Verdict: The Fourth Frontier Frontier X2 is worth considering if you are a serious endurance or performance athlete who will use continuous ECG, HRV, breathing, strain and training-load data in the Frontier app. It is not good value if you only need a heart-rate feed for a watch or bike computer. The $579 price observed on the manufacturer’s page (checked October 2026), optional subscription features, limited swim suitability and the fact that connected devices may receive only heart rate make this a specialist purchase rather than a universal chest-strap upgrade.

Wareable’s August 2026 review found the lightweight hardware and vibration alerts useful for structured training, while also flagging the premium cost, paid features and missing automatic Strava sync in the reviewer’s setup. Those are review observations, not results independently reproduced here.

What is the Frontier X2, and who is it for?

The Frontier X2 is a 25-gram chest-worn monitor built around continuous electrocardiogram (ECG) capture rather than heart rate alone. Fourth Frontier positions it as a fitness and general-wellness product, with the companion app and web dashboard turning the signal into training-oriented metrics. Its intended audience is an athlete who wants more context around effort and recovery than a conventional heart-rate strap or wrist wearable usually provides.

The hardware measures 73 × 24 × 13 mm and uses an elastic chest strap. It is small enough to disappear under most training clothing, but it is still a chest device: fit, electrode contact and willingness to wear a strap regularly matter more than they would with a watch. The package includes the monitor, one elastic strap, a quick-start guide and a USB cable, according to the manufacturer’s product listing.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a runner, cyclist or field-sport athlete managing heart-rate zones, the most useful distinction is data depth. A basic strap can supply beats per minute to another device; Frontier X2 adds a continuous ECG stream and derives additional measures in its own software. That extra layer is valuable only if you will review it and change training decisions because of it.

What does the Frontier X2 measure?

The monitor records heart activity continuously and presents several derived signals. The manufacturer lists heart rate, heart-rate variability (HRV), breathing rate, strain, training load, body shock and step cadence. These metrics are most useful as a set: heart rate describes immediate intensity, while HRV, breathing and accumulated load can help you interpret how that effort fits into a longer training plan.

Continuous ECG and heart rate

ECG records the heart’s electrical activity through chest electrodes. In a training context, that can provide a richer signal than an optical sensor on a wrist, especially during rapid changes in effort or when arm movement is high. The Frontier app is where the ECG-derived information is intended to be viewed; the strap’s Bluetooth heart-rate output is a separate, simpler feed for other equipment.

HRV and breathing rate

HRV describes variation in the timing between beats, while breathing rate reflects respiratory rhythm. Both can move with exercise intensity, fatigue, stress and recovery status. They are trend signals, not a single-session verdict: compare readings made under similar conditions and avoid treating a change as proof of illness or readiness.

Strain, training load, body shock and cadence

Strain and training load are summaries intended to put an effort in context across a workout or a training block. Body shock is aimed at impact exposure, which may interest runners monitoring hard surfaces or repetitive loading. Step cadence is a running-oriented measure that can be useful alongside pace and heart rate. The value of these summaries depends on consistently wearing the strap and reviewing the same dashboard over time.

Is the Frontier X2 ECG a medical test?

No. Fourth Frontier states: “The Frontier X2 is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or medical condition.” Treat its ECG display and derived metrics as informational fitness data, not as a diagnosis, screening result or replacement for clinical care.

The manufacturer says the ECG resembles a V5 lead position and that signal quality was validated against a GE Holter Monitor. The product information available here does not provide a complete validation study or an independent accuracy statistic, so those statements should not be converted into a clinical-accuracy claim. If you have symptoms, a known heart condition or a clinician’s monitoring plan, follow that medical advice instead of using this strap to make treatment decisions.

Does Frontier X2 work with Garmin, Apple Watch and other devices?

It can act as a Bluetooth Low Energy heart-rate source, but compatibility is not the same as full data sharing. Fourth Frontier support says the device can connect simultaneously to one mobile app and two external heart-rate monitors. External equipment receives heart rate; the richer ECG and performance information remains in the Frontier app or web dashboard.

That distinction matters if you expect a sports watch or cycling computer to display every Frontier metric. A watch may record the strap’s heart rate while the Frontier app separately stores ECG, HRV, strain or training-load information. Pairing menus and supported profiles differ by device, so check the exact watch, computer or phone model before buying. The manufacturer’s compatibility guidance is at Fourth Frontier support.

