To capture an interactive WebGL site as one full-page image, first put the experience in the exact scene you want, let below-the-fold content load, and then use Chrome DevTools’ Capture a full size screenshot command. For repeatable captures, automate the same state with Playwright or Puppeteer and call a full-page screenshot only after a site-specific readiness check. A full-page image records one selected state; it does not contain every camera angle, hover state, click result, or animation frame. If the canvas is blank, diagnose WebGL drawing-buffer timing separately from page-capture problems.

What does “full-page” mean for a WebGL website?

Full-page capture means the complete scrollable document, including content outside the current viewport. It does not mean a single image containing every possible interaction. A WebGL scene can change when a visitor drags, clicks, hovers, scrolls, changes a control, or waits for an animation. Choose the state that matters, capture it, and make additional captures for other important states.

Browser-level capture is usually the right output when the result must include the WebGL canvas plus headings, controls, text, images, and layout around it. A canvas export such as canvas.toDataURL() contains only the canvas bitmap, not the surrounding HTML. MDN also documents that a non-origin-clean canvas can raise a SecurityError; for large images it recommends considering toBlob() instead of building a data URL (MDN canvas.toDataURL()).

How do I take a one-off full-page WebGL screenshot in Chrome?

Chrome DevTools is the simplest no-code method for a single, deliberately chosen scene. The documented full-size command captures page content beyond the viewport (Chrome DevTools device mode).

  1. Open the intended URL and viewport. Set the browser width and height that should appear in the image. A responsive WebGL layout may select a different camera, control placement, or shader at another width.
  2. Reach the desired scene. Drag the camera, click controls, select a model, or set any application options. Stop animations or select a stable pose when the application provides that control.
  3. Allow the page to finish its own loading work. Scroll through sections that use lazy loading, wait for images and fonts, and check that the WebGL canvas is rendering. Return to the intended scene afterward. Scrolling can itself drive a WebGL animation, so do not assume the pose remains unchanged.
  4. Open DevTools. Use Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows or Linux, or Command+Option+I on macOS.
  5. Use the device toolbar. In the device toolbar, open More options and choose Capture a full size screenshot. Chrome saves an image containing the full scrollable page, rather than only the visible viewport.
  6. Inspect the saved file. Check the top, bottom, fixed headers, lazy images, text, and WebGL region. A successful download does not prove that every section or the final rendered frame is correct.

You can also open DevTools’ Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+P on macOS and search for the full-size screenshot command. Labels can change between Chrome releases, so use the documented “full size” command as the anchor.

How should I prepare lazy-loaded sections and fonts?

Full-page capture can include a document whose lower sections have never been rendered. Intersection-based lazy loading commonly waits until an element enters or approaches the viewport (MDN Intersection Observer API).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Scroll through every section that must appear, pausing long enough for images, WebGL assets, and text to render.
  • Return to the required camera pose or application state after the pass. A scroll-linked experience may have changed the scene.
  • For a page you control, await document.fonts.ready before capture when font metrics affect layout.
  • Do not use img.complete as proof that an image loaded successfully: it can also be true for a broken image. Check the image’s dimensions or a page-specific loaded/error signal.
  • Define a stopping point for effectively infinite pages. A finite screenshot cannot represent content that continuously appends as you scroll.

How do I automate a repeatable full-page capture with Playwright?

Playwright gives you repeatable navigation and interaction, but the script must decide when this particular WebGL application is ready. Its documented option means: “When true, takes a screenshot of the full scrollable page, instead of the currently visible viewport” (Playwright Page.screenshot API).

Minimal JavaScript example

Install Playwright with npm install -D playwright, then save this as capture-webgl.mjs:

import { chromium } from 'playwright';

const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({
  viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
  deviceScaleFactor: 1
});

await page.goto('https://example.com/interactive', {
  waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
  timeout: 90_000
});

// Replace these selectors and actions with the application’s real controls.
await page.locator('[data-scene="showcase"]').click();
await page.locator('#webgl-canvas').waitFor({ state: 'visible', timeout: 30_000 });

// Scroll to trigger intersection-based lazy loading, then return to the top.
await page.evaluate(async () => {
  for (let y = 0; y < document.documentElement.scrollHeight; y += 800) {
    window.scrollTo(0, y);
    await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 150));
  }
  window.scrollTo(0, 0);
  await document.fonts.ready;
});

// Use a page-specific readiness marker when the application exposes one.
await page.locator('[data-render-ready="true"]').waitFor({
  state: 'attached',
  timeout: 30_000
});

await page.screenshot({
  path: 'webgl-full-page.png',
  fullPage: true,
  animations: 'disabled'
});

await browser.close();

The documented call is await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true }) (Playwright screenshots guide). The selectors, scene action, readiness marker, and scrolling loop above are illustrative: replace them with signals that the target application actually provides. The animations setting addresses CSS and Web Animations; it does not necessarily stop a JavaScript-driven WebGL render loop.

