Windows 8 error 0x8007045D means a storage read or write request failed. The code is the HRESULT form of Win32 ERROR_IO_DEVICE (1117, or hexadecimal 0x45D). It can come from an installer USB or DVD, the target hard disk, an external drive, a cable, a USB port, or file-system damage. It does not by itself prove that your files are corrupt or that the disk is dead.

Stop the failed operation, copy any readable irreplaceable files, then change one part of the storage path at a time. For a Windows 8 installation, test the installer media separately from the target disk. After the connection and media checks, use CHKDSK, inspect drive health, and replace or professionally image hardware that is unstable. Windows 8 support ended on 13 January 2016, and Windows 8.1 support ended on 10 January 2023, so plan a supported operating system once the computer is usable.

What does 0x8007045D mean?

Microsoft documents Win32 error 1117 (hexadecimal 0x45D) as The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. Windows often displays the HRESULT 0x8007045D; the decimal form is 2147943517. These are different representations of the same storage error, not separate Windows 8 failures.

An input/output request is any operation that reads from or writes to storage. Windows may be unable to read the next installer file, write a block to the destination disk, or keep an external device connected long enough to finish. The operating system reports the failed request, but the code does not identify which physical component caused it.

Where the error appears

  • Windows 8 setup stops while copying files, with messages such as “Windows cannot install the required files” or “We couldn’t install Windows in the location you chose.”
  • File Explorer fails while copying or moving data between a USB stick, SD card, DVD, external disk, and an internal volume.
  • Backup or system-repair-disc creation fails, sometimes near the end of the job.
  • A USB, optical disc, or secondary disk intermittently disappears or cannot be read.

Possible causes include a loose or damaged USB/SATA cable, an under-powered hub, a bad port, a failing flash drive or hard disk, scratched optical media, file-system corruption, an incomplete download, a storage driver problem, or a controller operating in PIO rather than DMA mode. A third-party real-time scanner can also intercept a backup or copy operation. Treat those as hypotheses and isolate the path instead of assuming the disk is already beyond recovery.

What should I do before trying repairs?

Protect data before performing any operation that writes extensively to a questionable disk. If the drive is readable, copy the most important files to a different physical disk first. Stop immediately if a hard disk clicks, grinds, repeatedly disconnects, or vanishes from Windows; repeated reads can make a mechanical failure worse.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Cancel the failed setup, copy, or backup job and restart the computer once.
  2. Write down which device was the source, destination, installer, or backup target. This identifies the part to test first.
  3. Disconnect unnecessary USB drives, card readers, phones, and printers while troubleshooting setup.
  4. Change only one item at a time—port, cable, hub, enclosure, flash drive, or computer—so the result is meaningful.
  5. Do not run repeated surface scans on a disk that is making unusual noises or dropping offline.

How do I fix 0x8007045D during Windows 8 setup?

Setup has two independent suspects: the installer media and the disk receiving Windows. Work through the installer path first, then test the target disk. A new flash drive that works on one computer does not prove that the target disk in the Windows 8 computer is healthy.

1. Move and simplify the installer connection

  1. Power off if necessary, remove the installer USB, and reconnect it firmly.
  2. Use a rear motherboard USB port rather than a front-panel port or hub. On older Windows 8-era systems, a USB 2.0 port can be more reliable than a USB 3.0 port during setup.
  3. Remove every other USB storage device and card reader. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, and installer connected.
  4. If the installer is on DVD, clean the disc with a soft lint-free cloth and try another disc in the drive.

If the same error appears at the same point after these changes, recreate the installer on a different flash drive. Do not keep overwriting a stick that may itself be failing. A current media-creation utility is intended for current Windows releases; it is not a guaranteed source of a Windows 8 image. To reinstall Windows 8, use an existing licensed Windows 8 or 8.1 ISO or DVD whose files you can verify. If the goal is simply to obtain a supported installation in 2026, create current Windows 10 or Windows 11 media instead, provided the computer meets that release’s requirements.

2. Separate the target disk from the media

When known-good media works elsewhere but setup still fails on this computer, the target HDD or SSD becomes the leading suspect. From the setup screen choose Repair your computer, open Command Prompt, and inspect the target volume with CHKDSK as described below. If the disk is unstable, stop and recover files rather than repeatedly restarting setup.

Some setup guides use DiskPart to erase and recreate a partition. This is destructive:

diskpart
list disk
select disk N
clean
create partition primary
format fs=ntfs quick
active
exit

Replace N only after confirming the disk number. The clean command removes the disk’s partition information and can make existing files inaccessible. Use it only when you have a verified backup and have decided to erase that disk. If setup still fails after a clean operation, the physical disk, its cable, or its controller may be failing; formatting is not a hardware repair.

How do I fix the error while copying from a USB or external drive?

Stabilize the physical connection before changing Windows settings. A copy that succeeds after moving the cable or drive to another computer points to the original port, cable, enclosure, hub, or host controller.

