Stay away from the object, keep other people and pets away, and do not touch or move it. If anyone is injured, there is a fire, or a building may be unsafe, contact local emergency services. Otherwise, report the find to local authorities and follow their instructions. A fragment’s appearance cannot confirm where it came from, and safe identification is a job for specialists.
What should I do first?
Put distance between yourself and the object. Do not pick it up, turn it over, wash it, bag it, cut it, ship it, or throw it away. Keep children, pets, visitors, and anyone who is curious from approaching. If you can do so without going closer, note what you can see and tell local authorities what happened.

Use local emergency services if there is an immediate danger: an injury, smoke or fire, a suspected gas or chemical hazard, or damage that may have made a structure unsafe. If there is no apparent emergency, contact local authorities for direction. There is no universal homeowner debris hotline established by the sources for this guidance; do not delay reporting while trying to find a national or company-specific number.
NASA’s 2015 notice about the expected reentry of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) spacecraft said, “Any sightings of suspected TRMM debris should be reported to local authorities.” That advice was about TRMM, not a universal hotline or a declaration that every unknown object is space debris. It does, however, support the practical first step: report a suspected find locally rather than investigating it yourself. NASA’s TRMM notice also warned that fragments could have sharp edges. Its statement that expected TRMM pieces were not toxic applies to that specific spacecraft, not to an unidentified object.

Should I touch it?
No. Treat an unknown fragment as potentially hazardous until responders or qualified specialists say otherwise. A piece may have sharp edges, and you cannot determine its materials or risks reliably from its appearance. Do not assume it is harmless because it looks like ordinary metal, is cool, or has no visible warning label.
NASA’s TRMM notice cautioned about sharp edges even while making a mission-specific assessment about toxicity. That distinction matters: the assessment of one spacecraft’s expected fragments cannot be applied to an object of unknown origin. International rules also explicitly contemplate that recovered space objects may be hazardous. If the object is in a place where someone could stumble on it, keep people out of the area from a safe position and let responders decide what precautions are appropriate.
Do not approach just to read a serial number, check for a logo, or take a close-up photograph. Do not use gloves or tools as a reason to handle it. Ordinary precautions do not establish that the object is safe, and moving it could create additional risk or complicate identification.
Who do I call?
For immediate danger, call the emergency service number used in your location. If there is no immediate threat, contact local authorities and explain that you found an unidentified object that may be space debris. Ask what they want you to do next; do not presume that NASA, an aircraft or spacecraft operator, or a national agency is the right first contact for every find.

Give a clear, factual description: where the object is, when you noticed it, what it looks like from where you are, and whether you see smoke, fire, damage, or anyone injured. Say when you are uncertain. “I found an unidentified metal-looking object” is more useful and accurate than declaring it a spacecraft part without evidence.
There is an important difference between a homeowner reporting a possible hazard and an operator’s formal mishap responsibilities. The Federal Aviation Administration describes licensed operators’ mishap processes, including emergency response and evidence preservation. Those operator requirements do not make a homeowner responsible for filing an operator’s FAA report. Report locally, preserve distance, and let authorities determine whether an operator or other specialist should be involved. The FAA’s mishap information explains the operator context.

What information should I record?
From a safe location, write down the time and precise location where you noticed the object. Describe visible characteristics without touching it: approximate size if you can judge it from a distance, shape, color, and whether it appears broken or embedded in something. Note any visible smoke, fire, damage, or other apparent hazard. These observations can help responders, but they are not an official homeowner checklist or proof of origin.
- Keep your distance. Do not approach to improve a view or find identifying marks.
- Take photographs only if safe. A photo from your current position is optional; do not move closer or put yourself at risk for a better image.
- Keep notes separate from guesses. Record what you saw and when, and label any interpretation as uncertain.
- Follow responder instructions. Do not collect, package, clean, or discard anything unless authorities direct you.
This approach is practical guidance based on evidence-preservation principles and examples of specialist identification, not a claim that a homeowner has a prescribed federal reporting form. The FAA discusses preserving evidence in operator mishap processes; the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) includes recovery and identification information in its recovered-object framework; and NASA’s analysis of a Florida find illustrates why specialists need to examine an object. None of those points is a reason to handle the item yourself.

