Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone follow-up in the Ghost series, not a direct story sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. It introduces Atsu, a new protagonist, in Ezo (present-day Hokkaido) roughly 300 years after Jin Sakai’s adventure. Sony describes it as a standalone experience, while Sucker Punch calls it a worthy follow-up whose story is unrelated to Tsushima’s plot. You can therefore start with Yōtei without finishing Tsushima. The games still share a creative lineage: the design evolves the earlier game’s open-world approach and mythos, and Jin’s legend remains part of the wider world. Yōtei launched separately for PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025.

Is Ghost of Yōtei a direct sequel to Ghost of Tsushima?
No. It is a sequel in the broad franchise sense—a new game that follows Tsushima in the Ghost series—but it is not a direct continuation of Jin Sakai’s story. Sony’s description calls Yōtei a “standalone experience,” and its official FAQ says the two stories are not directly connected. Sucker Punch’s announcement makes the same distinction: Yōtei’s story is unrelated to Tsushima’s while still being intended as a worthy follow-up to Jin’s journey.

That wording resolves the apparent contradiction. “Standalone” describes how the narrative works for players; “follow-up” describes its place in the series and its creative relationship to the earlier game. Yōtei is not Ghost of Tsushima 2 with Jin’s next chapter, but it is designed as the next major Ghost experience.
What does “standalone” mean for the story?
A standalone game has its own lead character, setting, conflict and narrative arc. Yōtei does not require you to know Tsushima’s plot to understand why Atsu travels through Ezo or what she is trying to achieve. The game can introduce its own history and stakes without asking you to import Jin’s personal relationships or unresolved missions.

This does not mean the games are unrelated in every sense. They belong to the same series, use an evolving version of the same design philosophy and draw on a shared “Ghost” identity. The connection is thematic and creative rather than a chapter-by-chapter continuation.
Who is the protagonist in Ghost of Yōtei?
Atsu is Yōtei’s protagonist. Sucker Punch’s announcement says her family was killed by the Yōtei Six, and that she returns to Ezo sixteen years later to seek them out. The revenge premise is the starting point of her journey, not a continuation of Jin Sakai’s personal quest. The developer also says the story develops beyond revenge, so the premise should not be treated as a complete synopsis of the campaign.

Sony places the game in the 1600s, approximately 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima. Sucker Punch uses the historical name Ezo for the region that corresponds to present-day Hokkaido, giving Yōtei a northern-Japan setting distinct from Tsushima Island.
Is Jin Sakai in Ghost of Yōtei?
No. The official PlayStation FAQ states: “As such, Ghost of Tsushima’s main protagonist Jin Sakai does not feature within the game.” Jin is not the playable hero and Yōtei does not present Atsu as the continuation of his personal storyline.
His absence does not erase his importance to the series. PlayStation says Jin’s legend endures, which is a safer description of the connection than implying that he appears, guides Atsu or drives the main plot. Treat Jin as part of the franchise’s established mythology, not as a character whose next mission you must follow.

How are the two games connected?
The connection has three practical layers:
- Franchise continuity: Yōtei is the next Ghost game, with an approach to stealth, combat, exploration and Japanese historical drama that evolves from Tsushima.
- Mythos continuity: Sony describes an evolution of the series’ design and mythos, and Jin’s legend remains known even though he is absent.
- Activity continuity: Sucker Punch has described expanded freedom in open-world exploration and some returning types of activity. Familiar categories do not make the story a direct sequel.
Later Yōtei content follows the same rule. The current game listing identifies Legends co-op and the Echoes of Sekigahara expansion as additions to Yōtei. They expand Atsu’s game; they are not evidence that the main campaign secretly continues Jin’s plot.

Do you need to play Ghost of Tsushima first?
No. Newcomers can begin with Yōtei because the stories are unrelated and the game is presented as standalone. Playing Tsushima first is optional background for readers who want to see how the series’ design and themes developed, not a prerequisite for understanding Atsu’s conflict.
Choose based on what you want from the experience:
- Start with Yōtei if you want the newest setting, a new protagonist and an independent story.
- Play Tsushima first if you specifically want Jin Sakai’s original arc or want to recognize the series’ earlier design choices before seeing how Yōtei changes them.
- Play both in release order if you value the evolution of the Ghost formula more than a continuous plot. Release order gives context without being required for comprehension.
There is no evidence here of a required save-file transfer, imported decisions or other technical prerequisite. The recommendation to start with either game is about narrative access, not a claim about a particular account or console feature.
When and where can you play Ghost of Yōtei?
Yōtei released worldwide on October 2, 2025 as a separate PlayStation 5 game. The official game page lists PS5 and PS5 Pro enhancements and does not list a PS4 version. The verified availability is therefore PS5; no current PC release or later-platform roadmap is established by the cited official pages, so do not assume one from the game’s standalone status.
The launch announcement and current product pages are different snapshots. The October 2025 announcement is authoritative for the release date and launch editions, while the current listing also describes later additions such as Legends and the Complete Edition. Treat the Complete Edition as a current catalog entry, not as proof that every edition was available on launch day.

Which Ghost of Yōtei edition should you buy?
Edition choice affects both price and whether the game entitlement is physical or digital. Sony’s US launch MSRPs were publisher figures checked for the October 2025 launch, not guarantees of what a retailer charges in November 2026.

If you specifically want a physical game, the PlayStation Direct listing titled Ghost of Yōtei PS5 identifies the Standard Edition as a disc. Search wording such as “Ghost of Yotei PS5 Standard Edition disc” can help locate listings, but a search phrase is not proof that a particular seller has stock. Check the listing’s platform, disc or voucher format, seller, region and current price before buying.
The Collector’s Edition is different: it supplies physical display items but lists the game among digital items. A Gold limited-edition DualSense controller, themed PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro covers, and a Gold limited-edition console bundle are separate accessories or bundles. Sony says the Gold console bundle contains a game voucher. Confirm that a cover matches your exact PS5 model, and note that some black-themed console accessories are PlayStation Direct exclusives rather than ordinary marketplace stock.
What is the best way to understand the timeline?
Think of the chronology as a large time jump, not a handoff between heroes. Tsushima tells Jin Sakai’s story in its earlier historical period. Yōtei moves to Ezo in the 1600s, roughly three centuries later, and follows Atsu sixteen years after the killing of her family. The interval is long enough for Yōtei to establish its own social and political context while retaining the Ghost series’ identity.

The timeline explains why Jin can be absent without the series being rebooted. Yōtei can acknowledge the legend created by the earlier game while focusing on a later generation and a different region. Nothing in the official descriptions establishes Jin as a secret playable character, a mission giver or a direct ancestor whose biography the campaign requires.

What should returning players expect from the design?
Sucker Punch presents Yōtei as an expansion of the freedom associated with Tsushima’s open-world exploration. Some activity types return, but the developer frames them as part of an evolving design rather than a promise that every system is identical. Expect continuity of approach—exploration, combat, stealth and a strong sense of place—without treating familiar mechanics as proof of story continuity.
The game’s optional Legends co-op update and the Echoes of Sekigahara expansion belong to Yōtei’s own content line. They may appeal to players who want multiplayer or additional post-launch material, but neither changes the answer to the central question: Yōtei’s main narrative is Atsu’s standalone story.

Is there a PS4 version of Ghost of Yōtei?