Waiting for a real render signal

A network-idle event alone is not proof that a WebGL frame is visible. Prefer a marker your application sets after assets are uploaded and the first intended frame is drawn, such as data-render-ready="true". If you own the app, set that marker from the render pipeline rather than from an unrelated network callback. Otherwise, combine a visible canvas check with a short, documented application-specific wait and inspect the output.

Controlling the state before capture

Automation should reproduce the same viewport, device scale, URL parameters, cookies, login state, and user actions every time. Capture separate files for meaningful camera positions or interaction results. Do not claim that one full-page shot represents every frame of a continuously animated scene.

Can Puppeteer capture the same kind of image?

Yes. Puppeteer’s screenshot options also include fullPage. The workflow is the same: navigate, perform the interactions that establish the scene, trigger lazy sections, wait for an application-specific ready condition, and then capture.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.goto('https://example.com/interactive', {
  waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
  timeout: 90_000
});
await page.waitForSelector('#webgl-canvas', { visible: true, timeout: 30_000 });
await page.waitForSelector('[data-render-ready="true"]', { timeout: 30_000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'webgl-full-page.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();

Puppeteer does not automatically make lazy content load or guarantee that the desired WebGL frame has rendered. Those checks belong to the page-specific script.

What should I do when the WebGL area is blank?

First determine whether the browser-level screenshot is missing the canvas region or whether a canvas-only export is blank. These are different failures. A page screenshot can include a blank canvas because the drawing buffer was cleared after rendering, while a canvas export can fail because the canvas is not origin-clean.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Redraw immediately before exporting

For an application you control, render the intended scene immediately before exporting it, or export from inside the render loop. WebGL Fundamentals explains that the drawing buffer may be cleared after a frame and presents those approaches (WebGL Fundamentals WebGL tips).

Consider preserveDrawingBuffer at context creation

When creating the context, you can request preservation:

const gl = canvas.getContext('webgl', {
  preserveDrawingBuffer: true
});

MDN states, “If the value is true the buffers will not be cleared and will preserve their values until cleared or overwritten by the author” (MDN getContext()). Preservation can have an optimization cost. The choice must be made when the context is created; calling getContext() later with different attributes cannot replace an already established context.

When the whole page is wrong

If the WebGL region is correct but lower HTML sections are absent, investigate lazy rendering, scroll-dependent layout, and infinite-scroll behavior before changing the renderer. If the entire page is white or navigation failed, treat it as a browser navigation, authentication, certificate, or bot-check problem rather than a WebGL export problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between a canvas export and a full-page screenshot?

Output Includes Best use Important limitation
canvas.toDataURL() or toBlob() The WebGL canvas bitmap Saving only the rendered 3D scene from an application you control No surrounding HTML; a tainted canvas can raise SecurityError
Chrome full-size screenshot The complete scrollable document and canvas A one-off visual record of the page Manual and limited to the selected state
Playwright or Puppeteer fullPage The complete scrollable document and canvas Repeatable captures with scripted interactions Requires application-specific readiness and lazy-content handling

Which capture method fits a WebGL screenshot job?

Choose based on repetition, state control, lazy-content behavior, and whether a hosted service can reproduce the required session. No published source here establishes a cross-vendor speed or success-rate ranking.

Method Best fit Relevant capability Trade-off
ScreenshotNeo Hosted one-off or batch captures when clean output and API control matter Full-page capture with lazy images loaded; custom viewport, device, waits, cookies, headers, JavaScript, CSS, blocking rules, bulk calls, async jobs, PDFs, and an MCP server Requires an API key and a request rather than an interactive local browser session
Chrome DevTools One chosen state Built-in “Capture a full size screenshot” command Manual; no repeatable interaction script
Playwright Repeatable browser workflows Scripted actions and fullPage: true Readiness, scrolling, and scene selection are your responsibility
Puppeteer Repeatable Chromium workflows Screenshot options include fullPage Same application-specific WebGL and lazy-loading caveats
Browserless Hosted browser capture Vendor documents options.fullPage: true and a separate scrollPage: true setting for triggering lazy-loaded content The two settings are distinct and must be configured for the page
ScreenshotOne Hosted full-page API workflows Vendor documents full_page=true, automatic full-page scrolling, and an optional by_sections algorithm Animated WebGL targets should be checked for the required frame and layout
Capture Projects needing a hosted browser session Vendor advertises WebGL rendering and browser sessions That is a vendor claim, not evidence of success on every interactive site

How we picked

The criteria are the controls documented for this problem: ability to reproduce login and interactions, full-page behavior, lazy-content handling, viewport and rendering controls, and the quality of the captured canvas. The available documentation does not provide a common benchmark, so the table does not rank speed or reliability.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It is the first hosted option to try when you want clean shots, only clean shots billed, and a paid plan starting at $5.

