinate the branch, checks, commit, push, and pull request. Keep the preview and scan steps in your routine even when using the combined path, because they expose grouping and sensitive-file problems before publication.
Who benefits most from GitX?
GitX is most useful when an AI agent produces valuable code quickly but leaves humans with the cleanup. Teams that care about readable Conventional Commit history, small review units, issue-linked work, and cautious remote operations get the clearest benefit. It is also a fit for developers who move between multiple Agent Skills-compatible clients and want the same Git workflow in each.
If your changes are always a single, manually staged edit and your repository has no branch, check, or pull-request conventions, GitX’s broader workflow may add little. The value appears when there are multiple logical changes to separate or several repository operations to coordinate safely.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does GitX replace the Git command-line client?
No. GitX is a workflow skill that analyzes changes and orchestrates Git operations; the repository still needs Git, normal remotes, and valid credentials. You can continue using ordinary Git commands whenever you want lower-level control.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will a normal GitX commit push my branch automatically?
No. The documented normal commit path does not push, which leaves a review point before anything reaches a remote. Publishing is handled separately through the push workflow or the coordinated shipping command.
Where are GitX project preferences saved?
The setup workflow can save optional repository preferences in a file named .gitx.json. Treat that file like other project configuration: review its contents and decide whether your team wants it committed and shared.
Can GitX help when a rebase has conflicts?
Yes. The documented gitx resolve command is intended for merge or rebase conflicts. You remain responsible for checking each resolved file and validating behavior after the conflict markers are gone.
