If Shadowheart’s parents quest appears stuck, first identify where progress stopped: the Mapping Room passage, Viconia’s post-fight scene, the Threshold of Loss, or the parents’ encounter itself. Bring Shadowheart to the House of Grief, let her use the Mapping Room bench, then follow the revealed passage to Viconia and onward through the Threshold to the Chamber of Loss. These are separate milestones: defeating Viconia does not, by itself, finish the parents portion of Daughter of Darkness.
The right fix depends on what the game is actually waiting for. A hidden passage, a locked threshold, a skipped conversation, and a cutscene that will not begin are not the same problem. Work through the stages below in order, and keep a recovery save before trying a different route or changing game files.

Match what you see in-game to the stage below before changing saves, mods, or game files. An unopened passage or locked door has a documented progression route; a missing scripted scene is a different problem and has no established universal fix.
- No passage from the Mapping Room: Shadowheart may not have used the stone bench, or the entrance may still be concealed.
- Viconia is defeated, but no follow-up conversation occurred: the post-fight sequence may have been bypassed or ended differently.
- The journal still directs you to the parents: proceed to the Threshold of Loss at the rear of the cloister rather than treating Viconia’s defeat as the end of the quest.
- You are in the Chamber of Loss, but nothing starts: confirm Shadowheart is present and that the party has reached her chained parents, Arnell and Emmeline. If the encounter still does not begin, treat it as a possible scripted or technical fault—not as a door puzzle.
The House of Grief investigation and Shadowheart’s Daughter of Darkness quest have distinct completion points. A journal entry that sounds unfinished does not establish, on its own, that the game has broken. In particular, resolving Investigate the House of Grief by defeating Viconia is not the same as reaching the parents’ final encounter in Daughter of Darkness.

Use the location of the failure as your first comparison:
- Before the Cloister: focus on Shadowheart’s party presence and the Mapping Room sequence.
- After entering the Cloister but before the Chamber: check whether Viconia’s post-fight beat was missed, then inspect the Threshold of Loss.
- After passing the Threshold: verify Shadowheart is with the party and approach the chained parents. If nothing triggers, the issue is no longer the lock.
- Only the outcome is unexpected: distinguish a story choice from a progression failure. Shadowheart’s decision about her parents has separate conditions.
How do I reveal the passage from the Mapping Room?
Have Shadowheart in the active party and let her sit on the stone bench in the Mapping Room. Her mapping reveals Viconia’s location and opens the concealed passage.
Recommended Free Tools
- Return to the House of Grief in the northwestern Lower City, in Act Three.
- Make sure Shadowheart is in the active party before using the Mapping Room.
- Let Shadowheart use the stone bench and allow the mapping sequence to finish.
- Look for the newly revealed passage and follow it toward the Cloister of Sombre Embrace.
If the mapping was done without Shadowheart, the entrance can instead require an Investigation check. Returning with her and having her use the bench is the more direct route. Her presence also waives the otherwise applicable Mapping fee.
This is worth checking even if you have already visited the room: the important distinction is whether Shadowheart herself was present for the mapping. If she was not, do not assume that the missing passage means the entire quest has failed. Bring her back and let her take the bench. That sequence can reveal the entrance without relying on the alternate Investigation check. It also avoids paying the fee that otherwise applies to the mapping.
Once the passage is visible, follow it into the Cloister of Sombre Embrace. The Mapping Room is an access step, not the parents’ encounter itself, so reaching the cloister does not mean the later objectives have completed.
What if Viconia’s fight ends but her scene does not trigger?
The post-fight conversation with Viconia is a separate beat from reaching her and defeating her. A maintained community quest reference says she ordinarily survives combat in a knocked-out state so the conversation can occur; it also notes that defeating her outside combat can kill her and prevent that scene.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That is a possible explanation, not a diagnosis for every missing conversation. If the scene was skipped or the encounter ended unusually, loading a save from before the confrontation and using ordinary combat is a diagnostic attempt. It is not a guaranteed repair, and a missing scene alone does not establish that this was the cause.
If you try that route, keep the current save and use a separate earlier save rather than overwriting your only recovery point. If the ordinary combat route still does not produce the conversation, continue checking the actual quest objective: the Threshold of Loss and the Chamber of Loss are still later progression points.