Its full-page capture can load lazy images. You can select one element by CSS selector, set dark mode, choose one of 12 device presets or any viewport, use retina scale, set a wait for a selector, delay, or network idle, and run custom JavaScript or CSS. Cookies, custom headers, user agents, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, request/resource blocking, click-before-capture actions, and a cache TTL are available. PDFs support paper size, margins, landscape mode, and page ranges. Signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, an OpenAPI specification, and compatibility with parameter names used by other screenshot APIs are also available.

Plan Price Included shots
Free $0 1,000 per month; no card
Starter $5 3,000
Growth $15 15,000
Pro $39 60,000
Scale $99 250,000
Business $249 1,000,000

How do I troubleshoot a failed or incomplete capture?

The WebGL canvas is blank only in the saved image

Render immediately before export or export from the render loop. If you control context creation, consider preserveDrawingBuffer: true and accept its possible optimization cost. A later context request cannot retrofit that attribute.

The canvas is visible, but sections below the fold are missing

Trigger intersection observers by scrolling through the page, wait for the application’s loaded markers, and capture again. Inspect for an infinite-scroll boundary instead of assuming “full page” has a natural end.

The screenshot shows the wrong camera pose

Scrolling, timers, and pointer actions may drive the scene. Reapply the pose immediately before capture, disable only animations that the tool can actually control, and use a render-ready signal tied to the desired state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Images appear as broken placeholders

img.complete can be true for a failed image. Check the element’s natural dimensions, a successful network response, or an application-level image-loaded event. For a hosted API, configure a wait condition or delay appropriate to the page.

A canvas export raises SecurityError

The canvas is not origin-clean, commonly because it contains cross-origin resources without the required permission. Use a browser-level page screenshot when the goal is the complete page, or correct the resource and CORS configuration in an application you control.

The automation script times out

Separate navigation timeout from readiness timeout. Confirm the URL, authentication, certificate behavior, and bot checks; then increase the timeout only for the operation that is genuinely slow. A longer timeout cannot fix a selector that never appears.

The page changes while the screenshot is being taken

Freeze the application’s own presentation mode if it provides one, capture at a deterministic animation point, or store several state-specific images. CSS animation controls do not guarantee that a JavaScript WebGL loop has stopped.

How can I make recurring captures reliable?

  • Pin the viewport and device scale factor; responsive breakpoints change both layout and scene composition.
  • Use stable selectors or application events instead of arbitrary long sleeps whenever possible.
  • Record the URL, viewport, scene parameters, authentication state, and readiness condition alongside each output.
  • Scroll deliberately to trigger lazy content, then restore the intended scene before capture.
  • Keep browser-level screenshots for page composition and canvas exports for a canvas-only asset.
  • Review output files for missing bottom sections, fixed overlays, clipped text, and blank WebGL regions.
  • For batches, use a queue and bounded concurrency so the target site and your browser resources are not overwhelmed. A hosted service with bulk calls or asynchronous jobs can remove local browser orchestration, but it still needs page-specific waits for interactive scenes.
  • Cache only when the page state and freshness requirements allow it. A cached result is not evidence that a newly selected WebGL pose was rendered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a full-page screenshot capture every WebGL animation frame?

No. It captures one rendered document state. Capture a sequence at defined timestamps or interaction states if you need an animation record, and use video capture when individual frames are not sufficient.

Why does scrolling sometimes change the WebGL scene before capture?

Many immersive pages bind camera movement or shader parameters to scroll position. Treat scrolling as an interaction: record the target scroll position and restore the required scene after lazy sections have loaded.

Is a transparent background possible for a WebGL page screenshot?

A transparent result depends on how the page and capture tool render the canvas and surrounding document. ScreenshotNeo documents transparent-background support; a normal browser screenshot generally reflects the page’s painted background.

Should I use PNG, JPEG, or WebP for the result?

Use PNG when crisp text or lossless canvas detail matters, and JPEG or WebP when file size is more important and the visual tolerates compression. Keep the format consistent for visual regression comparisons.
