GIF Has No Sound? Add Music to the Samsung Video

You cannot store a soundtrack inside a standard GIF. On Samsung Galaxy devices, a GIF is treated as an animated image, while a music-bearing clip is a video file such as MP4. The reliable solution is to add music to the original clip in Gallery’s video editor and save that version as a video. If you also need a looping GIF, export a separate, silent GIF from the same material. This guide shows both workflows, explains the different Samsung menus, and helps you keep original audio, background music, and sharing compatibility under control.

Can you add music directly to a GIF on a Samsung phone?

No. A GIF created or saved through Samsung Gallery is an animated image and does not carry a playable soundtrack. Samsung’s format guidance places GIF in the image category and MP4 in the video category; Gallery’s documented music controls belong to the video editor, not the GIF creator.

That distinction determines the correct workflow:

Output Best for Sound Samsung editing path
Video, such as MP4 A clip that must retain music, spoken audio, or both Can include original audio and added music Gallery video editor, then Audio and Add background music or Add soundtrack
Animated GIF A silent, looping animation No soundtrack in the GIF workflow Gallery’s GIF creation tools, usually from selected images or a short video segment

If sound is the priority, keep the edited video. If a silent loop is also useful for a destination that expects GIFs, create and save a second file rather than converting the soundtrack-bearing video and expecting the audio to survive.

Which Samsung devices and menus support this workflow?

Samsung documents the Video editor on S20 models and newer in UK support guidance, but that is regional guidance rather than a promise that every current Galaxy exposes identical controls. Samsung’s US instructions warn that screen names and settings can differ by model, wireless provider, and software version.

Most supported phones place the controls in Gallery. Some recent Galaxy A-series guidance instead presents a Studio project workflow in which you start a project, choose video, and add audio or a license-free soundtrack. The exact soundtrack library and menu names are not established as universal, so use the path that actually appears on your phone.

Check these prerequisites before editing

  • Open the current Gallery app and confirm that your clip is visible.
  • Install the latest software update offered for your model if Gallery menus look substantially different from the instructions below.
  • Make sure the clip is a video, not an already-exported GIF. A GIF will not expose the same Audio controls.
  • Have enough free storage for a second video export. Samsung notes that large or high-resolution videos can take several minutes to save.

How do I add music to a video in Samsung Gallery?

Use Gallery’s video editor when you want the final file to retain sound. The labels can vary slightly, but the sequence is the same: select the clip, open Edit, enter Audio, choose a music source, balance the levels, preview, and save as a video.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Gallery. Browse to the video clip that will become the base for your edit.
  2. Tap Edit. The control is usually the pencil icon.
  3. Open Audio. Look for the speaker icon in the editor toolbar.
  4. Choose the music command. Samsung documentation uses Add background music and, in some versions, Add soundtrack. Select whichever label your phone provides.
  5. Select a track. Pick the audio source offered by the editor. The available library and import behavior depend on the device and software version.
  6. Set the two volume levels. Adjust the original video audio and the added music independently. Lower the source track if it competes with the music, or reduce the music if speech or natural sound should remain clear.
  7. Preview the complete clip. Check the beginning and end, not only the point where you made the edit. Listen for abrupt starts, an unexpectedly loud source track, or music that ends before the picture.
  8. Save the edited result as a video. Do not choose a GIF conversion if you need the soundtrack. Samsung warns that large or high-resolution projects may take a few minutes to finish saving.

After saving, return to Gallery and play the newly created video. Confirm that the speaker control is available during playback and that both the picture and sound run for the intended duration before deleting the original.

How should I mix the original audio and the added song?

Gallery’s ordinary editor exposes separate controls for video audio and music. That lets you create a simple mix instead of replacing every sound in the clip.

Keep speech or important natural sound

Leave the video level high enough for voices, instructions, or distinctive environmental sound, then lower the music until it supports rather than masks those elements. Preview with the same headphones or speaker you expect the audience to use; a level that sounds quiet on a phone speaker may be prominent on headphones.

Make music the main element

Lower the original video track and raise the added music only as far as the editor allows without audible clipping or distortion. If the source clip contains occasional loud noises, inspect those moments individually instead of judging only the opening seconds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove the original track entirely

If your version of Gallery provides a zero setting for the video volume, set it there and leave the music level at the amount you want. If the slider does not reach silence, use the lowest available level and listen through the saved file; Samsung’s menu options vary by model and software.

