If OneDrive says it is unable to move a shortcut, first check the shortcut’s location in OneDrive on the web and confirm that the shared folder is still available to you. If you want to relocate a working shortcut, Microsoft supports moving it with Move to or by dragging it. If the link is obsolete, use Remove shortcut—not ordinary Delete, which can affect files inside the shared folder. Reset the sync app only when the problem extends beyond this one shortcut.

What does “Unable to move shortcut” mean?

The message means OneDrive encountered a problem while handling a shared-folder shortcut; by itself, it does not tell you whether the shortcut is stale, the move failed to sync, or the desktop client and website disagree. A shortcut is an entry in your OneDrive that points to a folder someone else shared with you. It is not the same as owning or independently storing that folder’s contents.

That distinction matters when choosing a fix. You can move the shortcut entry without moving the owner’s folder or its files. You may also lose access to the target if its owner stops sharing it. And deleting a shared-folder shortcut as if it were an ordinary local folder can put shared content at risk. Microsoft documents both moving shortcuts and removing them safely in its guide to OneDrive shared-folder shortcuts.

The exact error has appeared in user reports, but those reports do not establish one universal cause. In an August 2021 Microsoft Q&A thread, one person associated repeated errors with a target that was deleted or no longer shared. Another reported that a local move generated an error while the shortcut still appeared at its previous location on the web. Treat those as examples, not a diagnosis for your account.

How can I tell whether the shortcut moved or the sync client is out of step?

Compare the shortcut’s position on OneDrive.com with its position in File Explorer or Finder. The web view shows the location OneDrive currently recognizes for your account; the desktop client may not yet reflect the same state.

  1. Find the item named in the error. Note the shortcut’s name and whether the message appears after a particular move or whenever another item is moved.
  2. Open OneDrive on the web and select My files. Locate the named shortcut and note its folder path. Do not assume that a desktop drag successfully changed its web location.
  3. Compare the desktop location. In Windows File Explorer or Mac Finder, check whether the shortcut appears in the same folder. If the web and desktop locations differ, allow the client to sync and check again before trying a series of moves.
  4. Check the underlying folder under Shared. Look for the shared folder itself, not just the shortcut entry in My files. If it is missing, confirm with its owner or an editor that sharing is still active.

Microsoft support staff described a historical case in the 2021 Q&A thread where moving a shortcut locally produced an error even though the web location remained at the root. That observation applies to that reported case; it does not mean shortcuts are required to stay in the OneDrive root. The current Microsoft instructions say they can be moved.

How do I move a shortcut without moving the shared folder?

When the shared folder is still available and you want to relocate only its shortcut, move the shortcut from OneDrive’s web My files view. Microsoft also documents dragging the shortcut to a destination folder.

  1. Go to OneDrive on the web and open My files.
  2. Select the shared-folder shortcut you want to relocate.
  3. Choose Move to, select the destination folder, and confirm with Move. Alternatively, drag the shortcut to the destination folder.
  4. After the move, check the shortcut’s location in My files and then check File Explorer or Finder after sync.

Microsoft’s instruction is direct: “You can move a shortcut to a folder just like any other file or folder.” This describes the shortcut entry. It does not mean that you should move the owner’s shared folder or rearrange the contents as if they were your own files.

A participant in the 2021 Q&A thread reported that moving a shortcut back to its former root location stopped repeated pop-ups, although a sync error remained. That is a historical user outcome, not a guaranteed fix. If the web view still shows the old location after a local move, use the web controls to make the intended move and let the client reconcile rather than repeatedly dragging the item back and forth.

What if the shared folder is no longer available?

If the folder no longer appears in OneDrive’s Shared view, check whether its owner has stopped sharing it. Microsoft says an item whose owner stops sharing disappears from that view. To regain access, ask the owner or an editor to share the folder with you again; resetting or reinstalling the sync client cannot restore permission.

Once sharing is restored, check whether the shortcut becomes usable again. If you no longer need it, remove the shortcut rather than deleting it. One participant in the 2021 Q&A thread said removing an obsolete shortcut on the web cleared a recurring error for them. That report is a single user’s outcome, not a promise that removal will resolve every move error.

How do I remove a shortcut safely?

Use Remove shortcut when the link is unwanted, out of date, or no longer useful. Microsoft says removing it takes the entry out of your OneDrive and synced computers without affecting the owner’s shared folder or other collaborators.

  1. On the web: open My files, select the shared-folder shortcut, and choose Remove shortcut.
  2. In File Explorer, where the option is available: right-click the shared folder and choose OneDrive > Remove shortcut.
  3. Check the web and desktop views after sync to confirm the shortcut entry is gone.

