If you liked Fragments for its first-person hotel exploration, hidden clues and uneasy atmosphere, start with Unanswered: its ordinary and UV flashlights reveal different information, making it the closest match for the appeal of discovering what a scene conceals. For environmental changes and an escape-room puzzle, choose We Went Back; for a short investigation, try Playable Archive. These are free Steam games, but some other picks offer only a first chapter or act at no charge. The store details here reflect an October 30, 2026 snapshot; availability and regional listings can change.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Free plan / price Checked
Unanswered Finding hidden clues UV flashlight reveals trails and messages Free Act 1; later acts described as future DLC Nov 2026
We Went Back Environmental puzzles Time-loop escape puzzle; developer estimate 30–50 minutes Free Nov 2026
Playable Archive A one-sitting investigation Developer estimate 30–60 minutes; no save system Free Nov 2026
Blameless Investigative exploration Developer estimate 20–60 minutes; open ending Free Nov 2026
Fingerbones Assembling a story from notes About half an hour, according to its developer; no saves Free Nov 2026
Fragments of Dread – False Haven VHS-styled psychological horror Short first-person episode with object interaction Free first episode Nov 2026
Cry of Fear A longer campaign and combat Solo campaign described as over eight hours; co-op for up to four Free standalone game Nov 2026
Dagon: by H. P. Lovecraft Voiced literary horror Developer estimate about 30 minutes Free base adaptation; optional paid DLC Nov 2026
Paper Lily – Chapter 1 A longer story with branching puzzles 2D RPG; developer estimate about four hours Free Chapter 1 Nov 2026
Poppy Playtime Factory puzzles and mascot horror GrabPack interactions in an abandoned toy factory Free Chapter 1; later chapters are paid DLC Nov 2026

“Free” describes the base game or chapter listed at the October 30, 2026 availability snapshot, not a guarantee of future access or a promise that every story is complete. The Steam page for Campus ADN’s Fragments describes Eugène investigating the LeBlanc Hotel and his sister’s disappearance, using film reels, camera-revealed clues and illusions, puzzles, and stealth around the concierge. That combination—not just a Horror tag—is the comparison point for these recommendations.

Which free Steam horror games are closest to Fragments?

Unanswered, We Went Back and Playable Archive are the strongest first-person fits, each preserving a different part of Fragments: uncovering hidden information, inspecting changing spaces or investigating a mystery. None of the cited store descriptions establishes a duplicate of Fragments’ camera mechanic.

1. Unanswered — closest if you liked revealing hidden clues

Unanswered on Steam is a free first-person psychological-horror game from WhiteRoot Studio. Its ordinary and UV flashlights expose different things: the UV light reveals concealed trails and messages. You search for tools and keys, operate fuse boxes and avoid entities, so its play loop keeps investigation and danger together rather than making combat the main attraction.

  • 【Excellence Customer Support】If you experience any issues or cable failure, simply reach out to our dedicated customer service team. We provide a prompt response within 18 hours, providing you with the necessary technical support to resolve any concerns.

The important limitation is scope: the free base game is Act 1, while later acts are described as future DLC. Treat it as a free opening act, not as a complete free saga. Steam’s developer warning mentions trauma, implied suicide, blood, corpses and ritual violence. Its stated minimum requirements are 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 and 16 GB of RAM, so it is not a safe assumption for every older PC.

2. We Went Back — best for noticing changes in a room

Dead Thread Games’ free first-person game places the player in a space-station time loop. Its main appeal is close observation: the surroundings shift, and the player must identify what has changed while solving an escape-room-style puzzle. That makes it a good fit if looking carefully for clues was the satisfying part of Fragments, even though it has neither the hotel setting nor the camera-and-film-reel premise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The developer estimates a 30–50-minute play session. That is an estimate from the game’s listing, not a guaranteed completion time; a player who gets stuck may take longer. The compact loop suits someone looking for a focused puzzle rather than a long campaign.

3. Playable Archive — best for a contained investigation

Released October 26, 2026, by DarkStone Digital and DreadXP, Playable Archive is a free first-person investigation involving an archive and mysterious material connected to a New England home. Its premise makes it a natural choice when the attraction is piecing together what happened, rather than chasing a particular puzzle mechanic.

The developer lists a 30–60-minute duration and no save system, and recommends completing it in one sitting. Plan accordingly before starting. Its listing flags violence, murder and occult references. The short format makes it a contained experience; it does not establish that every question raised by the mystery is answered.

Which games are best for puzzles, notes or a short story?

Blameless puts investigative exploration and puzzle solutions first, while Fingerbones makes scattered written evidence and atmosphere do more of the storytelling. Fragments of Dread – False Haven is a separate, similarly named episode with VHS-inspired presentation.

4. Blameless — investigate and escape

Blameless is a free 3D story-and-puzzle adventure set in an unfinished house. Its investigative exploration and puzzles with alternative solutions give it a useful overlap with Fragments without suggesting that the games share a setting or camera gimmick. The developer calls it a full title with an open ending and estimates a 20–60-minute playtime.

The phrase “full title” matters when comparing short free games: the developer distinguishes it from an unfinished episode, but also describes the ending as open. Choose it for a compact puzzle adventure, not on the assumption that an open ending promises a neatly resolved story.

5. Fingerbones — follow notes to uncover the story

David Szymanski’s free first-person horror is most suited to players who enjoy reconstructing a disturbing narrative from notes. Atmosphere and changing music help shape the experience, but it is much less focused on active puzzles and stealth than Fragments. The connection is the gradual discovery of a story, not a similar set of actions.

