Gemini app makes sharing more prominent in chats, boosts icon

Google’s Gemini app has been updated to make sharing feel more “in-chat” instead of something you hunt for after the fact. You’ll notice sharing controls show up more prominently while you’re working with responses, and a new boosted icon may appear depending on the chat and your app version.

This guide is a practical reference for what those changes mean and how to use them reliably—on Android, iPhone, and iPad, plus what to do when the UI doesn’t behave the way you expect.

What changed in the Gemini app

The update focuses on two things: (1) clearer sharing entry points directly within chat threads, and (2) a “boosted” icon that signals an enhanced interaction tied to the content you’re viewing or sharing. The exact wording and placement can vary by platform and Gemini app version.

In most cases, you’ll see share actions available closer to the message you want to send—reducing taps and cutting down on copy/paste friction.

Why the sharing UI is more prominent (and what it affects)

When sharing is more visible, it changes the workflow. Instead of exporting at the end, you can share a specific response while the context is fresh—useful for troubleshooting, collaboration, or sending a single recommendation to a coworker or friend.

Be aware of two side effects:

  • More accidental sharing risk: quick taps can send the wrong message fragment if your finger lands on the wrong action.
  • Formatting differences: sharing systems may convert Gemini output to text, cards, or link-style previews depending on your device and the target app.

How to share from a Gemini chat now

Sharing usually targets either (a) a specific message block, or (b) the current chat context, depending on what the UI offers in your build.

On Android (Gemini app)

On Android, the share control typically appears near the response you’re looking at. Your next step is the standard Android share sheet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Gemini app on your Android phone or tablet.
  2. Open the chat that contains the response you want to share.
  3. Tap the Share action associated with that message (often shown as a share icon).
  4. Select the destination app from the share sheet (for example, Messages, Gmail, WhatsApp, or a note app).
  5. Review the preview to confirm you’re sending the correct text or content chunk.
  6. Tap Send (or the equivalent action in the destination app).

On iPhone and iPad (Gemini app)

On iOS, the Gemini message share action triggers the iOS share sheet, which makes destinations and permissions feel consistent across apps.

  1. Open the Gemini app on iPhone or iPad.
  2. Find the message in a chat you want to share.
  3. Tap the Share option shown for that message.
  4. From the share sheet, choose a destination (Messages, Mail, Notes, WhatsApp, and more).
  5. Check the content preview for truncation or missing formatting.
  6. Send using the destination app’s final button.

On web (Gemini in a browser)

If you use Gemini in a browser, the share mechanism usually appears as a per-message action or a chat-level control, depending on your interface version.

  1. Open your browser and go to Gemini.
  2. Open the chat containing the response.
  3. Click the Share option associated with the message (if available).
  4. Choose how you want to share (send to an app, copy a link, or copy text—exact options depend on the build).
  5. Verify the result before distributing it.

What the boosted icon means

The boosted icon is a UI hint that the app is applying a “highlighted” state to the content you’re interacting with. In practice, it often relates to making the response easier to share, prioritize, or reuse.

  • Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]

Because rollout timing can vary, you may see the icon only for certain chats, certain message types, or after the app learns which messages you’re likely to share.

When you’ll see it

  • After generating a response that’s likely shareable (for example, a plan, checklist, or summarized recommendation).
  • When your message interaction matches a supported sharing flow (for example, you open the share action for that response).
  • After updating the Gemini app, when the new UI elements finish syncing.

Common outcomes after you boost

Depending on your platform and chat, boosting can result in one or more of these behaviors:

  • The share action becomes more visible or pre-selected for that message.
  • The output is formatted more clearly for sharing (shorter paragraphs, better bullet structure, or preserved line breaks).
  • A follow-up action may become available alongside the message.

When boosting doesn’t appear to do anything

If the icon appears but the results don’t change, try these checks:

  • Refresh the chat (close and reopen the app or reload the page).
  • Wait a few seconds; some UI elements update asynchronously.
  • Confirm you’re boosting the intended message (boosted icons are often message-specific).

Best practices for sharing chat content

More prominent sharing is convenient—so you need slightly more discipline. The best outcomes come from sending the smallest useful chunk with enough context to stand alone.

