Gboard suggestions are now pills, getting simplified settings

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gboard updates often come with small UX changes, and the latest shift is one you’ll notice immediately: your typing suggestions are now presented as pill-shaped chips above (or near) the keyboard, and the settings experience has been simplified.

If your suggestion behavior suddenly feels different—or you can’t find the old toggles—this guide walks you through what’s actually changed, where the new controls live, and how to fix common issues.

What changed: Gboard suggestions as pills

Instead of a traditional suggestion strip, Gboard can show predictions as pill-shaped “chips” you can tap. The content is the same idea—word and phrase suggestions—but the visual layout is tighter and more tap-friendly.

Why pill-style suggestions feel different

Pills tend to be more responsive and easier to target with thumbs. They also make room for multiple suggestions of different lengths without cramming everything into a single row.

The change is mostly UI. Your ability to accept a suggestion (by tapping a pill), reject it (by continuing to type), and control correction behavior via settings remains the core workflow.

What you should expect to see on the keyboard

  • Pill suggestions appear as rounded chips (usually several at once).
  • Tap-to-accept works the same: selecting a pill inserts that word/phrase.
  • More options may appear if Gboard surfaces additional predictions for your current context.

The simplified settings: where the controls moved

“Simplified settings” usually means fewer places to look and more consolidated toggles. In practice, you’ll notice related options grouped together (text correction, languages, learning, gestures) rather than scattered across many submenus.

Also, labels can vary slightly by Android version and iOS version. If a toggle isn’t where you remember, use the closest matching heading (for example, “Text correction,” “Spelling,” or “Suggestions”).

Android (Gboard settings path)

On Android, the Gboard app provides the settings you need after you select it as your keyboard. The common path is:

  • Gboard app → Settings (gear icon) → sections like Text correction and Languages.

If you don’t see the Gboard app settings directly, you can also start from Android’s system keyboard settings and jump into Gboard.

iPhone and iPad (Gboard settings path)

On iOS, Gboard settings live inside the Gboard app and sometimes also in iOS keyboard settings. The common path is:

  • Settings app → General → Keyboards (or Keyboards depending on iOS) → select Gboard
  • Then use Gboard’s in-app settings for suggestion and correction options.

How to manage suggestion behavior

You can’t reliably treat pill-style suggestions as a “separate feature.” They’re the presentation layer for the suggestion engine. Control the behavior by adjusting text correction, dictionaries, and learning.

Turn suggestions on or off

Look for toggles under wording such as Suggestions, Text correction, or Show suggestions. If you disable suggestions, you’ll still type normally, but those pill chips won’t appear.

If your goal is simply fewer suggestions, you may prefer changing correction behavior rather than disabling everything.

Control auto-correct and text correction

Most suggestion “feels wrong” reports come from auto-correct being overly aggressive. In settings, search for:

  • Auto-correction (turn off or reduce behavior)
  • Spelling or Text correction options
  • Personal dictionary controls (words you’ve added)

Turning off auto-correct can make pill suggestions feel more predictable because Gboard won’t rewrite your text as you type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adjust swipe/gesture input (if available)

Swipe typing and gesture modes affect what your suggestions look like, because the input model feeds partial words into the prediction engine. If you recently turned gestures on (or off), that alone can change the suggestion set.

  • Check Glide typing, Swipe, or Gestures settings.
  • Match your preference across both languages if you use more than one keyboard language.

Manage languages and dictionaries

Suggestion chips are language-dependent. If your current language isn’t the one you expect, pills will recommend words from the active dictionary.

  • Confirm the active language on the keyboard (language selector on the spacebar or toolbar).
  • In Gboard settings, review the Languages list.
  • If you rely on custom terms, ensure your personal dictionary includes them.

Platform steps (fast path)

Use these quick flows when you want to change settings immediately after noticing pill suggestions.

  1. Open the Gboard app.
  2. Tap Settings (gear icon).
  3. Open Text correction (or the closest matching category).
  4. Toggle Auto-correction and Spelling according to your preference.
  5. Go back and open Languages.
  6. Confirm the correct languages are enabled and that the active one matches what you’re typing.

If you still see pill suggestions but they feel wrong, the fastest fix is usually disabling auto-correction and verifying the active language.

iPhone and iPad

Update Gboard’s correction and prediction options, then verify iOS keyboard language selection.

  1. Open the Gboard app (not the iOS keyboard list).
  2. Open Settings inside Gboard.
  3. Go to Text correction or similarly named categories.
  4. Adjust Auto-correction / Spelling.
  5. Return to iOS Settings → General → Keyboards.
  6. Verify Gboard is enabled and that the intended language is present.

On iOS, confusion often comes from having multiple languages enabled. Pills follow the active language mode, so confirm the language before debugging correction settings.