Do not use the Delete key or ordinary Delete as a substitute for Remove shortcut. Microsoft specifically warns that deleting from File Explorer can delete files within the shortcut, particularly when files are open or the shortcut is expanded in the navigation pane. For the same reason, do not empty a recycle bin as a routine troubleshooting step. If you are unsure whether the selected item is a shortcut or shared content, stop and verify it on the web before deleting anything.

Could the error be about moving shared files instead?

Yes. A move involving files or folders inside shared locations is different from moving the shortcut entry. Microsoft’s guidance distinguishes moving the shortcut from moving content between shared folders; moving content can change its permissions. Its instructions also note that shared folders cannot be moved on OneDrive.com in the same way as shortcuts.

Before you move anything, identify exactly what is selected. If the item is the shared-folder shortcut in My files, the documented shortcut move applies. If it is a file or folder inside shared content, consider who owns it and who needs access after the move. Do not use a shortcut troubleshooting step to make an unplanned change to shared content or its permissions.

Should I reset OneDrive to clear the error?

Usually not as a first step. A reset is worth considering if OneDrive has persistent sync problems affecting other files or folders as well as this shortcut. It will not fix a folder that is no longer shared with you.

For Windows, Microsoft first suggests running wsreset.exe. If OneDrive still does not sync, Microsoft’s reset article gives this command:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
%localappdata%MicrosoftOneDriveonedrive.exe /reset

If Windows cannot find OneDrive at that path, use the alternate installed-app paths in Microsoft’s OneDrive reset instructions. Restart OneDrive after the reset. The command and steps here are for Windows; Mac reset steps differ, so follow Microsoft’s Mac-specific procedure rather than running a Windows command on a Mac.

Microsoft says resetting OneDrive does not lose files, but it does reset settings, disconnect sync connections, and trigger a full sync. If you previously excluded folders using selective sync, you will need to select those folders again. A reset is therefore a broader sync repair, not a shortcut relocation tool.

What is the separate .url shortcut issue?

A shared-folder shortcut that appears as an internet shortcut ending in .url and opens a webpage is a separate symptom from a generic “Unable to move shortcut” message. Microsoft’s OneDrive known-issues page, last updated April 20, 2026, describes this display behavior and says the contents can still be accessed on OneDrive.com.

If the item behaves this way, use the web view to access the folder’s contents and check Microsoft’s current OneDrive fixes and workarounds for the status of that issue. Do not assume that every move-error pop-up is caused by the .url behavior; first compare the web and desktop locations and verify that the folder is still shared.

Which fix should I try first?

Choose the action that matches the item and the symptom; avoid using deletion or reset as a catch-all remedy.

What you find Best next step What to avoid
The folder is still in Shared; you want to relocate its shortcut. Move the shortcut from My files on the web using Move to or drag it to the destination. Assuming shortcuts must stay in the OneDrive root.
The underlying folder is missing from Shared. Ask the owner or an editor to share it again. Resetting OneDrive to try to restore access.
The shortcut is obsolete or unwanted. Choose Remove shortcut on the web or, where available, in File Explorer. Using ordinary Delete on the shared folder entry.
The web and desktop locations do not match. Compare again after sync; use the web move controls if the shortcut needs a different location. Repeatedly moving the item locally without checking its web location.
Many unrelated OneDrive items also fail to sync. Follow Microsoft’s reset steps for your operating system, then restart OneDrive. Expecting a reset to restore sharing permissions.
The item is a .url file that opens a webpage. Access the folder’s contents on OneDrive.com and consult the known-issues page. Treating this distinct display issue as the proven cause of every move error.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many OneDrive shortcuts can I add?

Microsoft Support’s page, checked in 2026, says you can add up to 100 folder shortcuts from a single person’s OneDrive or Teams site, and up to 1,000 shortcuts across files and folders. For work or school, the page separately describes a 100-shortcut limit within one document library; that scope is not the same as the overall limit.

How common is the OneDrive “Unable to move shortcut” error?

Microsoft’s reviewed support material does not publish an incidence rate for this exact message. The August 2021 Q&A thread documents individual accounts and troubleshooting outcomes, not the share of OneDrive users affected.

Is the OneDrive .url shortcut problem still active?

Microsoft’s known-issues page was last updated April 20, 2026 and describes shared-folder shortcuts appearing as internet shortcuts that open a webpage. Service-issue status can change, so check that page for the current status rather than treating the dated description as a live outage confirmation.
