On your PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information and record the system software version shown there. That is the version currently installed on your console—not an update being offered or the newest version listed by Sony. Checking it does not require you to start an update. Sony documents this screen as the place to view an installed system-software version, including a beta version. Sony’s instructions for PS5 system software beta

Where is my PS5 firmware version?

Sony labels the console’s firmware as system software. To see the version installed now, use this path from the PS5 home screen:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Open System Software.
  4. Select Console Information.
  5. Read and copy the displayed system-software version, keeping the complete number and punctuation intact.

The result is specific to the console you checked. It does not establish whether an emulator or a third-party setup will work: that depends on the particular project’s requirements and, potentially, the PS5 model as well as its software version. Sony’s documented version-check path is in its PS5 beta software instructions; the same screen is useful for recording the installed version before researching a project.

What to write down

Copy the entire version string rather than reducing it to a short number. If a project’s documentation uses a shortened version label, preserve the console’s full display when asking for help or comparing requirements. Do not assume two differently formatted strings refer to compatible releases unless that project explicitly explains how it maps them.

It can also help to note the model category—original PS5, PS5 Slim, or PS5 Pro—separately from the version. Keep that detail distinct: the version screen answers which system software is installed, while the model identifies the hardware whose support must also be checked.

Does checking firmware update my PS5?

No. Viewing Console Information is a read-only check of the version already installed. The separate System Software Update and Settings screen contains the update command and automatic-update controls, so do not select an update merely to discover your current version. Sony describes updating separately from viewing the installed version in its system-software instructions.

Which release Sony lists as current Sony’s PS5 system-software release-history page A published release listing, not proof that this particular console has installed it

Sony’s US release-history page displayed 26.07-14.20.00 at the top when checked on October 30, 2026. That is a snapshot of the release listed on the page at that time; it is not a release date, a guarantee that every console has that version, or a compatibility statement for emulator projects. The value on your Console Information screen is the one to compare with project documentation.

Can I see my PS5 beta version?

Yes. Sony says an installed beta system-software version is visible under Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Record the version displayed there rather than relying on an old beta invitation, download notice, or release page to infer what remains installed.

A beta label or version number by itself does not establish that a third-party project supports that software. Check the project’s own current requirements and any restrictions it gives for beta builds before treating the version as eligible.

What does the version number tell me about an emulator?

It tells you which system software is installed, but not whether an emulator setup is compatible. Compatibility is project-specific and may depend on the exact build, the console model, and the project’s installation method; there is no universal PS5 firmware-to-emulator compatibility table established here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First clarify where the emulator will run

People may mean two different things by “a PS5 emulator.” One possibility is running Linux or emulation software in a third-party environment on PS5 hardware. The other is running software on a separate PC to emulate a console. The PS5 version check is relevant to the first kind of setup; do not apply a PS5-console firmware prerequisite to software running on a PC unless that PC project specifically says it applies.

The ps5-linux project is one documented example of a project for running Linux and emulators on supported PS5 hardware. Its compatibility notes are evidence about that project, not a general guarantee for every emulator, Linux build, or installation method. The ps5-linux project’s documentation

Compare the requirements that actually apply

Before proceeding, open the documentation for the exact project and build you intend to use. Check these details side by side with what you recorded:

  • Supported system software: Look for the full version or release range the maintainers name. Do not convert shorthand such as “13.60” into a compatibility guarantee for a differently formatted version unless the project makes that mapping clear.
  • Console model: Check whether the documentation distinguishes original PS5, Slim, and Pro. The ps5-linux project lists model-specific support, including different lists for Pro versus original/Slim hardware; a release listed for one category should not be assumed to cover another.
  • Project and build: Make sure the information applies to the specific project and current instructions you plan to follow, not to another emulator or an earlier build.
  • Installation prerequisites: Identify required storage, input devices, and any other hardware before starting. A project’s requirements are not interchangeable with Sony’s requirements for ordinary console use.
  • Update and recovery implications: Understand the project’s stated limitations and the effect of changing system software before making a change. Do not treat an update, backup, or reinstall as a guaranteed route back to an earlier version.

