A stretch goal is an extra campaign milestone, not a guarantee that every backer receives the item it unlocks. Whether you get it depends on the campaign’s wording, your reward tier and any add-on terms. Refunds after payment usually depend first on the creator’s published policy; a chargeback is a separate dispute with your card issuer, not an automatic refund. The right next step depends on whether your pledge has actually been charged, which payment mode the campaign used and what the creator promised.
What is the difference between a funding goal, a stretch goal, a reward tier and an add-on?
These terms answer different questions. A funding goal is the campaign’s threshold for success. A stretch goal is an additional milestone the creator may set after or alongside that threshold. A reward tier describes what you pledge for, while an add-on is an additional item or option that may require a separate payment.

Gamefound says creators can set automatic stretch goals triggered by the number of backers, funds collected or the campaign day, as well as goals that require the creator to unlock them manually. The platform also lists stretch goals in both its regular and Express campaign formats; seeing a stretch goal does not tell you how or when payment is collected.
To work out what you are actually due, read the goal description together with the reward tier, add-on terms, campaign updates and your order record. A campaign might unlock an item for the project without promising that it is included in every tier, or it might make an unlocked item available only through a particular pledge or paid add-on. Do not assume that “unlocked” means “free,” “included in my tier” or “guaranteed to ship.”

Backers are helping finance production rather than buying a game that is already manufactured and ready to ship. Kickstarter advises prospective backers to review the creator’s record, project risks, updates and comments, and explains that delivery may follow production rather than the campaign’s end. Its guidance is available in Kickstarter’s guide to backing a project.
When is a game-campaign pledge charged?
First check whether a charge actually happened. In ordinary all-or-nothing campaigns, payment is generally collected if the campaign reaches its funding goal; instant-payment options, Express campaigns and later pledge-manager payments can work differently.

Ordinary all-or-nothing campaigns
Kickstarter describes its usual flow as collecting pledges after a successful campaign. Gamefound and Indiegogo also describe successful-campaign collection for their ordinary flows, subject to instant-payment exceptions. If an ordinary campaign fails, the pledge is generally not collected. That is different from asking for money back after a successful campaign has already charged you.
Instant payment and late pledges
An instant-payment option can charge before the usual end-of-campaign collection point. Gamefound says a backer who paid instantly can ask the creator to cancel while a regular campaign is live, and that an instant payment is refunded if the campaign fails. Late pledges and pledge-manager payments are charged upfront and may follow project-specific cancellation terms. Check the actual receipt and project settings rather than assuming a pledge made after the campaign follows the same timetable as an ordinary live pledge.

Gamefound Express
Express is not an ordinary all-or-nothing campaign: it has no required funding goal, collects payment and shipping at checkout, and does not offer backer-side order cancellation. Gamefound says refunds remain with the creator under the relevant policy. Its Express Crowdfunding guide compares this format with ordinary crowdfunding. Do not use the “no charge if the goal fails” rule of thumb for an Express checkout.
Can I cancel a pledge after a game campaign ends?
There is no single answer for every campaign. A backer may have cancellation options while a campaign is live, but after money has been collected the request is usually a refund request governed by the creator’s terms, the payment mode and the project’s stage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBefore collection, look for a backer-facing cancellation control and confirm whether your payment method was charged. After collection, contact the creator and cite the applicable campaign policy. Kickstarter’s indexed official terms say Kickstarter itself does not offer refunds; that does not establish whether a particular creator will refund a particular pledge, and platform terms can change. Read the current terms and campaign page for your project.
Payment through a later pledge manager may have separate cancellation rules from the original campaign. The key documents are the terms in force when you placed that order, the pledge-manager order record, and any creator updates that explain deadlines or restrictions. A platform’s general payment flow does not replace the project-specific terms.

How do I ask for a refund after payment?
Start with the creator, not a presumption that the platform will reimburse you. State which order you mean, what the campaign promised, what changed or was not provided, and the remedy you are requesting. Keep the request and response in writing.
- Confirm the charge and order. Check your card or payment statement, receipt, reward tier, add-ons and any pledge-manager order. If no charge occurred, there may be no paid pledge to refund.
- Find the terms that apply. Review the campaign page, refund policy, updates and relevant order terms. Note any stated deadline, deductions, shipping or fulfillment condition, and whether the order has entered packing or shipment.
- Send a specific request to the creator. Identify the promised reward or item and explain whether it is missing, materially changed or no longer wanted. Ask for a full or partial refund, as appropriate, and request a written answer.
- Keep the record. Save the page or dated screenshots, updates, receipt, order details and communications. These records help explain the dispute to the creator or, if necessary, your card issuer.
Gamefound documents creator-operated processes for full order cancellations and partial-item refunds. Its processing guide also describes manual transfers and a possible fee deduction for pledges imported from Kickstarter or another platform. That describes how a tool can be used; it is not a universal legal right for every creator to deduct fees. A creator’s own policy may distinguish between payment platforms, how much time has passed, and whether an order is being packed. For example, CMON publishes separate policies for some Kickstarter and Gamefound campaigns; those terms apply to the relevant CMON projects, not to crowdfunding projects generally.
Does higher shipping qualify for a Gamefound refund?
Only in a limited case under Gamefound’s optional Stable Pledge program. For a participating creator, if a declared product price or general shipping estimate rises by more than 10% after the campaign, an affected backer may request a full, creator-funded refund within two weeks of the creator’s announcement. The backer must contact the creator directly. This is a program-specific trigger, not a general rule for all campaigns: a rise of 10% or less, an ordinary delay or a project that has not joined the program does not meet the stated condition. See Gamefound’s Stable Pledge explanation, updated in July 2026.
Can I charge back a board game that never shipped?
You can ask your card issuer to review a transaction, but a chargeback is not guaranteed and does not turn every delay into a successful dispute. The issuer assesses the claim under its process; explain accurately what was ordered, what was promised and what has or has not happened.

