Which version is better for mods and multiplayer?
For one purchase that offers the strongest documented mod route and a realistic chance of playing locally with another person, the Steam remaster is the best-supported choice. Install the Windows x64 framework gbhook, use the GBTVGR Mod Manager, and then install RetroPulse03’s 2-Player and Female Rookie project. That project is local split-screen, not official online multiplayer, and its author warns that problems are likely.
The original Xbox 360 game is the more authentic answer if “multiplayer” means the modes shipped with the original realistic game. A Prima guide’s indexed contents include Multiplayer Jobs and Xbox 360 references, but that historical documentation does not prove that Xbox Live sessions still operate on October 30, 2026. Best all-around mod target: Steam Remastered
Steam is the clearest target because the named split-screen project explicitly requires it. The manager recognizes both Steam and Epic installations, and gbhook documents support for Remastered on Windows x64 through either storefront. That broader framework support does not make every individual mod cross-store compatible: each mod’s requirements still control.
Best historical multiplayer target: original Xbox 360
The original realistic edition is the one associated with the era’s multiplayer jobs. Intel’s case study of Saber Interactive’s remaster explains that six recovered source-code versions existed and that the correct multiplayer version could not be identified. That explains why the remaster shipped without the original official multiplayer, but it does not establish whether today’s Xbox 360 service is reachable.

The Wii game is not simply the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 game with lower graphics. It is a distinct, stylized version with its own two-player campaign. RetroPulse03 identifies that Wii experience as inspiration for the new split-screen mod, so it should be treated as a separate co-op game rather than evidence that the realistic editions always had the same local mode.
What the console remaster does not add
The remaster’s Steam listing describes a single-player campaign, and the unmodified console editions are likewise sold as single-player experiences. Buying a physical or digital console copy therefore does not provide the fan-made PC split-screen features or restore the original online mode.

Why the original multiplayer disappeared
Intel’s case study says Saber Interactive recovered six versions of the multiplayer source code while preparing the remaster. The team could not determine which version was the correct one, so the remaster retained the campaign without the original multiplayer system. The six-version figure describes the development problem; it is not evidence that a hidden official co-op toggle can be enabled today.
What has changed in 2026
RetroPulse03 uploaded the 2-Player and Female Rookie mod on October 23, 2026. It adds local two-player split-screen, supports drop-in/drop-out play, and offers a female Rookie option, but it remains an unofficial modification with known issue risk. It does not add matchmaking, dedicated servers or a restored official network mode.
What multiplayer did the original game have?
The original realistic console release had multiplayer jobs documented in the period’s guide, but present-day service status is a separate question. The Wii edition also offered two-player campaign play, yet it was a different stylized production rather than the same code used by the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or PC versions.
Original realistic edition

How does the Steam split-screen mod work?

How do I install mods on Steam Remastered?
You need the Steam Windows build, enough disk space for the downloads, administrator access to the game folder if Windows requests it, and a way to revert files. Keep the mod pages open while installing because code mods and content mods can load differently.
- Install the correct game build. Use the Steam edition of Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered on a Windows x64 system. Do not begin with a console copy or the original 2009 Windows release; the tools described here target the remaster.

- Recover from a failed launch. Remove the newly added mod files first. If the game still fails, temporarily remove gbhook using its documented rollback procedure, verify the game files through Steam, and reinstall one component at a time.
gbhook disables achievements while it is installed. Treat the installation as a user-managed modification rather than an officially supported mode, and expect updates to change compatibility.
Does the split-screen mod work on Epic?
Not according to this mod’s author. The 2-Player and Female Rookie page specifies the Steam version, so an Epic owner should not assume the same files will load.
The underlying framework is broader: gbhook documents Steam and Epic support on Windows x64, and the GBTVGR Mod Manager recognizes both storefront installations.
