Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is the closest overall match if you want both stealth and a historical world to explore: it combines an open-world journey across Tsushima with ambushes, bow use and katana combat, and its Director’s Cut includes Iki Island. If you want a newer standalone trip through historical Japan, consider Ghost of Yōtei. For a very different kind of stealth, Hitman World of Assassination offers target-focused missions, while Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun turns stealth into squad strategy.
These games are alternatives for different reasons, not interchangeable copies of Assassin’s Creed. The key questions are whether you want a continuous landscape or discrete missions, sword fighting or avoidance, and a historical setting or a story with supernatural elements. The recommendations below prioritize those differences and flag edition details that can affect what you buy.

Which games like Assassin’s Creed are the best fit?
Start with the kind of experience you want rather than treating “stealth” as one genre. Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is the strongest combined choice for open-world exploration and stealth. Ghost of Yōtei is another standalone historical-Japan adventure. The other picks narrow the focus: demanding sword combat in Sekiro, flexible assassination missions in Hitman, squad-based stealth in Shadow Tactics, or a story-led journey built around avoiding enemies in A Plague Tale: Requiem.
| Game | Best fit | World and stealth | Main departure from Assassin’s Creed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut | Stealth plus historical exploration | Open-world Tsushima; ambushes and direct combat | Centers on a samurai story and katana combat |
| Ghost of Yōtei | A newer standalone historical-Japan journey | Rural northern Japan; cover, silent takedowns and smoke bombs | Not a continuation of Jin’s story |
| Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice | Shinobi combat and high challenge | Interconnected areas; stealth, grappling and sword duels | More demanding combat and supernatural elements |
| Hitman World of Assassination | Flexible assassination missions | Detailed locations and target-focused missions | Not one continuous historical world |
| Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun | Planning stealth with a team | Discrete sandbox maps; coordinated character abilities | Strategy perspective rather than third-person traversal |
| A Plague Tale: Requiem | A dramatic, story-led stealth journey | Careful enemy avoidance during a linear-feeling adventure | Not an unrestricted open-world tour |
This is a fit guide based on the games’ described settings and mechanics, not a ranking from comparative playtesting. Official product descriptions are useful for confirming what a game includes, but they do not establish which title every player will enjoy most.

Is Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut the closest alternative?
Yes, if your ideal Assassin’s Creed experience is a large historical setting where you can explore between stealth encounters. PlayStation describes Ghost of Tsushima as an open-world adventure on Tsushima, with stealth tactics for ambushing enemies, bow use and katana combat. The Director’s Cut also includes Iki Island, which PlayStation identifies as a new story and location.
The combination matters. Some games on this list offer stealth but not a continuous landscape to roam; others have an expansive setting but put more emphasis on combat or story than on stealth. Tsushima brings discovery, stealth and open combat together. You can approach enemies by planning an ambush or confront them directly, so it is a better fit for someone who wants more than a pure stealth puzzle.

Its historical-Japan setting is also a useful distinction from many Assassin’s Creed entries. It is not an Assassin’s Creed game, and its story and combat identity are its own. Treat it as a neighboring experience rather than a substitute that reproduces the series’ specific characters, systems or historical periods.
Which Ghost of Tsushima edition should I look for?
For a physical PS5 purchase, PlayStation identifies a Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut PS5 Blu-ray edition. Check that the listing is the Director’s Cut if Iki Island is part of your reason for buying, and confirm the specific edition and region with the seller. Do not assume that a subscription listing, a digital version or another platform’s edition is the same product as a PS5 disc.
Disc compatibility is important: a PS5 without a disc drive cannot use a Blu-ray. PlayStation also explains that an owner using a PS4 disc must insert that disc to use the corresponding PS5 digital upgrade. A disc-free console cannot use that disc-based upgrade path. Verify your console model and the exact upgrade terms before buying a disc for an upgrade rather than for play on a compatible disc-drive console.

What does Ghost of Yōtei offer that Tsushima does not?
Ghost of Yōtei is a separate, standalone adventure set in 1600s rural northern Japan, around 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima. PlayStation describes stealth approaches involving cover, silent takedowns and smoke bombs. It is the newer choice if you want another historical-Japan journey, but do not buy it expecting a direct continuation of Jin’s story.
Its stealth details suggest a different set of encounter tools to consider: using cover, taking enemies down quietly or using smoke to change an engagement. Those mechanics make it relevant to a stealth-focused search, while the setting and exploration connect it to the historical-adventure side of the request. As with Tsushima, it also sits apart from the mission-based or strategy-map alternatives below.
Does the Ghost of Yōtei edition matter?
Yes. PlayStation lists a Standard Edition PS5 Blu-ray separately from a Complete Edition. The presence of a Complete Edition listing does not mean the Standard Edition disc includes everything in that other listing. Compare the edition names and the included content on the product page before placing an order.
If you are shopping for a physical copy, confirm that the listing is specifically the Standard Edition PS5 Blu-ray and that your console has a disc drive. Do not infer stock, current price or included extras from an old product description or a search result snippet; check the live listing at purchase time.
Is Sekiro a good choice if I want a stealth game?
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a good fit if stealth is part of what you want, but challenging sword combat is at least as important to its appeal. PlayStation describes stealth, a grappling hook and an interconnected world in a supernatural reimagining of historical Japan. It is better framed as a demanding action-adventure with stealth options than as a relaxed historical sightseeing game.