What the connection limits mean in practice

  • For a watch user: use the strap as an external heart-rate sensor, then open Frontier software for the additional analysis.
  • For two training devices: the stated limit of one mobile app plus two external HRMs can cover a watch and a bike computer, provided each device supports the required Bluetooth profile.
  • For automatic training-platform sync: confirm the current integration list. Wareable reported no automatic Strava sync in the reviewer’s setup, which may not represent every account or software version.

How do you set up the Frontier X2?

Have the monitor, its strap, a compatible iOS or Android phone and a charged battery ready. The precise labels can change with app updates, but the setup sequence is straightforward.

  1. Charge the monitor. Use the supplied USB cable and wait for the device to indicate that charging is complete.
  2. Fit the strap. Place it firmly around the chest, with the sensing areas making consistent skin contact. It should not slide during movement, but it should remain comfortable enough for a full session.
  3. Install the Frontier app. Download the current iOS or Android app, create or sign in to an account and allow the Bluetooth permissions it requests.
  4. Pair in the app first. Select the Frontier X2 in the app’s device screen rather than relying only on the phone’s general Bluetooth settings. Complete any firmware or profile prompts before starting a workout.
  5. Add external equipment separately. On a watch or bike computer, choose the option to add an external heart-rate sensor and select the Frontier X2. Confirm that heart rate appears before beginning a structured session.
  6. Check the dashboard. After a short recording, verify that the app shows the expected ECG and training fields. If an external device shows only heart rate, that is normal for the stated connection model.

How long does the battery last?

Fourth Frontier quotes up to 24 hours of continuous use, 12–15 days under typical usage and a full charge in under 45 minutes. These are manufacturer figures, not independently measured results. The difference between continuous and typical-use claims means your interval between charges will depend on workout duration, recording habits, wireless connections and how often the monitor is left active.

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

For athletes training most days, the practical advantage is a short charging window that can fit between sessions. A full charge before a long event is still sensible; a battery estimate is not a guarantee, particularly when the monitor is transmitting to several devices or recording continuously.

Can you swim with the Frontier X2?

Do not buy it as a swim-first device. The product listing references IP67 certification and says water resistant up to 1 meter, while Wareable describes IP67 and up to 1.5 meters. Because those depth descriptions do not match, avoid treating either number as a universal swimming rating. IP67 also does not make a device a dedicated open-water or pool tracker.

For runners, cyclists and gym users who encounter sweat or rain, the protection may be reassuring when used within the manufacturer’s instructions. If pool workouts are central to your plan, choose equipment explicitly designed for swim tracking and verify the Frontier X2’s current water guidance before exposing it to prolonged immersion.

What did Wareable’s review find?

Wareable’s Laura Juozaponytė published her review on August 13, 2026, after using the monitor for VO2-max training and vibration alerts. She described the hardware as lightweight and responsive, and found the additional data useful for serious athletes. Vibration alerts helped her stay inside a target heart-rate zone without constantly checking a screen.

The same review called out the premium price and paid features, and noted that automatic Strava syncing was unavailable in the reviewer’s setup. It also described limited suitability for swimming. These observations explain the product’s niche: the strap can be compelling when its extra signals change how you train, but its value falls quickly if you want a simple, broadly compatible heart-rate accessory.

TechRadar’s search excerpt, retrieved October 25, 2026, says its reviewer used the unit in runs, gym sessions and meditation and wore it while the battery ran down. The excerpt does not provide the full findings or test duration, so it cannot support a more detailed performance conclusion. The available independent evidence is therefore useful for describing the experience and trade-offs, not for ranking ECG accuracy against competing products.

What costs extra?

Frontier Premium is an optional add-on described by the manufacturer. Wareable specifically reported that sleep analysis and VO2-max estimates required an additional subscription during its review. The current bundle, regional price and which features remain available without Premium can change, so check the account and checkout screens before purchase.

That recurring cost changes the ownership calculation. Compare the price of the hardware plus the subscription period you actually expect to use, not just the one-time $579 listing. If your goal is heart rate on a watch, paying for Premium may add little; if you intend to use sleep, VO2-max estimates and the broader dashboard, include those fees in your budget.

Is the $579 Frontier X2 worth it?

For the right athlete, yes—but only when continuous ECG and the additional analytics are central to a training workflow. For everyone else, a conventional chest strap or wrist wearable may deliver the needed heart-rate data at lower complexity and cost.

