Hyperlinks that worked in your draft suddenly stop responding during slide show, or they only open after you copy the file to another machine. That’s a common PowerPoint failure mode—usually caused by link type, permissions, security, or how the presentation is being run.
This guide walks you through the fixes that actually resolve most hyperlink issues in PowerPoint 2024 and Microsoft 365 versions, on both Windows and macOS. You’ll get a quick checklist, then targeted repairs for URL links, file links, email links, and internal slide jumps.

Why Hyperlinks Fail in PowerPoint (Common Causes)
PowerPoint hyperlinks can fail for reasons that have nothing to do with the link text itself. The most common culprits are mismatched link types, broken targets, blocked security, or hyperlink behavior not being enabled in the current context.
#1 Best Overall
- The hyperlink target is invalid: a moved file, renamed folder, or a URL with a typo.
- Incorrect link scope: a “relative” file path that only works on your PC.
- Permissions issues: network drives, OneDrive/SharePoint paths, or protected documents.
- Protected View / security controls: the presentation opens in a restricted mode that blocks external actions.
- Wrong slide show method: clicking during edit mode differs from clicking in Slide Show.
- Object interference: shapes covering other shapes, transparent layers, or grouping changes where the hyperlink isn’t on the clicked object.
First Checks: Confirm the Link Is Actually Clickable
Before you change anything, confirm you’re clicking the right object in the right mode. Many “hyperlinks not working” reports are actually “I clicked the wrong thing.”
- Open the presentation in PowerPoint.
- Click the shape/text that should open the link.
- Switch to Slide Show (from the ribbon) and click the object in the running slideshow.
- If it still fails, return to edit mode and right-click the shape/text, then choose Link… (or Edit Hyperlink… if shown).
If the hyperlink window opens but the target still doesn’t launch, you’re dealing with target validity or security. If the hyperlink window shows No link, the hyperlink was never attached to that object.
Fixes for Web Links and Launching URLs
For URL hyperlinks (http/https), PowerPoint depends on the default browser and URL formatting. Even one character off can break it.
Recommended Free Tools
Verify the URL format
Right-click the hyperlink object → Edit Hyperlink → check the Address field. Use full URLs like https://example.com, not just www.example.com.
If the address was copied from a document, it may include trailing spaces or invisible characters.
Test the URL outside PowerPoint
Paste the exact Address into your browser’s address bar. If it fails there, PowerPoint can’t fix it.
Confirm the link launches in the browser
After editing the hyperlink, run Slide Show and click the object. If it only works in edit mode, you’re likely experiencing a slide show configuration or object hit-testing issue.

Fixes for File Links (Local Files, Network Shares, OneDrive)
File hyperlinks are the most fragile type because they depend on where the file lives and what permissions exist on the machine presenting the deck.
Use absolute paths for reliability
Right-click the linked shape → Edit Hyperlink. For Link to: choose the correct option and confirm the target path. Absolute Windows paths look like:
C:\Users\YourName\Documents\Docs\file.pdf
If the link uses a relative path (or a drive letter that changes), it may fail on other computers.
Avoid mapped drives in shared decks
If your file link points to something like \SERVER\Share\file.docx, that’s usually reliable. If it points to Z:\Share\file.docx, it can fail when Z: isn’t mapped on the presenter’s device.
Preferred format: a UNC path:
\\SERVER\\Share\\file.docx
For OneDrive/SharePoint, use web links when possible
File links stored in OneDrive/SharePoint can break when the deck is opened offline or on a device without access. If you’re linking to a document, consider using the document’s share URL (a normal HTTPS link) instead of a local file path.
Fixes for Email Links (mailto:)
mailto hyperlinks are sensitive to formatting. If PowerPoint is constructing the link incorrectly, your mail client won’t open.
- Right-click the hyperlink object → Edit Hyperlink.
- Check Address starts with
mailto:. - Verify special characters are encoded properly (for example spaces in subjects as
%20).
Example address:
mailto:[email protected]?subject=Product%20Update

Fixes for Internal Slide Links (Jump to Slide)
Internal links usually fail because of incorrect slide selection, grouped objects, or hidden slides.
Re-select the target slide
Right-click → Edit Hyperlink → set Link to: Place in This Document, then choose the correct Slide. Confirm you didn’t link to a slide that was later deleted.
Watch for hidden slides
If the target slide is hidden, PowerPoint may not navigate as expected. Show hidden slides temporarily:
- Go to Home → Arrange group → Selection Pane.
- Also check in Slide Sorter view for slides marked hidden.
Windows-Specific Troubleshooting
On Windows, hyperlink launching depends heavily on the default browser and how Windows handles external protocol actions.
Confirm your default browser
- Open Settings → Apps → Default apps.
- Set a browser under Web browser (e.g., Microsoft Edge or Chrome).
Then test the hyperlink again in Slide Show.
Disable “click-to-run” confusion by using Slide Show
Hyperlinks should be tested while presenting: use Slide Show → From Beginning or From Current Slide.

On macOS, external link launching also relies on default app handling and the way PowerPoint presents your deck.
Check your default web browser
macOS decides which browser opens a URL. Confirm your default browser in System Settings, then re-test your link in Slide Show.

