For an AI agent that can run arbitrary code, install packages, or control Docker, a standard container may not put the isolation boundary where you need it: containers share the host kernel. Firecracker-based microVMs and Docker Sandboxes put a guest kernel between the workload and host, while gVisor takes a different approach by implementing a Linux-like interface in a userspace application kernel. The right choice depends not just on the runtime, but also on what files, credentials, network destinations, and host integrations the agent can reach.

This guide compares those options for developers and platform or security engineers. Product details and platform support can change; the cited project and vendor documentation was checked on October 25, 2026.

What does it mean to isolate an AI agent?

An AI agent is not inherently dangerous because it uses a language model. The security concern is what the agent is allowed to do: execute code, install dependencies, read or modify files, make network requests, use credentials, or invoke tools on the host. If its task or a dependency is malicious or compromised, those same capabilities can become a route to data exposure or system changes.

Isolation is the boundary intended to limit those effects. A sandbox can constrain the process environment, but it does not automatically make every action harmless. A mounted working directory, forwarded credential, allowed network destination, or host-side integration is an intentional path across the boundary. Evaluate those paths alongside the runtime itself.

Start with the agent’s permissions

List what the agent needs before selecting a sandbox: which repository it can access, whether it needs write access, whether it must build container images, which services it must contact, and which credentials or tools it must use. Grant only the access needed for the task. A stronger compute boundary cannot compensate for a credential that already grants broad access or a workspace mount that exposes unrelated files.

Separate the boundary from the policy

The runtime provides a kind of isolation; policy determines what crosses it. For example, a microVM can provide a separate guest kernel, while workspace settings decide which host files are shared and network settings decide which destinations are reachable. Security depends on both.

What is the difference between containers, microVMs, and gVisor?

The core distinction is where the operating-system boundary sits. Standard containers share the host kernel; a microVM runs its own guest kernel behind a hypervisor boundary; gVisor interposes a userspace application kernel that implements a Linux-like interface. These are different architectures, not interchangeable labels for the same kind of sandbox.

Option Isolation model What to weigh
Standard container Namespaces and cgroups isolate workloads while they share the host kernel, as Docker describes in its product comparison. Useful for trusted workloads where packaging and efficiency matter. Assess carefully before giving autonomous code execution broad privileges or access to a host Docker socket.
Firecracker microVM An open-source virtual machine monitor (VMM) using Linux KVM; each Firecracker process encapsulates one microVM. A low-level component for teams building an execution service or integrating microVMs into infrastructure. The operator must provide the surrounding guest image, network and storage setup, lifecycle, and policy.
Docker Sandboxes Docker documents a microVM per local sandbox, with a separate kernel and private Docker daemon, plus controls for network access, credentials, and workspace connections. A packaged option for local AI coding agents that need to run code and use Docker. Check current platform and agent support and configure the connections deliberately.
gVisor A userspace application kernel implements a Linux-like interface. Its runsc runtime is compatible with Docker and Kubernetes. Consider when an application-kernel isolation layer and OCI ecosystem integration suit the deployment. Validate workload compatibility, supported system calls, and operational requirements.
Kata Containers The Firecracker project lists Kata Containers among Firecracker integrations. Worth evaluating as a VM-backed route in a container ecosystem. The sources cited here do not establish current Kata-specific architecture or comparative performance details.

Docker’s comparison explains the kernel distinction, but it is vendor-authored product documentation, not an independent benchmark. No independent head-to-head performance measurements were available for these options, so test your own workload rather than treating an architecture description as a speed or security ranking.

What is Firecracker, and what do you have to build around it?

Firecracker is an open-source, KVM-based VMM for creating lightweight microVMs. It is a building block, not a ready-made agent sandbox: teams using it directly need to build or integrate the components that prepare guests, connect storage and networking, manage VM lifecycles, and enforce workload policy.

The Firecracker design documentation says, “Each Firecracker process encapsulates one and only one microVM.” It also treats guest vCPU threads as potentially malicious and recommends defense in depth around the Firecracker process itself, including seccomp, cgroups, namespaces, and dropping privileges. The hypervisor boundary is important, but the project does not present it as a reason to omit host-side confinement.

What the project figures do—and do not—tell you

The Firecracker project website reports more than 15 trillion monthly Lambda function invocations, boot in under 125 ms, and less than 5 MiB of overhead per VM. The captured site material gives no measurement date or independent benchmark for these claims; they are project-reported figures, not a performance promise for a different host, guest image, or workload. The Firecracker README also lists defaults of one vCPU and 128 MiB of memory for configured microVMs. Those are implementation defaults, not recommended sizing or a measured performance result.

The practical appeal is a low-level microVM component that an infrastructure team can adapt to its own execution service. The trade-off is operational responsibility: the team must own or integrate the systems around the VMM and keep their configuration and lifecycle sound.

How do Docker Sandboxes isolate an agent?

Docker documents each local sandbox as a microVM with its own kernel and private Docker daemon. That makes its boundary different from running an agent in an ordinary container, while the product’s workspace, credential, network, and host integrations still determine what the agent can affect.

Workspace mode changes the file boundary

  • Direct mode: the workspace is shared read-write, so edits the agent makes are live on the host. This is convenient for working directly in a project, but it means the sandbox does not keep those edits inside the VM.
  • Clone mode: Docker documents a read-only repository mount plus a private clone for the agent to modify. This separates the agent’s working edits from the mounted source, but it does not remove other configured access paths.

