Full-Page Webpage Screenshots and PDFs: How to Automate Them

Use a browser automation tool when you need repeatable captures. Playwright is the broadest choice because one API covers Chromium, Firefox and WebKit; Puppeteer is a concise JavaScript option; Chrome Headless handles simple URL-to-file jobs from a shell; and Selenium’s Firefox driver provides documented full-document screenshots. Set the full-page option explicitly for an entire scrollable page. Choose a PDF when the result must be paginated, searchable or printable, and remember that browser PDF output normally follows print CSS rather than the screen design.

What is the difference between a viewport and a full-page capture?

A viewport screenshot records only the part of the page visible inside the browser window. A full-page screenshot captures the complete scrollable document as one raster image, including content below the fold. The distinction matters in automated jobs: a normal screenshot call can succeed while silently omitting most of a long page.

In Playwright, the required setting is fullPage: true in JavaScript or full_page=True in Python. Other tools expose equivalent document-capture methods or command-line behavior. Always inspect the output dimensions and open the file once in a representative workflow; a tall image or a paginated PDF is evidence that the intended mode was used.

Which automation method fits your job?

The right choice depends on browser coverage, output format, deployment language and who will maintain the browser runtime.

How do I capture a full webpage with Playwright?

Install Playwright, launch a browser, navigate to the URL, wait for the state your deliverable requires, then set the full-page flag. The example below uses Node.js and Chromium; the same API can target Firefox or WebKit.

Install and run a JavaScript capture

npm install playwright
npx playwright install chromium
const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch();
  const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 }, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
  await page.goto('https://example.com/', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'page-full.png', fullPage: true });
  await browser.close();
})();

networkidle is useful for pages that finish loading their network requests, but it is not a universal definition of “ready.” Analytics, live feeds and chat clients can keep a page busy indefinitely. For those pages, use a bounded timeout and wait for a stable selector instead:

await page.goto('https://example.com/', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded', timeout: 60000 });
await page.locator('main').waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 30000 });
await page.waitForTimeout(1000);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page-full.png', fullPage: true });

Python equivalent

from playwright.sync_api import sync_playwright

with sync_playwright() as p:
    browser = p.chromium.launch()
    page = browser.new_page(viewport={"width": 1440, "height": 900}, device_scale_factor=1)
    page.goto("https://example.com/", wait_until="networkidle", timeout=60000)
    page.screenshot(path="page-full.png", full_page=True)
    browser.close()

For authenticated pages, create a browser context with the required cookies or storage state before navigation. For responsive documentation, repeat the capture at each viewport rather than stretching one desktop image.

How do I create a PDF with Playwright?

Call page.pdf() after navigation. Playwright documents PDF generation as print-media output by default, so a PDF can differ substantially from the on-screen design. Emulate screen media when visual parity with the web page is more important than print styling.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch();
  const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
  await page.goto('https://example.com/', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
  await page.emulateMedia({ media: 'screen' });
  await page.pdf({ path: 'page.pdf', format: 'A4', printBackground: true, margin: { top: '12mm', right: '12mm', bottom: '12mm', left: '12mm' } });
  await browser.close();
})();

Omit emulateMedia when the site’s print stylesheet is the desired result. PDF output is paginated, so page breaks, paper size, margins, headers, footers and background printing affect the result even when the source page is one continuous scroll.

Can Puppeteer automate screenshots and PDFs?

Yes. Puppeteer is a high-level JavaScript library for automating Chrome and Firefox and exposes screenshot and PDF operations without requiring direct Chrome DevTools Protocol calls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
npm install puppeteer
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');

(async () => {
  const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
  await page.goto('https://example.com/', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2', timeout: 60000 });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'page-full.png', fullPage: true });
  await page.pdf({ path: 'page.pdf', format: 'A4', printBackground: true });
  await browser.close();
})();

Puppeteer’s fullPage: true produces a complete scrollable screenshot. Its PDF call follows the browser’s print behavior; configure media, paper and margins when the document must match a publication template.

