Yes—Fujifilm’s XF 400mm f/4.5 R LM OIS WR is a serious long-reach option for X-mount wildlife, aircraft and motorsport photographers who value a bright fixed prime and manageable carrying weight. Its 400mm focal length frames like 609mm on 35mm-format cameras, while the F4.5 aperture, claimed 5.5-stop optical stabilization and linear-motor autofocus target moving subjects at distance. The trade-off is fundamental: this is a 1,245g fixed-focal-length lens, not a flexible zoom. You must work around one field of view, and the available evidence combines Fujifilm specifications with positive but non-laboratory reviewer impressions. The short hands-on report available for this lens specifically says it could not establish corner sharpness conclusively. For photographers who can live with that framing constraint, the XF 400mm is a compelling balance between reach, aperture and portability; those needing more reach or framing flexibility should consider the XF 500mm or a compatible teleconverter instead.
What is the Fujifilm XF 400mm f/4.5 R LM OIS WR?
The XF 400mm f/4.5 R LM OIS WR is a fixed super-telephoto prime for Fujifilm X-mount cameras. Fujifilm gives its 35mm-format equivalent as 609mm, a crop-format framing description rather than a change in the lens’s physical focal length. The maximum aperture is F4.5, and the lens is designed for distant wildlife, motorsport and aircraft photography.

The practical question is whether a fixed 400mm view gives you enough subject size and enough room to track movement without making the lens unmanageable.
What are the key XF 400mm F4.5 specifications?
The core specification points explain both the lens’s appeal and its physical demands.

How much reach does 400mm provide on an X-series camera?
On Fujifilm’s APS-C X system, 400mm is presented as a 609mm-equivalent field of view. That narrow 4.1-degree angle makes distant subjects occupy substantially more of the frame than they would with a conventional telephoto zoom. A bird on a far branch, a race car across a track or an aircraft in flight can be framed tightly without immediately resorting to aggressive cropping.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Equivalent focal length does not increase optical detail by itself. Subject distance, atmospheric haze, camera resolution and focus accuracy still determine how much fine detail survives. The 609mm figure is most useful as a framing aid: it tells you how narrow the view appears relative to a 35mm-format camera, not that the lens has physically become a 609mm optic.
A fixed 400mm also gives a predictable perspective. Once you learn the field of view, you can position yourself and anticipate where a subject will enter the frame. The downside is equally predictable: a nearby animal or a vehicle approaching rapidly can leave the frame before you can zoom out.
How sharp is XF400mmF4.5 across the frame?
Published impressions are encouraging, but the evidence does not amount to a complete laboratory assessment. Digital Camera World reported strong sharpness and clarity, smooth bokeh, minimal distortion and color fringing, and good flare resistance in that reviewer’s use. Those are subjective review findings, not guaranteed results for every camera body, distance or atmospheric condition.
A separate hands-on report from a short bird-of-prey session explicitly says the time available did not allow a definitive judgment of corner sharpness. That limitation matters with a super-telephoto: the center of a frame may look excellent while edge performance varies with focus distance, shutter speed, heat shimmer and subject movement. Early sample images and brief handling should therefore not be treated as exhaustive testing.

The nine-blade rounded diaphragm is specified to produce a smoother aperture shape, while the F4.5 maximum aperture can separate a distant subject from its background when focus distance and background spacing cooperate. Neither the element count nor the blade shape guarantees a particular bokeh character in every scene.
Does XF400mmF4.5 have autofocus?
Yes. Fujifilm says the lens uses a high-speed linear autofocus motor and provides focus presets. Digital Camera World described autofocus as effective in the reviewer’s use, but that is an impression rather than a standardized speed or tracking measurement.

Autofocus results will depend on the X-series body, firmware, subject-recognition mode, light level and contrast. A lens cannot compensate for a body that lacks the tracking behavior or recognition features your subject requires. For birds and aircraft, use the body’s current subject-detection options where available, but confirm that your specific camera supports them and that firmware is current.
Focus presets can be useful when returning to a known distance, such as a favored perch or a section of track. They are not a substitute for continuous autofocus when the subject is moving unpredictably. Before a paid assignment, configure button assignments and focus behavior with your own body rather than assuming every X-series camera presents identical controls.
Does XF400mmF4.5 have Optical Image Stabilization (OIS)?
Yes. Fujifilm rates the optical image stabilization at up to 5.5 stops. “Up to” is a manufacturer rating under specified conditions, not a promise that every photograph can be made sharp at a shutter speed 5.5 stops slower than usual.
Stabilization primarily helps counter camera movement. It does not freeze a bird’s wing, a moving car or an aircraft crossing the frame; subject motion still requires an appropriate shutter speed. For moving subjects, think of OIS as helping the viewfinder stay steadier and reducing camera shake while you maintain the shutter speed needed for action.
Fujifilm also describes weather-resistant construction, intended for use with a weather-resistant X-series body. Weather resistance is not waterproofing: it does not promise immunity to heavy rain, dust, salt spray, condensation, extreme temperatures or impact. Keep the mount, controls and connections protected, and follow the camera maker’s handling guidance when conditions deteriorate.
How portable is a 1,245g 400mm prime?
At approximately 1,245g without the cap and hood, the XF 400mm is substantial but lighter than many professional 500mm-class DSLR-era designs. Its listed dimensions—104.5mm in diameter and 239.5mm long—still require a dedicated bag compartment or a suitably deep backpack. The supplied shoulder strap and tripod-collar foot acknowledge that users may carry it separately from the camera body.