  1. Restart Windows 8, unplug the external device, wait several seconds, and reconnect it directly to another port.
  2. Try a different USB cable. For a portable hard disk, use a powered hub or the manufacturer’s two-plug power cable if the computer cannot supply enough current; avoid an unpowered hub during diagnosis.
  3. Copy the installer or data to the internal disk before running it. This removes a flaky USB path from the operation, although it does not repair damaged source files.
  4. If the file was downloaded, download it again from the publisher. When the publisher supplies a checksum, compare it before copying.
  5. Open Device Manager and update the entries under Disk drives and Universal Serial Bus controllers. If USB controllers appear corrupted, uninstall the controller entries and reboot; Windows 8 should redetect them.
  6. Run the Windows 8 Hardware and Devices troubleshooter with an elevated Command Prompt:
msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic

The same troubleshooter is available at Control Panel > Troubleshooting > View all > Hardware and Devices. Run CHKDSK on the affected drive letter after the connection is stable.

Retrying a large copy with Robocopy

Once the hardware remains mounted and quiet, Robocopy can retry transient failures without restarting the entire directory copy:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
robocopy source destination /E /R:3 /W:5

Replace source and destination with real paths. This command is a copy aid, not a treatment for a dying disk. If the same files fail repeatedly, preserve what is readable and investigate the source media.

How do I repair a backup or system-repair-disc failure?

For the message “System repair disc could not be created … 0x8007045D,” first test another optical disc or USB port and run the job from Safe Mode or a clean boot. A temporarily disabled third-party real-time scanner can identify software interference, but re-enable protection immediately after the test.

  1. Boot Safe Mode by pressing Windows key+R, entering msconfig, selecting the Boot tab, checking Safe boot and Minimal, then restarting.
  2. Retry the backup with unnecessary startup programs disabled. If it succeeds only in Safe Mode, investigate the conflicting service rather than leaving Safe Mode enabled.
  3. Run CHKDSK on the source and destination volumes. For a suspected damaged volume, an administrator can use chkdsk X: /r, replacing X: with the correct letter.
  4. If a backup repeatedly fails at the final stage, make a complete backup of wanted files first. Only then consider shrinking the affected volume by a few megabytes so the last cluster is moved. This is a narrow workaround for a historical end-of-volume condition, not a general cure.

How do I run CHKDSK safely on Windows 8?

Open Command Prompt (Admin) with Windows key+X, then replace X: with the affected volume. Start with the least invasive command and escalate only when the result and the drive’s behavior justify it.

Command Purpose Use and caution
chkdsk X: Reports file-system status Does not repair anything.
chkdsk X: /scan Online NTFS scan Available on Windows 8 and later; useful before scheduling downtime.
chkdsk X: /f Fixes logical file-system errors The volume must be locked; answer Y to schedule it at reboot when prompted.
chkdsk X: /r Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information Includes /f, requires a locked volume, and can take a long time on a large HDD.
chkdsk X: /f /r /x Repairs, scans sectors, and forces a dismount Use only on a stable, backed-up volume; /x includes /f.
chkdsk X: /b Rebuilds the bad-cluster list on NTFS Includes /r and is mainly useful after imaging to a replacement disk.

Microsoft describes CHKDSK as checking file-system metadata and the volume for logical and physical errors. Exit code 0 means no errors were found, 1 means errors were found and fixed, and 3 means the volume could not be checked or fixed. The system volume may schedule a scan for the next restart; do not skip it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On an SSD, an occasional check is not considered a significant concern, but repeated full-surface /r scans add unnecessary write/erase activity. CHKDSK cannot repair a bad cable, an under-powered hub, or a mechanically failing drive. If the disk is clicking or disconnecting, stop before running another scan.

Using the Windows 8 graphical disk check

  1. Open Computer or This PC.
  2. Right-click the affected drive and select Properties.
  3. Open Tools, then under Error-checking select Check now….
  4. Tick Automatically fix file system errors. Select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors only when physical damage is suspected and important data is already protected.
  5. Choose Start, or select Schedule disk check for the system volume and restart. Allow the boot-time scan to finish.

To review a completed boot scan, open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application and look for sources named Chkdsk or Wininit. Interrupting CHKDSK is not recommended, although Microsoft says canceling it should not leave the volume more corrupt than it was before the scan began.

How can I check the disk and storage drivers?

Health information and driver state help distinguish a logical repair from hardware replacement. A clean CHKDSK result does not prove that a drive will remain reliable, and a driver update cannot revive a disk with failing sectors.

Check SMART or drive health

  1. At an elevated prompt, run wmic diskdrive get status. A status other than OK deserves immediate backup and further inspection.
  2. Use a SMART viewer such as CrystalDiskInfo 9.9.3, released 11 October 2026 and listed as supporting Windows 8.0 and later. Treat Caution or Bad as a reason to copy data and replace the drive, not as an invitation to run more scans.
  3. Watch for repeated disconnects, clicking, grinding, widespread uncorrectable sectors, or a CHKDSK pass that cannot finish. These symptoms point to recovery or replacement.