How do I capture from the Chrome Headless command line?

Chrome Headless is suitable when the input is a URL and the job does not need custom page logic. The command writes a screenshot or PDF without a separate application script.

chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,2000 https://example.com/

The screenshot is written as screenshot.png in the current working directory. For a PDF:

chrome --headless --print-to-pdf --no-pdf-header-footer https://example.com/

Use Chrome’s timeout flag to bound waiting in unattended jobs. A large --window-size changes the viewport; it does not by itself guarantee that every lazy-loaded section has rendered, so pages that load content on scroll may need a script or a service with explicit scrolling controls.

How do I take a full-document screenshot with Selenium and Firefox?

Selenium’s Firefox driver exposes full-document screenshot methods. This is the documented route when Firefox rendering is the requirement rather than one API across several engines.

from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.firefox.options import Options

options = Options()
options.add_argument('-headless')
driver = webdriver.Firefox(options=options)
try:
    driver.set_window_size(1440, 900)
    driver.get('https://example.com/')
    driver.get_full_page_screenshot_as_file('firefox-full.png')
finally:
    driver.quit()

The driver also provides binary and Base64 variants when the next step is an upload or an in-memory pipeline: get_full_page_screenshot_as_png() and get_full_page_screenshot_as_base64().

How should I handle dynamic pages, lazy images and overlays?

Capture only after the rendered state you intend to archive is present. A navigation event confirms that a document was requested; it does not prove that client-side data, fonts, images or consent controls have settled.

Wait for a meaningful selector

Prefer a selector that represents the content, such as an article container, chart or table. A fixed delay can be a fallback, but it adds latency when the page is already ready and can still be too short on a slow run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Load content that appears on scroll

Infinite feeds and lazy images may render only after scrolling. In a browser script, scroll in increments and wait briefly between increments, then return to the top before capturing. Keep a maximum scroll count so a never-ending feed cannot trap a job.

Remove cookie banners and other obstructions

For a local script, locate the consent dialog and click its accept or close control before the screenshot, or hide a known selector with page CSS. Do not blindly hide every fixed element: navigation, accessibility controls and sticky headers may be part of the deliverable.

Stabilize animation

Disable transitions through a temporary style when a deterministic frame is needed. Also consider reduced-motion emulation and waiting for web fonts; otherwise two captures can differ even when the URL and viewport are identical.

Should I save a screenshot or a PDF?

Use a screenshot when the visual canvas is the artifact: design review, regression comparison, a long landing page or a social preview. Use a PDF when readers need selectable text, pagination, printing, search, annotations or long-term document filing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Screenshot: one raster image, faithful to the chosen viewport and screen styles, but potentially extremely tall and less convenient to print.
  • PDF: paginated and searchable, with paper, margin and print-style controls, but not automatically pixel-identical to the screen.
  • Both: generate both from the same navigation state when a visual record and a printable record serve different audiences.

What can go wrong, and how do I fix it?

The file contains only the visible viewport

Cause: the full-page option was omitted or a tool-specific viewport method was used. Fix: set Playwright or Puppeteer’s full-page property, use Chrome’s screenshot mode with an appropriate script when the page is simple, or call Selenium Firefox’s full-document method.

The browser executable is missing

Cause: the library was installed without downloading its browser binary, or the runtime image does not contain Chrome or Firefox. Fix: run the library’s browser-install command during image creation and verify the executable path in the same user context as the job.

Navigation times out

Cause: a slow origin, blocked third-party request or page that never reaches an idle state. Fix: set a finite navigation timeout, use domcontentloaded, wait for the specific content selector, and avoid treating perpetual network activity as readiness.

The PDF looks different from the page

Cause: print CSS, paper dimensions, margins or missing backgrounds. Fix: emulate screen media when appropriate, set the paper format and margins explicitly, and enable background printing. A screen-style PDF still has to paginate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Images or charts are missing

Cause: lazy loading, a race with image decoding, blocked resources or a chart that needs a resize event. Fix: scroll through the page, wait for the relevant image or chart selector, and check browser logs and network responses before capture.