Do not confuse the missing Viconia conversation with a locked Threshold. The first is a possible post-combat scene issue; the second has explicit ways to open it. If Viconia is defeated but the quest journal still points toward Shadowheart’s parents, continue to the rear of the cloister and check the threshold rather than repeatedly replaying the fight without a reason. A pre-confrontation save is useful for testing whether the combat outcome mattered, but the available information does not establish that every absent conversation is caused by how Viconia was defeated.
How do I open the Threshold of Loss?
If Viconia is defeated and the journal still points you toward Shadowheart’s parents, go to the Threshold of Loss at the rear of the cloister. The locked threshold has three documented opening methods; on the Dark Justiciar route, it opens automatically.
Use Sleight of Hand
Pick the lock with a DC 30 Sleight of Hand check. This is a game-rule difficulty, not a reported success rate; prepare for the possibility that the check fails. If you use this method, make sure the character attempting the lock is actually making a Sleight of Hand check, and remember that the difficulty is substantial. A failed attempt does not mean the quest itself is blocked; the other documented routes remain available.
Cast Knock
The Knock spell is another documented way to open the Threshold. Use it on the locked door rather than repeating the earlier Mapping Room sequence. This is an alternate access method, not a solution for a scene that fails after the party is already inside the Chamber.
Make an offering to Shar
Place items with a combined value of at least 1,000 gold on Shar’s scale, then light the Pyre of Loss. The value requirement is an in-game threshold; it is not a purchase cost or a fee paid to a vendor. Check that the offering reaches the required total before lighting the pyre. If it does not, the offering route has not met its stated condition.
These routes address a locked door. If the threshold opens and you reach the Chamber but the parents’ encounter does not begin, repeating a door-opening method will not address that later problem. The Dark Justiciar route is a separate case: on that story path, the threshold opens automatically, so a lock that remains closed suggests you should re-check your location and story progress rather than apply the other route’s assumptions.
What should I check if the Chamber of Loss cutscene will not trigger?
First check the encounter’s basic conditions: Shadowheart should be present, and the party should have reached her chained parents, Arnell and Emmeline. If those conditions are met and the scene still does not start, preserve the current save and test a save from before the relevant encounter if one is available.
No reviewed official source establishes a universal fix for a missing Chamber of Loss scene. Do not assume that a long rest, a particular dialogue choice, or a console command will repair it. The evidence available does not support promising that any one of those actions will restart the encounter.

Keep the distinction between a normal progression gate and a missing scripted scene clear: the Threshold has documented ways to open it, but a scene that fails to begin after reaching the parents needs separate troubleshooting.
Check the stage in this order before concluding the scene is broken:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Confirm Shadowheart is with you. Her presence matters earlier in the House of Grief sequence, and she is central to this quest encounter.
- Confirm you are at the parents. The chamber contains Arnell and Emmeline in chains; getting into the Chamber is not necessarily the same as reaching the point where their encounter begins.
- Check the journal objective. Its wording may still be directing you to gain entry to the Chamber rather than signaling that a scene should already have played.
- Preserve your current state. If a save from before the relevant encounter exists, test it separately rather than overwriting the current save.
- Separate outcome from trigger. Whether Shadowheart saves her parents is a story decision; it does not determine whether the initial parents encounter should load.
If all of those checks pass and nothing happens, describe the failure precisely when reporting it: for example, “the Threshold opened, Shadowheart was present, and the party reached Arnell and Emmeline, but no scene began.” That is more actionable than saying only that the House of Grief will not progress, because the latter could refer to several different gates.
Does Shadowheart’s choice about her parents mean the quest is broken?
No. Whether Shadowheart saves her parents depends on her Shar/Selûne story branch and the final dialogue; the outcome of that choice is not a test of whether the Chamber encounter triggered correctly.
A maintained community quest reference describes prerequisites for Shadowheart’s autonomous choice to save them: at least 50 approval, two of three Act Three memories, and a conversation about the city’s smells before Viconia’s defeat. The listed memory locations are Allister Marnley’s grave, graffiti near the Baldur’s Gate waypoint, and the Night Orchid cave. These conditions concern her unprompted choice, not whether the parents’ cutscene should start.
The same reference describes persuasion checks for a Selûnite Shadowheart. If the scene begins but the outcome is not the one you wanted, that is a dialogue and story-path question, not evidence that missing memories universally lock the quest.
In practical terms, separate two questions: “Did the encounter start?” and “Did Shadowheart choose the result I wanted?” The 50-approval and two-memory conditions relate to her autonomous choice, not to whether the game should let you reach the parents. The three cited memory locations are Allister Marnley’s grave, graffiti near the Baldur’s Gate waypoint, and the Night Orchid cave; the city-smells conversation must also take place before Viconia’s defeat for the described unprompted branch. Missing one of those conditions may affect that outcome, but it does not establish that the Chamber scene is universally locked or broken.
If the scene plays and you are deciding what to say, the relevant question is your intended story outcome and Shadowheart’s path. The cited reference describes persuasion checks for a Selûnite Shadowheart, but it does not justify treating a particular dialogue choice as a technical reset. Do not replay unrelated steps solely because the parents’ fate differed from your expectation.