The developer describes a typical sitting as about half an hour. There is no save system, and the game quits automatically when complete, so start when you can finish without needing to preserve a mid-game session.

6. Fragments of Dread – False Haven — a namesake, not the same game

Fragments of Dread – False Haven is a separate free first-person psychological-horror episode from Domnaier. It follows a boy at his grandmother’s house and uses VHS-inspired visuals, atmospheric sound, and object and puzzle interaction. It is a reasonable bonus if you want another short, eerie first-person game, but its title does not make it a sequel, edition or companion to Campus ADN’s Fragments.

The available description identifies it as the first episode. Do not assume that later episodes, if listed, are free based on the status of this one.

What if I want a longer campaign or a different kind of horror?

For more time, Cry of Fear adds combat and hostile encounters; for a short, voiced story, Dagon trades puzzles for literary atmosphere. Paper Lily and Poppy Playtime are also free starting points, but their formats or chapter limits make them looser matches.

7. Cry of Fear — a much longer, combat-heavy departure

Cry of Fear is a free standalone psychological survival-horror game; it does not require buying Half-Life. Team Psykskallar describes its solo campaign as over eight hours and lists a separate cooperative campaign for up to four players. Those are developer-described campaign details, not measured completion statistics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expect a substantial change in emphasis: combat and hostile encounters are central, making it a weaker match for Fragments’ clue-and-camera structure. Its listing includes older operating-system specifications, but Steam also states that the current client requires Windows 10 or later. Readers considering an older computer should distinguish the game’s listed requirements from the current Steam client requirement.

8. Dagon: by H. P. Lovecraft — choose narration over puzzles

Bit Golem’s free, voiced 3D adaptation of Lovecraft’s short story is estimated by its developer at about 30 minutes. It is a compact way to experience a literary horror story, not a substitute for a first-person investigation or escape puzzle. Optional paid DLC and additional stories appear alongside the free base adaptation, so check which item you are selecting before installing or purchasing anything.

9. Paper Lily – Chapter 1 — longer psychological-puzzle play in 2D

Paper Lily – Chapter 1 is a free, story-led 2D RPG, not a first-person 3D horror game. Developer Leef 6010 estimates about four hours and advertises multiple puzzle solutions and endings, which makes it the longer narrative-and-puzzle option in this group. The chapter label is explicit: the free offering is Chapter 1, not a claim that the whole story is free. Optional paid supporter and soundtrack items are also listed.

10. Poppy Playtime — mascot horror, not a close mechanical match

Poppy Playtime on Steam starts in an abandoned toy factory. Its GrabPack is used for puzzles and interactions, but the tone is mascot horror and toy-chase suspense rather than a hotel investigation built around revealing clues. The free Steam base game covers Chapter 1; later chapters are separate paid DLC. Pick it if that factory-and-mascot style interests you, rather than because it closely reproduces Fragments.

Which free games fit if first-person exploration is not essential?

Doki Doki Literature Club! and Welcome To The Dark Place are genre departures: one is reading-led psychological horror, and the other is text-based and auditory. They suit readers who want a different format, not players looking for a camera, hotel or first-person puzzle loop.

Doki Doki Literature Club! — reading-led psychological horror

The original game is free and reading-led; it is not a first-person investigation. Team Salvato explicitly warns readers not to interpret its cute art as an indication that it is suitable for children. That distinction is especially important if you are choosing a game for a younger player based only on its visual presentation.

Welcome To The Dark Place — text and sound instead of exploration

Zeekerss describes Welcome To The Dark Place as “a text-based, auditory nightmare.” It is a format shift away from exploring rooms and solving visual puzzles, and its developer warns about descriptions of self-harm. Consider it only if text-and-audio horror is what you want.

How should I choose the right game after Fragments?

Match the next game to the specific part of Fragments you want more of. Free availability alone does not tell you whether a game has the same mechanics, a complete story, or the same session length.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

  • For hidden information: Choose Unanswered for its ordinary and UV flashlight clues, while keeping in mind that the free scope is Act 1.
  • For environmental observation: Choose We Went Back if noticing changes and solving a room-based escape puzzle are the priority.
  • For a mystery in one sitting: Pick Playable Archive, but allow an uninterrupted 30–60 minutes because it has no save system.
  • For puzzle-solving and investigation: Try Blameless; for a story assembled from evidence, try Fingerbones.
  • For a longer campaign: Choose Cry of Fear only if you also want more combat and hostile encounters.
  • For a different format: Paper Lily is 2D and chapter-based, Dagon is voiced literary horror, and Welcome To The Dark Place is text-and-audio horror.

Content warnings and computer requirements vary substantially. In particular, read the Steam developer warnings for games that mention trauma, suicide, violence, murder, occult material or self-harm, and verify current store availability and system requirements in your region before downloading.

How were these recommendations selected?

“Best” here means best fit for a reader preference, not a tested ranking. The order prioritizes overlap with Fragments’ first-person exploration, concealed information, puzzles and unsettling investigation; later entries are included for a distinct but relevant reason, such as a longer campaign, voiced literary horror or another free opening chapter.

Campus ADN’s Fragments listing showed 11 positive reviews out of 11 when checked October 30, 2026. That is a very small launch sample, not a reliable basis for a settled quality ranking, so the recommendations above are organized by the play style a reader may want rather than by review count.