- Certified for Microsoft Teams and works with popular presentation and meeting apps.
- Advance slides or go back, and digitally point onscreen with PowerPoint Live.
- Integrated mute control with status light.
- Quickly join meetings with the Microsoft Teams button.
- Reliable control, at your desk or across the room.
Test with a fresh copy of the deck
If only one file is affected, macOS metadata or Office caching can be the cause. Try:
- Save a new copy (File → Save As).
- Copy the hyperlink object into the new file.
- Run Slide Show.
PowerPoint Protected View and Security Settings
Many hyperlinks “work in the editor but not when presented” because the file is opened in a restricted state. Protected View can block external connections.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIdentify if you’re in Protected View
If you see a yellow banner like Protected View or the file opens as read-only, try saving it to a non-restricted location (e.g., your local Documents folder) and reopen.
Common fixes
- Move the file from a download folder or email attachment location to a local drive.
- Disable Protected View temporarily only if your organization allows it (IT policies vary).
- If you’re on a managed machine, ask IT to review Office security policies for hyperlink and external content.
When You Export or Present: Slide Show Mode Differences
Hyperlinks behave differently depending on how you deliver your presentation: live PowerPoint, PowerPoint show (.ppsx/.pptx), or export to video/PDF.
Test in the exact delivery mode
For the cleanest test:
- Use Slide Show in PowerPoint (live).
- If you export to PDF or video, understand that hyperlinks may not remain clickable (especially in video).
- If you’re sending a .pptx to someone else, test on their device if possible.
Use .ppsx if you want “open and present” behavior
If you distribute a presentation for immediate viewing, saving as .ppsx can reduce confusion about edit mode vs slideshow mode.

- Reproduce in Slide Show: run the deck and click the hyperlink object.
- Open the hyperlink editor: right-click object → Edit Hyperlink.
- Confirm Link to type matches intent (URL vs file vs email vs place in document).
- Validate the target:
- URL: paste into browser.
- File: verify it exists at the exact path and you have access.
- Internal slide: re-select the slide.
- Clean the destination path: remove drive-letter dependencies and prefer UNC paths for network files.
- Re-save and re-test: after editing, save and reopen, then test again in Slide Show.
If it still fails after step 6, you likely have a security restriction (Protected View) or a Windows/macOS protocol handler issue.
Common Mistakes That Break Hyperlinks
- Linking to a temporary file: documents stored in temp folders get deleted or blocked.
- Using drive letters that differ by machine: C: and Z: aren’t guaranteed.
- Forgetting to encode spaces in URLs: URLs should be properly formatted.
- Hyperlink attached to the wrong object: the shape you click isn’t the one containing the hyperlink.
- Text boxes overlaid by shapes: you click a different layer that doesn’t have a hyperlink.
- Relying on external viewers: PDF or file viewers may block launching when permissions are restricted.
Troubleshooting Table (What to Try When It Still Fails)
| Symptom | Most Likely Cause | What to Try |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing happens when clicking a URL | URL formatting, default browser, or security restriction | Open Edit Hyperlink → verify full https:// address; test URL in browser; check default browser; re-save the deck outside Protected View |
| URL works on your PC but not on another presenter’s laptop | Firewall/proxy restrictions or blocked external access | Test the URL in their browser; ask IT to allow outbound connections for the target domain |
| File links open on your machine, not for others | Path uses your local folder or mismatched drive letters | Replace local paths with UNC paths \\SERVER\\Share\\file.ext or use HTTPS to OneDrive/SharePoint |
| Internal jump doesn’t navigate | Linked slide changed, deleted, or hidden | Re-open Edit Hyperlink → select the correct slide; ensure target slide isn’t hidden |
| Only one object’s hyperlink fails | Hyperlink attached to different element than what you’re clicking | Use Selection Pane to confirm layered objects; right-click the exact object and check Edit Hyperlink |
| It works in Slide Show, not when exported | Export format doesn’t preserve interactivity | Verify delivery format expectations; if you need clickable links, keep the deck as .pptx/.ppsx |
Alternatives If You Need a Guaranteed Click
If hyperlinks are unreliable in your environment (common in locked-down enterprise setups), you still have options that keep user experience smooth.
Best Value
Use an action button that points to the link
Insert an Action Button, then assign the action to Hyperlink to: Web page or Hyperlink to: File. This can reduce mistakes from accidentally hyperlinking the wrong object.
Use QR codes for file/URL access
If you only need users to open a page or document, a QR code sidesteps protocol restrictions and works with mobile browsers.

FAQs
Why do my hyperlinks work when I edit but not in Slide Show?
That usually points to security mode (Protected View) or you testing the wrong object/layer. Confirm by running Slide Show and checking Edit Hyperlink on the exact shape you click.
Can I fix hyperlinks that point to a file that moved?
Yes. Re-open Edit Hyperlink, update the target under Link to:, and save. For shared decks, prefer stable targets like UNC network paths or a SharePoint/OneDrive HTTPS URL.
Do hyperlinks work after exporting to PDF or video?
Often no. PDF may preserve links, but video exports can’t be clicked. Test your export type and delivery method—PowerPoint interactivity isn’t guaranteed across formats.
Are hyperlinks blocked by Microsoft Defender or antivirus?
Sometimes. Endpoint security can block browser launching or external file execution. If the issue is consistent across multiple decks from the same network or download source, check with IT for Office/Office add-in and external protocol rules.
Bottom Line
Most “hyperlink not working in PowerPoint” issues come down to one of three things: the target is invalid, the path depends on your specific machine, or a security setting blocks external actions in the presentation environment.
Use the repair workflow—verify link type, confirm the exact target, re-save outside Protected View, then test in Slide Show—to get to a fix quickly in PowerPoint 2024.
