When the screen becomes crowded, focus on the next safe movement rather than trying to track every crystal and enemy simultaneously. A predictable path with room to change direction is more useful than crossing the screen for a pickup and becoming trapped. This also gives you time to distinguish airborne threats from ground targets.
Use the right attack for the target
Shooting is your main response to approaching threats. Bombs serve a different purpose: they can hit enemies on the ground that your normal shots may pass over. If a ground target remains while your shots continue past it, remember to use the bomb action rather than assuming the shot missed.
