Start with one repeatable guard or parry attempt in a safe, preferably offline encounter. If every action appears late, investigate the PC-to-display path. If one press disappears or arrives inconsistently, investigate the controller, cable, USB port, or mappings. If the game clearly receives the press but the defensive move fails, learn that game’s timing rule before changing hardware. Local input lag can happen entirely offline and is different from online network lag.

Work from free, reversible checks toward purchases: verify refresh rate and TV Game Mode, compare V-Sync and supported variable refresh settings, test the game’s NVIDIA Reflex option when available, compare a known-good input device, and repeat the same attack cue after each change. This process cannot guarantee every parry, but it identifies whether the problem is display delay, unstable frame delivery, a missing input, or an incorrect timing expectation.

What should I establish before changing anything?

You need a repeatable test, a stable encounter, and a way to describe the failure precisely. Do not begin by buying a monitor or assuming that a missed deflect proves the PC is slow.

  1. Choose one repeatable encounter. Use the same enemy attack, training mode, or safe offline area. Online matches add network variables that can obscure a local timing problem.
  2. Test a simple action first. Open a menu, move through a predictable interface, or trigger an ordinary attack. Compare its response with guard or parry attempts.
  3. Classify the symptom. Note whether all actions look late, only one button fails, the action happens after a delay, or the character guards but does not deflect.
  4. Record one baseline. Write down the display mode, refresh rate, V-Sync or VRR state, frame-rate behavior, input device, and connection type. Change one variable at a time.
  5. Repeat the identical cue. After every change, attempt the same attack at least several times in the same conditions. A different enemy, camera angle, or attack animation is not a controlled comparison.
  6. Separate offline and online symptoms. A consistent offline delay points toward the local input-to-display chain or game rules. A problem that appears only online may involve networking, but an online symptom does not prove that local input is healthy.

How can I tell input lag from a missed input or a wrong parry?

Look at what the game does immediately after the press. The distinction determines which part of the system to troubleshoot.

What you observe Most useful interpretation Next check
Menus, movement, attacks, and defense all appear consistently late A presentation or rendering-path delay is plausible Refresh rate, TV processing, V-Sync or VRR, frame stability, and display connection
Only one button press disappears or works intermittently Input hardware, wireless reliability, USB behavior, or a mapping conflict is plausible Known-good controller or keyboard, another USB port, cable, power, and bindings
The character guards, but the attack is not deflected The press may have arrived, but the game’s timing rule was not met Read the game’s guard, deflect, hold, release, and buffering rules
The issue appears only in online play Network timing may be involved; local lag is not established Repeat the same test offline before changing hardware
Response changes when frame rate becomes unstable Frame pacing or a saturated GPU may be affecting perceived latency Lower demanding settings, compare a stable cap, and inspect frame-time behavior

This classification is not a diagnosis by itself. It tells you where to make the next reversible change instead of stacking unrelated tweaks.

How do I fix display-related input delay for free?

Confirm that the computer and display are using the mode you intended before considering new hardware. A monitor’s advertised pixel response time is not a measurement of total input lag.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the selected refresh rate

In Windows, open the display’s advanced settings and confirm that the active refresh rate is the display’s intended gaming mode, not a lower default. Then check the game’s own resolution and display settings. A high-refresh panel running at a lower operating-system rate cannot provide the benefit of its faster mode.

Enable Game Mode on a television

Televisions often apply motion interpolation, noise reduction, scaling, or other picture processing. Game Mode normally bypasses much of that processing and is the first setting to check when a TV feels delayed. Turn off unnecessary enhancement modes while diagnosing, then re-enable only a feature you can confirm does not change response.

Prefer a direct wired display path

If the current setup uses wireless display transmission, compare it with a direct wired connection. The comparison is about removing an extra transport and processing stage; it does not prove that every wireless display is slower in every configuration.

Know what a display purchase can and cannot solve

Display input lag is a hardware characteristic that settings cannot completely erase. If the existing screen remains the confirmed bottleneck, compare independently measured input-lag results, supported variable-refresh range, resolution, refresh rate, and connection compatibility. Do not select a screen solely because its advertised pixel response time is small. A gaming monitor with variable refresh rate may address a verified display constraint, but it cannot repair a bad binding, dropped button, or incorrect parry timing.

Should I disable V-Sync, use VRR, or cap the frame rate?

There is no universal winner. V-Sync, variable refresh rate, frame caps, and tearing form a trade-off that depends on the game, GPU, display, and target frame rate.

Use V-Sync off as a diagnostic

Toggle in-game V-Sync off and repeat the same encounter. This can reveal whether synchronization is contributing to the sensation of delay, but tearing may become more visible. Treat the result as evidence about your setup, not a permanent rule for every game.