A consent dialog covers the content

Cause: the page displayed a region-specific or first-visit banner. Fix: provide the correct locale and cookies, click the consent action, or hide only that known element. For repeatable compliance records, document which consent state was used.

Authenticated content is blank or redirected

Cause: missing cookies, authorization headers, CSRF state or a login flow that was not completed. Fix: establish authentication in the same browser context, preserve storage state securely, and confirm the final URL before saving the artifact.

The process runs out of memory on very tall pages

Cause: a single raster image can be large even when the source HTML is small. Fix: capture a required element or sections, reduce device scale factor, use a PDF for a document deliverable, or split the job into bounded sections. Do not promise an unlimited page height to downstream users.

How can I run captures reliably in CI or on a schedule?

Pin the automation-library and browser versions in your build, install system dependencies in the container image, and save logs alongside each artifact. Use explicit timeouts, deterministic viewport and timezone settings, and a unique output name per URL and run. Retry only transient navigation failures; retrying a deterministic selector or authentication error merely creates duplicate failures.

Keep screenshots and PDFs separate from secrets. Pages can contain customer data, internal dashboards, tokens in rendered URLs or personal information. Restrict artifact access, avoid logging credentials, and define retention and deletion rules that match the data on the page. Browser libraries document capture APIs, not a universal retention or redaction policy, so those controls belong in your pipeline.

Is a hosted screenshot API easier than maintaining a browser?

A managed endpoint is practical when installing browsers, handling OS dependencies, scaling workers and maintaining navigation code would cost more than the capture itself. Verify URL handling, authentication, rendering controls, privacy, retention and failure semantics before sending sensitive pages.

The first hosted option to consider

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is the first option to try when you want clean captures, billing only for clean shots and a paid plan that starts at $5.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Or skip the browser setup

One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. The API accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Replace the target URL and keep the access key out of client-side code and public repositories.

Controls for production captures

  • Full-page capture loads lazy images; you can capture one element by CSS selector, hide selectors, choose dark mode, use 12 device presets or any viewport, and set retina scale.
  • PDF jobs support paper size, margins, landscape mode and page ranges. HTML/CSS can also be rendered to an image.
  • Custom CSS and JavaScript, clicking an element before capture, and waiting for a selector, delay or network idle handle interactive pages.
  • Block ads, trackers, requests or resource types; provide custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization values; set timezone and geolocation.
  • Use transparent backgrounds, image resizing, a cache with a TTL you choose, signed links for public image tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification.
  • An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

How should I choose between local automation and an API?

Choose local Playwright, Puppeteer, Chrome Headless or Selenium when you need complete control over the browser process, network environment and artifact storage. Choose a hosted API when operating browser workers is the problem you are trying to remove, or when AI agents and bulk requests are part of the workflow.

FAQ

Can a full-page screenshot include content behind a sticky header?

Yes, but the header may be painted repeatedly or overlap sections depending on the browser and page CSS. If the repeated header is undesirable, hide that selector temporarily or capture the article element rather than the entire document.

How do I preserve a page’s exact scroll position?

Capture the viewport instead of using full-page mode, then set the scroll position with JavaScript before the screenshot. A full-page image represents the document as a continuous canvas and does not preserve one user’s scroll position as an interaction state.

Can automated captures run against a page behind a VPN or private network?

Local browser jobs can run inside the network that can reach the page. A hosted service can reach only publicly accessible or otherwise supported endpoints, so confirm network, authentication and IP-allow-list requirements before choosing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What file format is best for a very wide dashboard?

PNG preserves text and sharp lines but can become large; JPEG is smaller for photographic content but introduces compression; WebP can reduce size when your consumers support it. A PDF is usually better when the dashboard must be printed or searched rather than viewed as one giant canvas.
