Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is the closest game to Ghost of Yōtei on PS5. It shares the Japanese setting, open countryside, katana combat, archery and stealth, while adding the Iki Island expansion. If you want a more demanding action-RPG with branching choices, choose Rise of the Ronin. Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the better fit for switching between a samurai and a shinobi. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Nioh 2 Remastered are excellent combat-first alternatives, but neither should be treated as an equivalent expansive open-world replacement. Ghost of Yōtei itself is a standalone story rather than a continuation you must understand through Tsushima first.

Which game is most like Ghost of Yōtei?
Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is the documented closest match. Both are open-world Japanese action adventures built around swordplay, stealth, archery and travel through rural landscapes. The Director’s Cut also includes the Iki Island expansion, giving you a substantial additional region and story rather than only the original campaign. See the official Ghost of Tsushima product page for the PS5 edition and included content.

PlayStation describes Ghost of Yōtei as a standalone later-set story and states: “From a story perspective, Ghost of Yōtei is not a direct sequel to Ghost of Tsushima.” You therefore do not need Tsushima to follow Yōtei, but Tsushima remains the most natural choice if what you want is the same blend of cinematic Japanese landscapes, duels, infiltration and optional exploration. The games are related by style and setting rather than by a required continuous plot. Details about Yōtei’s positioning are on its official PlayStation page.
What should I play after Ghost of Yōtei if I want a different emphasis?
The right substitute depends on which part of Yōtei appeals to you. Use the following order when deciding: Tsushima for the nearest overall structure, Rise of the Ronin for systems and choice, Shadows for two distinct protagonists, Sekiro for precise duels, and Nioh 2 for demanding build-focused combat.

1. Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut — closest overall alternative
Tsushima is the safest recommendation for a player who wants an open world that consistently supports several approaches. You can meet enemies directly with the katana, thin groups with the bow, or use stealth to avoid a fair fight. Exploration is part of the core rhythm: roads, settlements and natural landmarks pull you away from the main path without turning the game into a purely mission-based action title.
The Director’s Cut matters because it combines the PS5 version with Iki Island. That expansion changes the scale of the package and adds a separate setting to explore after the main story reaches the appropriate point. It is still one coherent samurai adventure, not a collection of disconnected challenge stages.
Choose Tsushima when you want:
- A large Japanese landscape rather than a sequence of isolated arenas.
- Katana fights that can be approached openly or preceded by stealth.
- Archery as a genuine alternative to close combat.
- An additional Iki Island campaign included in the Director’s Cut.
- The most direct stylistic bridge to Ghost of Yōtei without needing Yōtei’s story first.
Disc note: A physical PS5 purchase requires a PS5 with a disc drive. PlayStation specifically warns that a disc-free PS5 cannot use PS4 discs for the Tsushima upgrade path. If you are shopping for a physical copy, search for the “Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut PS5 disc” edition and check that your console accepts Blu-ray discs before buying.
2. Rise of the Ronin — best for action-RPG systems and choice
Rise of the Ronin moves the setting to 19th-century Japan, so its historical atmosphere differs sharply from Yōtei’s earlier samurai world. Its strongest reason to choose it is mechanical variety: multiple weapon types, period firearms and branching decisions make it feel more like an action RPG than a focused samurai film.
Those decisions are not cosmetic dialogue options. The game presents a period of political upheaval in which alliances and actions can change the route through the story. That structure suits players who want to replay missions, reconsider choices and experiment with different equipment rather than follow one tightly authored path.
The combat emphasis also changes the learning curve. You are managing weapon categories, defensive timing and character development while dealing with enemies who punish predictable attacks. The result is less about reproducing one ideal duel and more about building a toolkit that matches your preferred distance and tempo.

