If you want both Elden Ring’s demanding, learn-the-boss combat and the freedom to abandon a fight and explore, start with Nioh 3. It is the strongest 2026 match for open-field exploration, stance-driven combat and optional challenges. Mortal Shell II is the better compact-world choice, while Lords of the Fallen offers the most ambitious dual-realm exploration. If combat matters more than an open world, choose Dark Souls III, Sekiro or Lies of P. No alternative completely reproduces the Lands Between, so the right choice depends on which Elden Ring pillar you want to keep.

Why is Elden Ring so difficult to replace?
Elden Ring combines two design ideas that rarely coexist: the precise stamina-and-timing combat of a Souls game and a huge map that lets you leave a boss, find a new route, improve your character and return later. Bandai Namco Entertainment and FromSoftware describe it this way: “ELDEN RING is an action RPG title set in an authentic dark fantasy world. Players can enjoy a high level of freedom in exploring vast open areas and dungeons, uncovering secrets and facing formidable hardships to attain a deep sense of accomplishment.”

The scale explains the game’s continued reach. Bandai Namco Entertainment and FromSoftware reported over 30 million units shipped for Elden Ring as of March 2025. Shadow of the Erdtree surpassed 10 million units shipped worldwide by July 2025; it requires the base game and progress to a specified point. Typical editorial estimates put the main story at 50–70 hours and a heavily exploratory playthrough at 100 hours or more, according to Eneba’s October 2026 estimate.

Which open-world soulslike should you play first?
Choose among these if leaving a difficult encounter, discovering side paths and building a character are as important to you as boss fights.
Nioh 3 — the best 2026 open-field combat match
Nioh 3 is the clearest recommendation when you want a modern game that actually moves the Nioh formula into explorable spaces. It released on 6 February 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Windows. Instead of Nioh 2’s mission list, it uses four larger maps with points of interest, optional challenges, mini-bosses and hidden treasures. Online Expedition co-op works in those open fields.
The defining change is the ability to switch between Samurai and Ninja styles. Samurai emphasizes deliberate stance and weapon play; Ninja supplies a faster, more evasive approach. PlayStation Blog summarized the system as: “as the battles unfold, players will now be able to fight using two distinct combat styles: Samurai and Ninja.”
IGN scored Nioh 3 9/10 and called it “best-in-class combat,” praising “a fantastic split between Samurai and Ninja styles, as well as a triumphant move to an open-world structure.” IGN also wrote that “Nioh 3 stands out as the best of the trilogy.” The same review cautions that the open structure is not perfect, and PCGamesN judged its maps less carefully constructed than the Lands Between.
Expect faster combat and more loot management than in Elden Ring. Nioh 3 is for players who enjoy equipment farming, stance decisions and optional bosses more than a seamless, hand-shaped world. IGN reported more than 54,400 concurrent Steam players a few hours after launch; Wikipedia later summarized a launch-week peak of 88,045 and more than one million copies sold by 20 February 2026, figures that are less authoritative than a publisher sales release.
The PS5 Standard and SteelBook Launch editions were listed at $69.99 by Amazon, GameStop and Walmart in an IGN update on 29 January 2026. AndroidHire’s 21 September 2026 Steam snapshot showed $39.89, 43 percent below a $69.99 reference price; neither figure is a permanent price.

Mortal Shell II — the compact-world alternative
Mortal Shell II launched on 20 August 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series and Steam. Its map is deliberately smaller than Elden Ring’s, but it is still interconnected rather than a collection of missions. Playstack described it as “an immersive, interconnected open world, expansive yet deliberately compact, designed to unfold its twisted landscapes and hidden structures while respecting the player’s time.” More than 60 dungeons sit between landmarks.
Its combat deliberately breaks with Souls convention: stamina is absent. You instead exploit enemy posture, hardening and shell abilities to create critical-hit opportunities. That makes it a useful choice if you want Elden Ring’s curiosity and shortcuts without another enormous campaign or a stamina bar governing every exchange.
The digital edition was listed at $49.99, while the Devout Edition was $59.99 and included up to 72 hours of early access plus Obsidian skins for eight Shells. AndroidHire’s September 2026 snapshot also listed the standard Steam price at $49.99 and an OpenCritic average around 83, a secondary aggregation rather than a direct review score.