Choose the mode based on whether immediate host-visible edits are worth the convenience. Before using either mode, verify exactly which path is shared and whether the agent can write to it.

Check the connections, not just the VM

Docker documents network policy, credential proxying, shared skills mounts, SSH-agent forwarding, and local integrations such as stdio MCP servers as parts of the sandbox environment. Each changes the practical trust boundary. An allowed destination may accept data sent by the agent; forwarded credentials may let it act on your behalf; and a local stdio MCP server executes outside the sandbox VM. Docker also says the agent has sudo privileges inside its VM, with the VM and hypervisor intended as the main boundary. That is not the same as giving the agent unrestricted host sudo, but it makes the VM boundary and the connected resources especially important.

Before relying on Docker Sandboxes in a real workflow, consult Docker’s current documentation for supported operating systems and agents, network-policy defaults, credential behavior, and workspace modes. The product details can change, and the exact configuration matters more than the word “sandbox.”

How should you choose an isolation option for an agent?

Match the isolation boundary and its access paths to the agent’s authority and your team’s ability to operate the runtime. Use the least complex option that still addresses the threat you actually have.

  1. Classify the workload. Is the code trusted, reviewed, and fixed, or can prompts, users, repositories, or dependencies cause the agent to run arbitrary code?
  2. Inventory the access it needs. Record file mounts, write permissions, Docker access, credentials, network destinations, and host integrations. Remove access the task does not require.
  3. Choose the boundary. A standard container may suit trusted services with ordinary packaging needs. For an agent with broad ability to install packages, run arbitrary code, or control Docker, evaluate a separate-kernel sandbox. Consider gVisor where its application-kernel model, OCI compatibility, and deployment requirements fit.
  4. Check platform and workload fit. Confirm that the runtime is supported where you deploy it. Test the agent, dependencies, system calls, network behavior, and build process in that environment; the available sources do not provide independent cross-runtime compatibility or performance benchmarks.
  5. Test the policy paths. Verify which files are visible and writable, which network destinations work, what forwarded credentials can do, and whether any host-side tools execute outside the sandbox.
  6. Review operations and recovery. Decide who maintains guest images or runtime configuration, handles lifecycle and cleanup, updates policies, and investigates a compromised or misconfigured run.

Quick decision cues

  • Trusted workload, lightweight packaging is the priority: a standard container may be sufficient, provided its privileges and host connections are appropriately limited.
  • Untrusted or autonomous code execution: evaluate a separate-kernel sandbox and narrow its files, credentials, network access, and integrations.
  • Building a multi-tenant execution service: Firecracker may be a suitable infrastructure component if your team can build and operate the surrounding system.
  • Container or Kubernetes integration is central: compare gVisor and VM-backed runtimes against the actual workload and deployment constraints; the architecture labels alone do not decide compatibility or performance.

Can an AI agent escape its sandbox?

No sandbox should be treated as proof that escape or harmful side effects are impossible. The useful question is what boundary the runtime provides and which paths around or through that boundary remain configured.

A container shares the host kernel, so its isolation model differs from a microVM’s separate guest kernel. Firecracker’s own design calls for defense in depth around its VMM process, and Docker’s documentation identifies host-visible direct workspace edits and host-side integrations as exceptions to the simple idea that everything happens inside a VM. None of those facts establishes that a particular deployment is exploitable; they do show why configuration and threat modeling matter.

  • Do not mount unrelated host directories or share sensitive files unless the task needs them.
  • Use the narrowest practical write access, and understand whether changes are live on the host or confined to a clone.
  • Limit allowed network destinations and credentials to the task’s needs.
  • Inspect every integration that runs on the host or forwards a host capability into the sandbox.
  • For directly operated microVM infrastructure, apply the project’s recommended process confinement in addition to virtualization.

What should you test before trusting a sandbox?

Run the agent with the same permissions and connections it will receive in production, then verify both the expected workflow and the boundary. A successful build alone is not a security test.

Check functionality

  • Can the agent complete the intended coding or build task with the selected runtime and workspace mode?
  • Do required tools, packages, and system calls work in the chosen environment?
  • Are only the intended network destinations reachable, and do failures produce understandable diagnostics?

Check containment and side effects

  • Which host files can the agent read or change? Confirm the result matches the selected mount and write policy.
  • Can the agent use credentials or forwarded services for actions beyond the task?
  • Does any local tool, daemon, or integration execute outside the VM, and what authority does it have?
  • After a run, can you identify its changes and clean up its workspace and resources?

Repeat these checks when changing the runtime, agent, workspace configuration, or policy. Compatibility and security properties belong to the deployment you actually run, not merely to a product category.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an AI agent need Docker inside its sandbox?

Only if its task needs to build or run containers. A sandbox that provides a private Docker daemon can support that workflow without making the agent’s daemon the host’s daemon; verify which daemon and resources the configured agent can reach.

Can a sandbox protect secrets from the agent itself?

Not if the agent can read or use those secrets through a mount, environment, proxy, or integration. Give it task-scoped credentials and avoid exposing secrets that the job does not need.

Is gVisor compatible with every Linux application?

No universal compatibility guarantee follows from OCI integration. Its userspace kernel implements a Linux-like interface, so validate the specific system calls and behaviors your workload depends on.

Can Firecracker be used without KVM?

The project describes Firecracker as a Linux KVM-based VMM. Confirm host hardware, kernel, and deployment prerequisites in the current project documentation before planning an implementation.