Choose Rise of the Ronin when you want:
- An open-world Japanese setting in the 19th century rather than a medieval-style island.
- Branching decisions that give the campaign more than one route through its conflicts.
- Several melee weapons plus firearms from the period.
- More visible RPG progression and equipment experimentation.
- A native PS5 release rather than a PS4 title played through compatibility.
PlayStation’s US page listed a trial when checked, and the game appeared in the US PlayStation Plus Extra catalog at that time. Catalogs and trials can change by region and date, so verify the current listing in your own PlayStation Store before treating access as a continuing benefit.
3. Assassin’s Creed Shadows — best for two contrasting play styles
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the pick for players who want the same broad feudal-Japan appeal but do not want every mission to be solved by one kind of warrior. Its two protagonists are built around different approaches: Yasuke brings samurai strength and direct confrontation, while Naoe brings shinobi stealth, mobility and infiltration.
PlayStation summarizes the central choice plainly: “You decide whether to play as a shinobi or samurai.” That does not mean both characters have interchangeable move sets. Their contrasting capabilities are the point, and switching between them changes how you read guards, sight lines and objectives.
Exploration is another reason to select Shadows. The open world is designed around scouting, discovering routes and deciding whether to attack a target openly or create an opportunity from concealment. It is a better fit than Tsushima if your priority is comparing two distinct toolkits inside one campaign.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose Shadows when you want:
- A feudal-Japan open world on a native PS5 release.
- A samurai protagonist for forceful encounters.
- A shinobi protagonist for stealth, positioning and infiltration.
- Frequent decisions about which character best suits an objective.
- Exploration that rewards scouting before committing to combat.
It is not the closest one-to-one replacement for Tsushima’s single-hero arc. Its value is the deliberate contrast between Yasuke and Naoe, so players who prefer one consistent combat identity may find Tsushima more cohesive.
4. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice — best for precision sword fights
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice belongs on this list with an important qualification: PlayStation lists it as a PS4 title, not a native PS5 open-world release. It offers an interconnected world, stealth and sword combat, but its design is much more combat-focused than the broad roaming structure associated with Ghost of Yōtei.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

The defining skill is posture control. Attacks, blocks and perfectly timed deflections are used to break an opponent’s stance, making fights a test of rhythm and nerve rather than a search for a high-damage build. Stealth and vertical movement let you reduce pressure before a duel, yet major encounters still demand precise execution.
Choose Sekiro when you want:
- Hard, timing-heavy sword duels.
- Stealth routes that let you set up encounters.
- An interconnected world whose shortcuts matter more than a huge checklist of activities.
- A focused challenge rather than a relaxed sightseeing adventure.
Do not buy it expecting the same breadth of optional countryside activities or a native PS5 presentation. It is an adjacent combat recommendation for players whose favorite part of Yōtei is the tension of a one-on-one blade fight.

5. Nioh 2 Remastered — best for build depth and yokai battles
Nioh 2 Remastered is another combat-first choice. Its samurai foundation is combined with supernatural yokai enemies, mission-based progression and extensive equipment and skill systems. The PS5 remaster makes it a current-console option, but its structure is not an equivalent open-world journey.
Instead of spending most of your time crossing one continuous landscape, you select missions, learn enemy patterns and refine a character build. Weapon stances, skills, loot and yokai abilities create a large number of tactical combinations. That depth rewards players who enjoy comparing gear and practicing encounters repeatedly.
Choose Nioh 2 Remastered when you want:
- Demanding melee combat with several weapon approaches.
- Build customization and plentiful equipment decisions.
- Samurai themes mixed with supernatural yokai threats.
- A mission-based loop that supports repetition and mastery.
Choose something else if your priority is a seamless open world, a quiet travel rhythm or a historically grounded story. Nioh 2 earns its place through combat systems, not through matching Yōtei’s geography or narrative format.
How do these games differ in exploration, stealth and combat?

| Game | World structure | Stealth role | Combat identity | Historical or fantasy setting |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut | Broad open-world regions with optional activities and Iki Island | One of several complete approaches to camps and missions | Katana duels, archery and tools with accessible difficulty options | Historical-inspired Japan |
| Rise of the Ronin | Open-world 19th-century Japan | Useful alternative to direct attacks, alongside broader RPG systems | Multiple weapons, firearms, progression and branching choices | Historical 19th-century Japan |
| Assassin’s Creed Shadows | Feudal-Japan open world | Core identity of Naoe’s shinobi play | Yasuke’s samurai force versus Naoe’s stealth toolkit | Historical-inspired feudal Japan |
| Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice | Interconnected areas rather than a comparable checklist-driven open world | Positioning and enemy reduction before set-piece fights | Deflection, posture breaks and demanding duels | Historical-inspired Japan with supernatural elements |
| Nioh 2 Remastered | Mission-based selection rather than one continuous open world | Secondary to combat and encounter mastery | Stances, loot, skills and yokai abilities | Samurai-era fantasy with yokai |
The practical distinction is simple: Tsushima, Ronin and Shadows are the open-world substitutes; Sekiro and Nioh 2 are the specialist choices for players who value combat depth over geographic scale.
Which games are native PS5 releases?
Console labeling matters if you expect current-generation performance, a PS5 disc or a version designed specifically for the system. Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, Rise of the Ronin, Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Nioh 2 Remastered have PS5 versions. PlayStation’s official Sekiro listing identifies it as a PS4 title.
A PS5 with a disc drive can play compatible PS4 game discs. A disc-free PS5 cannot accept a physical disc, including a PS4 disc used for an upgrade path. Digital ownership and physical ownership are therefore separate purchasing decisions, not interchangeable versions.
Can I access these games through PlayStation subscriptions or trials?
Availability is temporary and region-specific. When checked in October 2026, PlayStation’s US pages showed Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut and Rise of the Ronin in the US PlayStation Plus Extra catalog, and the Rise of the Ronin page listed a trial. Those listings can be removed, moved between tiers or differ outside the United States.
For a reliable check, open the game’s current PlayStation Store page while signed into the account and region you will use. Confirm whether the page shows a purchase, download through your subscription tier or a time-limited trial. Do not assume that a catalog entry seen in one month or country remains available indefinitely.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I know about physical editions?
Physical editions can differ in the content they include, so read the edition name rather than relying on the game’s cover art. Ghost of Yōtei’s official page distinguishes a Blu-ray Standard Edition from a Complete Edition that lists additional story and survival-mode content. The physical Standard Edition should not be treated as containing every Complete Edition extra.

