If a game wiki contains a clear, verifiable mistake, correct the smallest affected passage when the page allows editing. If the claim is disputed, version-dependent, uncertain, or the page is protected, use its Talk or Discussion page and provide the evidence instead. First confirm the game version and the wiki’s own sourcing rules; then choose an edit, a discussion, or a carefully reviewed undo. This approach fixes the information without creating an edit war or replacing one unsupported claim with another.
A wrong number in an item table, an outdated mechanic, a misleading image caption, and a vandalized paragraph do not all need the same response. The safest workflow is to identify the exact claim, establish what the game actually says for the relevant version, check the target wiki’s rules, and use the least disruptive action that the evidence supports.

What should you check before correcting a game-wiki page?
Verify the claim and its version before changing anything. A page can be accurate for an older release, a demo, a preview build, a particular platform, or a special game mode even when it looks wrong in the current release.
- Locate the precise problem. Copy the sentence, table cell, statistic, image caption, link, or section heading that appears wrong. A specific target prevents you from rewriting surrounding material that may still be correct.
- Record the game context. Note the game version or patch, platform, edition, language, mode, and whether the information concerns a live release, beta, demo, or historical build. If the wiki uses version templates, inspect them before editing.
- Separate fact from interpretation. A displayed damage value or an official patch note is different from an inference about how a mechanic works. Do not convert a theory, player report, or unconfirmed datamine into a factual statement.
- Check the wiki’s local rules. Read its editing, citation, and dispute guidance before contributing. Rules vary: one wiki may accept in-game confirmation, while another may require an external citation or a specific citation format. The Minecraft Wiki’s rules, for example, describe verifiability and prohibit speculation, but those rules are an example rather than a universal standard for every game wiki (Minecraft Wiki rules).
- Gather an acceptable source. Depending on the wiki, this might be an in-game screen, an official manual or patch note, a developer announcement, or a reliable published source. Keep the source’s date and version with your notes so another editor can reproduce the reasoning.
Do not assume that a search snippet, a forum comment, or a remembered value is enough. If the evidence does not establish the correction, report the uncertainty rather than presenting a guess as a fact.

How do you decide between editing and reporting an error?
Use a direct edit for a small, obvious, well-supported correction. Use the article’s discussion page when the change is contested, interpretation-heavy, consequential, or unsupported by a source you can confidently apply. Your editing permission also matters.
| Situation | Best route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Typo, broken link, or plainly incorrect value confirmed by the current game or an accepted source | Edit the relevant text | A focused change is faster and easier to review. |
| Different sources disagree, or the mechanic depends on a patch, mode, or platform | Talk/Discussion page first | Editors can resolve the version and evidence question before the article changes. |
| You are unsure whether your interpretation is correct | Report the claim and ask for guidance | Discussion avoids turning uncertainty into a published assertion. |
| The page is protected or the wiki limits your account | Talk/Discussion page or the wiki’s authorized-editor channel | Only an editor with the required permission can publish the change. |
| A recent edit is vandalism or clearly damaging and the correct earlier text is visible in history | Inspect the diff, then use Undo if appropriate | Undo can remove one edit while preserving later constructive work. |
This is a decision framework, not a substitute for local policy. Some communities ask contributors to discuss even apparently simple changes, while others encourage routine maintenance edits.

How do you correct a clear error directly?
Make the smallest change that the evidence supports, review it, explain it, and then publish. MediaWiki documents both visual and source editing, including preview and edit summaries, in its Help:Editing pages guide.
- Open the page and choose Edit or Edit source. The label depends on the wiki and skin. Visual editing presents formatted content; source editing exposes wikitext, templates, references, and table markup.
- Change only the offending material. Replace the incorrect number, sentence, caption, or URL. Preserve templates, references, categories, formatting, and version labels unless the evidence shows that they also need correction.
- Keep the wording precise. State the confirmed behavior and its conditions. For example, identify a patch number or platform instead of writing a broad sentence that is only true in one release.
- Use the page’s citation method. Add an inline reference, a source note, or the format required by that wiki. Do not add a citation that does not actually support the revised claim.
- Preview or review the change. Check table alignment, templates, links, footnotes, line breaks, and unintended edits elsewhere on the page. If the wiki offers a visual diff or change-review screen, read it line by line.
- Write an informative edit summary. A useful summary names the change and its basis, such as “Corrected crafting cost for version 1.4.2; confirmed in the official patch notes.” Avoid summaries such as “fixed” that leave reviewers guessing.