Share the right parts

If your recipient only needs one decision point, share just the specific answer segment rather than the entire chat history. That reduces confusion and prevents irrelevant or sensitive details from traveling with the message.

Avoid accidental personal data exposure

Before you hit Send, scan for names, phone numbers, addresses, and any text you wouldn’t want in a screenshot or forwarded message.

Preserve context for the recipient

If you’re sharing advice that depends on assumptions, include a short lead-in such as “Assumes we’re using X” or “Goal: Y.” A one-line context note beats a whole chat dump.

Troubleshooting

Most sharing issues come from UI state, app caching, or destination-app quirks. Start with the simplest fix first.

Sharing buttons are missing or disabled

  1. Update the Gemini app from your app store.
  2. Force close the app and reopen it.
  3. Sign out and back in to Gemini if you suspect a session mismatch.
  4. Check your device date/time settings (incorrect time can break auth and UI features).
  5. Try sharing from a different chat to rule out message-specific bugs.

The boosted icon doesn’t show up

  1. Confirm you’re viewing a message type that supports boosting (some responses don’t trigger the icon).
  2. Update the Gemini app to the latest available version.
  3. Reload the chat thread to refresh UI state.
  4. Temporarily disable and re-enable your VPN (if you use one) to rule out network gating.

Shared content looks truncated or formatting breaks

Android and iOS share sheets often convert formatting differently depending on the target app. Fix it by:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choosing a different destination app (for example, share to Notes instead of a chat app).
  2. Copying the text and pasting manually to preserve line breaks.
  3. Using shorter chunks instead of long multi-paragraph responses.

App UI seems out of sync

When the UI is “almost right” but not consistent, try these quick resets:

  • Android: Settings > Apps > Gemini > Storage > Clear cache (avoid clearing data unless necessary).
  • iPhone/iPad: restart the device, then reopen Gemini.
  • Web: hard refresh the page and try another browser tab.

Privacy and permissions you should check

Sharing controls make distribution easy, but they don’t remove the responsibility to confirm what’s in the content you’re sending.

Share permissions on mobile

On iOS and Android, destination apps may require permissions (like notification or contact access) to complete the share flow. If the share sheet shows options but sending fails, check permissions for the target app in your system settings.

Clipboard and notification considerations

If your share workflow includes a copy step, be mindful of clipboard managers and automation tools that may read clipboard contents. Also check notifications in the destination app to ensure previews don’t expose sensitive details on locked screens.

Alternatives if the built-in share doesn’t work

If the share action is broken in your build or doesn’t preserve formatting, you still have reliable workarounds.

Copy and paste

Use the message’s Copy option (or long-press the text) and then paste into Messages, Mail, or Notes. This is often the most predictable way to keep content intact.

Screenshot + redact

For quick distribution of visuals or heavily formatted outputs, screenshots can work well. Before sharing, redact personal details—names, account info, and any unique identifiers.

Export from other Gemini surfaces (if available)

Some Gemini experiences offer export-like features (depending on platform). If you see options such as download, share link, or copy formatted response, use those rather than copying partial chat fragments.

Common FAQs

Does the boosted icon change the answer quality?

In most interfaces, it’s a UI/interaction cue tied to how content is prioritized or shared, not a guarantee of higher accuracy. Treat it as a workflow indicator—verify the content like you would with any Gemini response.

Will sharing include the whole chat history?

Usually, sharing targets a message block or the selected response. Still, always check the preview in the destination app before sending to confirm what content is included.

Why can’t I share a specific message?

Some message types may restrict sharing, or the UI may be temporarily disabled due to app state. Update the Gemini app, reload the chat, and try sharing from a different message to isolate the cause.

Can I share formatted output without it turning into a single paragraph?

Sometimes formatting is preserved when sharing into Notes or email drafts. If formatting breaks, copy and paste manually, or share shorter sections.

Bottom Line

The Gemini app’s newer sharing layout is designed to reduce friction: you can share from inside the chat with fewer taps, and the boosted icon signals a message-specific interaction that may improve share readiness. The key is to verify the share preview every time and send only the content your recipient actually needs.

If the UI changes don’t show up or sharing fails, use the troubleshooting steps above—update the app, refresh chat state, and fall back to copy/paste or Notes/email when formatting matters.