Troubleshooting: pills show up but suggestions are wrong

When you don’t like the pills, don’t start by assuming the pill UI is the issue. Start by checking the behavior drivers: language, correction toggles, and the keyboard input method itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Suggestions not appearing

If you see the pill area but it’s empty—or pills never show up—try this order:

  1. Confirm the keyboard is actually Gboard (not a different installed keyboard).
  2. Verify you didn’t disable suggestions under Text correction or Suggestions.
  3. Check active language on the keyboard and switch to the language you’re typing in.
  4. Restart the app you’re typing in (not just the keyboard).
  5. Reboot the phone if suggestions remain absent after the app restart.

Pills show unrelated words

This is almost always a language mismatch or a stale learning state. Fix it like this:

  • Switch to the correct language on the keyboard and type again.
  • Turn off auto-correct for a short test (2–3 sentences) to see if the wrong suggestions were being reinforced by corrections.
  • If you add custom words, ensure they’re in the active language’s dictionary.

Auto-correct keeps fighting you

If auto-correct overwrites your preferred spelling, disable it temporarily, then re-enable only if needed.

  1. Go to Gboard settings → Text correction.
  2. Turn off Auto-correction.
  3. Type a short paragraph (about 2–3 lines) using your usual vocabulary.
  4. If that fixes it, re-enable auto-correction gradually by adjusting any sub-options (for example, stricter vs. softer correction, if shown).

After an update, layout looks off

Sometimes pill sizing or spacing changes after an update, especially on devices with custom display settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check system font scaling (Android Display size / font size, iOS text size). Try restoring to default.
  • Clear Gboard’s keyboard cache if your device provides that option.
  • Update the Gboard app again via your app store to ensure the rollout finished.

If pills overlap buttons or feel misaligned, a reboot and app restart is the quickest sanity check.

Common mistakes that make suggestions feel broken

  • Wrong active language: pills will be “correct” for the wrong dictionary.
  • Mixed typing habits: switching between languages mid-sentence confuses predictions until you commit to one mode.
  • Personal dictionary not updated: if you added a nickname or company term, verify it’s stored under the same language you’re using.
  • Assuming pills can’t be changed: pill UI may be cosmetic, but behavior depends on correction and suggestion toggles.
  • Only changing one setting: for example, disabling auto-correct without checking suggestion toggles can still leave you unhappy with chips.

Alternatives if you hate pill suggestions

You may not get a perfect “classic strip” look on every rollout, but you can control how much you rely on pills.

Use tap-to-edit instead of tapping pills

Keep suggestions visible, but don’t accept them. Continue typing until the intended word is committed, then correct using the cursor controls.

This works best when your issue is “wrong chips,” not “no chips.”

Rely on manual word input plus correction

If chips distract you, disable auto-correct and focus on finishing the word yourself. You can still use taps for occasional corrections when Gboard shows an obviously right option.

Privacy and learning: what affects your suggestions

Gboard suggestions are informed by the language you select and the patterns it learns over time. If your suggestions suddenly change after a keyboard update, learning resets or language switching can be a factor.

If you’re reviewing privacy controls, look for toggles in Gboard settings that relate to learning, personalization, or cloud-based behavior (word storage and prediction improvements). The exact labels differ, but the intent is consistent: control whether Gboard stores and uses your typing to improve suggestions.

FAQs

Can I turn off the pill UI specifically?

Sometimes you can’t fully disable the new chip layout because it’s part of the keyboard’s suggestion rendering. What you can usually control is whether suggestions appear at all, plus correction behavior (auto-correct, spelling) and your language/dictionary choices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do my pills only show short words or weird phrases?

That typically points to a language mismatch or a typing context shift (for example, you switched from English to another language mode). Verify the active language on the keyboard and test by typing 1–2 sentences in the correct language.

Do pills affect autocorrect or just display predictions?

Pills are predictions, not the correction engine by themselves. Auto-correction determines whether Gboard rewrites what you typed, while the pills are the options you can tap.

Will changing settings take effect immediately?

Most settings changes apply instantly to the active keyboard session. If pills don’t change right away, switch to a different app and return, or restart the app where you’re typing.

Does using more than one language change how suggestions work?

Yes. Predictions are language-specific. If multiple languages are enabled, Gboard will offer suggestions based on the active language mode, which you select on the keyboard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom Line

Gboard suggestions becoming pill-shaped chips is mainly a UI update. The real control knobs are still in the simplified settings: text correction (especially auto-correction), suggestions toggles, and the active language/dictionary.

If your pills feel wrong, fix the basics first—confirm the correct language, then adjust auto-correction—and only then fine-tune suggestion behavior.
