There is no single best health-and-privacy preset for every Garmin Venu 3 owner. Keep the sensors that provide the sleep, stress, heart-rate or oxygen insights you want; then separately review what appears on the watch, what Garmin Connect uploads, who can see your activities and which apps can access your account data.

These are two different jobs: watch settings control sensing, alerts and access to the device, while Garmin Connect settings govern account visibility, data transfer and connected apps. The Venu 3 series owner’s manual is version 8, dated December 2025; some Connect labels can change, so check the current app or web interface if a menu name differs.

Which settings should you review first?

Start with the settings that match your priorities, rather than switching off every sensor or sharing feature. Turning off a measurement can also remove the insights and functions you bought the watch to use.

  • For a battery-first approach: use Pulse Ox On Demand unless you specifically want overnight measurements or all-day readings. Automatic pulse-ox tracking uses more battery.
  • For sleep and all-day wellness metrics: keep Wrist Heart Rate on. Turning it off also disables sleep tracking, all-day stress, wrist-based Pulse Ox and other calculations.
  • For fewer interruptions: tune smart notifications and health alerts individually, and set your normal sleep window correctly.
  • For account privacy: review activity visibility, device uploads and connected apps in Garmin Connect. A private activity setting does not stop data from being uploaded to Garmin.
  • For physical access protection: set a watch passcode if you want to restrict access when the watch is off your wrist.
  • For safety: decide whether incident detection is worth sharing your available location with emergency contacts during eligible outdoor activities.

The choices are independent: a passcode does not change Connect visibility, private activities do not stop uploads, and disabling uploads does not revoke third-party app access.

Which Pulse Ox tracking mode fits your needs?

Choose among On Demand, During Sleep and All Day in Settings > Watch Sensors > Pulse Oximeter > Tracking Mode. Garmin says that turning on pulse-ox tracking decreases battery life; the more continuous modes are for people who value those readings enough to accept that cost.

Mode When measurements occur Overnight breathing-variation insights Battery implication
On Demand When you request a measurement No automatic overnight readings for this feature Most battery-conscious of the three choices
During Sleep While you are asleep Available; this mode is needed for breathing variations Uses more battery than On Demand
All Day During sleep and while inactive during the day Available overnight Automatic tracking decreases battery life

Garmin describes these modes and the battery effect in its Venu 3 series Pulse Ox guidance. A low sleeping reading can sometimes result from an unusual sleeping position. Pulse Ox on the Venu 3 is not intended to diagnose or monitor a medical condition, so do not treat an isolated reading as a diagnosis.

Garmin’s stated smartwatch-mode battery life is up to 14 days for Venu 3 and up to 10 days for Venu 3S; actual battery life varies with feature use. Those are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee for a particular configuration or wearer.

Should you turn off wrist heart rate?

Usually not if you rely on the watch for sleep, stress or wrist-based oxygen data. In Settings > Watch Sensors > Wrist Heart Rate, Garmin documents Auto as the default; switching the sensor off has consequences beyond removing a heart-rate display.

Garmin’s Venu 3 series manual lists sleep tracking, all-day stress, wrist Pulse Ox and other calculations among the functions affected when wrist heart rate is disabled. A paired chest strap can provide heart-rate data during an activity, but it is not an equivalent all-day replacement for wrist sensing. If your goal is to reduce battery use, first review Pulse Ox mode and heart-rate broadcasting rather than assuming that turning off the wrist sensor is a small change.

Broadcasting heart rate to paired devices is a separate optional control and also decreases battery life. If you use a cycling computer or another receiver, check that setting separately from Wrist Heart Rate. Garmin’s Venu 3 series owner’s manual describes the relevant sensor controls.

Which health alerts are useful, and what do they mean?

Keep alerts that prompt a useful action and disable reminders that only distract you. Hold the watch’s B button, then open Settings > Notifications & Alerts > Health & Wellness to review heart-rate and wellness notifications.