The same disc-drive rule applies when buying Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut on Blu-ray: a PS5 without a drive cannot use the disc. Check whether the listing is for the PS5 package or a PS4 edition with an upgrade route, and verify the conditions attached to that route on PlayStation’s current support or product page.
Why is Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty not in the main shortlist?
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is available on PS5 and is made by Team NINJA, but it does not satisfy the central setting requirement. Its official premise is fantasy Later Han and Three Kingdoms China, not Japan and samurai history. It can be a worthwhile adjacent action game for someone who wants fast martial-arts combat, but including it among direct Ghost of Yōtei alternatives would blur the distinction between gameplay style and setting.

Use this decision path instead of comparing every feature at once.
- Start with the world. If continuous exploration through a Japanese landscape is essential, choose Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, Rise of the Ronin or Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
- Decide whether you want one hero or two. Tsushima follows one central warrior’s path. Shadows is built around switching between a samurai and a shinobi.
- Set your combat tolerance. Sekiro demands precise deflections and punishes hesitation. Nioh 2 expects repeated practice plus equipment and stance management. Tsushima offers a broader range of approaches.
- Choose your era. Tsushima and Shadows evoke earlier feudal Japan; Ronin uses 19th-century Japan and includes firearms; Nioh 2 adds yokai fantasy; Sekiro combines historical inspiration with supernatural fiction.
- Check the console version. If native PS5 support is mandatory, select Tsushima Director’s Cut, Ronin, Shadows or Nioh 2 Remastered. Treat Sekiro as the PS4 combat option.
- Verify access before paying. Subscription catalogs, trials, edition contents and upgrade conditions can change. Check the current regional PlayStation Store listing and, for discs, confirm that your console has a drive.
How we picked these recommendations
The ranking uses the criteria that distinguish a genuine Ghost of Yōtei alternative from a merely similar action game: breadth of exploration, Japanese historical setting, balance of stealth and direct swordplay, combat and RPG emphasis, native PS5 status, physical-disc compatibility and the access information PlayStation currently lists. The first three games are open-world substitutes. Sekiro and Nioh 2 are deliberately labeled adjacent combat picks because their world structures do not match the open-world premise as closely.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to play Ghost of Tsushima before Ghost of Yōtei?
No. PlayStation describes Ghost of Yōtei as a standalone story, so understanding Tsushima is not a prerequisite. Playing Tsushima first is useful only if you want its earlier take on the setting, combat and exploration.
Which game has the hardest samurai combat on PS5?
Among the native PS5 options here, Nioh 2 Remastered is the combat-heavy choice because of its stances, loot and yokai encounters. Sekiro is also highly demanding, but its official listing is for PS4 rather than a native PS5 edition.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is Rise of the Ronin more like an RPG than Ghost of Tsushima?
Yes. Rise of the Ronin puts more emphasis on branching decisions, multiple weapons, firearms and character progression. Tsushima is more focused on a single authored journey through an open landscape.
Can a digital PS5 play a physical copy of Ghost of Tsushima?
No. A disc-free PS5 has no drive for Blu-ray game discs, including PS4 discs used for an upgrade route. You need a digital entitlement or a PS5 model with a disc drive for a physical copy.
Does Assassin’s Creed Shadows let you play only as a samurai?
No. Its campaign is designed around two protagonists: Yasuke’s samurai approach and Naoe’s shinobi approach. The attraction is choosing between their contrasting strengths rather than treating them as identical characters.
