For financial advisers, traditional automation is usually the better fit for stable, repeatable work with structured inputs and a predefined result; generative AI is more useful as an assistant for language-heavy tasks such as summarizing documents or drafting communications. They are not mutually exclusive: a firm can automate the routing of a client request and use a generative tool to prepare a draft response for an adviser to review. The choice should turn on the task’s variability, the consequences of error, data handling, and the controls the firm can sustain—not on which technology sounds newer.

What is the difference between generative AI and traditional automation?

Traditional automation follows configured rules and steps. Generative AI produces new content—such as a summary or draft—based on patterns learned from large datasets. In financial-advice work, the practical difference is how predictable the output is: a rule-based process can produce repeatable results when its inputs and rules stay stable, while a generative system can respond flexibly to varied language but needs its output checked.

FP Canada describes generative AI as creating content from learned patterns, in contrast with traditional AI models that primarily classify or predict. Rules-based automation is a separate, simpler idea: it executes instructions a firm has configured, such as routing a task when a particular form arrives. These categories can overlap in a workflow, but they do not do the same job.

  • Traditional automation asks: “When this defined event happens, what specified action should follow?”
  • Generative AI asks: “Given this material and request, what useful language or content can I produce?”

For example, a firm might use automation to assign an incoming client form to the right team member, then use a generative tool to create a draft summary of the client’s accompanying letter. The first action can be defined in advance; the second depends on interpreting and expressing information. A person should still check that the summary is accurate and appropriate before relying on or sharing it.

This is a task-selection decision, not a contest in which one technology makes the other obsolete. The fact that a tool is called “AI” does not make it suitable for every workflow, and a rules-based process may still be the more useful improvement when a task is routine and clearly specified.

Which financial-adviser tasks fit each approach?

Use rules-based automation for repeatable actions with stable inputs. Consider generative AI for language processing or drafting where a human can review the result before it is used. Keep professional judgment and consequential client decisions under human responsibility.

Good candidates for traditional automation

Routine workflow steps are candidates when a firm can define both the trigger and the expected action, including what should happen when the case does not fit the rule. Examples include:

  • Routing a task to a staff member or team when a defined event occurs.
  • Sending reminders based on a configured schedule or status.
  • Transferring information between forms and fields when the mapping is known.
  • Updating a routine status when a specified step has been completed.

These are examples of the general rules-based category, not claims about a particular product or measured savings. Before automating one, identify exceptions: a missing field, conflicting information, an unusual client request, or a process change may require a person to intervene. A rule that works only when every case is ordinary is not a complete workflow.

Potential uses for generative AI assistance

Generative AI is more plausible when the work involves varied language, lengthy material, or creating an initial draft. FINRA describes potential uses that include summarizing complex documents and firm research; querying a member firm’s policies and procedures; drawing issuer information from SEC filings and earnings-call transcripts; and producing summaries for compliance personnel reviewing possible misconduct. These are described as potential uses, not proof that every firm has deployed them successfully.

The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) says firms are exploring AI for client engagement, compliance and risk monitoring, and operational efficiency, including meeting notes and data extraction. That finding signals areas of exploration in the UK advice market; it does not establish that the tools perform reliably in every firm or that they deliver a particular return.

CFP Board’s guide addresses professional use of generative AI, and FP Canada’s guidance covers uses in planning, communications, analytics, marketing, and internal workflows for CFP® and QAFP® certificants. The relevant lesson is not that every task in those categories should be handed to a model. It is that language and information-processing tasks may be assisted, provided the professional applies appropriate checks and obligations.

Work that should remain human-led

An adviser remains responsible for advice, client context, the suitability of communications, and decisions with material consequences. A model can help organize information or prepare a draft, but it does not take on the adviser’s professional accountability. A human review should be meaningful: the reviewer needs enough context and expertise to identify a wrong fact, a missing qualification, an unsuitable tone, or an inappropriate conclusion—not merely approve text because it reads fluently.

How should a firm compare the options for a specific task?

Assess the workflow before choosing a tool. The most important questions are whether inputs and steps are stable, how much output variation is acceptable, what an error could do, and whether the firm can supervise and document the process.

Decision factor Rules-based automation Generative AI assistance
Task structure Best suited to stable, structured inputs and defined steps. Potentially useful for varied language, interpretation, summarization, or drafting.
Output tolerance Fits tasks where the same conditions should lead to the same configured action. Output can vary, so the firm should decide what variation is acceptable and check the result.
Error consequences Consider whether a wrong trigger, mapping, or status change could affect a client or downstream process. Consider whether an inaccurate, incomplete, biased, or inappropriate output could be relied on or passed to a client.
Records and explainability Record the trigger, rule, action, exceptions, and changes to the process. Consider what input, system or model, generated output, and human review need to be recorded to explain the result.
Data handling Check the data used by the workflow and the systems through which it moves. Establish what client or firm information is sent to a provider, retained, or used to improve a service.
Supervision Assign responsibility for maintaining rules, monitoring exceptions, and responding when the process changes. Assign responsibility for checking outputs, handling exceptions, and monitoring the system and its use.
Integration and economics Assess whether it fits current systems and reduces enough friction to justify implementation and oversight. Assess the same fit and cost questions, including the review effort required to use outputs safely.