High and low heart-rate alerts

High- and low-heart-rate alerts use thresholds you choose, and Garmin’s abnormal-heart-rate condition applies after at least 10 minutes of inactivity. The low alert does not fire during the sleep window selected on the watch. The 10-minute condition is Garmin’s operating rule, not a medical threshold or an indication that the watch continuously monitors for emergencies.

There is no universal beats-per-minute threshold to recommend. If personal medical circumstances make an alert threshold important, discuss the setting with a clinician. Garmin states that the feature is not intended to diagnose a heart condition; it is an alert feature, not medical surveillance. See Garmin’s heart-rate alert instructions.

Move, stress, rest and goal reminders

In the same Health & Wellness area, decide whether Move Alert, Stress Alerts, Rest Alerts, Daily Summary and goal reminders are worth receiving. These are not the same as heart-rate alerts: they are reminders and summaries you can tune to your routine. If an alert is mainly noise, changing that one notification is less disruptive than disabling Activity Tracking or a sensor used by several features.

How should you set your sleep hours and text notifications?

Set your usual sleep hours in Garmin Connect or the watch settings, then configure smart notifications separately. A correctly chosen sleep window helps the watch apply the low-heart-rate-alert exception to the hours you actually intend to sleep.

On the watch, open Settings > Notifications & Alerts > Smart Notifications. Review General Use, During Activity, During Sleep Do Not Disturb and the notification Privacy preference. These choices govern when notifications arrive and how they are presented; they do not change whether activity data is private in Garmin Connect.

For app-level choices, Garmin documents different paths by phone platform. On Android, use Garmin Connect > Settings > Notifications > App Notifications. On iPhone, Garmin directs users to iOS notification settings and says enabled iPhone notifications also appear on the watch. App labels may vary with software versions, so use the current phone settings if those exact names are not present.

Can you disable activity tracking without losing other features?

Yes, you can adjust Move IQ and Auto Activity Start independently in Settings > Activity Tracking. Disabling Activity Tracking entirely is a much broader change: it also stops recording steps, floors climbed, intensity minutes, sleep and Move IQ events.

Move IQ and Auto Activity Start

Move IQ identifies movement events, while Auto Activity Start can create timed walking or running activities. If your concern is that a particular automatic event is unwanted, review those controls individually before turning off Activity Tracking as a whole.

Timed activities are a separate kind of recording

Garmin says, “The watch records activity data only while the activity timer is running.” That statement refers to a manually started timed activity; it does not mean that continuous health tracking or Move IQ events stop whenever the timer is off. Keep that distinction in mind when deciding which recording behavior to change.

How do you protect information stored on the watch?

A passcode can restrict access after the Venu 3 leaves your wrist. Go to Settings > System > Passcode > Set Passcode to set the four-digit code. The watch uses the same code for Garmin Pay when applicable, so it is not a separate watch-only passcode.

Be careful when entering it: after three incorrect attempts, the watch temporarily locks. Garmin documents reset consequences after five incorrect attempts, with particular consequences for an unpaired watch. If you cannot remember the code, consult Garmin’s current owner’s-manual instructions before continuing attempts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Auto Lock is different. It controls accidental touches; it is not a substitute for the passcode’s off-wrist access protection. A passcode protects access to the device, but it does not decide what Garmin Connect stores or what connected services receive.

Are Garmin Connect activities private by default?

Garmin Connect’s privacy policy says, “Your activity data is set to private by default.” Still, review the actual settings instead of treating that starting point as a guarantee that every piece of information remains private: challenges, groups and other interactions can disclose information, and a displayed name and profile picture may remain visible.

In the app, open Settings > Profile & Privacy; on the web, look under Account Settings > Privacy Settings. Review profile visibility, new and past activities, and individual activities. Garmin support notes that activity or daily summaries can include heart rate and location, so consider the content of the data as well as the audience setting.

