If a free PS5 game has vanished from your PlayStation Plus library, first check what kind of game it was and whether the account that claimed it still has the right subscription. A claimed Essential monthly game and a rotating Extra or Premium catalog game have different access rules: restoring licenses can fix a syncing problem, but it cannot bring back a catalog title that has left the service. Check your account and the game’s status before reinstalling anything.
Why does a PlayStation Plus game disappear or show a padlock?
A missing game is usually an account-entitlement question before it is a download or storage problem. The game may be hidden, claimed on a different account, unavailable on your current subscription tier, removed from the rotating catalog, or affected by a license-sync issue. A padlock can point to a license problem, but it does not by itself tell you which of those situations applies.

Sony’s PlayStation Plus Usage Terms explain the central distinction: “Games downloaded to your console are playable as long as you have a valid subscription and the game remains available in the service.” The terms also say: “Certain games featured on PlayStation Plus may be made available on a limited-time basis. The number and availability of games included in the service are subject to change at any time and vary by subscription tier, country or region, console platform and device.” Those conditions mean an installed game file is not the same thing as a current right to play it.
Sony says a padlock can mean there is a problem with the game’s license. But a lock caused by an expired subscription, a title that has left the catalog, or parental controls requires a different response from a license-sync glitch. Use the checks below in order so you do not delete or reinstall a game before confirming you still have access to it.

Was it a claimed monthly game or a catalog game?
Identify the entitlement type first. Essential monthly games and Extra/Premium catalog games do not have the same keep rules, even if both were free to download while your membership was active.

Sony’s support page “How to access PlayStation Plus games” explains that new monthly games are added each calendar month and can be found on PS5 under Games home > PlayStation Plus > Benefits > Monthly Games. The October 2026 Essential lineup, for example, included F1 25, Hunt: Showdown 1896, and Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2; that dated lineup is an example, not a continuing offer. Extra unlocks the Game Catalog, while Premium adds the Classics Catalog and streaming of many catalog and classics titles in supported regions. An Essential membership alone does not unlock Extra or Premium catalog games.
When you are unsure whether a catalog title is still offered, compare the PS5 PlayStation Plus tab with the PlayStation Plus games guide. Catalog selection can differ by country or region, tier, and platform.
How do I check the account, membership, and game listing?
Use the account that bought or redeemed the game, then verify both the membership and the title’s current eligibility. A console can show a game tile even when the signed-in profile does not own the entitlement.
- Sign in to the account that claimed the game. If another family member or profile redeemed it, check that profile’s transaction history and membership rather than assuming the game belongs to every account on the console.
- Check your subscription. On PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Subscriptions. Confirm that the membership is active and that its tier matches the game: Essential for claimed monthly games, Extra or Premium for the Game Catalog, and Premium for Classics or streaming where offered.
- Check the claim or transaction history. A monthly game must have been claimed while it was offered; merely seeing or downloading a catalog listing does not create a permanent purchase entitlement. Sony’s “Can’t find purchased content on a PS5 console” guidance also points players to transaction history when locating content.
- Check whether the title is still available. Look in the PlayStation Plus guide and on the console’s Plus tab, including “Last Chance to Play.” If the game has left the catalog, an active Extra or Premium subscription does not preserve access.
- Check the service status before changing console settings. See PlayStation Network service status. If Sony reports a service issue, wait for it to clear before treating the missing entitlement as a local console fault.
If your subscription lapsed, renewing the same account’s membership can restore access to claimed monthly games, assuming the entitlement remains valid. A catalog game, however, still has to be in the current catalog and covered by your tier. Restoring licenses is not a substitute for renewing a lapsed membership.

Where should I look if the game is not on the PS5 home screen?
A game missing from the home screen may still be in your collection. Check the full library and its hidden-items filter before concluding that the title was deleted or lost.

- Open Filter and Sort and enable Hidden Items. Sony says a hidden game is hidden from the Library on all consoles; on PS5, this is also the route to unhide it.
- Check whether you are looking for the PS4 or PS5 edition. A title can have more than one platform listing, so verify the edition associated with the game you claimed or installed.
- Confirm the country or region of the account. PlayStation Plus catalogs vary by region, so a listing seen on another account or in another country may not be available to yours.
Do not use the home-screen row alone as proof that a game has disappeared from your account. The collection and hidden-items filter are the more useful places to distinguish a visibility issue from an entitlement issue.
Can another profile on the PS5 play the game?
If a different profile owns the membership or downloaded game, the owner may need to enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on this PS5. Sony says this lets other users on that console play downloaded purchases and use some PlayStation Plus benefits, including offline, subject to the content and benefit involved.
The owner can enable it at Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. Sony allows this setting on one PS5 at a time per account. If it is active on a previous console, turn it off there or use Account Management to remotely deactivate all devices; Sony limits remote deactivation of all devices to once every six months.
A padlock covering the whole game artwork can also result from a Family Manager parental-control lock. Restoring licenses will not remove a parental-control restriction; the Family Manager needs to review the applicable family settings.

