Four Android Brands That Often Offer Shorter or Unclear Update Support

There is no defensible, universal league table of the “four worst” Android brands for software support. Update promises change by model, price tier, launch date and market. A qualified shortlist of brands that require the closest checking is Motorola, Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO: Motorola has reported differences between premium and budget phones, while Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO generally publish a limited security baseline with model-dependent Android-version support.

Before buying any handset, check two separate figures for the exact model: how many major Android upgrades are promised, and how long security patches will continue. A phone can stop receiving new Android versions yet still receive security fixes, or have an apparently long support period that applies only to a premium model.

What does “worst software support” mean on Android?

“Worst” should mean shorter or less predictable support when compared with phones in the same price class, not that every device from a brand is unsupported. Android manufacturers make two different commitments, and combining them into one “years of updates” number hides important differences.

Android OS upgrades

An OS upgrade is a major Android release, such as moving from Android 14 to Android 15. It can change system behavior, add features and alter app compatibility. The promised count normally refers to major-version upgrades after launch, although companies do not always define whether the launch version itself is included.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Security updates

Security updates patch vulnerabilities in Android and device components. They may arrive monthly, quarterly or on another schedule, and they can continue after major OS upgrades end. A phone with two Android upgrades and four years of security patches is therefore different from one with four upgrades but only three years of patches.

Why the support clock matters

Some policies start counting from a phone’s first shipment rather than the day you buy it. A handset that sits in a warehouse for a year can consequently have less remaining support than a newly launched model with the same advertised duration. Region, carrier certification and component availability can also affect delivery timing.

Which four Android brands belong on a qualified shortlist?

The table describes patterns reported in comparative policy coverage and official documentation. It is not a measured ranking of identical current phones; each row requires a model-level check before purchase.

Brand What the evidence establishes OS-upgrade commitment Security-support commitment Where uncertainty is greatest
Motorola Support varies substantially by tier; selected models have longer promises. Flagships generally received two; budget phones often one. Exact model terms control. Flagships generally two or sometimes three years; budget phones often two years. Entry-level and older budget models.
Xiaomi Official FAQ covers Xiaomi smartphones and gives a general security baseline. No single count is promised for every model; product-line terms differ. Typically at least two years after a model’s first shipment; some models may receive three years or longer. Exact model, launch date and line.
Redmi Covered by the same official Xiaomi support FAQ, but individual Redmi models can have different policies. Model-dependent; no universal count established. Typically at least two years after first shipment, with longer exceptions possible. Budget tiers and regional variants.
POCO Part of Xiaomi’s support documentation, while comparative reporting has found its upgrade commitments unclear. No reliable brand-wide number; verify the handset’s page or announcement. At least two years is the general Xiaomi statement; some devices may exceed it. Upgrade count, cadence and market-specific terms.

These four names are grouped because they are the brands most likely to be encountered under a shorter or less transparent policy. Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO are related, but a statement about one model cannot automatically be transferred to another. The available evidence does not support declaring one of them the single worst brand.

How long does Motorola software support last?

Motorola is best described as inconsistent rather than uniformly poor. Comparative policy reporting found a clear gap between its flagship and budget ranges.

Flagship phones

Motorola flagships generally received two major Android upgrades and two, or sometimes three, years of security patches in the reported comparisons. Those figures describe a broad practice, not a guarantee for every current flagship. A particular launch may carry a longer promise, so the manufacturer’s announcement for that model takes precedence.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Budget phones

Budget Motorola phones often received one major Android upgrade and two years of security patches. Because the security period can be measured from first shipment, a discounted phone sold late in its life may have considerably less remaining coverage than the headline duration suggests.

How to evaluate a Motorola listing

Look for an explicit number of Android-version upgrades and an end date or duration for security patches. If a retailer says only “regular updates,” treat the policy as unverified. Compare the launch date with the promised security term, and check whether the listing is for the same regional model number used in Motorola’s support pages.

How long will Xiaomi phones usually get software and security patches?

Xiaomi’s official Product Support Policy Overview says security updates are typically maintained for at least two years after the first shipment of a particular device model. It also notes that some models may receive three years or longer. This is a baseline, not a promise that every Xiaomi phone receives exactly two years.

Android-version upgrades are separate

The official FAQ does not provide one Android-upgrade count for every Xiaomi handset. Comparative reporting describes support as differing by product line, which means a premium Xiaomi model and an entry-level model can have materially different upgrade paths. Do not infer the OS-upgrade count from the security duration.

What the two-year wording means

“At least two years after first shipment” ties the clock to the model’s initial release, not your purchase date. A phone launched in one country months before it reaches another can therefore have different remaining support than a buyer expects. Xiaomi also reserves the possibility of longer support for selected models, so the exact product notice is decisive.

Are Redmi and POCO support policies the same as Xiaomi’s?

Redmi and POCO appear in Xiaomi’s official support FAQ, but that does not make their update schedules identical. Treat the two-year security statement as a general floor and verify each phone’s Android-upgrade and patch terms separately.

Redmi

Redmi’s broad range spans inexpensive phones and higher-priced models. The official Xiaomi statement covers Redmi smartphones, yet it does not publish one universal Android-version count. Budget Redmi devices therefore need the same scrutiny as other entry-level phones: identify the first-shipment date, promised security end date and number of major upgrades.

