Downgrading Google AI Plus normally does not stop the plan when you click the button. Google keeps the current Google One plan active until the end of the current billing cycle, then starts the lower plan at the next cycle. The renewal date shown in your Google One account is the date that controls the change.
Until that date, you generally keep the AI-tier Gemini access and other benefits attached to the current plan. When the old plan ends, Gemini features and chats that require that tier stop working, and your Google storage allowance changes to the quota of the plan you selected. Check the confirmation screen, renewal date, and storage usage before submitting the change.

When does a Google AI Plus downgrade take effect?
The downgrade takes effect at the start of your next billing cycle, not when you submit the request. Google’s billing guidance says your current plan remains active through the end of the paid billing period.
The click date is only the scheduling date
Choosing a lower plan creates a scheduled change. It does not normally remove AI benefits immediately, so a downgrade made halfway through a monthly period continues under the old plan until that period ends.

Your renewal date is the controlling date
Use the renewal date displayed in Google One as the practical deadline. If Google One shows that your membership renews on the 18th, the lower plan normally begins when that billing cycle closes and the next one starts on the 18th. The exact time displayed in your account and the confirmation details should take priority over assumptions based on the day you clicked.
How do I schedule a downgrade?
Google provides the same basic membership controls on the web and in its mobile apps. You must be signed in to the Google account that owns the Google One membership.
From Google One on the web
- Open Google One and go to Manage membership.
- Select Change membership plan.
- Under Downgrade options, choose the lower plan.
- Review the plan name, storage quota, effective date, and any billing notice shown on screen.
- Confirm the change and save the confirmation for your records.
From the Gemini web app
- Open Gemini and select Settings & help.
- Choose Manage subscription.
- Open the plan-change controls, select a lower available plan, and review the effective date.
- Confirm only after checking which Gemini and storage benefits will remain.
From Android
In the Google One app, open Manage subscriptions, choose Change membership plan, select the lower option, and confirm. The Gemini mobile app provides an equivalent route through Manage subscriptions. Its cancellation command is Cancel membership; use that only if you intend to end paid Google One storage rather than move to another paid tier.
What benefits do I keep before the downgrade date?
Because the old plan remains active through the current billing cycle, its plan-specific benefits normally continue until the renewal boundary.
- AI-tier Gemini access included with your current Google AI Plus membership.
- The ability to use plan-only Gemini features while the current plan is active.
- Expanded Google One storage for Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos under the existing quota.
- Gemini integrations in Gmail, Docs, and other Google services included for your account.
- Direct Google expert support and exclusive member benefits listed on your membership page.
Google describes these as benefits of the AI plan, so the precise list can differ by account, country, and the current plan catalogue. The membership page is the authoritative list for your subscription.

What stops when Google AI Plus ends?
At the next billing-cycle start, Google removes the benefits tied specifically to the old AI plan. The change is broader than losing a single model selector.

Google’s help documentation does not describe these changes as an immediate deletion of your account. It does state that chats requiring the ended tier cannot be started or continued, so export or copy anything you need while you can still open it.
What happens to my Google One storage after downgrading?
Your account moves to the storage allowance of the plan that becomes active. Google’s current plans listing describes Google AI Plus as including 2 TB total storage for Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail. A lower paid plan has the quota shown for that plan, while an account with no paid Google One storage has up to 15 GB at no charge.

Google’s documentation gives the new allowance but does not promise a particular deletion timetable for content above that allowance. Check storage usage before the downgrade, download or move anything you must retain, and reduce usage if the new quota will not cover the account. Plan names, quotas, and availability can change by country and over time.
Will Gemini Pro chats still work after the downgrade?
Not if the chat requires the AI tier that ended. Google says you lose the ability to start new chats with that tier and to continue chats created with it. A chat may still be visible in your history, but visibility is not the same as continued access to the model or its plan-only features.

Before the renewal date, identify conversations that contain instructions, drafts, or information you may need later. Copy the useful text into a document or another permitted workspace rather than assuming the old model will remain available after the plan change.
Will Google refund the unused part of my plan?
Do not assume that a downgrade produces a cash refund. Google’s treatment depends on the purchase channel and the exact plan change.

If you subscribed through Google Play, Apple, or another billing route, the store or payment channel can affect how adjustments are processed. Keep the confirmation showing the effective date and any credit language; Google does not promise one universal refund outcome for every downgrade.
How do monthly and annual billing changes differ?
Billing cadence can change the effective date even when the membership controls look similar. Google says a monthly-to-annual switch takes effect immediately, with remaining monthly time credited. An annual-to-monthly switch takes effect at the end of the existing annual term.

These rules concern the billing cadence and plan transition shown by Google. Your account’s confirmation screen should state the date and any credit more precisely than a generic example.

Can I re-upgrade to Google AI Plus later?
Yes. Google provides an Upgrade control for existing memberships and a Change membership plan flow in Google One. After a downgrade takes effect, use the same controls to select an available AI plan.
- Open Google One and go to Manage membership.
- Select Change membership plan or the displayed Upgrade option.
- Review the available AI plans, storage allowance, billing cadence, and start date.
- Confirm the purchase and verify that the new Gemini and storage benefits appear on the account.
Re-upgrade availability is not identical for every user. Google says plan availability, features, prices, and limits can vary by country, account, and the current catalogue. If an option is absent, check that you are using the original membership account and review the live plans shown there.
What should I check before confirming the downgrade?
- Renewal date: Record the date shown under your Google One membership.
- New quota: Compare current Drive, Gmail, and Photos usage with the lower plan’s stated allowance.
- Important Gemini work: Copy material from AI-tier chats you may need after the old plan ends.
- Integrations: Note any Gmail, Docs, or other workflows that depend on the AI plan.
- Billing channel: Identify whether Google One bills you directly or through Google Play, because adjustment rules can differ.
- Confirmation: Save the final screen showing the selected plan, effective date, and billing treatment.
What if the downgrade does not appear to work?
The AI features disappeared immediately
Reopen Google One and check the membership status and renewal date. A normal downgrade should leave the old plan active until the billing-cycle end; if the account instead shows an immediate termination, inspect the confirmation for whether you selected cancellation, changed billing cadence, or used a different Google account.

Google’s available plans depend on country, account, and current offerings. Sign in to the account that owns the membership, open the plan-change screen from Google One, and compare the options shown there with the plan you expected.
The storage allowance looks wrong
Refresh the membership page after the effective date and verify that the lower plan is active. If the account has no paid storage, Google documents up to 15 GB free; if you selected a paid lower plan, use the quota displayed for that plan rather than the 2 TB AI Plus allowance.
The billing adjustment is unclear
Review the purchase channel and the transaction confirmation. Google allows different outcomes for remaining value, including extra service days or a partial refund in some changes, so the specific notice attached to your transaction is more reliable than a general expectation.
How do I tell whether I downgraded or canceled?
A downgrade selects another Google One plan and schedules it for the next billing-cycle start. A cancellation ends paid membership at the cycle boundary and leaves the account with up to 15 GB of personal storage at no charge. If you still need paid storage but want fewer AI benefits, choose Change membership plan rather than Cancel membership.
