A game marketing campaign worked only if it moved the outcome it was designed to move at an acceptable cost. For a pre-launch game, that may be incremental qualified interest; for a launch, players who reach a meaningful action; for monetization, revenue or contribution from the acquired cohort. The strongest scorecard names one primary outcome, reports its cost, and checks downstream player quality. Keep attributed results (credit assigned by a platform) separate from incremental results (outcomes that would not have happened without advertising). Google’s media-effectiveness guidance similarly says to choose the KPI that best represents the campaign objective.

What KPI proves a game campaign worked?
No single number proves success for every game. The proof is a chain: a clearly stated objective, a matching primary KPI, a cost or payback limit, and evidence that acquired players behave or monetize as expected. An install count can show delivery; it cannot by itself show profitable demand. A low CPI can coexist with weak retention, little playtime and no revenue.

Use an incremental result whenever the decision is whether advertising created additional outcomes. Attribution systems allocate credit according to their own rules. A lift study compares an exposed group with a credible control and estimates incremental conversions or incremental return on ad spend (ROAS). Google distinguishes ordinary ROAS and attribution reporting from incremental conversions and incremental ROAS in conversion-lift work (Google’s media-effectiveness guide).
How does the campaign objective determine the KPI?
Start by writing the decision the campaign must support. Google’s game-launch guidance separates early installs, deeper post-install actions and revenue-oriented optimization; those stages need different success measures.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Pre-launch demand: Measure incremental qualified interest where possible. If a lift design is unavailable, use campaign-linked wishlist additions and cost per eligible wishlist, then follow those wishlists into post-release purchases.
- Launch acquisition: Make a meaningful early action the primary event when the game requires tutorial completion, first match, level progress or another signal stronger than a download. Report installs and CPI as acquisition diagnostics.
- Monetization or re-engagement: Use cohort revenue relative to campaign cost over a named horizon, such as D7 or D30 ROAS, alongside retention and payer or ad-monetization behavior.
- Awareness: Use a measured lift in awareness or consideration if that is the intended outcome. Reach, impressions and video completion describe delivery; they do not automatically demonstrate sales.
Write the primary KPI, target, observation window and denominator before launch. Otherwise teams can declare victory by switching from a missed revenue target to a cheaper but less valuable event.
Are installs and CPI enough?
No. CPI is campaign spend divided by installs credited under a stated reporting definition. It is an efficiency ratio, not a profit measure. A cheap install is useful only when the resulting cohort returns, performs meaningful game actions and monetizes at a rate compatible with the game’s economics.

- Retention: D1, D7 and D30 retention, defined as the share of the install cohort active on each specified day. Document whether the platform counts a session, launch or another activity event.
- Progression: tutorial completion, first match, level milestone or another action that predicts continued play for this game.
- Monetization: payer conversion, purchase revenue, advertising revenue and subscriptions where applicable.
- Cohort LTV: revenue accumulated by the cohort over a stated period. Google AdMob’s cohort reporting can separate total, in-app-purchase, advertising and subscription LTV and show retention with a Google Ads app-campaign dimension, but integrations and available dimensions must be confirmed for the specific game.
Unity’s definitions for CPI and day-based retention are useful for keeping terms consistent (Unity key concepts). Compare cohorts only when geography, platform, attribution rule, creative and observation age are reasonably comparable.
How should a game calculate ROAS?
ROAS at day n is cohort revenue observed through day n divided by the spend used to acquire that cohort:
ROAS D7 = revenue generated by the acquired cohort through day 7 ÷ campaign spend for that cohort
Label the window every time: D1, D7, D30 or another agreed horizon. State whether revenue is gross, net of store fees, estimated, refunded, or inclusive of advertising revenue. Apple’s analytics distinguishes reported sales from final proceeds, so those figures should not be mixed. ROAS is not net profit; refunds, platform fees, content costs, overhead and other operating expenses require separate accounting.

A result below 100% at D7 may rise as the cohort continues earning, but that does not guarantee eventual payback. Set the acceptable payback period from the game’s margin, monetization curve, budget and cash-flow needs rather than adopting a genre-wide ROAS threshold. Segment by country, platform and creative only when each segment has enough comparable data to avoid mistaking noise for a difference.
Which KPIs fit a Steam pre-launch campaign?
For a paid Steam pre-launch campaign, use incremental qualified interest as the ideal primary measure. Operationally, campaign-linked wishlist additions and cost per wishlist are useful proxies, provided you understand which visits and conversions Steam includes.
Steam’s UTM Analytics distinguishes Total Visits, Trusted Visits and Tracked Visits. Only eligible tracked visits can contribute to UTM wishlist, purchase or activation conversions. The UTM conversion window is 72 hours; dashboard visits update hourly, while conversions finalize after four days. A social-app browser journey may not connect to a later Steam action. Therefore, do not divide ad-platform clicks by Steam conversions without documenting these boundaries.
Track additions, deletions, territory and the eventual purchase behavior of the wishlist cohort. Valve explicitly warns: “Because everyone wishlists for different reasons, there’s no formula to accurately predict sales from wishlists.” Steam’s regional wishlist reporting is valuable for planning, but it is not a universal sales multiplier. See the Steam UTM Analytics documentation and Steam wishlist guidance.

Which KPIs fit a post-launch Steam campaign?
Use incremental purchases or net contribution as the proof measure when a valid lift design is available. Otherwise report Steam-attributed purchases, cost per purchase and revenue relative to spend, then reconcile those figures with the studio’s financial results.
Steam UTM reporting does not include in-game purchases, and a demo-only download does not count as a conversion on a base-game UTM link. Store traffic is therefore a diagnostic, not the outcome. Valve also says store-page traffic and store-page purchase conversion rate are not themselves factors in Steam store visibility; presenting them as an algorithm hack misleads decision-makers.