Compare supported VRR or Adaptive Sync

If the display and GPU support VRR or Adaptive Sync, compare it with V-Sync off and with a suitable frame cap. Watch both response and frame pacing. A mode that feels faster but produces distracting tearing may not be the best practical choice, while a capped mode can feel more consistent when the system cannot sustain a higher rate.

Understand the NVIDIA trade-off

NVIDIA describes combinations of G-SYNC, Reflex, and V-SYNC that can reduce tearing while retaining low latency on compatible systems. It also notes that running Reflex completely uncapped can trade additional tearing for still lower latency. These are platform-specific behaviors, not instructions to copy blindly into another game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not transplant a game-specific recommendation

Steam’s Counter-Strike 2 support guidance recommends a particular V-SYNC, G-SYNC, and Reflex combination for compatible systems. That recommendation is specific to the game and supported hardware. A different action game may expose different options or respond differently, so compare modes in the actual game you play.

Compare exclusive fullscreen and borderless

If both modes are available, test exclusive fullscreen against borderless using the same resolution and graphics settings. Older vendor guidance does not guarantee that one mode is fastest on every current Windows configuration. Keep the mode that gives repeatable frame pacing and response in your game.

How should I use NVIDIA Reflex and graphics settings?

Use the game’s NVIDIA Reflex option when the game and GPU support it, and treat driver-level low-latency mode as a fallback when Reflex is unavailable. Do not assume that stacking both produces an extra benefit.

Test Reflex in the game first

Enable or disable Reflex, restart if the game requests it, and repeat the same offline test. Record whether the change affects frame pacing or the measured PC-side latency. A setting that changes a metric without improving your actual defensive timing is not a complete solution.

Use driver low-latency mode only when appropriate

NVIDIA presents driver low-latency mode as an alternative when Reflex is not available. If the game already offers Reflex, avoid treating both controls as additive. Compare one configuration at a time and keep the configuration that is stable in your title.

Reduce unstable graphics load

Lower settings that cause frame-time spikes, especially when the GPU is saturated. Intel’s support example contrasts 59 frames per second on a 60 Hz display with trying 120 or more frames per second; those figures are examples to compare, not a promise that a particular frame rate will improve every parry. The practical goal is stable delivery that your hardware can sustain, not a headline number that fluctuates.

Could my controller, keyboard, cable, or mapping be dropping inputs?

Yes. A missing or intermittent press points to the input path rather than the display. Compare a known-good device before buying a faster one.

Compare another controller or keyboard

Use the same game, binding, and encounter with a second device. Check whether the physical button feels inconsistent, whether the controller loses power, and whether wireless range or interference changes the result. A successful comparison implicates the original device or its connection, but it does not prove a particular replacement has a lower total latency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare wired and wireless without assuming a winner

For a supported controller, test a working USB data cable and compare it with the normal wireless connection. Modern wireless devices can be responsive, and wired is not automatically faster in every design. The useful result is whether one path eliminates missed or irregular presses in your setup.

Try another USB port and a real data cable

When response changes by port, connections drop, or inputs arrive irregularly, move the controller to another USB port. Make sure the cable carries data rather than power only. Steam documents USB scheduling and contention as possible explanations for inconsistent controller behavior.

Inspect bindings and Steam Input

Check the game’s in-game binding screen and any Steam Input configuration. Steam can emulate gamepad input, and Activision has noted potential Steam/game configuration conflicts in Sekiro. These facts do not establish that Steam Input adds a fixed number of milliseconds; they justify checking for duplicate, overridden, or incorrectly translated bindings.

Check polling-rate claims carefully

NVIDIA’s 2020-era optimization guide says that 125 Hz mouse polling can add approximately 3 milliseconds of average system latency compared with 1,000 Hz. That figure concerns a mouse and is not an independently verified gamepad result, so polling-rate tuning should not be your central parry fix.

How do I learn the correct parry rule for a specific game?

Read the game’s own manual or training instructions and determine whether the defensive action requires a press, a hold, a release, a direction, or a different button. There is no sourced, cross-game parry-window statistic that can be applied to every PC action game.

Use Sekiro as an example, not a template

FromSoftware’s Sekiro web manual distinguishes holding guard from a timed deflect and says to use the guard button “the moment before a blow lands.” In that game, a guarded hit without a deflect can indicate that the timing rule was not met. Other games may use an earlier input buffer, a different animation cue, or an entirely different defensive action.

Test the cue, not your guess

Choose one attack with a clear animation. Try the defensive input early, at the apparent impact, and while holding the button, then note whether the game produces a guard, deflect, dodge, or hit. Do not invent exact active-frame counts or animation-cancel rules for an unspecified title.

