An HF upconverter lets a conventional RTL-SDR receive shortwave by shifting the signal into the tuner’s range. Connect an HF antenna to the converter’s RF input, connect its IF output to the RTL-SDR, power it as specified, select upconversion, and tune using the converter’s offset: 125 MHz for a Ham It Up or 120 MHz for a SpyVerter R2. If you have an RTL-SDR Blog V4, it already has an internal HF upconverter, so try direct HF tuning with compatible drivers before buying an external converter.

Why can’t I hear shortwave on a conventional RTL-SDR?

Many conventional RTL-SDR tuners are designed to receive frequencies starting in the VHF region, while shortwave signals are in the HF band. An external upconverter bridges that gap: it mixes the incoming HF signal with a local oscillator and sends a higher-frequency version to the dongle. The receiver then tunes that translated frequency, while your software can display the original HF frequency if its converter offset is configured correctly. The RTL-SDR Blog describes external converters and enhanced V3/V4 hardware as routes to HF listening (RTL-SDR Blog: About RTL-SDR).

Conversion solves a frequency-range problem, not an antenna problem. A short VHF whip or discone is generally a poor default for shortwave; an HF-suitable antenna and placement still matter. Nor does a converter guarantee reception of a particular station at a particular place or time. The practical chain is antenna, converter, receiver, correct frequency translation, and appropriate demodulation.

Do I need an external converter for my RTL-SDR?

It depends on the specific receiver. A V3 can use direct sampling for HF, while an RTL-SDR Blog V4 has an internal 28.8 MHz-LO HF upconverter and should normally be tuned directly to the desired HF frequency with compatible drivers.

RTL-SDR Blog V3: direct sampling is a separate route

The V3’s Q-branch direct-sampling mode is one way to receive HF without an external converter. It is not the setting to enable when operating an external upconverter: the converter already moves HF into the tuner’s range. Direct sampling also has limitations, including mirrored signals and overload from strong signals, documented in the V3 user guide.

RTL-SDR Blog V4: try its built-in HF path first

The V4 incorporates an internal HF upconverter, so an external converter is not required merely to unlock HF reception. Tune to the HF frequency normally and do not enable direct sampling; the V4 user guide warns that activating direct sampling on a V4 yields no results. Driver compatibility matters: incompatible drivers can cause missing, corrupted, or misplaced signals. The V4 datasheet describes its internal upconverter’s 28.8 MHz oscillator (RTL-SDR Blog V4 datasheet).

When an external converter makes sense

For a receiver without built-in HF coverage, an external converter is a straightforward way to use its normal tuner on translated HF signals. It may also be selected for other setup reasons, but it is an add-on, not an antenna replacement. Before choosing one, confirm that your receiver can tune the converter’s output and that you can supply the converter’s required power.

Which HF upconverter fits the setup?

The converter model determines the frequency shift, input range, power arrangement, and any passthrough behavior. Do not assume all products called an HF upconverter share the same offset or accessories.

Nooelec Ham It Up Plus v2 125 MHz; 300 Hz–65 MHz upconvert range USB power; passthrough and switchable LNA; product page lists a male-SMA barrel adapter and a male-SMA-to-female-BNC adapter. Nooelec product page and Plus v2 datasheet.
Nooelec Ham It Up Nano 125 MHz; 100 kHz–65 MHz Manufacturer documents bias-tee, micro-USB, and DC power options. Some externally USB-powered combinations may need a DC block; this is not a blanket requirement for every RTL-SDR. Nooelec support FAQ.
Airspy SpyVerter R2 120 MHz positive-image IF; 1 kHz–60 MHz RF input Airspy specifies 4.2–5.5 V bias-tee supply and current below 100 mA; RTL-SDR compatibility is listed. Airspy product page.

These are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative reception results. The Plus v2 details above are specific to that revision; they should not be generalized to every earlier Ham It Up version. The manufacturer’s general FAQ and its Plus v2 documentation differ on current and amplification descriptions, so use the documentation for the exact unit rather than inferring bias-tee compatibility or current draw from a generic product-family statement.

What do I need before connecting the converter?