Your priority Frontier X2 fit Why
Detailed ECG and trend data Strong fit The app and dashboard are built around continuous ECG and derived metrics.
Heart rate on one or two external devices Questionable value Bluetooth heart rate may be all those devices receive.
VO2-max and sleep analysis Potential fit with added cost Wareable reported these features behind a subscription during its review.
Pool training Poor fit It is not presented as a swim-focused device, and water-depth descriptions conflict.
Lowest total ownership cost Poor fit The hardware is premium-priced and some capabilities require Premium.
Screen-free zone alerts Useful fit Wareable found vibration alerts helpful for staying in a target zone.

How does it compare with a standard chest strap or wrist wearable?

The fairest comparison is not a claim that one sensor is universally more accurate; no apples-to-apples independent comparison study is available here. Instead, compare the systems across five practical dimensions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Data depth

Frontier X2 is the specialist option because it records continuous ECG and presents strain, breathing, HRV, training load, body shock and cadence in its own software. A standard chest strap is generally chosen for a dependable heart-rate feed, while a wrist wearable prioritizes convenience and a broader watch ecosystem. Choose Frontier only if you will use the additional information.

Ecosystem behavior

The X2 can feed heart rate over Bluetooth, but its richest data is not automatically replicated on every connected device. A conventional strap may be simpler when your entire workflow lives on a watch, bike computer or training platform.

Wear and activity fit

A chest strap can provide a stable training position, but it requires correct fit and regular charging. A wrist wearable is easier to put on and leave on. For swimming, verify dedicated swim support rather than assuming that an IP rating equals a pool-tracking feature.

Ownership cost

Include the hardware price and any Frontier Premium subscription. A lower-cost sensor with no recurring fee can be the better choice for athletes who need only heart rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Evidence quality

Separate manufacturer specifications from review observations. The available reviews describe usability and feature trade-offs, but they do not establish a comparative clinical-accuracy ranking.

What are the main pitfalls?

  • Assuming every device receives ECG: external equipment may receive heart rate only. Plan to use the Frontier app or dashboard for the richer signals.
  • Budgeting only for the hardware: Premium features can add a recurring charge. Confirm the current subscription before ordering.
  • Reading HRV or strain as a diagnosis: these are wellness and training indicators. They do not diagnose disease.
  • Expecting swim-tracker behavior: the device is not positioned as swim-focused, and published water-depth descriptions differ.
  • Expecting automatic Strava sync: Wareable did not have automatic syncing in its setup. Check your own account and current integration list.
  • Ignoring fit: poor skin contact or a loose strap can undermine a recording. Adjust the strap before changing software settings.

What should you check before ordering?

  1. Confirm the current Frontier X2 price, financing, promotions and regional availability on the manufacturer’s page.
  2. Decide whether you need continuous ECG and the extra metrics, or only Bluetooth heart rate.
  3. Check that your phone, watch and other equipment support the required Bluetooth connections.
  4. Price Frontier Premium for the period you expect to use sleep analysis, VO2-max estimates or other paid capabilities.
  5. Read the current water guidance if you train in wet conditions, especially if swimming is part of your routine.
  6. Review the return and warranty terms for your region. The manufacturer page listed a one-year warranty and a 14-day money-back guarantee when retrieved, but terms can change.

Frontier X2 verdict

The Frontier X2 earns its premium positioning through continuous ECG and a deeper training picture, not through being a universal replacement for every heart-rate sensor. Serious athletes who will study HRV, breathing, strain, load and ECG trends—and who appreciate vibration zone alerts—have a clear reason to consider it. Athletes who simply want heart rate on a watch, need reliable swim use or want to avoid subscriptions should spend less elsewhere.

Buy it with a clear plan for using the Frontier app and with the subscription and compatibility limits understood. The product’s own medical disclaimer should remain front of mind: its output is for fitness and general wellness, not diagnosis or treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the manufacturer’s 4.5/5 rating independently verified?

No. The product page displayed 4.5/5 from 468 verified users when retrieved, but that is a manufacturer-displayed rating rather than an independently audited score. Treat it as customer feedback presented by the seller, not as a clinical or comparative assessment.

What comes in the Frontier X2 box?

The listed package contains the Frontier X2 monitor, one elastic chest strap, a quick-start guide and a USB cable. Replacement straps and other accessories may be listed separately, so confirm what is included in the specific order you place.

What warranty and return period are listed?

The manufacturer page showed a one-year warranty and a 14-day money-back guarantee at retrieval. Because warranty coverage and return conditions can vary by region and change over time, read the current terms before payment.

Does Frontier X2 replace a doctor’s ECG or Holter monitor?

No. Fourth Frontier explicitly says the product is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose or treat disease. Anyone with symptoms or a medical monitoring plan should use clinician-directed equipment and care.