Handheld use is plausible for short sessions, especially with the claimed stabilization, but comfort depends on your body, technique and shooting duration. Supporting the lens at the collar or foot keeps leverage closer to the center of gravity than holding the camera grip alone. For long waits at a hide, sports sideline or observation point, a monopod or tripod can reduce fatigue even when the lens is capable of handheld work.
Balance changes when you add a battery grip, a larger X-series body or a teleconverter. Set up the camera and lens together before an assignment, check that the tripod foot locks securely, and make sure your support head can handle the combined load. The quoted 1,245g excludes accessories, so the complete kit will weigh more.

Is the XF 400mm better suited to wildlife, motorsport or aircraft?
It is designed for all three, but the best fit depends on distance and how quickly framing changes.
- Wildlife: The 609mm-equivalent view can fill the frame with distant birds and mammals while keeping you farther from skittish subjects. A fixed field of view rewards deliberate positioning; it is less forgiving when an animal approaches suddenly.
- Motorsport: The long reach works across a circuit, and F4.5 can maintain useful shutter speeds in daylight. Trackside access, safety barriers and rapidly changing distances may make a zoom easier for some viewpoints.
- Aircraft: The narrow view can isolate aircraft against the sky, but tracking discipline matters. A fast-moving aircraft entering close overhead can exceed the framing flexibility of a fixed 400mm.
These are intended use cases identified by Fujifilm, not evidence that every autofocus mode performs equally on every body. Your subject distance, local light and camera resolution should drive the final choice.
What is the difference between the XF 400mm and the XF 500mm?
The XF 500mm offers more native reach, while the XF 400mm offers a wider 609mm-equivalent framing and a potentially easier-to-carry package. A Digital Camera World reviewer reported preferring the 400mm’s 609mm-equivalent view and handling because the XF 500mm’s 762mm-equivalent framing was too long for many of that reviewer’s situations. That is a personal shooting preference, not a universal ranking.
| Decision factor | XF 400mm f/4.5 | XF 500mm |
|---|---|---|
| 35mm-format equivalent | 609mm | 762mm, as cited by the review comparison |
| Framing | More forgiving when subjects move closer | Tighter view for very distant subjects |
| Handling | Reviewer reported a preference for its handling | Reviewer found the framing too long in many situations |
| Best match | Mixed distances, birds, circuits and general long-lens work | Maximum native reach when subjects remain far away |
Choose based on the distances you actually encounter. A longer lens is not automatically better if you regularly lose subjects at the edge of the frame or cannot reposition quickly. Conversely, if your subjects are consistently tiny even at 400mm, the 500mm’s tighter view may reduce cropping.
What do the XF1.4X TC WR and XF2X TC WR teleconverters do?
Fujifilm lists both teleconverters as compatible with the XF 400mm. The XF1.4X TC WR produces 560mm, or 853mm in 35mm-format terms. The XF2X TC WR produces 800mm, or 1,219mm equivalent.
| Configuration | Physical focal length | 35mm-format equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Lens alone | 400mm | 609mm |
| XF1.4X TC WR | 560mm | 853mm |
| XF2X TC WR | 800mm | 1,219mm |
Teleconverters trade flexibility for reach without changing lenses in the field. They also introduce aperture and image-quality trade-offs, and the cited Fujifilm specifications and reviewer reports do not provide a complete measured account of those effects for this lens. Check Fujifilm’s current compatibility and operating notes for your camera and converter before purchase, especially if autofocus behavior, low-light work or fine feather detail is critical.

Adding a converter narrows the field of view further, making subject acquisition harder. Practice finding and tracking the subject at 400mm before moving to 560mm or 800mm, and use a support system when the additional reach magnifies every movement.
How close can the XF 400mm focus?
The minimum focus distance is 2.75m from the focal plane, with a maximum magnification of 0.16x. That is useful for larger animals or details at a distance, but it is not a macro lens. Small subjects close to the camera may not fill the frame as much as you expect despite the long focal length.