Gather the exact receiver and converter model, an HF-appropriate antenna, and any adapters or short coaxial jumper needed to match connector types. Check that the RTL-SDR and its software work before adding the converter; Nooelec suggests receiving an ordinary local FM station as an initial receiver check (Nooelec support FAQ). This separates a receiver or driver problem from a conversion or antenna problem.

  • Identify whether the receiver is a V3, V4, or another model; their HF operating paths differ.
  • Check the converter’s RF input and IF output labels, connector genders, power method, and frequency offset.
  • Use a suitable HF antenna. A longer wire, optionally with a 9:1 unun, or an active loop such as the MLA30+ are examples discussed by RTL-SDR Blog; neither is established as a universal best antenna (RTL-SDR Blog V3 user guide).
  • Do not enable a bias tee casually. Check the receiver and converter documentation and the power needs of anything connected to the coax.

How do I connect an HF upconverter to an RTL-SDR?

Use this sequence for an external converter. Exact menu labels vary by receiver application, so use the converter-frequency setting or preset in your software rather than assuming that every program labels its controls identically.

  1. Confirm the receiver works. Connect the RTL-SDR as usual and verify reception of a known local signal, such as FM broadcast, before introducing the converter.
  2. Connect the antenna to RF input. Attach the HF antenna’s coax to the converter port labeled RF input. Do not connect the antenna to the IF output.
  3. Connect IF output to the dongle. Run coax from the converter’s IF output to the RTL-SDR antenna input. Match SMA/BNC genders with the correct adapter; do not assume accessories are included with every converter variant.
  4. Select upconvert and power the unit. If the converter has a passthrough switch, select upconvert. Power the particular model according to its manufacturer’s instructions. The Plus v2 instructions specify USB power; Nano and SpyVerter R2 document different arrangements. A USB-powered converter is not a second USB receiver and does not need a separate computer driver. Nooelec’s bundle support document explains that the converter is not detected by the computer and requires no drivers (Nooelec NESDR SMArt HF Bundle FAQ).
  5. Set the converter offset in the SDR software. Select a matching converter preset if available, or enter the model’s frequency shift. Check both the hardware tuning frequency and the displayed RF frequency after applying the setting.
  6. Choose a demodulation mode. Use AM for many broadcast signals and SSB where appropriate for amateur voice signals; select the mode suited to the signal rather than expecting one setting to decode everything. RTL-SDR Blog identifies international shortwave broadcasting and amateur SSB among HF uses (About RTL-SDR).

What offset should I enter for a Ham It Up or SpyVerter?

For a Ham It Up, the translated hardware frequency is the desired HF frequency plus 125 MHz. For a SpyVerter R2, add 120 MHz. The software offset feature corrects the displayed frequency; interfaces can describe the sign and direction differently, so verify the resulting display rather than copying a sign into a differently named field.

Converter Wanted HF frequency Hardware tuning frequency before display correction
Ham It Up (125 MHz conversion) 7 MHz 132 MHz
SpyVerter R2 (120 MHz conversion) 7 MHz 127 MHz

Nooelec describes a −125,000,000 Hz displayed-frequency correction for Ham It Up, while SDR++ documents a Ham It Up preset and a custom 125,000,000 Hz converter value (SDR++ manual). The differing sign conventions reflect how software presents its converter setting; the goal is for a signal translated from 7 MHz to display at 7 MHz, not 132 MHz. Use the offset for the exact converter, not a generic RTL-SDR setting. A 120 MHz SpyVerter offset cannot be replaced with the Ham It Up’s 125 MHz value.

How should I handle antenna, gain, and bias-tee power?

Start with the antenna and power path before adding amplification. On HF, antenna length and placement affect what reaches the converter, while local interference can dominate reception. A short VHF whip or discone is a poor default; RTL-SDR Blog suggests a longer wire, optionally using a 9:1 unun, or an active loop for suitable situations. The sources do not establish one antenna that wins in every location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bias-tee voltage and current are device-specific. RTL-SDR Blog specifies 4.5 V and up to 180 mA for its V3/V4 bias tee, and warns against leaving it connected to a directly connected DC-shorted antenna (V4 user guide). Airspy specifies 4.2–5.5 V and under 100 mA for the SpyVerter R2. The Nano supports bias-tee power, but its manufacturer cautions that some externally USB-powered configurations require a DC block. The Plus v2 setup calls for USB power; do not assume it should be powered from an RTL-SDR bias tee. Follow the exact unit’s documentation.