POCO

Comparative policy coverage has described POCO’s upgrade commitments as unclear. That uncertainty is itself a buying risk: if a product page states a security period but does not state Android-version upgrades, you cannot safely assume a particular number. Keep a copy of the launch announcement or support page because wording can differ by market.

Why sub-brand assumptions fail

Shared software foundations do not guarantee shared support. Components, sales channels and launch timing can differ, and manufacturers may set separate terms for a premium line, a gaming-oriented model or an entry-level phone. Evaluate the exact model identifier rather than relying on the logo on the back.

Why isn’t ASUS a firm fourth-place ranking?

Comparative coverage characterizes ASUS commitments as weaker than those of leading manufacturers, making it a plausible candidate when readers ask about short support. However, the available evidence does not provide a current, model-by-model ASUS policy that can be compared fairly with the Motorola and Xiaomi-family figures.

That limitation matters because a brand-level label can be wrong for a newly launched premium phone or a particular market. ASUS should be added to a “worst” list only when the specific handset’s official upgrade count and security end date are documented alongside comparable phones. Until then, describing it as a candidate requiring verification is more accurate than assigning it a fixed rank.

How do these policies compare with longer-support Android phones?

Support has improved for some newer premium devices, so a short policy should not be treated as an industry-wide norm. Samsung’s Knox documentation says Galaxy S24 devices began receiving seven years of support and security patches, a commitment far longer than the two-year security baselines and one- or two-upgrade patterns described above.

Which?’s comparison also reports a wide spread among manufacturers and tiers. Premium and recently launched models can receive substantially longer coverage than budget phones from the same company. Comparing a low-cost Motorola or Redmi phone with a flagship from another manufacturer without adjusting for tier produces a misleading result.

How do I check a phone’s real support before buying?

Use this sequence for any Android handset, especially a discounted or refurbished model.

  1. Record the exact model and region. Capture the full model name, storage version and regional or carrier variant. Similar names can hide different release dates and policies.
  2. Find the official support statement. Look for a manufacturer page or launch announcement that states major Android upgrades and security-patch duration. “Software updates available” is not a duration.
  3. Separate the two figures. Write down the promised number of Android-version upgrades and the security-support period in separate fields. If either figure is not stated, mark it as unknown rather than guessing.
  4. Identify the support start point. Check whether the clock begins at first shipment, first sale or another date. Use the earliest applicable date when estimating remaining coverage.
  5. Check cadence and delivery conditions. Determine whether patches are monthly, quarterly or unspecified, and whether carrier or regional approval can delay them. A long term with irregular delivery may not meet the needs of a security-sensitive user.
  6. Save evidence. Keep a PDF or screenshot of the policy and the model number at purchase. Terms can change, and the record helps when a retailer’s description is vague.

What happens when Android support ends?

When major upgrades stop, the phone can continue to work and run existing apps. Over time, however, apps may require a newer Android API level, banking services may impose stricter security checks, and unpatched vulnerabilities remain unresolved.

When security patches end, reduce exposure rather than assuming the device is safe indefinitely. Install apps only from trusted stores, remove unused accounts, use a strong screen lock and avoid sensitive transactions on an unsupported phone. These steps reduce risk but do not replace vendor patches; replacing the handset is the only way to restore official coverage.

Is a short update policy always a deal breaker?

Not necessarily. A low-cost phone used for calls, messaging and media may meet your needs if its remaining security term is clear and long enough for your planned ownership. The same policy is a poor fit for someone who keeps a phone for five years, handles work data or needs guaranteed compatibility with future apps.

Choose according to the period you will actually use the device. If you expect four years of ownership, a model with only two years of security support leaves a substantial unsupported interval; paying more for a longer commitment can be cheaper than replacing the phone early. Also consider repairability, battery replacement and update delivery reliability, because support duration is only one part of the phone’s usable life.

What is the practical verdict on these four brands?

Motorola, Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO deserve extra scrutiny because their reported or published commitments can be shorter, less uniform or less explicit than the longest industry promises. Motorola’s main warning sign is tier variation, while Xiaomi-family phones generally offer a two-year-or-more security baseline with Android-upgrade counts that depend on the model. None can be labeled universally worst without specifying the handset, launch date and market.

Use the exact model’s written policy as the deciding evidence. If the seller cannot provide both an Android-upgrade count and a security-support end point, treat the phone as an uncertain-support purchase, regardless of the brand name.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can security patches continue after Android upgrades stop?

Yes. Manufacturers can keep issuing vulnerability fixes after a phone reaches its final major Android version. Delivery may be less frequent than monthly, and carrier approval can delay a patch, so check the device’s actual patch level rather than assuming the policy guarantees a fixed schedule.

Does buying a refurbished phone reset its update-support period?

No. Support is normally tied to the model’s original release or first-shipment date, not the date of resale. A refurbished handset can therefore have only a fraction of its advertised coverage remaining.

Do carrier versions receive the same updates as unlocked versions?

Not always. Carriers may test and approve firmware on their own timetable, and some regional variants have different component software. Verify the exact model number and network version before treating a manufacturer’s general policy as applicable.

How can I see my current Android security-patch date?

On most recent Android versions, open Settings, choose About phone or Security and privacy, then look for Android security update. The menu name varies by manufacturer; the displayed month is the patch level already installed, not the promised end date.