What should a mobile free-to-play launch scorecard contain?
Make the primary KPI the number of acquired players reaching a meaningful early action at an acceptable cost. Installs and CPI remain useful for diagnosing acquisition volume, but they should sit beside quality and monetization measures.
- Define the acquisition event and verify that an install means what you think it means.
- Report D1, D7 and D30 retention for the same cohort definition.
- Measure tutorial or level progress, first-session depth, payer conversion and ad engagement where instrumented.
- Publish cohort LTV and D7/D30 ROAS with revenue components identified.
- Break out country, platform and creative only where attribution and sample sizes are comparable.
Some distribution platforms cannot expose a direct purchase or download event. Gamesight documents a default game “Install” goal based on a first-play launch event in such cases. Inspect your own event definition before comparing a platform-reported download with a first launch.
How should awareness campaigns be judged?
Judge an awareness campaign by lift in the awareness or consideration outcome it was designed to change. If direct measurement is impossible, select a clearly labeled proxy and explain its limitation.
Reach, impressions, view-through rate and video completion are delivery or diagnostic metrics. They can reveal whether media was served and consumed, but none automatically establishes that more people will buy or play. A brand-lift survey, qualified search behavior or later organic demand can be useful only when the measurement design connects it to the stated objective.
What is the difference between attributed and incremental results?
Attributed results are conversions credited to a campaign under a platform’s attribution window, click or view rules. Incremental results estimate the additional conversions caused by advertising compared with what would have happened without it.
Use attribution for operational optimization and channel reporting, but do not call it causal proof. A holdout, geo experiment or conversion-lift design is stronger evidence. Keep the two columns separate in every dashboard: “attributed purchases” and “incremental purchases,” for example. The same distinction applies to ROAS: attributed ROAS can look healthy even when most credited players would have arrived organically.

What should be in a practical game marketing dashboard?
A useful dashboard is a compact decision record, not a wall of platform exports. Include:
- campaign objective, primary KPI and target;
- spend, currency and date range;
- tagged traffic and the exact conversion event;
- the denominator and formula for CPI, cost per wishlist or cost per qualified action;
- cohort size and D1/D7/D30 retention where relevant;
- purchase, advertising and subscription revenue components;
- day-specific ROAS and the observation cutoff;
- territory, platform, creative and channel dimensions;
- attributed-versus-incremental status;
- the data source’s caveats, eligibility rules and event definition.
Freeze a reporting snapshot when decisions are made. Cohort revenue and retention mature over time, and late conversions can change early readings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What commonly makes KPI conclusions wrong?
- Using a universal CPI or ROAS benchmark: no defensible genre-independent ceiling or guaranteed wishlist-to-sale rate follows from the available evidence.
- Mixing windows: comparing D7 revenue for one cohort with D30 revenue for another exaggerates the apparent difference.
- Mixing money definitions: gross bookings, store proceeds, net revenue and contribution are not interchangeable.
- Comparing unlike cohorts: country, platform, device, creative, launch phase and audience quality can change results materially.
- Calling traffic a result: clicks, impressions and store visits are upstream measures unless the objective is explicitly traffic.
- Ignoring deletion or cancellation: wishlist additions without deletions or later purchases can overstate demand.
- Assuming blank data means zero: Apple campaign reports appear only after a reporting threshold is met, and some usage reporting depends on user data-sharing consent.
- Trusting an event name: “install” may mean a first-play launch rather than a download, depending on the measurement setup.
How do you set a target without a universal benchmark?
Build the target backward from economics. Estimate the maximum acquisition cost that still permits the required payback period after platform fees, refunds and variable content costs. Then set an intermediate quality threshold—such as D7 retention or a meaningful early action—that must be met before scaling spend.
For pre-launch games, define the value of a qualified wishlist using your own historical purchase behavior only after release data exists; never promise a fixed multiplier. For free-to-play games, model expected cohort LTV by territory and platform, then leave a safety margin for estimation error. Revisit targets as cohorts mature, but record every target change so a moving goalpost is not mistaken for improvement.
What is the minimum evidence for a go or no-go decision?
At minimum, require a named objective, a costed primary outcome, a consistent cohort definition and a stated observation window. For a scaling decision, add retention or meaningful-action evidence and a monetization view appropriate to the game model. For a claim that advertising caused growth, require a credible incrementality design rather than attribution alone.
The practical verdict is simple: report one primary outcome KPI, its cost, and downstream player quality, while labeling attribution and incrementality separately. That combination proves whether the campaign advanced the business goal—not merely whether an ad platform recorded activity.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long should I wait before judging a game campaign?
Use the observation window tied to the decision: early-action campaigns may be read quickly, while retention and revenue require D7, D30 or another declared cohort horizon. Do not compare a still-maturing cohort with one whose full window has elapsed.
Why do my ad platform conversions not match Steam conversions?
The systems use different eligibility and attribution rules. Steam counts only eligible tracked visits within its 72-hour UTM window, and some browser journeys cannot be connected to later store actions, so a click-to-conversion ratio across platforms is not automatically comparable.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can a campaign have good ROAS but still lose money?
Yes. ROAS may use gross or estimated revenue and omit store fees, refunds, production costs and overhead. Calculate contribution or profit separately and state whether the reported revenue is gross, proceeds or net.
Why is an Apple campaign report empty when downloads occurred?
Apple only displays individual campaign metrics after its reporting threshold is met, and some usage data depends on user consent to share information. A blank or thin campaign breakdown therefore does not necessarily mean the campaign produced no activity.
Should I optimize for the cheapest install or the highest-retaining cohort?
Optimize for the lowest cost that still meets your meaningful-action, retention and payback requirements. A higher CPI can be economically better when that cohort reaches more game milestones and produces greater LTV.