For a US credit-card backer, the federal billing-error process described by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau generally requires written notice within 60 calendar days after the first statement displaying the charge. That clock is tied to the statement, not to the game’s estimated delivery date. A production schedule that runs for months or years can therefore mean that the cited notice period has passed before a missed delivery date makes the problem apparent. The CFPB explains the notice process in its credit-card billing-dispute guidance.
- Save the evidence. Keep the campaign’s promised tier and stretch-goal wording, dated updates, original and revised delivery estimates, pledge-manager record, receipts, card statements and creator communications. The FTC advises consumers to retain records of promises, shipping and messages.
- Ask the creator for a remedy promptly. Describe the specific item or service that was not provided as agreed, ask for a response and retain it. A creator’s reply, or lack of one, can be part of the record you provide to the issuer.
- Contact the issuer using the statement’s details. Call the number on the card or use the billing-dispute address shown on the statement. Explain what you ordered and what was missing or not provided as agreed. A phone call or online form alone may not preserve the same federal statutory protection as written notice.
- For the cited federal credit-card process, send written notice on time. The CFPB describes sending it to the issuer’s billing-inquiries address within 60 calendar days after the first statement showing the charge. Keep a copy and proof of delivery.
- Describe the issue accurately and ask about the outcome. The FTC distinguishes non-delivery or non-acceptance from a disagreement about quality. Ask the issuer how its rules apply, whether it may extend its process for a delayed shipment, and what its decision means; a provisional reversal or submitted request is not a guaranteed final result.
The FTC notes that an issuer may sometimes extend a dispute window when shipment is delayed, but that is not assured. If a promised delivery date was far in the future, the federal notice period may have expired by the time non-delivery becomes clear. Ask the issuer about its options and provide dated evidence of the delivery promise and changes. Debit-card protections and procedures differ from the federal credit-card process described above. These points concern US consumer guidance; they are not universal law or a prediction about an individual issuer’s decision.
What does a campaign delay or missing reward establish?
A delay alone does not prove fraud or guarantee a refund. The more useful question is what the creator promised, what the project later communicated, what was delivered, and how the creator handled any promised remedy.
The FTC’s historical case involving the 2012 Doom board-game campaign illustrates why specific promises and follow-through matter. In its 2015 complaint, the FTC said the campaign raised $122,874 from 1,246 backers against an initial $35,000 goal; 1,067 backers, or 85%, pledged at least $75. The complaint concerned promises that included game copies and figurines, alleged diversion of funds, undelivered rewards and promised refunds that were not provided. The FTC later announced a settlement. Those figures and allegations concern one case, not a typical campaign or a rule that every delayed project is misconduct. The FTC complaint and its settlement announcement document that matter.

When deciding what to do, distinguish among a revised schedule with regular updates, a changed or removed reward, a missing item after other rewards ship, an unfulfilled refund promise, and a charge you did not authorize. Each describes a different problem. Do not describe an authorized pledge as fraudulent simply because production is late; tell the issuer what happened in plain, accurate terms.
What should I check before backing a game campaign?
A short review before pledging can prevent confusion about what is included and how hard it may be to cancel later. Focus on the specific offer and payment path rather than relying on the campaign’s headline or a stretch-goal graphic.
- Reward contents: Confirm the core game, stretch-goal items, tier-specific bonuses and paid add-ons separately.
- Production and delivery: Treat the estimated schedule as a forecast for a product that may still need production. Review the creator’s past projects, risks, updates and comments; Kickstarter recommends evaluating these before backing.
- Collection timing: Identify ordinary end-of-campaign collection, instant payment, Express checkout or a later pledge-manager charge.
- Cancellation and refunds: Find the applicable deadline, conditions, possible deductions and any packing or shipping restrictions.
- Shipping terms: Check whether the amount is a declared estimate, when it may be collected and whether a special program applies to a price or estimate increase.
- Recordkeeping: Save your receipt and the offer as it appeared when you pledged, especially if later updates revise delivery or reward details.
These checks do not eliminate production risk. They make it easier to distinguish a missed estimate from a change to the actual reward or a failure to follow a stated refund policy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a stretch goal mean I get the item automatically?
No. The campaign’s tier and add-on terms determine whether that item is included in your order. Save the version of the offer visible when you pledge, since later updates can help clarify what the creator said.
Does a 60-day dispute clock start when the game was supposed to arrive?
For the federal US credit-card billing-error notice period discussed here, it generally starts when the statement first shows the charge. Card issuers may have other processes, so ask yours about a delayed-shipment dispute even if that period has passed.
Can I dispute a pledge I did not authorize?
Contact the card issuer promptly and describe the transaction as unauthorized if that is what happened. That is different from disputing an authorized pledge because a campaign is late or a reward is disappointing.