Relearn only after the setup is stable

Once display, frame delivery, and input reliability are consistent, practice the same cue again. Changing hardware and timing technique simultaneously makes it impossible to know which change mattered.

What can FrameView and other tools actually measure?

Use measurement tools to compare repeatable system behavior, not to claim that a parry became easier. NVIDIA FrameView 1.7 can report average FPS, 1% low FPS, and PC Latency where supported.

Understand the PC Latency boundary

FrameView’s PC Latency focuses on the PC portion of the path. It excludes controller delay and display delay, so a lower PC Latency number does not prove that the complete button-to-photon chain improved. It also does not prove that your parry success rate increased.

LAPGEAR Home Office Lap Desk – Pink, Fits 15.6” Laptops | Built-In Mouse Pad & Phone Slot, Integrated Device Ledge, Dual-Bolster Microbead Cushion, Carry Handle

  • On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.14 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.

Make before-and-after records meaningful

  1. Use the same resolution, display mode, encounter, and input device.
  2. Record average FPS, 1% low FPS, and frame-time behavior where available.
  3. Record PC Latency only as a PC-side measure, clearly separate from controller and display delay.
  4. Repeat after one change, then restore the prior setting if the result is worse.
  5. Describe the result as a change in the recorded metric, not as a guaranteed improvement to every defensive input.

What should I do when the symptom persists?

Follow the branch that matches the remaining symptom instead of applying every tweak at once.

Remaining symptom Focused next action What not to conclude
Everything still feels late offline Recheck active refresh rate, TV Game Mode, display processing, presentation mode, VRR, and frame stability Do not assume a new controller will fix a display bottleneck
Only one button still fails Use another device, cable, USB port, and binding profile; inspect Steam Input overrides Do not call it input lag if the press is not reaching the game
Guard works but deflect does not Verify the game’s timing rule and practice one attack cue Do not infer a universal parry window from another game
Frame rate fluctuates during attacks Lower demanding settings and compare a stable cap or supported VRR mode Do not treat a high peak FPS number as proof of low latency
Only online matches feel wrong Repeat offline and investigate network conditions separately Do not label a network symptom as a monitor defect without an offline comparison

When is buying a monitor, controller, or cable justified?

Buy only after a free comparison identifies the likely constraint. A display purchase is reasonable when the current display has confirmed high input lag, unavailable refresh or VRR support, or unavoidable processing. A PC-compatible wired gamepad or controller-compatible USB data cable is useful for a known-good comparison, not a guaranteed latency reduction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • For a display: compare independent input-lag measurements, refresh and VRR support, connection compatibility, and the display’s actual operating modes.
  • For a controller: verify that the game supports its input protocol, that the buttons and sticks are reliable, and that both wired and wireless modes are documented.
  • For a cable: confirm the connector and data capability; a charging-only cable cannot provide a wired input path.
  • For any purchase: keep the return or exchange conditions in mind because no product can correct a game rule, mapping conflict, or missed timing cue.

What is the shortest reliable checklist?

  1. Reproduce one attack offline and classify the symptom.
  2. Confirm Windows and in-game refresh settings.
  3. Enable TV Game Mode or remove unnecessary display processing.
  4. Compare direct wired display output when applicable.
  5. Test V-Sync off, supported VRR, and a suitable frame cap separately.
  6. Try Reflex when supported; use driver low-latency mode only if Reflex is unavailable.
  7. Lower graphics settings if frame delivery is unstable.
  8. Compare a known-good controller or keyboard, another USB port, and a verified data cable.
  9. Inspect game bindings and Steam Input overrides.
  10. Learn the named game’s own guard or deflect rule.
  11. Use FrameView numbers as PC-side evidence, not as proof of complete button-to-display latency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a high refresh rate remove parry mistakes completely?

No. A faster refresh mode can improve the display stage when the computer and panel are actually running at that mode, but it cannot fix a wrong timing rule, a bad binding, or a button that never registers. Confirm the active refresh rate before spending money.

Is a wired controller always lower latency than wireless on PC?

No universal advantage is established for every modern controller. Compare a supported wired data connection with the device’s wireless mode under the same encounter, watching for dropped or irregular presses rather than assuming the cable is faster.

Why does FrameView show lower PC Latency but parries still fail?

FrameView’s PC Latency excludes controller and display delay, and it does not measure whether the game’s parry rule accepted the input. A lower PC-side number can coexist with a mapping problem, display processing, or a mistimed deflect.

Should I copy Counter-Strike 2’s V-Sync and Reflex settings into another game?

No. Steam’s recommendation is for compatible Counter-Strike 2 systems. Other games may implement synchronization, Reflex, frame caps, and fullscreen modes differently, so compare supported combinations in the title you are troubleshooting.