What is Audio eraser, and should I use it?

Audio eraser is an optional Gallery video tool, separate from the basic music-adding step. Samsung describes it as a way to filter categories such as voices, music, noise, crowd sound, or nature sounds when the feature is available on the device.

Use it only when the original recording needs cleanup. It is not required to add a soundtrack, and Samsung cautions that very short sounds may not be detected and ambiguous sounds can be classified incorrectly.

  1. Open the video in Gallery and enter the video-editing tools.
  2. Choose Audio eraser if your model displays it.
  3. Select the type of sound you want to reduce or filter.
  4. Preview the result, because the tool may affect sounds you intended to keep.
  5. Save a cleaned copy, then add background music in the normal Audio controls if you still want a soundtrack.

Keep the unedited original until you have checked the cleaned export. Automated filtering can change the character of a recording, especially when several sounds overlap.

How do I create a GIF when I specifically need a silent loop?

Create the GIF as a separate output after, or instead of, the music-bearing video. Samsung Gallery’s GIF tools work from selected images in a story or from a short portion of video, then let you adjust properties such as ratio, speed, direction, and decorations before saving.

Create a GIF from selected images

  1. Open Gallery and select the images you want in the animation.
  2. Use the story or creation controls and choose the GIF option.
  3. Adjust the aspect ratio, playback speed, direction, or available decorations.
  4. Preview the loop and save it as a GIF.

Create a GIF from a short video portion

  1. Open the source video in Gallery.
  2. Use the available creation or GIF command to select the portion that should loop.
  3. Set the speed, direction, ratio, or decorations offered by your software version.
  4. Save the result as a GIF and keep the edited video separately if its audio matters.

Samsung Japan’s support guidance likewise describes GIFs as compressed image-format animations and documents separate creation paths from photos or short video sections. Those controls produce a silent animation by design; they do not transfer the soundtrack from the video editor.

What is the best way to keep both a music video and a GIF?

Use one source clip and make two deliberate exports, each for a different job. This avoids trying to make one file satisfy incompatible format requirements.

  1. Preserve the original. Do not overwrite the camera recording before you have checked the edited versions.
  2. Make the soundtrack version first. Add music in Gallery’s video editor, set the two volume levels, preview it, and save the result as a video.
  3. Make the loop version second. Use Gallery’s GIF creation controls on the original or a suitable short segment, then save the silent animation.
  4. Name the files clearly. A name indicating “video” and another indicating “GIF” prevents you from sending the silent loop when someone expects sound.
  5. Test each file in Gallery. Play the video with sound enabled and open the GIF to confirm that its loop, crop, and speed look right.

This two-file approach also lets you choose the appropriate output for each destination without repeatedly converting and potentially degrading the material.

Why can’t I find Add background music or Add soundtrack?

The missing command usually reflects a different editor layout, a model or software limitation, or a regional variation—not a problem with the clip itself. Samsung explicitly says that Gallery screens and settings can vary by wireless provider, software version, and model.

Try the standard checks

  • Open the clip from Gallery rather than from a third-party file browser, then tap the pencil icon and look for the speaker icon.
  • Check whether your phone places editing under Studio. On some newer Galaxy A-series devices, start a Studio project, choose a video, and look for audio or a license-free soundtrack option.
  • Install any available system or Gallery update, then reopen the app.
  • Confirm that you selected a video. GIFs and still images use different creation tools and will not show the video editor’s soundtrack controls.
  • If the editor is still different, consult the support instructions for your exact model and region instead of assuming that another Galaxy’s menu must appear on yours.

Samsung UK’s S20-and-above availability statement should be treated as a support reference, not a universal compatibility guarantee for every current Galaxy edition.

What should I do if the track will not import or the file will not play?

Samsung’s supported-media page lists broad image, video, and music format categories, but that list is device guidance rather than a guarantee that every editor accepts every audio file as a background-music source.

When a music file is rejected

  • Try another audio file that the phone recognizes in its music library.
  • Make sure the file is stored locally and can play in Samsung’s own media apps before selecting it in the editor.
  • Reopen Gallery after moving or downloading the file so the media index can refresh.
  • If one track fails while another works, treat it as a file-format or encoding compatibility issue rather than evidence that the entire editor is unavailable.