- Publish only after the review. Save the page, then open the rendered result and verify that the corrected passage, references, and surrounding layout display as intended.
If your change is reverted, do not immediately repeat it. Read the reverting editor’s summary, compare the versions, and move the issue to the discussion page if the disagreement is substantive.
How do you report a mistake if you cannot or should not edit the page?
Open the article’s Talk or Discussion tab and start a topic that gives editors enough information to verify the claim. MediaWiki describes every article as having its own “talk page” for questions, suggestions, and corrections (MediaWiki’s editing guide).

- Open the article’s discussion link. It may be labelled Talk, Discussion, Discuss, or appear in a page menu. If the article redirects, use the discussion page for the page that actually contains the claim.
- Start a new topic rather than burying the report. Give it a specific subject, such as “Enemy health value is outdated after patch 2.1,” instead of “Wrong information.”
- Identify the existing claim. Quote the relevant sentence or identify the table row, section, image, or link. Include the page title and, where practical, a permanent link or revision identifier.
- Propose a replacement carefully. State what you think the wording or value should be, and limit it to what your evidence establishes. If you are not sure, phrase it as a question.
- Supply context and evidence. Include the game version, platform or mode, source URL or in-game location, and the date you checked it. Explain why the source applies to the page’s stated version.
- Sign your comment. On wikitext discussion pages, four tildes (
~~~~) normally add your username and timestamp; some discussion interfaces sign automatically. Follow the target wiki’s convention. - Watch for a response. Check replies and be prepared to clarify the version or source. Keep the conversation focused on the claim rather than on the editor who wrote it.
A report is editorial advice, not a universal form. The target community may have a noticeboard, template, or dedicated error-report page; use it if its rules direct you there. Do not assume that every wiki provides the same ticket system, administrator email address, or chat server.
What should an error report contain?
A compact, reproducible report is more useful than a long complaint. Include the following fields when they apply:
- Page: exact article title and section, table row, image, or link.
- Current claim: the wording or value that appears incorrect.
- Proposed correction: replacement text or a clear description of the change.
- Game context: release, patch, platform, edition, language, mode, and whether it is a demo or historical version.
- Evidence: accepted source, citation, screenshot location, official note, or reproducible in-game observation, as permitted by local rules.
- Reason: one or two sentences explaining the contradiction or why the existing source no longer applies.
- Uncertainty: identify any part that remains unconfirmed, such as a datamined value or a conflict between editions.
For example:
Page: “Iron Pickaxe,” durability table
Current claim: Durability is 250.
Proposed correction: 200 for the console edition; retain 250 for the PC edition if that value is confirmed there.
Context: Console patch 3.6, normal mode.
Evidence: The edition-specific patch note and the wiki’s accepted citation format.
Reason: The table currently labels the PC value as applying to all editions.
This format lets an editor verify the report without guessing which release or interpretation you mean.
Why can’t you edit a game-wiki page?
A protected page may replace Edit with View source, or offer an explanation that only certain user groups can modify it. Protection can be temporary or indefinite and may apply because of vandalism, high traffic, or a contentious dispute. MediaWiki explains the general protection and unprotection process in Help:Protecting and unprotecting pages.
Other common reasons include a required account age or edit count, a read-only maintenance state, a blocked account, or a namespace with different permissions. Read the notice shown on the page and the wiki’s permission policy. Do not try to bypass protection by creating duplicate pages or repeatedly submitting the same edit.
When a page is protected, post the correction on its discussion page and ask an authorized editor to apply it. Include the exact revision, source, and proposed wording so the editor can make a minimal change. If the discussion page is also protected, use the community channel named by that wiki; do not assume a generic administrator contact will work.
How do you undo vandalism or a harmful previous edit?
Use history and a diff before reverting. MediaWiki defines reverting as restoring a page to an earlier version from its history (Help:Reverting), but the correct tool depends on what happened after the problematic edit.
- Open View history. Find the edit that introduced the false text, spam, deletion, or formatting damage. Read its summary and compare it with the preceding revision.
- Inspect the diff. Confirm that the change is actually harmful and identify any constructive edits made afterward. A broad revert can erase legitimate work by other contributors.
- Use Undo for one identifiable edit. Undo attempts to remove that edit while keeping later revisions. Review the resulting diff because it can fail or create conflicts when subsequent edits depend on the changed text.
- Use rollback only if you are authorized and the situation fits. Rollback is a separate, more limited tool generally available to trusted users for clear vandalism; it is not a shortcut for settling a good-faith content disagreement.