How do I restore PS5 licenses safely?
Restore Licenses is the right next step when you still have a valid entitlement but the PS5 has not synchronized it correctly. Sony lists it for a padlocked game not related to an expired Plus subscription, content you cannot locate, and games that crash; the company says, “Please note, restoring licenses won’t affect your data.”
- On PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- Select the licenses you want to restore and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Alternatively, highlight the game in the home screen or Game Library, press the Options button, and choose Restore License.
- After it finishes, check the game again. If its lock remains, return to the entitlement checks rather than repeatedly restoring the same license.
Restoring a license does not extend a subscription, change your tier, or recover an Extra/Premium title that has left the service. It cannot correct a game that was never claimed on this account, and it does not override a Family Manager’s parental-control lock. Sony does not publish a success rate for Restore Licenses, so there is no reliable percentage for how often it resolves missing Plus games.
What if Restore Licenses does not fix the problem?
Continue with Sony’s basic launch and download troubleshooting only after confirming that your account is entitled to the game. These steps address console or installation problems, not an expired membership or catalog removal.
- Check status and restart the console. If services are working, use Power > Restart PS5.
- Install available system software updates. Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Recheck Console Sharing and Offline Play if the game belongs to another profile on this PS5.
- Move a PS5 game off USB extended storage if it is installed there. Sony’s game-launch guidance recommends moving a PS5 title to the console’s internal storage.
- Use Safe Mode only if the simpler checks fail. Turn off the PS5, then press and hold the power button until the second beep. Connect the DualSense controller by USB and choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. Do not select Reset PS5 as a substitute; it is a different operation.
- Delete and download again only after protecting your saves. Reinstallation can help with a damaged local install, but it cannot restore an entitlement that has ended.
- Contact PlayStation Support if a claimed monthly game is still missing or the entitlement remains wrong. Include any error code, a short description of what you did to reproduce the problem, the time of an access attempt, and a screenshot or video.
What happens when an Extra or Premium game leaves the catalog?
A catalog departure is not a license glitch. Sony’s terms make availability limited-time and subject to change; leaving the game installed or downloading it before its removal does not preserve the right to play. The game files may remain on the SSD, but the entitlement ends when the title leaves the service or when your membership no longer includes the catalog.

PSN.GG reported that eight games were scheduled to leave Extra and Premium on 20 October 2026, including Silent Hill 2 and Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Separately, ComicBook.com and PSUni reported that Totally Reliable Delivery Service disappeared from Extra/Premium in November 2025 and returned around March–April 2026, after roughly four months. Those reports show that catalog availability can change, but a return is never guaranteed.

If a catalog game is gone, your practical options are to wait in case it returns or buy a compatible edition from the PlayStation Store. A later return can restore access if your plan and region qualify, but Sony does not promise that the same edition, platform version, old installation, or downloadable-content combination will reconnect automatically. Sony’s Plus guidance says existing save data can be used again if it has not been deleted and you obtain a valid license for the game.
The same access change applies if you downgrade from Extra or Premium to Essential: Game Catalog access ends when the downgrade takes effect, even if the game itself remains in the catalog. Trophies remain on your profile; saved data is separate from the game license, although you cannot load a save in a game you cannot currently launch.

Be careful when one title appears both as an Essential monthly game and in the Extra/Premium catalog. Specialist reporting and an official Sony Brazil consumer-support reply document a case in which downloading the catalog copy replaces the keepable Essential license. If both listings are available, claim and download the Essential monthly tile rather than the Extra catalog tile.
PlayStation LifeStyle’s Zarmena Khan warned about this issue on 16 December 2025 in connection with LEGO Horizon Adventures. In a 17 September 2025 reply on Reclame Aqui, a Sony Interactive Entertainment Brazil representative said that installing games through the Extra/Deluxe catalog could replace a license previously obtained through Essential. Sony’s English public support pages do not state this overwrite warning in the same explicit terms, so treat this as a documented consumer-support position and specialist report, not as a general rule that every Plus download replaces a monthly claim.
If the Essential claim is still visible in your account history but the game became inaccessible after downloading its catalog listing, gather the claim record and contact PlayStation Support. Do not assume that another catalog download or repeated license restore will recreate the earlier Essential entitlement.

How can I tell a catalog error from a game I deleted?
If a catalog title is missing but is not shown in “Last Chance to Play,” it may be an unannounced catalog or store-listing issue rather than something you removed. Reports about Totally Reliable Delivery Service described a temporary gap, and PSUni also discussed other unexplained catalog disappearances; Sony did not publicly explain those cases in the cited reports.
Check the official PlayStation Plus games guide and the console listing for your region, then contact Support if the title should still be available but does not appear. Waiting may be reasonable where a listing is temporarily absent, but do not assume that every missing game will return or that a hidden-item check can fix a service-side listing gap.

How often does Restore Licenses bring back a missing PS Plus game?
Sony does not publish a recovery rate for the feature, so there is no official figure that predicts whether it will fix a particular case. The useful distinction is whether your account still has a valid entitlement: a sync issue may be recoverable, while a catalog departure is not.
How long can a PS Plus catalog game be missing before it returns?
There is no published return schedule or guarantee. ComicBook.com and PSUni reported that Totally Reliable Delivery Service was absent from Extra/Premium from November 2025 until around March–April 2026, but that single reported case does not establish a standard wait time.
Does buying the game make my old save usable again?
A compatible PlayStation Store edition can provide a new purchase entitlement, and Sony’s Plus guidance says existing save data can be used again if it has not been deleted. That does not guarantee that every edition, platform version, or DLC combination will match the old installation.