Lords of the Fallen — the ambitious dual-realm pick
Lords of the Fallen (2023) is the older choice for players who want a large connected world and a strong visual hook. Its Axiom and Umbral realms overlap: shifting between the living and dead versions of an area reveals routes, enemies and secrets. HostedGG called it the game that “reached for Elden Ring’s scale,” and EverythingEdinburgh identified it as one of the closest combinations of Souls combat and open exploration.
The Umbral/Axiom system is more than a visual filter. The lamp lets you scout across gaps, expose alternate paths and survive situations that would be impossible in Axiom. It gives exploration a puzzle layer that Elden Ring usually handles through verticality, keys and environmental clues.
A 2026 co-op update added shared progression under defined conditions, and Version 2.0 introduced a Free Friend’s Pass. That makes it one of the better campaign co-op options, although its realm mechanics can be harder to coordinate than a straightforward three-player dungeon. Eneba estimates a 25–35-hour average completion. A dated 28 October 2026 Amazon scrape listed a PS5 Standard Edition at $17.99, but retailer prices change.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 — choose it for freedom, not for Souls rules
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is not a soulslike. It belongs here because it may be the best answer if what you loved was setting your own route, stumbling into danger and climbing enormous creatures. Its open world is less densely packed than the Lands Between, but pawn companions, vocation choices and monster-climbing encounters create a different kind of emergent adventure.
EverythingEdinburgh called it the closest match for Elden Ring’s sense of freedom, while Mind Skills Arcade described it as the nearest equivalent with a party system. There are no bonfires, stamina-based dodge-roll duels or FromSoftware-style boss gates, so do not choose it expecting a direct combat substitute.

These games are better when your priority is boss design, weapon timing, parries or character builds rather than free-roaming geography.
Dark Souls III — the closest classic combat match
Dark Souls III is the most direct step from Elden Ring into FromSoftware’s earlier formula. It has stamina management, weapon scaling, shields, spells, status effects and demanding bosses, but its areas are arranged as a mostly linear sequence of interconnected zones. You lose the option to ride away from a wall, but you gain a concentrated run of encounters that established Elden Ring’s combat vocabulary.
GameSpot describes the trilogy as the series that crystallized the formula Elden Ring expanded. The original Dark Souls released in 2011, Dark Souls II in 2014 and Dark Souls III on 24 March 2016. EverythingEdinburgh calls Dark Souls III “the game Elden Ring’s combat grew out of.”
AndroidHire’s September 2026 Steam snapshot listed 278,102 recommendations and a $59.99 list price. If you buy it, the complete or Fire Fades edition is preferable because its downloadable-content areas contain some of the series’ most celebrated bosses. A 28 October 2026 Amazon scrape listed the PS4 Dark Souls Trilogy at $40.49.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice — the parry exam
Sekiro is not an open-world RPG and does not offer Elden Ring’s build experimentation. Its posture system rewards deflecting attacks in rhythm until an enemy can be finished with a deathblow. Stealth, grappling and platforming connect areas, but the protagonist has one prescribed fighting style and no summons to dilute a boss encounter.
That focus is why many players find Sekiro harder than Elden Ring. Elden Ring lets you respec, summon allies, use Spirit Ashes, change weapons or leave the area; Sekiro expects you to learn its deflect timing. It is the best choice when you want every boss to test your execution rather than your preparation.
GameSpot lists the release as 22 March 2019 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. AndroidHire’s 21 September 2026 snapshot showed 259,653 Steam recommendations and a $59.99 GOTY price. PCGamesN quoted reviewer Richard Scott-Jones saying, “It has been a privilege to play Sekiro.”
Lies of P — the best traditional non-FromSoftware soulslike
Lies of P, from Round8 Studio and NEOWIZ, released in September 2023 for PC, PlayStation and Xbox. It is a linear, authored journey through Belle Époque Krat, not an open world. Its combat combines aggressive movement, timed guarding, weapon assembly and Legion Arms, giving you more equipment experimentation than Sekiro but less route freedom than Elden Ring.

Bloodborne — aggressive gothic combat on PlayStation
Bloodborne remains the pick for fast, aggressive gothic action. Rally lets you recover recently lost health by attacking, while trick weapons transform between two forms and encourage close-range pressure. Yharnam’s Hunt setting and compact interconnected areas feel more oppressive than Elden Ring’s open countryside.
It released on 25 March 2015 for PlayStation 4 and remains PlayStation-bound in the available information. It runs on PS5 through backward compatibility, but the familiar 30-frames-per-second limitation remains. AndroidHire’s 2026 store snapshots ranged from $19.99 to $39.99; that variation reflects the store and week checked, not a fixed price. No announced PC version or remaster should be assumed.

Nioh 2 Complete — the deep loot option
Nioh 2 Complete uses mission-based structure rather than open fields, but its stance system, weapon types, Yokai abilities and enormous loot pool can occupy hundreds of build decisions. It is the better value if Nioh 3’s PS5/Windows availability or launch pricing is a problem and you mainly want technical combat.

AndroidHire listed Nioh 2 Complete at $19.99 in a 21 September 2026 Steam sale snapshot, 60 percent below a $49.99 reference price. The practical rule is simple: newcomers should buy Nioh 2 when it is discounted; players who have finished it should move to Nioh 3 for the open-field structure.
Demon’s Souls — the genre’s hub-based origin point
Demon’s Souls is the 2020 Bluepoint remake of the 2009 game that gave the genre its name. It is organized around a central hub and selectable areas, not an open world. Its PS5 exclusivity and older design make it a historical and atmospheric choice rather than a direct Elden Ring replacement.