How can I tell whether it is space debris?
You usually cannot confirm that from a photograph, a burn mark, a rumor about a recent reentry, or a resemblance to a rocket part. Until it has been assessed, describe it as suspected or unidentified debris. Let specialists compare it with known hardware and, where appropriate, analyze its materials.
NASA’s investigation of an object found at a home in Naples, Florida, shows why visual guesses are not enough. NASA worked with the homeowner to collect the object, compared it with known hardware, and performed materials analysis before identifying it. The object was traced to a stanchion released from the International Space Station. NASA reported that the identified stanchion was made of Inconel and measured 1.6 pounds, 4 inches high, and 1.6 inches in diameter. Those are details of that confirmed object, not a size, weight, or material test for other suspected debris. NASA’s account of the analysis describes the identification process.
NASA says most material does not survive reentry, but surviving material can pose a risk to people and property. “Most” is not “all,” and older general reassurance should not be treated as proof that a particular object is harmless. Conversely, finding an unusual object does not prove it came from orbit. Do not label it radioactive, toxic, safe, or space-related without evidence. Also, a speed figure for an object in orbit does not tell you how fast a fragment was moving when it reached the ground.
What if it damaged my home?
Put people’s safety first. If impact damage may have weakened a wall, roof, floor, or other part of the building, move away from the affected area if you can do so safely and tell emergency responders about the concern. Do not enter an unsafe area or begin repairs before responders have assessed and cleared the scene.

From a safe place, make a separate record of visible damage and its location. You may photograph damage if doing so requires no approach to the object and does not put you in an unsafe area. Keep your observations distinct from conclusions about what caused the damage. NASA confirmed that a fragment struck a home in Naples, Florida, on March 8, 2024; that incident establishes that property impact can happen, but it does not identify the cause of another event.
After the immediate response, contact your homeowners insurer and ask what information it needs. Coverage depends on the terms of the individual policy and the facts of the incident, so do not assume that a space-related cause guarantees payment—or that a treaty automatically gives a homeowner a direct claim. The Liability Convention addresses responsibility of launching states and claims between states, subject to its provisions and exceptions. It is not an instant individual compensation process or a promise of insurance coverage. Keep records and seek appropriate advice about your particular situation. Arrange repairs only after the scene is cleared and the damage has been assessed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan I keep or sell the object?
Do not treat finding a fragment as permission to keep, sell, or discard it. Article VIII of the Outer Space Treaty says ownership of launched objects and their component parts is not affected by their return to Earth. Landing on private property does not, by itself, establish that a finder owns the object.
The Rescue Agreement addresses state notification, recovery, and return of space objects, including potentially hazardous objects. Those provisions concern state responsibilities; they are not instructions for a homeowner to notify the United Nations personally. Leave decisions about recovery, custody, and return to the relevant authorities and states. NASA’s treaty text and history page provides the text of the Outer Space Treaty, and UNOOSA’s Rescue Agreement page explains the related agreement.

Which facts change what I should do?
Four distinctions help keep the response proportionate without guessing at the object’s origin:
- Immediate danger or no apparent danger: injury, fire, or a potentially unsafe structure calls for emergency response; otherwise, start with local authorities for instructions.
- Suspected or professionally identified: a resemblance is not confirmation. Authorities can determine whether a specialist, operator, or launching authority should be involved.
- No visible damage or documented damage: property and insurance questions become relevant if there is damage, but coverage and responsibility are not automatic.
- Finder, operator, or state: a homeowner’s role is to report and avoid handling; operator mishap duties and state treaty duties are separate responsibilities.
A 2023 FAA report stated that fewer than 90 reentry events with recovered debris had occurred since 1960. That is a figure from the report’s publication date, not a count through 2026, and it does not change the immediate advice for an object found today. The FAA’s September 2023 report gives the dated figure and its context.

Should I call NASA directly about a suspected fragment?
Start with local authorities, especially if there is any safety concern. They can advise whether a specialist or agency should be brought in; the sources here do not establish a universal NASA debris hotline for homeowners.
Do I have to notify the United Nations if I find a piece?
The Rescue Agreement describes duties involving states, including notification and recovery, rather than creating a personal UN reporting duty for a finder. Report the discovery locally and follow the instructions you receive.
Does finding debris mean I can make a claim against a space agency?
Not automatically. International liability rules concern launching-state responsibility and state-to-state claims, while an individual homeowner’s options depend on the incident facts and applicable insurance or legal advice.