This is a practical decision framework synthesized from professional and regulatory guidance, not an official scoring tool or regulator-prescribed test. A firm can apply it to one narrow task at a time rather than making a sweeping decision to “adopt AI.”

Ask what happens when the task is not a normal case

For a rule-based workflow, define the exception path before launch. What happens if a required field is blank, two records conflict, or the trigger is no longer valid? For generative AI, define what should happen when the source material is incomplete, the request falls outside the tool’s intended role, or the output cannot be verified. In either case, a person should be able to identify and resolve cases the process cannot safely handle.

Include review effort in the comparison

A generative tool may create a useful first draft, but the time required to check facts, context, privacy, and suitability is part of the task’s total effort. Similarly, rules-based automation requires someone to maintain the configured process and inspect exceptions. Compare each option with the work it creates as well as the work it may reduce; the available guidance does not establish a universal return on investment for either approach.

How can automation and generative AI work together?

A workflow can combine deterministic actions with generative assistance while preserving a clear human checkpoint. For example, configured rules could route a document to a designated queue; a generative system could prepare a summary for staff; and a qualified employee could check the summary before it informs a client communication or a consequential decision.

  1. Define the task and its boundary. State what the workflow is meant to do and what it must not decide or communicate.
  2. Use rules for defined transitions. Configure stable triggers, routing, reminders, or field transfers where the expected action is known.
  3. Use generative assistance only for a bounded language task. Specify whether it is summarizing, extracting, or drafting, rather than treating it as an unrestricted decision-maker.
  4. Place review before reliance or release. Identify the person who checks the output, the information they need to check it, and how exceptions are escalated.
  5. Keep a record that fits the risk. Preserve enough information about the input, process, generated content, review, and disposition to explain how the work was handled.
  6. Reassess when something changes. Changes to the workflow, data, provider, or system may affect whether the controls remain appropriate.

This is an implementation pattern, not a claim that any particular system supports a specific integration. A firm should verify how its chosen tools behave and what records they make available before relying on such a workflow.

What safeguards should advisers ask about before using generative AI?

Ask how the tool handles client information, how outputs are verified, who supervises use, and how third-party risks are managed. Controls should be proportionate to the use: a draft that is reviewed before use has a different risk profile from output that is sent to clients or influences a consequential decision without meaningful review.

Confidentiality and data handling

Before entering client or firm information, determine what data is sent to the provider, whether it is retained, and whether it is used to improve the service. Restrict the information supplied to what the task requires, and follow the firm’s confidentiality and data-governance processes. CFP Board’s February 25, 2025 guide points CFP® professionals to confidentiality safeguards; FINRA’s notice also identifies privacy and data integrity among the issues firms should consider.

Accuracy, relevance, and bias

Generative output should be checked against dependable source material and the client’s actual circumstances. A plausible-sounding response may still contain errors or omit a material qualification. Reviewers should also consider whether the result is relevant to the task and whether bias could affect the output. CFP Board’s guide highlights output verification, data integrity, and bias, while ESMA identifies data quality and algorithmic bias as concerns for firms providing investment services to retail clients in the EU.

Supervision, reliability, and third-party risk

FINRA Regulatory Notice 24-09 discusses governance, model risk, data privacy and integrity, reliability, supervision, and third-party technology. Firms should know who owns the process, who monitors exceptions, and what happens if a provider or embedded AI feature changes. A tool built into an existing service still deserves attention: FINRA says its notice applies to member firms’ use of generative AI whether developed internally or provided by a third party, including embedded features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Explainability and records

A firm should be able to explain what information and process contributed to a result, who reviewed it, and what was done with it. For a configured rule, that may mean documenting the trigger, action, and exception handling. For generative assistance, consider how to preserve the relevant input, output, review, and disposition in a way that fits the firm’s procedures and obligations. The record should help explain the work; it should not create a false impression that a generated result is independently verified.

What do regulators and professional bodies say about advisers’ duties?

The exact obligations depend on the professional and jurisdiction involved, but the guidance cited here does not treat technology as a substitute for existing responsibilities. Check the standards that apply to the firm and individual adviser rather than assuming one country’s guidance governs another.

United States: FINRA member firms

FINRA Regulatory Notice 24-09, issued June 27, 2024, says existing technology-neutral rules and securities laws continue to apply to member firms using generative AI. FINRA states: “FINRA’s rules—which are intended to be technology neutral—and the securities laws more generally, continue to apply when member firms use Gen AI or similar technologies in the course of their businesses, just as they apply when member firms use any other technology or tool.” The notice discusses potential concerns and governance considerations; FINRA explicitly says it does not create new requirements or interpretations.

What does the SEC’s AI-washing case mean for advisers?