The grappling hook and interconnected areas offer movement and exploration, but the central contrast with Assassin’s Creed is the intensity of its sword duels. If you chiefly want to roam a historical landscape and choose between sneaking and open combat, Tsushima is the closer match. If you want a shinobi setting and are specifically looking for difficult, timing-focused fights, Sekiro is the more purposeful pick.
Its supernatural setting also changes the historical-exploration balance. The setting draws on historical Japan, but the official description presents it as a reimagining with supernatural elements, not a straightforward historical tour. Choose it for the blend of shinobi action and fantasy rather than for historical fidelity alone.
Is Hitman World of Assassination open-world like Assassin’s Creed?
No. Hitman World of Assassination is the choice for flexible target-focused missions and detailed locations, not for one connected historical world to traverse. Its stealth is about choosing an approach to a target within a location. That can appeal to players who like planning an assassination, but it is a different structure from exploring a broad historical landscape.
Edition labels matter here, too. PlayStation’s full World of Assassination listing describes campaigns from Hitman, Hitman 2 and Hitman 3, and lists 20+ locations and 1,000+ challenges. The separately listed Part One includes the first campaign and is described with 6 locations and 360 challenges. These are catalog descriptions, not sales figures or independent measurements, and catalog contents can change. If you want all three campaigns, do not assume that buying Part One gives you the full listed edition.
For this shortlist, the important distinction is the play rhythm: a mission gives you a contained space and a target rather than a continuous historical region. Pick it if replayable assassination approaches matter more than long-distance exploration, and check the exact edition name before purchase.

What makes Shadow Tactics different from third-person stealth?
Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun is a team-stealth strategy game set in the Shogunate era. Its sandbox maps, character abilities, traps and emphasis on avoidance make it the most tactical option here. Instead of following one hero through a broad world, you plan how several characters can work together within a level.
That perspective is a substantial departure from Assassin’s Creed traversal. It is better suited to someone who enjoys pausing to observe a map, coordinating actions and avoiding detection than someone looking for parkour and continuous third-person exploration. Its historical-Japan setting gives it thematic overlap with the Ghost games, but the way you interact with that setting is fundamentally different.
Choose it when the stealth problem itself is the attraction: how to move a team, use abilities and get through a guarded area without being seen. Choose Tsushima or Yōtei instead if you want a more direct action-adventure experience with a broader landscape.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is A Plague Tale: Requiem open-world?
No. A Plague Tale: Requiem is a story-led stealth adventure about Amicia and Hugo, with careful avoidance of enemies amid plague-and-rat threats. It is a recommendation for players who want stealth woven into a dramatic journey, not an unrestricted open-world historical tour.
That difference can make it a better fit if story and tension matter more than map freedom. It does not offer the same historical-world sightseeing premise as the Ghost games, and it should not be chosen on the assumption that it reproduces Assassin’s Creed exploration. Think of it as the narrative alternative in this list: a guided journey in which stealth helps drive the story.

Should you choose Assassin’s Creed Mirage instead?
Assassin’s Creed Mirage is a fallback for readers who want more Assassin’s Creed rather than a game outside the series. Ubisoft describes a Baghdad setting with districts, parkour, contracts, clue-gathering and stealth assassinations. Its official page also describes the Valley of Memory update, so consult the current official listing for the content and edition available where you play.
It belongs in a separate category from the alternatives above: it shares the franchise’s identity, while the other recommendations offer different approaches to historical settings or stealth. If your main reason for searching is that you want the series’ familiar style in a different installment, Mirage is the relevant choice. If you want to see how other games handle stealth, exploration or assassination, use the distinctions in the table instead.
How should you choose between these games?
Use the world structure and stealth style as your first filters. A game can involve sneaking without offering the exploration, combat or historical setting you are looking for.
- Choose Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut for the best balance of open-world historical exploration, stealth ambushes and sword combat.
- Choose Ghost of Yōtei for a standalone journey in 1600s northern Japan with cover-based stealth tools.
- Choose Sekiro if you want stealth alongside difficult shinobi combat and supernatural elements.
- Choose Hitman World of Assassination if you prefer self-contained assassination missions and flexible approaches to targets.
- Choose Shadow Tactics if you want deliberate, squad-based stealth puzzles in historical Japan.
- Choose A Plague Tale: Requiem if a dramatic story and avoiding enemies matter more than open-world freedom.
- Choose Assassin’s Creed Mirage only if you want an in-series option rather than an outside alternative.
Then check the edition and platform. The product name alone is not always enough: a standard edition may differ from a complete one, and a partial game listing may not include every campaign. For the verified physical products in this guide, PlayStation identifies a PS5 Blu-ray for Tsushima Director’s Cut and a Standard Edition PS5 Blu-ray for Yōtei. Match the disc to a console with a disc drive, and check the live listing for current availability and included content. No static price or retailer stock claim belongs here because those details can change.
There is no single best choice for every Assassin’s Creed fan. If both stealth and historical exploration are essential, start with Tsushima. If one of those elements matters more—mission design, hard combat, tactical planning or story—the alternatives become more compelling for that specific reason.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you need to play Ghost of Tsushima before Ghost of Yōtei?
No earlier game is required to understand Ghost of Yōtei; PlayStation describes it as a standalone adventure. Its setting is roughly 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima, rather than a continuation of Jin’s personal story.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAre these games historically accurate?
The official descriptions support their settings and broad premises, but they do not establish that each game is a historically exact reconstruction. In particular, PlayStation describes Sekiro as a supernatural reimagining, so treat historical atmosphere and historical accuracy as different things.
Can I play a PS5 Blu-ray on a digital-only PS5?
No. A digital-only PS5 has no disc drive for Blu-ray games. Check the console model before buying any physical edition, and do not assume a digital upgrade offer makes a disc usable on a disc-free console.