At minimum focus, depth of field is still narrow at F4.5. Focus accuracy and subject movement become critical, and stopping down can increase depth of field when light allows. If close-up detail is a primary requirement, evaluate the working distance and magnification against your subject rather than assuming “400mm” means macro-like enlargement.
What are the main handling controls and accessories?
The lens uses a tripod collar and supplied foot for mounting. Keeping the collar attached lets you rotate between horizontal and vertical orientation while maintaining a more balanced setup than mounting the camera body directly to a head. The included hood helps control stray light and protects the front element, while the pouch and shoulder strap support transport.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe 95mm front thread accepts filters in that size. A clear or protective filter is optional; adding one can simplify cleaning but also adds another optical surface and cost. Use a properly sized hood and cap when the lens is stored, and avoid forcing a filter onto a damaged or cross-threaded front ring.
How should you set up the XF 400mm for action?
- Start with shutter speed: Select a speed appropriate to the subject’s motion before fine-tuning aperture and ISO. OIS cannot freeze subject movement.
- Choose continuous autofocus for moving subjects: Use your body’s AF-C or equivalent tracking mode and verify that the selected area suits birds, vehicles or aircraft.
- Assign focus presets deliberately: Save a known distance only when you repeatedly return to the same perch, bend or viewing zone.
- Enable stabilization according to the support: Follow Fujifilm’s body-and-lens guidance when switching between handheld, monopod and tripod use.
- Practice subject acquisition at native reach: Find the subject at 400mm before adding a converter; the narrower 560mm or 800mm view makes initial acquisition more demanding.
- Review focus and atmosphere, not just sharpness: At extreme distances, heat shimmer and haze can soften detail even when focus is correct.
Menu names and available recognition modes vary by X-series body. Consult the camera’s current manual rather than assuming a setting shown on one model exists on another.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the lens’s biggest trade-offs?
The first trade-off is the fixed focal length. You gain the optical simplicity and predictable framing of a prime, but you cannot zoom out when a subject approaches. A second is size: 1,245g is manageable for a professional super-telephoto, yet still enough to influence your bag, support and fatigue over a full day.
The third is evidence quality. Independent impressions are positive, but they are not a controlled comparison or a complete corner-to-corner laboratory test. The brief bird-of-prey report specifically withholds a definitive corner-sharpness conclusion. Treat claims about sharpness, autofocus and stabilization as either Fujifilm specifications or named reviewer impressions, not universal guarantees.
Finally, teleconverters add reach but may reduce effective aperture and alter autofocus or image quality. Fujifilm confirms compatibility and resulting focal lengths; verify the latest technical notes if those trade-offs determine your purchase.
What did the XF 400mm cost at launch?
DPReview reported a US launch price of $3,200 and availability around mid-September 2026. Fujifilm’s launch announcement gives a September 18, 2026 release date for Japan. These are dated launch references, not today’s universal price.

Who should buy the Fujifilm XF 400mm f/4.5?
This lens makes the most sense for an X-system photographer who regularly works at long distances, wants a bright F4.5 prime and can compose confidently at one field of view. Wildlife photographers who find 500mm too tight, motorsport shooters positioned far from the track and aircraft photographers seeking a 609mm-equivalent view are the clearest matches.
It is a weaker fit if you need rapid changes from wide to tight framing, frequently work in cramped hides or expect macro-level magnification. In those situations, a zoom or a shorter telephoto may be more practical, even if it offers less native reach. The right choice is determined by your subject distances and carrying tolerance, not by the equivalent focal-length number alone.
Verdict: is this a top-tier super-telephoto for X mount?
The XF 400mm f/4.5 R LM OIS WR is a high-end, purpose-built super-telephoto whose strongest case is balance: 609mm-equivalent reach, a bright F4.5 aperture, a claimed 5.5-stop OIS system and a listed 1,245g body that is substantial without being extreme. Fujifilm’s specifications and positive review impressions support that positioning, while the limited hands-on evidence means corner sharpness and all-body autofocus behavior should be treated with appropriate caution.
Choose it over the XF 500mm when a slightly wider long-lens view and easier handling match your real shooting distances. Add the XF1.4X TC WR or XF2X TC WR only when you genuinely need 853mm- or 1,219mm-equivalent framing and accept the associated optical and aperture compromises. For photographers who can work within a fixed 400mm view, this is one of the most compelling native long-reach primes in Fujifilm’s X lineup; for everyone else, the framing constraint is the deciding limitation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the 609mm equivalent mean the lens physically becomes 609mm?
No. The lens remains a 400mm optic; 609mm is Fujifilm’s 35mm-format equivalent field-of-view description for an X-mount camera. It is useful for comparing framing across sensor formats, not for calculating a change in optical focal length.
Can I use the XF 400mm in rain?
Fujifilm describes the lens as weather-resistant when paired with a weather-resistant X-series body. That does not make the combination waterproof or immune to heavy rain, dust, salt spray, condensation or impact, so protection and manufacturer handling guidance still matter.
Do I need a 95mm filter for this lens?
No filter is required for the lens to operate. If you choose one, the front thread is 95mm; confirm the filter’s optical quality and compatibility with the supplied hood before buying.
Is the XF 400mm suitable for close-up photography?
It focuses as close as 2.75m and reaches 0.16x magnification, which can frame larger subjects or distant details well. Those figures do not make it a macro lens for small subjects at very short working distances.