- Explain the revert. State what was removed and why, such as “Removed promotional spam link” or “Restored sourced value after vandalism.”
- Discuss disputed changes. If the edit may reflect a real disagreement, stop trading reversions and open a discussion with the relevant sources and version details.
Never revert an entire page simply because one sentence is wrong when you can repair that sentence. Smaller reversions preserve later improvements and make the history easier to understand.
- Check timestamps. Match the source date to the game release and the wiki revision. An old official guide may accurately describe an earlier build.
- Preserve historical facts. If a value changed in patch 2.0, retain the old value in the historical or versioned section when the wiki’s structure calls for it, and label the current value clearly.
- Distinguish editions and modes. Console, PC, mobile, multiplayer, hard mode, and challenge modes can have separate rules. Put the qualifier next to the claim, not in an easily missed note.
- Resolve source conflicts openly. Bring conflicting citations to the discussion page, explain what each source covers, and ask editors to agree on the page’s wording.
- Do not hide uncertainty with precise numbers. If only an approximate or unconfirmed value is available, say so or leave the field unresolved until an acceptable source appears.
Game-wiki policies often emphasize verifiability, but the precise standard is local. Recheck the target wiki’s rules before relying on an in-game observation, a data file, a developer post, or a third-party guide.
- Editing from memory: You may remember a different patch, edition, or mod. Verify the context first.
- Changing too much: A broad rewrite makes review difficult and can remove accurate details. Keep the diff focused.
- Omitting an edit summary: Reviewers cannot tell whether a change is a typo fix, a version update, or a disputed interpretation.
- Adding unsupported certainty: Do not turn a rumor, theory, or datamine into a definitive sentence.
- Ignoring templates and references: Editing rendered text without checking source markup can break transclusion, citations, or version labels.
- Reverting a disagreement: A good-faith content dispute belongs on the discussion page, not in a sequence of competing reverts.
- Assuming all wikis work alike: Labels, permissions, citation rules, and escalation paths differ by community.
- Failing to recheck the result: Open the saved page and its history to confirm that the intended passage changed and no unrelated content was lost.
What should you do after submitting a correction?
Monitor the page history and discussion thread for replies, questions, or a revert. If an editor asks for a citation or a version qualifier, answer with the relevant evidence rather than repeating the original assertion. If the correction is accepted, check that the final wording, references, tables, and version labels remain consistent across related pages.
If another editor restores the old text, compare both revisions before acting. A revert summary may reveal that your source applies to a different platform or that the wiki requires a citation you did not provide. When the issue remains unresolved, summarize the disagreement neutrally on the discussion page and let the community’s dispute process decide.
Can a correction be made without changing the article immediately?
Yes. A discussion post can document the suspected error while editors verify the evidence, and it is often the better first step for a consequential or uncertain claim. This leaves a visible record of the reasoning and avoids publishing a correction that later needs to be reversed.
Where should a broken link or incorrect image be reported?
Use the article’s discussion page unless the wiki provides a dedicated maintenance page. Identify the exact link target or image filename, explain what is broken or misleading, and suggest a replacement that meets the wiki’s licensing and sourcing rules.
Does signing a talk-page comment matter?
Signing adds your username and timestamp, which helps readers follow the conversation and contact the right participant. On wikitext pages, four tildes (~~~~) usually insert the signature; visual discussion tools may add it automatically.
How long should you wait for a wiki editor to respond?
There is no universal response time: volunteer activity varies by game and by the urgency of the issue. Keep the report visible, add new evidence in the same thread, and use an established noticeboard only when the local rules direct you there; posting duplicates across unrelated pages can slow resolution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fix a typo on a game wiki anonymously?
Some wikis permit anonymous edits, while others require an account or limit anonymous editing by namespace or protection level. The page’s edit controls and local policy determine what is allowed, so do not infer permissions from another wiki.
What if the source proving the error is inside the game?
Describe the exact menu, item tooltip, quest text, or mechanic and identify the release and platform. If the wiki accepts in-game evidence, cite that location in the edit summary or discussion; otherwise ask how the community wants it documented.
Should I create a new page for information missing from an existing article?
Usually no: first ask on the existing article’s discussion page whether the information belongs there and what sourcing structure to use. A new page can duplicate content or bypass a wiki’s notability and naming rules.
What if an editor keeps reverting a properly sourced correction?
Stop reverting back and open a focused discussion that compares the two revisions, sources, and game versions. Follow the wiki’s dispute-resolution process or request help from an authorized mediator rather than escalating through more reverts.