It is a warning to describe AI use accurately, not evidence that using AI is prohibited. On March 18, 2024, the SEC announced settled charges against investment advisers Delphia (USA) Inc. and Global Predictions Inc. over false or misleading statements about their AI use; the firms agreed to $400,000 in total civil penalties.

For a practice, the practical implication is to make public and client-facing claims precise. Do not imply a system performs work it does not perform, or suggest that AI capabilities are more extensive than they are. A firm should be able to support descriptions of how a tool is used, what its role is, and what human oversight remains. The settlement concerns misleading statements; it should not be recast as a ban on AI tools.

How widely are advice firms using or considering AI?

One useful snapshot is the FCA’s 2025 survey of UK advice firms, but it should be read within its survey context and firm-size categories. The results point to differing levels of use or consideration, not a universal pattern and not a comparison of the results achieved by AI and traditional automation.

FCA 2025 survey finding Reported figure How to interpret it
Firms meeting clients in person 99% A finding about the surveyed UK advice-firm context; not a global figure.
Large firms using or considering AI in the advice process 95% The FCA’s reported large-firm category; not an outcome or effectiveness measure.
Medium-sized firms using or considering AI in the advice process 81% The FCA’s reported medium-sized category; not an outcome or effectiveness measure.
Small firms using or considering AI in the advice process 48% The FCA’s reported small-firm category; not an outcome or effectiveness measure.
Small firms reporting near-term plans to deploy AI within advice processes Around 14% Plans reported by small firms in the survey, not completed deployments.
Medium-sized firms reporting near-term plans to deploy AI within advice processes Around 38% Plans reported by medium-sized firms in the survey, not completed deployments.

The FCA also reports firms exploring AI for client engagement, compliance and risk monitoring, and operational efficiency such as meeting notes and data extraction. The figures do not establish ROI, prove that a tool is safe or effective, or show that all firms in a category have implemented AI. They help describe the UK survey’s picture, not decide whether a particular firm’s task is a good fit.

How can an adviser choose a first task to assess?

Start with one bounded, observable task rather than a broad mandate to deploy AI. A useful candidate has a clear owner, a known input, a defined result, and a way to check whether the process is working as intended.

  1. Write down the current process. Identify who does each step, what information they use, where exceptions arise, and what happens next.
  2. Classify the work. If it is mainly a predictable trigger and action, assess rules-based automation. If it requires interpreting varied language or creating a draft, consider whether generative assistance could help under review.
  3. Set boundaries. Specify which information may be used, what the tool may produce, and which decisions or communications remain human-led.
  4. Assess the downside of error. Consider potential client impact, how likely an error is to be detected, and how quickly a person can correct it.
  5. Assign controls and ownership. Name the person who reviews results, handles exceptions, maintains the process, and monitors provider or system changes.
  6. Review the actual workflow before expanding. Check whether the approach is useful in the firm’s setting and whether its recordkeeping, privacy, integration, and oversight needs are manageable.

There is no regulator-prescribed score in the guidance cited here that ranks automation against generative AI. This checklist is a way to make the choice explicit, surface risks, and avoid choosing a tool simply because it is available or marketed as intelligent.

What should a financial adviser remember when comparing them?

  • Traditional automation is a strong starting point for stable, repeatable steps whose actions can be specified in advance.
  • Generative AI may assist with language, summaries, and drafts, but variability makes verification and human review central.
  • The two approaches can appear in the same workflow, with defined automation handling transitions and a person checking any generated material before it is relied upon.
  • Confidentiality, accuracy, bias, reliability, supervision, records, and provider risks belong in the assessment, not as afterthoughts.
  • Professional duties continue to apply. Their exact form depends on the jurisdiction, firm, and professional standards relevant to the adviser.

For a financial practice, the most defensible choice is the one that fits a particular task and can be supervised: automate what is stable, use generative assistance selectively where language work may benefit, and retain human responsibility for advice and consequential outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a generative AI tool give financial advice directly to my clients?

The guidance cited here supports treating generative tools as assistance, not transferring responsibility for advice or client outcomes to a model. Whether a particular client-facing use is permissible depends on the adviser’s jurisdiction, professional standards, the service design, and the controls in place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does using a generative AI feature built into another software product change a firm’s responsibilities?

For FINRA member firms, FINRA’s June 2024 notice says its existing rules apply whether generative AI is developed internally, supplied by a third party, or embedded in a product. Firms should assess the feature’s data handling, supervision, and reliability rather than assuming integration removes the need for oversight.

Is AI use in financial advice already common in every country?

No. The FCA figures in this article describe a 2025 survey of UK advice firms, while the other cited materials are professional or regulatory guidance from specific jurisdictions. They do not establish a worldwide adoption rate.

Does the SEC’s AI-washing settlement mean investment advisers cannot use AI?

No. The SEC announcement concerned misleading statements about AI use, not a general prohibition on using AI. It is relevant to how accurately a firm describes its tools and their role.