What technical troubleshooting is reasonable after the story checks?
If the passage, fight, threshold, and encounter sequence still fail to progress, use general game troubleshooting rather than assuming a quest-specific repair exists. Larian’s general guidance includes verifying the installation, checking whether the issue persists without installed mods, and submitting a bug report when the failure can be reproduced.
- Keep a recovery save. Preserve the current save before changing files or mods, particularly on an established playthrough.
- Verify the installation. On Steam, use its file-integrity verification feature. In GOG Galaxy, use Verify / Repair.
- Consider LevelCache guidance on PC. Larian provides general LevelCache troubleshooting guidance; follow its instructions for your installation rather than deleting unrelated files.
- Check mod state carefully. See whether the problem persists without installed mods. Larian warns that third-party files can remain after updates, and changing mods on an established save can itself create risks.
- Report a reproducible failure. Describe what you expected, what happened instead, your platform and mod state, and include a save from at or before the failure.
These are general troubleshooting steps, not a verified Chamber of Loss cutscene fix. A bug report is more useful when it identifies the exact stage that fails—for example, whether the passage never appears, the Viconia conversation is absent, or the parents’ scene does not start after reaching them.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Platform and mod state matter when comparing symptoms. A clean installation check is not the same as replaying a story branch, and a mod-free test can be difficult on a long-running save. Larian warns that third-party files may remain after an update, so simply updating the game does not prove that a mod-related issue has disappeared. Take care before removing or changing mods on an established save, and retain a save that captures the failure. If the same behavior can be reproduced, include the platform, whether mods are installed, the expected next event, the observed result, and a save at or before the point where progress stops.
What does the quest journal tell you?
The Daughter of Darkness quest journal, as reproduced by bg3.wiki, gives the next objective as: “We must gain entry to the Chamber of Loss, where Shadowheart’s parents are being held captive.” That wording points to the Chamber as the next destination; it does not itself diagnose a bug or guarantee that a scene has failed.
Use the objective as a routing clue. If it says to gain entry, check the Threshold of Loss at the rear of the cloister and use one of its documented opening methods. Once you are in the Chamber and have reached the parents, the problem has moved beyond the door objective. The journal sentence does not promise a particular cutscene trigger or tell you that the missing scene can be fixed by a single action.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should I buy another copy to fix the quest?
No. A different copy of Baldur’s Gate 3 does not repair an existing save or change the quest state in that save. If you are shopping for a separate reason, Larian describes playable-on-disc physical editions for PS5 and Xbox, while its PC physical edition uses a downloader disc and requires an internet connection. Treat that as an optional format difference, not as a troubleshooting step or a fix for a stuck encounter.

How do I fix the House of Grief encounter if it will not progress?
First identify the stalled point. Bring Shadowheart to the Mapping Room bench to reveal the passage; check the post-fight sequence if Viconia is defeated; use a documented method to open the Threshold of Loss; and, if the party is already at Arnell and Emmeline, check Shadowheart’s presence and preserve a save. A missing Chamber scene has no established universal fix.
Why is there no passage after the Mapping Room?
Shadowheart may not have been present for the mapping. Bring her into the active party, let her use the stone bench, and allow the sequence to finish. Without her, the concealed entrance can require an Investigation check. Her presence also waives the otherwise applicable Mapping fee.

What can I do if the Threshold of Loss door will not open?
The documented routes are a DC 30 Sleight of Hand check, the Knock spell, or placing items worth at least 1,000 gold on Shar’s scale and then lighting the Pyre of Loss. The door opens automatically on the Dark Justiciar route.
Does defeating Viconia finish Shadowheart’s parents quest?
No. Defeating Viconia resolves the House of Grief investigation milestone, but the parents portion of Daughter of Darkness continues through the Threshold of Loss and Chamber of Loss.
Could Viconia’s missing post-fight scene be related to how I defeated her?
A maintained community quest reference says Viconia ordinarily survives combat knocked out for a post-fight conversation, and notes that defeating her outside combat can kill her and prevent that scene. This is a possible explanation, not a diagnosis or guaranteed repair. A pre-confrontation save and ordinary combat can be a diagnostic test.
Do the 50 approval and memory requirements affect whether the parents’ scene starts?
No. The community reference associates at least 50 approval, two of three Act Three memories, and the city-smells conversation before Viconia’s defeat with Shadowheart’s autonomous choice to save her parents. Those conditions affect that unprompted outcome, not whether the encounter should trigger.
Are there published odds that a particular fix will work?
No reliable published bug rate or measured success rate for these remedies is established. Treat the listed routes as documented game mechanics or general troubleshooting, not as fixes with a known probability of success.
Does the parents’ fate prove the Chamber encounter triggered correctly?
No. The story outcome depends on Shadowheart’s branch and dialogue, while whether the encounter starts is a separate progression question. A choice you did not expect is not, by itself, evidence of a technical failure.
Should I remove mods from an existing save to troubleshoot this?
Be cautious: Larian warns that third-party files can remain after updates, and changing mods on an established save can create risks. Preserve a separate recovery save before making changes, and follow the game support guidance for your platform.
What should I include in a bug report?
Describe the expected event and what happened instead, identify your platform and mod state, and attach a save from at or before the failure if possible. Specify whether the issue is the passage, Viconia’s conversation, the locked Threshold, or the parents’ scene.
Will buying a different edition fix a stuck save?
No. Another copy does not repair the quest state in an existing save. Physical formats are a separate purchase question: Larian describes playable-on-disc PS5 and Xbox editions, while the PC edition uses a downloader disc and requires internet.
The Bottom Line
Pinpoint the last completed step before trying a fix. Shadowheart at the Mapping Room bench addresses the hidden passage; the Threshold of Loss has three documented opening routes; and Viconia’s defeat is not the parents’ final encounter. If Shadowheart is present and the party has reached Arnell and Emmeline but no scene starts, keep a recovery save and use cautious, general troubleshooting—there is no verified universal cutscene repair.