Check DMA and controller entries

  1. Open Device Manager and expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
  2. Open a channel’s Properties, select Advanced Settings, and confirm that Transfer Mode is DMA if available, not PIO.
  3. Under Disk drives and Universal Serial Bus controllers, use Update driver and restart when prompted.

Windows 8’s Hardware and Devices troubleshooter can be run again after driver changes. If the error follows the same drive to another known-good cable, port, and computer, the drive or its enclosure is the likely source.

When should I replace the drive instead of repairing it?

Replace or professionally image the storage device when several warning signs stack up. CHKDSK repairs directory and allocation metadata; it cannot make an unreliable mechanism reliable.

  • The error follows the disk across known-good cables, ports, enclosures, and computers.
  • SMART reports Caution or Bad.
  • The device clicks, grinds, disconnects, or disappears from firmware and Windows.
  • CHKDSK reports many uncorrectable sectors or never completes.
  • Windows setup still fails after a newly created installer works on another computer.

For a failing internal 2.5-inch drive, remove it only after securing the data plan. A SATA-to-USB adapter or 2.5-inch USB enclosure can let another computer read the disk, but stop the transfer if the drive repeatedly disconnects or makes unusual noises. If the data is irreplaceable, a professional imaging service is safer than repeated consumer recovery attempts.

What if the error involves a DVD?

Optical media can fail even when the DVD drive itself is healthy. Try another disc in the drive to separate a scratched or badly pressed disc from a reader problem.

  1. Clean the original disc from the center outward; do not rub in circles.
  2. Try a replacement disc or copy the readable files on another computer to a known-good USB flash drive.
  3. If the disc is visibly scratched, a disc-repair kit may recover enough sectors for a one-time copy, but it is not a guaranteed restoration.

Should I stay on Windows 8 after the repair?

No. Windows 8 began on 30 October 2012 and its extended support ended on 13 January 2016. Microsoft told customers to move to Windows 8.1 to remain supported, but Windows 8.1 reached end of support on 10 January 2023.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After that date, Windows 8.1 no longer receives security updates, non-security updates, bug fixes, technical support, or online technical-content updates. Microsoft also states that it will not offer Extended Security Updates for Windows 8.1. Microsoft 365 applications are no longer supported on 8.1, and Edge 109 was the final Edge release for that operating system. Once the storage problem is controlled, check whether the computer can run a current supported Windows release; if it cannot, Microsoft’s advice is to replace it with a Windows 11-capable PC.

If the physical connections are sound and Device Manager shows outdated, missing, or corrupted storage or USB drivers, Outbyte Driver Updater is an optional shortcut. It scans more than 100 devices, installs official drivers, shows current and recommended versions, and includes driver backup, restore, and scheduled scans; it has a 2-day free trial with no credit card, followed by a subscription. It does not repair a bad cable or a mechanically failing disk, and results vary.

Frequently asked questions

Is 0x8007045D a virus?

The code itself is an I/O device error, not a malware diagnosis. Malware or security software can interfere with a copy in some cases, but the first checks should still be the storage path, device health, and file system.

Can I keep using a drive after CHKDSK fixes it?

A successful repair means CHKDSK corrected file-system issues it could identify; it does not certify the hardware. Check SMART data and maintain a current backup before trusting the disk with important files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does setup fail on one USB stick but not another?

Flash drives can contain unreadable cells or incomplete installer files even when they appear normally in Explorer. Recreating the media on a different stick tests both the storage device and the installer contents.

What does decimal error 2147943517 mean?

It is the decimal representation of hexadecimal 0x8007045D. Windows may show either form depending on the dialog or log, but both identify the same failed I/O request.

Is it safe to interrupt a CHKDSK scan?

Microsoft advises against interrupting it, especially during a repair or sector-recovery pass. If the scan is clearly stalled and the disk is failing, prioritize stopping further hardware stress and recovering readable data rather than repeatedly restarting the scan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a loose USB cable really cause 0x8007045D?

Yes. A momentary disconnect can interrupt a read or write and produce the same code as a bad sector. Replacing the cable and connecting directly to a different port is a useful low-risk isolation test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will formatting permanently fix the error?

Formatting recreates file-system structures but cannot repair failing electronics, media cells, or a damaged cable. It also destroys data, so it should only follow a verified backup and a decision to erase the volume.

Why does the error appear at the same percentage during Windows setup?

Setup may be reaching one unreadable file on the installer or one bad region on the destination disk. Test a newly created installer on another flash drive before concluding that the internal disk is responsible.

Can I run CHKDSK from the Windows 8 installation screen?

Yes. Select Repair your computer, open Command Prompt, identify the correct volume letter, and run the appropriate command. Drive letters in the recovery environment may differ from those used by the installed system.