Black Myth: Wukong
Black Myth: Wukong released on 20 August 2024 for PS5, Xbox Series and PC. It is a mostly linear action game inspired by Journey to the West, with versatile staff combat and Soulslike influence rather than a full Soulslike structure. PCGamesN called it a “GOTY contender of epic proportions” that “looks to iterate upon FromSoftware’s legacy rather than use it as a crutch.”

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers released on 24 July 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series and PC. PCGamesN ranked it highly and wrote that it “exceeds all expectations,” but the same coverage documented performance problems, a censorship patch and emergency post-launch updates from developer Leenzee. AndroidHire’s September 2026 Steam snapshot was mixed at about 57 percent and showed a $34.99 sale price, so treat it as a conditional recommendation rather than an automatic top pick.
The First Berserker: Khazan
The First Berserker: Khazan released on 27 March 2025 and focuses on parries, rage mechanics and demanding encounters. AndroidHire listed a $59.99 price and 21,092 Steam recommendations on 21 September 2026. It is a combat-first option for players who want a more concentrated action RPG, not an Elden Ring-scale world.
Remnant II
Remnant II is the unusual co-op shooter-soulslike. Procedural dungeons, ranged weapons and three-player play change the rhythm of learning a boss, but its build experimentation and repeated runs appeal to the same audience. GameSpot and HostedGG classify it as a PC-and-console shooter-soulslike; a gallery listing that mislabeled Nintendo Switch should not be used as a platform reference. AndroidHire’s September 2026 snapshot listed it at $49.99 with 46,246 Steam recommendations.

Ghost of Yōtei and Rise of the Ronin
Ghost of Yōtei is a PS5 open-world action-adventure set in 17th-century Ezo, released on 2 October 2025. Rise of the Ronin is Team Ninja’s PS5 open-world action game from 22 March 2024. Both are sensible if you want swordplay and exploration, but neither uses Soulslike bonfire progression, stamina duels or boss-run conventions.
Hollow Knight
Hollow Knight is a 2D Metroidvania with Soulslike difficulty, not an open-world Soulslike. It can satisfy the desire to explore a hostile interconnected map and recover from difficult deaths, but its platforming, map design and side-scrolling combat require a different skill set.

Is Elden Ring Nightreign Elden Ring 2?
No. Elden Ring Nightreign is a standalone co-op action-survival spin-off, not an open-world sequel or replacement for Elden Ring. It retains elements of Elden Ring while changing the structure to timed, session-based runs with selectable heroes and up to three players; single-player is also supported.
The publisher’s product card lists a 30 May 2025 release on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One through Smart Delivery and Steam. Bandai Namco Entertainment and FromSoftware reported over five million units shipped worldwide by July 2025. The standard digital edition was listed at $39.99, the Deluxe edition at $54.99 and the Collector’s Edition at $199.99 with an approximately 25-centimetre Wylder Nightfarer statue.
Buy Nightreign when you want repeatable co-op sessions and friends who will reliably join. Do not buy it expecting Torrent, a continuous map or the solitary route-finding that defines Elden Ring. AndroidHire’s dated snapshot showed 129,581 Steam recommendations and a $39.99 price; the publisher’s canonical release date is 30 May, although one contemporaneous scrape displayed 29 May.
How should you choose your next game?
Use this decision path to identify the feature you actually want to preserve.
- You want open fields and demanding combat: choose Nioh 3.
- You want a smaller map with unusual, stamina-free combat: choose Mortal Shell II.
- You want the biggest connected-world experiment outside Elden Ring: choose Lords of the Fallen.
- You want open-world freedom but a party and climbing monsters: choose Dragon’s Dogma 2.
- You want the closest classic FromSoftware combat: choose Dark Souls III.
- You want the hardest parry-focused exam: choose Sekiro.
- You want the strongest non-FromSoftware traditional soulslike: choose Lies of P.
- You want gothic aggression and own a PlayStation: choose Bloodborne.
- You want builds and loot farming: choose Nioh 3 or Nioh 2 Complete.
- You want three-player co-op: choose Nightreign for sessions, Lords of the Fallen for a campaign, Remnant II for shooting or Nioh 3 for Expedition play.
- You are new to FromSoftware games: start with Elden Ring itself, then Shadow of the Erdtree. If you have already finished it, Dark Souls III is a friendlier route into classic Souls than Sekiro.
What are the platform and budget limitations?
Platform availability eliminates several otherwise excellent choices. Bloodborne and the Demon’s Souls remake require PlayStation hardware. Nioh 3 launched on PS5 and Windows, not Xbox. Ghost of Yōtei is PS5-only. Mortal Shell II and Black Myth: Wukong target current-generation consoles and PC. Prices in the table are dated storefront or retailer snapshots checked in October 2026, not guaranteed live offers.