Project support can change, and Sony can publish newer system software. The ps5-linux README’s version and model lists are a project snapshot, not a durable promise. Reopen the maintainer’s current documentation immediately before relying on a listed requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I identify my PS5 model?

Write down whether your console is the original launch PS5, a PS5 Slim, or a PS5 Pro. Use the model information printed on the console or its packaging and match it to the project’s terminology. Avoid treating disc-drive status, storage capacity, or a retailer’s product name as a substitute for the model category used by the maintainer. If the project lists a specific model code, use that code rather than guessing from appearance.

This matters because hardware support may be split into separate lists. In the ps5-linux documentation, original/Slim and Pro systems are not presented as one interchangeable target. A firmware number that appears on an original/Slim list is not automatically valid for a Pro, and vice versa. Record the model before downloading files so you do not follow instructions for the wrong branch.

How do I interpret a version string safely?

Keep every component, hyphen, and period exactly as displayed. A value such as 26.07-14.20.00 is a complete Sony release label, while a project may mention a shorter form such as 13.60. Those formats cannot be compared by arithmetic, and a matching-looking prefix does not prove equivalence. Only the project maintainers can define how their shorthand maps to Sony’s release labels.

Also distinguish three different facts: the version installed on your console, a file or update Sony offers for download, and the latest release shown on Sony’s history page. They may differ. Capture a photo or written copy of Console Information if you are seeking help, and include the model category and the date you checked it. This prevents a helper from evaluating an older version or confusing an offered update with an installed one.

Should I turn off automatic updates while checking compatibility?

If you are still comparing a project’s requirements, you can inspect Sony’s automatic-update controls before deciding what to do. This is a tradeoff, not a blanket recommendation: Sony advises keeping system software current for security and normal use, while delaying an update to preserve an older version for a third-party project may conflict with that advice.

To review the controls, go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and inspect Download Update Files Automatically and Install Update Files Automatically. Sony’s automatic-update instructions explain these settings. Reading the controls is not the same as installing an update. Decide based on your security and support needs, and do not assume that disabling an option guarantees a project’s compatibility or prevents every possible software change.

What should I know before changing system software?

Do not treat reinstalling system software as a casual way to undo an update. Sony warns that reinstalling deletes console data. Sony’s backup guidance also says that restoring a backup requires the same or a newer system-software version; that is not a promise that a backup can restore an older firmware. The ps5-linux project likewise states that an update is not a downgrade and says, “Obviously you cannot downgrade.” That is the project maintainer’s warning, not a comprehensive statement about every technical scenario.

Before making any change, distinguish a data backup from firmware recovery. A backup may help preserve eligible console data, but it does not establish that you can return the PS5 to an earlier system-software release. Read Sony’s PS5 system-software guidance and the project’s current instructions before proceeding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Back up data only if you are going beyond a version check

The version check itself needs no purchase or extra storage. If you decide to back up console data before further changes, Sony’s USB backup instructions specify FAT32 or exFAT formatting and warn that a USB drive formatted as USB extended storage for games cannot also be used for this backup. A drive’s capacity should be chosen for the data being backed up; a stated minimum for a separate project use is not a guarantee that it will hold your backup. See Sony’s PS5 USB backup instructions.

Does the emulator setup require a USB drive?

Not for checking the installed version. Hardware requirements apply only if you choose to follow a compatible project’s installation or backup procedure, and the exact requirements vary by purpose.

For its documented Linux setup, the ps5-linux README specifies a USB drive of at least 64 GB, preferably an external SSD, and a USB keyboard and mouse. That is the project maintainers’ stated requirement in the README snapshot checked October 30, 2026—not a Sony requirement for looking up firmware and not a universal emulator requirement. Confirm the current instructions and the compatibility of your particular console before buying or preparing storage. ps5-linux project README

Sony’s backup-drive formatting requirements serve a different purpose from a project’s Linux storage requirements. Do not assume one prepared drive can be used for both jobs without checking the instructions for each; in particular, Sony says USB extended storage formatted for game data cannot also serve as the USB backup drive.

