The most reliable Galaxy “custom launcher” setup starts with One UI Home, not a replacement app: use a restrained grid, remove shortcuts you do not need, group the rest into folders, and lock the layout. Choose Swipe gestures or Buttons in Settings > Display > Navigation bar based on how you use your phone. Treat battery life as a troubleshooting task—inspect Settings > Battery and manage background activity rather than expecting a launcher layout to add a guaranteed number of hours. Use the built-in One UI Home controls first. They cover the changes most people need—grid density, folders, pages, widgets, and layout locking—without adding another launcher process or creating a second set of settings.
Open Home screen settings
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
- Tap Settings. On some devices, the same controls are available from the device’s main Settings app under Home screen.
- Review the grid, lock-layout, and page-management options shown for your model.
Samsung’s Home screen controls let you add, move, and remove apps and widgets, create folders, manage extra Home screens, and lock the arrangement against accidental changes.

Remove anything that does not earn a place
Keep only shortcuts you use frequently enough to justify a one-tap position. Uninstall an app if you do not need it; otherwise, remove its Home screen shortcut while leaving the app in the app screen. This reduces visual noise without pretending that fewer icons alone produce a measurable battery gain.
Use folders by task, not by accident
Create folders for groups that you open together, such as Finance, Travel, or Editing. Give each folder a short, recognizable name and avoid nesting so deeply that finding an app takes longer than using search. Put the folder where your thumb naturally reaches rather than filling every open cell.

Keep widgets that replace a repeated trip into an app
A calendar agenda, weather panel, or media control can be useful when it shows information or an action you routinely need. Remove decorative or redundant widgets; a clean page is easier to scan when every element has a job.
Lock the finished arrangement
Enable the Home screen option that prevents changes to the layout. This stops accidental drags from moving icons or deleting widgets. Turn the lock off temporarily when you intentionally reorganize, then enable it again.
Which Home screen grid should I choose: 4×6 or 5×6?
On One UI 7, Samsung documents 4×6 and 5×6 choices. A 4×6 arrangement leaves larger visual gaps and can make a small set of shortcuts easier to target; 5×6 fits more icons on one page. That is a usability and appearance trade-off, not a Samsung battery-performance claim.

To change it, touch and hold an empty Home screen area, tap Settings, then open the grid or Home screen layout control. If your phone shows different dimensions—or no grid selector—use the options it provides; Samsung’s documented One UI 7 choices are not a universal promise for every Galaxy model or release.
How do I choose between Buttons and Swipe gestures?
Buttons are the safer choice if you want visible controls and consistent tap targets. Swipe gestures are preferable when you want navigation controls out of the way and are comfortable with edge and bottom swipes.
Set the navigation mode
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Tap Navigation bar.
- Choose Buttons or Swipe gestures. The exact labels can vary with One UI version.
How Samsung’s current gesture model works
For One UI 6.1 and later, Samsung describes three core actions:
- Back: swipe inward from either side edge.
- Home: swipe up from the bottom edge.
- Recents: swipe up from the bottom and hold briefly.
Practice the edge distance and hold timing in an app you know well. Cases with raised edges, screen protectors, or one-handed use can change how easily an edge swipe starts, so Buttons may be more dependable for some users.
When Buttons make more sense
- You regularly use Back and Recents under time pressure and prefer a visible target.
- Side swipes conflict with an app’s own edge drawer or back gesture.
- You are helping someone who finds gesture timing difficult.
When Swipe gestures make more sense
- You want the content area to feel less crowded by a permanent navigation bar.
- You already use edge swipes comfortably and rarely trigger an app’s side panel by mistake.
- You prefer one consistent motion for Home across full-screen apps.
What does NavStar add to Galaxy navigation?
NavStar is an optional Good Lock module for supported Galaxy configurations. Samsung’s UK guidance says it can expose additional choices such as Swipe from bottom and gesture hints, which can help people who prefer an older multi-zone swipe behavior or want an on-screen reminder.

Install and check NavStar
- Open Samsung’s Good Lock app if it is available on your device and in your region.
- Find and install the NavStar module.
- Open NavStar and review the navigation options it exposes.
- Enable only the gesture or hint behavior you understand, then return to Settings > Display > Navigation bar to confirm how the system presents it.
Menus can differ or the module may be unavailable on a particular model, carrier build, software release, or region. Do not assume that a setting shown in Samsung’s UK instructions will appear identically on every Galaxy phone or tablet.
How can Home Up customize One UI Home?
Home Up is another optional Good Lock module. Samsung describes DIY Home, additional layout controls, popup-folder styles, and restoration of a Home screen layout. The Galaxy Store listing showed Home Up version 17.5.00.30 dated 26 August 2026, but the version and availability you see can differ.
Use Home Up only when built-in controls stop short
For a straightforward clean page, One UI Home is sufficient. Consider Home Up when you need more control over spacing, folder presentation, or a repeatable layout you can restore after experimenting.
Check availability before planning around it
Good Lock modules are software features, not physical accessories. Samsung’s Good Lock overview and Home Up information make clear that support depends on the device and software combination. If Home Up or NavStar does not appear in Good Lock or the Galaxy Store, keep the built-in One UI arrangement rather than installing an unrelated launcher solely to reproduce one option.
How should I investigate battery drain?
There is no documented percentage or runtime gain from changing a Galaxy launcher grid or gesture style. Start with Samsung’s system battery tools, identify the apps consuming power, and limit background activity where doing so will not break notifications or syncing.

Check usage before changing the layout
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Review the usage details and identify apps or services with unexpectedly high activity.
- Compare the timing with a recent app installation, update, or change in your routine.
This separates a real background-activity problem from a preference about how the Home screen looks. A sparse page may feel calmer, but the battery screen—not the icon count—shows where the system reports consumption.
Use Background usage limits carefully
- From Settings > Battery, open Background usage limits (the wording can vary).
- Place rarely used apps in Sleeping apps when you want to reduce background activity while retaining some background function.
- Use Deep sleeping apps for apps you do not need running in the background. Samsung describes these apps as functioning only when you open them.
Do not deep-sleep an app that must deliver timely messages, alarms, location updates, authentication prompts, or other background events. If an important alert arrives late after a limit is applied, remove that app from the restrictive category and reassess its usage.
Check display and power-saving side effects
Samsung’s One UI 7 troubleshooting guidance recommends checking background apps and device settings when drain appears after an update. It also notes that power-saving features can change display behavior and motion smoothness. Review those settings before blaming the launcher or gestures, especially if animations or screen behavior changed at the same time as battery life.

I want the cleanest possible page
Choose the 4×6 grid if it is available, keep one primary page, use a few task-based folders, and remove nonessential widgets. Lock the layout after arranging it. Use Swipe gestures if you already know the edge and bottom motions; otherwise, Buttons keep the interface obvious.
I need many apps one tap away
Try the 5×6 grid on One UI 7, then group the remaining apps by task rather than creating several nearly identical pages. Buttons can make frequent switching easier to discover, while gestures reclaim space if you are comfortable with them.

I want older-style or more visible gesture behavior
Start with the standard Navigation bar menu. If your device supports Good Lock, inspect NavStar for “Swipe from bottom” and gesture-hint options. Keep the built-in mode if NavStar is unavailable or if an added gesture conflicts with an app’s edge controls.
