A VPN is not a dependable, proven way to lower Genshin Impact ping. It changes the route your traffic takes, so it could help on a particular connection if that route works better—but it could also make no difference or worsen the connection. HoYoverse’s connection-error guidance recommends disabling VPNs or proxies, and the available testing does not establish a Genshin-specific winner. HoYoverse’s connection-error guidance, updated September 16, 2025, recommends “Disabling any VPN or proxy.” That is troubleshooting advice for connection errors, not a blanket statement about whether VPNs are permitted or a measurement of their effect on ping. It does mean that a VPN should not be your first troubleshooting step when the connection is already failing.

The honest answer to “What are the five best VPNs for Genshin Impact ping?” is that a defensible five-provider ranking is not established. General gaming VPN coverage does not fill that gap: PC Gamer’s April 29, 2026 guide describes Counter-Strike 2 testing, while TechRadar’s June 17, 2026 guide offers general gaming advice. Neither is a Genshin Impact performance comparison. Naming five providers as proven ping reducers would claim more than those tests show.
Why the same VPN can help one player and hurt another
Your direct route is determined by your internet provider, local network, peering arrangements, geography, and the game service handling your session. A VPN inserts its own server and route between you and that service. If your normal path is congested or poorly routed, the VPN path might be more consistent. If the VPN server is farther away, busy, or connected through a less favorable path, the extra hop can increase delay or cause instability.
That is why a provider’s number of locations, a “gaming” label, or a test in another title cannot predict your Genshin result. Even changing the VPN exit location can change the outcome. Freezing, stuttering, or slow rendering
A game that freezes or stutters is not necessarily experiencing high network latency. HoYoverse’s October 23, 2025 guidance for crashing, lagging, or freezing recommends checking system specifications, graphics settings, background apps, game-file integrity, and PC graphics drivers. Those checks address device and game-performance problems; changing a network route does not substitute for them.
How do you troubleshoot Genshin Impact connection problems?
Change one variable at a time where possible. That makes it easier to tell whether the symptom responds to a network change, a game-client check, or a device-performance fix.
- Record a baseline. Note the displayed in-game latency, the time, your connection type, and the game server you selected. Repeat observations across comparable sessions rather than relying on a single reading. This gives you a reference point; it does not by itself diagnose the cause.
- Compare connection types. HoYoverse recommends switching between Wi-Fi, mobile data, and a wired connection when investigating connection trouble. If you cannot use all three, compare the options available to you. A wired test can help identify whether Wi-Fi contributes to the problem, but it cannot guarantee lower ping.
- Restart network equipment and reduce congestion. Restart your network devices and, where practical, reduce other devices’ network use during a test. If conditions improve, repeat the comparison before attributing the change to any one adjustment.
- Turn off VPNs and proxies for the initial diagnosis. This follows HoYoverse’s connection-error advice. If you were already using one, compare the direct connection with the VPN off before making a judgment about performance.
- Check the client. Follow the official guidance for the platform you use rather than assuming that a PC procedure applies to every device.
- Branch to device-performance checks if the symptom is stuttering or freezing. Use HoYoverse’s October 23, 2025 guidance to check system requirements, graphics settings, background apps, game-file integrity, and—on PC—graphics drivers.
If the problem remains after these checks, keep the observations you recorded: the times, connection types, server selection, and whether the issue was latency, disconnection, or stuttering. Those details make a support request more useful than describing every symptom simply as “lag.”

Run a controlled comparison rather than relying on a provider’s general claim or a single good session. Keep the game server and other conditions as similar as possible, and compare the VPN connection with the direct connection.
- Choose one repeatable baseline. Use the same device, connection type, and selected game server for the direct and VPN comparisons. Record the in-game latency and the time of each session.
- Write down the test conditions. Include your country or general location, internet provider, platform, connection type, selected game server, VPN exit location, and protocol. These details are essential if you later compare services or report the result. Do not treat an undocumented result as a general ranking.
- Compare like with like. Test with the VPN off and then on in similar conditions. If your network is unusually busy in one session, or the game server changes between comparisons, treat the result as inconclusive rather than crediting the VPN.
- Repeat the comparison. A single reading cannot establish a consistent improvement. Look for a result that recurs across several comparable sessions, and keep track of whether disconnections or other connection errors also change.
- Test more than one nearby exit option only if needed. A different exit location is a different route, so record it separately. Do not combine several locations into one average that hides a poor result from a particular route.
- Use the same selected game server. If the server changes, you have changed another variable. A result from a different server cannot cleanly show that the VPN route itself improved the connection.
- Check stability, not only the displayed number. Note spikes, failed logins, disconnects, and reconnects as well as the latency reading. A slightly lower number is not a useful trade if the session becomes unreliable.
- Stop if it makes the problem worse. If the VPN is associated with higher latency, connection errors, or disconnections in your repeated comparisons, switch it off and continue troubleshooting without it.
This method can tell you whether a particular VPN connection appears useful on your setup; it cannot prove that the provider is best for Genshin Impact generally. A meaningful published performance comparison would need to identify the tester’s location, internet provider, game server, platform, test date, and repeated measurements. The general gaming guides cited above do not provide a Genshin-specific comparison on those terms.
How should you interpret the result?
If the direct connection is consistently better, there is no reason to pay for a VPN to solve this problem. What should you look for if you are comparing VPNs anyway?
There is no evidence-based Genshin ping ranking to use as a shortcut. If you are comparing VPN services for a personal test, treat advertised general gaming performance as a reason to investigate—not as proof of a result on your connection.
- Nearby routing options: Check whether the service offers locations relevant to your own route and the game server you use. The existence of a location does not establish that its route will improve latency.
- Device support: Verify that the service supports the platform on which you play. Do not assume support for one device means support for another. Check requirements before subscribing, especially if you play on more than one platform.
- Protocol options: Compare the available connection protocols if this matters to your setup, but do not interpret a protocol label as a Genshin performance result. If you change protocols during testing, record each result separately.
- Current price: Check the provider’s current monthly or term pricing directly before paying. Prices, introductory offers, and renewal rates can change. No provider-specific price is established here, so a precise cost comparison would be misleading.

Is a wired connection worth testing?
Yes, if your device and network equipment support it: HoYoverse recommends trying a cabled connection as part of connection troubleshooting. A wired comparison can help you determine whether Wi-Fi is contributing to your issue, but it is a diagnostic step, not a promise that ping will fall.
If you need a cable to run the test, a Cat6 Ethernet cable is a practical product category to consider. Before buying, check that your device and router or network equipment have compatible Ethernet ports and that the cable is long enough for your setup. Confirm where the cable will run so it does not create a trip hazard or require an adapter your device cannot use. The useful result is the comparison between your wired and wireless sessions, not the cable label on its own.
If wired and wireless results are effectively the same, the test has still answered a useful question: Wi-Fi may not be the main cause of the symptom. If the wired session is more stable, continue using the connection that performs better when practical and investigate the wireless environment rather than assuming a VPN is needed.

When should you avoid changing routing?