Do not assume that an extension shown on Samsung’s general format list will work in every model’s soundtrack picker. The editor’s own import behavior is the practical test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the saved video has no sound

  • Reopen the saved video in Gallery and verify that the player is not muted.
  • Return to the project and confirm that both the video and music volume sliders were above zero.
  • Save again as a video, not as a GIF or another image-based export.
  • Play the new file from Gallery before sending it to another app.

When saving appears to stall

Samsung notes that large or high-resolution videos may take a few minutes to save. Leave the editor open while processing completes, then check Gallery for the new file. Avoid deleting the original until the export appears and plays correctly.

How do Samsung Gallery and Studio differ for adding music?

They represent different interface presentations for a similar goal, not two guaranteed features on every phone.

Interface Typical entry point What the documented workflow shows Important qualification
Gallery video editor Gallery → video → Edit (pencil) → Audio (speaker) Add background music or Add soundtrack, then adjust original and added audio levels Labels and availability vary by model, software version, and provider
Studio project Gallery → Studio → new project → select video Add audio or a license-free soundtrack within the project Documented for some recent Galaxy A-series camera guidance; not established as universal

If both paths appear, choose the one that gives you the volume controls and export options you need. If only one appears, follow that interface rather than trying to force instructions from another model onto your phone.

What should I know before sharing the finished file?

Choose the file according to what the recipient or service must receive. Send the edited video when the soundtrack, narration, or original audio is part of the message. Send the GIF when a silent loop is sufficient and the destination is designed to display animated images.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Playback and sharing behavior can depend on the destination app. Samsung has warned in a legacy manual for a particular super-slow-motion workflow that some social networks and messenger apps may not support GIF sharing features; that warning should not be generalized to every current app or every GIF. Test the actual destination when the result is important, and keep the video as the dependable audio-bearing copy.

Which output should I choose for common projects?

Your goal Recommended file Reason
Music must be heard with the animation Edited video Video formats can carry the soundtrack; GIF output cannot.
A short loop for a GIF-compatible destination Animated GIF Gallery can create a silent loop with speed and direction controls.
Speech plus background music Edited video with separate volume adjustments The editor lets you balance original and added audio independently.
Both a loop and a soundtrack version Save two exports Each file preserves the behavior expected by its format.
Removing distracting background sound Video processed with optional Audio eraser Audio eraser can filter selected sound categories when available, but requires previewing for mistakes.

What are the most common mistakes?

  • Calling the final file a GIF when it must have sound. Use a video export for any soundtrack requirement.
  • Overwriting the original too soon. Keep the camera file until both the audio mix and the picture have been checked.
  • Ignoring the two volume controls. A technically successful export can still be unusable if music masks speech or the source audio overwhelms it.
  • Assuming every Galaxy has the same labels. Look for equivalent Gallery, Audio, or Studio controls and account for model and software differences.
  • Treating Audio eraser as mandatory. It is a separate cleanup option and can misidentify short or ambiguous sounds.
  • Judging only the editor preview. Play the saved file in Gallery; export processing can reveal timing, volume, or format problems that are easy to miss before saving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a GIF with music play correctly in a messaging app?

A GIF file created through Samsung Gallery is still an image animation, so an app cannot rely on it to carry a soundtrack. Send the edited video when recipients must hear the music; use the GIF only for the silent visual loop. Destination apps can also differ in how they preview or share GIFs.

Why do two Samsung phones show different music-editing buttons?

Samsung varies Gallery screens and settings by model, wireless provider, software version, and region. One phone may show Add background music in the pencil editor while another exposes audio inside Studio, so compare the current menus on the exact device rather than following a button name literally.

Does Samsung’s supported-format list guarantee that my song file will import?

No. The format page is broad device guidance, while the soundtrack picker may accept a narrower set of files on a particular model. If one track is rejected, test another locally playable file and verify the saved video before sharing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long should I wait for a music edit to save?

Samsung says large or high-resolution videos may take a few minutes to finish processing. Wait for the new file to appear in Gallery and play it before closing the editor or deleting the source.

Is Audio eraser needed before adding a soundtrack?

No. It is an optional cleanup tool for filtering categories such as voices, music, noise, crowd, or nature sounds when your device includes it. Because short or ambiguous sounds can be missed or misidentified, preview a cleaned copy before adding music or discarding the original.