  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Transfer files and from your laptop at speeds up to 10 Gbps with USB A 3.2 port. Extra 2 USB A 2.0 ports are perfectly for your keyboards and mouse.

Keep the distinction clear: setting activities to private is an audience control. It does not stop the watch from uploading information to your Garmin account, and it is not a deletion request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do you stop new watch data from uploading?

Review Garmin Connect’s Device Upload setting if you want to stop new data from the Garmin device uploading. This setting is not a complete firewall or a way to delete information already in your account.

Garmin says manually entered data and data from third parties can still reach Connect when device uploads are stopped. Many Garmin Connect features also become limited or unavailable without uploads. Choose this only if that trade-off fits your goal; for a narrower privacy change, adjust activity visibility or a connected app instead.

How do you remove access for connected apps?

Inspect Connected Apps or account access in Garmin Connect and revoke services you no longer use. Garmin lists health metrics, sleep, heart rate, stress, activity performance and location among categories that may be shared with authorized third parties.

Revoking a connection limits future access through that authorization; it does not by itself configure or erase data already held by the destination service. Review the other app’s privacy and deletion controls separately if you want to manage its copy of your information.

Should you turn off incident detection for privacy?

Not automatically: incident detection can share location for safety, so the decision depends on whether that benefit matters more to you than the location disclosure. Garmin allows it to be configured by activity under Settings > Safety & Tracking > Incident Detection.

The feature is available only for certain outdoor activities and requires emergency contacts, a connected phone and network service. Garmin says emergency contacts may receive your name and available GPS location after a 15-second cancellation window. It does not automatically call emergency services, and Garmin describes the feature as supplemental rather than a replacement for emergency services. See Garmin’s incident detection instructions.

What should you do before selling or giving away the watch?

Use Settings > System > Reset > Delete Data and Reset Settings to remove entered information and activity history from the watch. Do not confuse it with Reset Default Settings, which retains activity history and downloaded content.

Resetting the watch concerns what is stored on the device. It does not establish that data already uploaded to a Garmin account has been deleted; manage account-held information separately through Garmin’s account and privacy controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do you choose without disabling more than you intend?

Before changing a setting, identify whether your concern is sensing, display, sharing, upload or physical access. Then consider what functionality the change removes and whether a narrower control addresses the concern.

  • Want fewer automatic oxygen readings? Change Pulse Ox Tracking Mode rather than turning off wrist heart rate if you still want sleep or stress data.
  • Want fewer messages on the watch? Adjust Smart Notifications and phone app-notification permissions rather than changing account activity visibility.
  • Want to limit who sees workouts? Review profile and activity audiences in Connect; do not assume that stopping uploads is necessary.
  • Want to restrict an outside service? Revoke its Connected Apps access and review the service’s own data controls.
  • Want the watch secured when removed? Set a passcode; Auto Lock alone addresses accidental touches.
  • Want to minimize location sharing? Review incident detection activity by activity, weighing the contact-notification benefit against sharing available GPS location.

Garmin’s Venu 3 manual and its Connect account controls address different layers. Make each change for the specific outcome you want, then check that the related feature still behaves as you expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Garmin Connect show my name if I make an activity private?

It may: Garmin’s privacy guidance says a displayed name and profile picture can remain visible even when activity data is private. Check profile visibility separately from the audience setting on an individual workout.

Can I use the Venu 3 passcode without changing Garmin Pay?

The watch uses the same four-digit code for Garmin Pay when applicable, rather than a separate code for each. If you use Garmin Pay, account for that shared code when setting or changing the watch passcode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a Venu 3S band fit the Venu 3?

Garmin specifies 22 mm quick-release bands for Venu 3 and 18 mm quick-release bands for Venu 3S. They are different widths, so check the watch model before ordering a replacement band.

Does the Venu 3 alert emergency services when incident detection triggers?

Garmin describes incident detection as notifying emergency contacts, not automatically calling emergency services. It is a supplemental safety feature and depends on phone connectivity and network service.