More gain is not automatically better. If strong broadcasters cause misplaced signals or degraded sensitivity, investigate overload, gain, and whether an appropriate rejection filter or attenuation is warranted before adding an LNA. RTL-SDR Blog notes that very strong reception conditions can require attenuation or filtering for V4, while V3 direct sampling can be overloaded by medium-wave signals. These are distinct paths and interference conditions; no single filter is established as a fix for every source.

Why is the waterfall blank, or why are signals in the wrong places?

Work through the signal path in order. A blank display may be caused by a disconnected antenna, reversed RF/IF connections, the wrong switch position, missing power, an incorrect converter preset, or a receiver-driver issue. Wrongly placed peaks often point to an offset mismatch or interference rather than a failure of the shortwave band itself.

If there is no signal at all

  • Check antenna → converter RF input → converter IF output → RTL-SDR input.
  • Confirm the converter is powered and set to upconvert rather than passthrough.
  • Verify ordinary receiver operation and driver compatibility; on V4, incompatible drivers can produce absent or corrupted HF signals.
  • Check the hardware frequency and software display correction for the converter’s actual offset.
  • If local FM works on the receiver without the converter but converted HF does not, investigate converter configuration and antenna suitability separately.

If signals appear at unexpected frequencies

  • Remove or correct an offset that does not match the converter: 125 MHz for Ham It Up, 120 MHz for SpyVerter R2.
  • For ordinary higher-frequency reception through a passthrough-capable Ham It Up, set the physical switch to passthrough and remove the conversion offset; leaving the offset active can make the displayed frequency appear wrong.
  • On a V3 using direct sampling, consider mirrored signals and strong-signal overload as documented limitations; do not enable direct sampling to operate an external converter.
  • If strong broadcasters coincide with a loss of sensitivity or many apparent signals, reduce gain or consider suitable attenuation/rejection filtering rather than immediately adding amplification.

If the power control seems confusing

Do not confuse the V4 driver’s control named “Offset Tuning,” which can act as its bias-tee switch, with SDR++’s converter frequency-offset setting. They serve different functions. Identify which screen and hardware function you are changing before toggling a control called “offset.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I return to normal VHF or FM reception?

If the external converter has passthrough, switch it to passthrough for ordinary higher-frequency reception and remove the converter frequency offset in the SDR software. Otherwise, the software may continue subtracting the HF conversion shift and display the wrong frequency. For a V4 receiving HF directly, no external converter offset should be configured for its internal HF path.

What should I remember when choosing the setup?

Choose the simplest HF path supported by the receiver you already own: direct HF tuning on a properly configured V4, V3 direct sampling if its limitations are acceptable, or an external converter for a conventional tuner. With an external converter, the key setup decisions are the correct RF/IF connections, the model-specific power method, a suitable HF antenna, and the converter’s exact offset. Successful shortwave reception depends on the whole RF chain, not a converter alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an HF upconverter receive shortwave without an internet connection?

The converter is an RF frequency-shifting device, not an online service. Reception comes from the antenna and radio signal; internet access is not needed for the conversion itself.

Will the upconverter show up as another device in Windows or Linux?

Nooelec says its HF converter is not detected by the computer and does not require a separate driver. The RTL-SDR remains the device the SDR software uses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my V4’s “Offset Tuning” control affect power instead of frequency?

On the V4 with its own driver, that named control can function as the bias-tee switch. It is separate from the converter-frequency correction setting in SDR software.

Can I listen to amateur radio voice with an upconverter?

Yes, HF amateur SSB is one of the uses identified by RTL-SDR Blog. The signal still needs an appropriate antenna, tuning, and SSB demodulation; the converter only translates frequency.