Optional internal storage is a separate decision

The ps5-linux project describes optional dedicated Linux storage using an M.2 NVMe SSD with a heatsink. Treat that as an advanced, project-specific choice, not as part of the firmware check. Sony publishes its own expansion-storage specifications and recommends current system software for its supported installation workflow. An M.2 drive does not preserve an old firmware, create compatibility, or provide a rollback path. Verify the exact model, firmware, heatsink clearance, and project instructions before spending money.

What does the check cost?

Nothing. The Console Information path is built into the PS5 and requires no subscription, license, USB drive, keyboard, mouse, or internet purchase. Costs begin only if a compatible project calls for hardware or if you choose backup storage. The documented ps5-linux minimum is 64 GB, preferably an external SSD, but no fixed retail price is established here and capacity for a Sony backup depends on the amount of data on your console. Do not buy equipment until the project’s current instructions match your model and installed version.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Starting an update to discover the version: use Console Information instead of the update command.
  • Copying only the last digits: truncated strings make support requests and comparisons ambiguous.
  • Using Sony’s newest release as a compatibility test: a release-history entry is not proof of installation or project support.
  • Borrowing another project’s version list: requirements belong to a specific maintainer, build, and installation method.
  • Ignoring the model: original/Slim and Pro support can differ.
  • Assuming an update can be reversed: Sony’s reinstall process deletes data, and project documentation says an update is not a downgrade.
  • Confusing storage roles: a Linux boot drive, Sony backup drive, and USB extended game storage have different instructions and may not be interchangeable.
  • Buying hardware too early: the version lookup itself has no hardware requirement.

What is the safest order for checking before installation?

Use the version check as an information-gathering step, then make a separate decision about compatibility and any software changes. This sequence helps avoid confusing a displayed version with an offered update or with the requirements of a different project.

  1. Record the installed version. Open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information and copy the full string.
  2. Identify your model. Note whether the console is an original PS5, Slim, or Pro, because project support can differ by model.
  3. Identify the actual project. Confirm whether you mean a setup that runs on the PS5 or a PC emulator. Find the current documentation for the exact project and build.
  4. Match the requirements. Compare the recorded version and model with the project’s own supported-version list and installation prerequisites. Do not infer support from Sony’s newest release listing or another project’s list.
  5. Review the consequences before changing anything. Consider Sony’s current-software recommendation, the project’s stated limitations, and Sony’s backup and reinstall guidance. Do not proceed on the assumption that you can downgrade or restore older firmware.
  6. Prepare only the hardware the project actually requires. The version lookup needs nothing to buy; storage and peripherals are conditional on a compatible installation or backup procedure.

Sony’s PS5 Pro instruction manual states, “Always update to the latest version.” That is Sony’s system-software guidance for normal use; it does not show that a third-party project supports the newest release. Keep those two questions separate: what Sony recommends for the console, and what the project maintainers say their setup supports. Sony PS5 Pro instruction manual

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What can you conclude after the check?

You can identify and record the system-software version currently displayed by your PS5. You cannot conclude from that number alone that a particular emulator will work, that a version on Sony’s release-history page is installed on your machine, or that updating or reinstalling can be reversed. The next useful step is to compare your exact version and console model with the current documentation for the exact project you intend to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to connect my PS5 to the internet just to read its version?

Sony’s documented route reads the version from the console’s Console Information screen and does not include an online lookup step. An internet connection may matter for other tasks, such as obtaining software files, but it is not part of that version-check path.

Can a PS5 backup put my console back on older firmware?

Sony’s backup guidance says a restore requires the same or a newer system-software version, so a data backup should not be treated as a firmware rollback. Keep the backup’s purpose clear: preserving eligible data is different from restoring an earlier system-software release.

Does this check tell me whether a PC PS5 emulator will run?

No. This check reads the system software installed on PS5 hardware. A program running on a separate computer has its own requirements, which need to come from that program’s documentation.

Is Sony’s 26.07-14.20.00 release the version my PS5 needs?

Not necessarily. Sony’s US release-history page showed 26.07-14.20.00 at the top on October 30, 2026, but that listing does not prove it is installed on your console or that an emulator project supports it. Use the value shown in Console Information and the project’s own support list.

What if an emulator guide lists a short number such as 13.60?

Do not assume the short label maps to your full Sony version. Keep the complete string from Console Information and ask the project maintainer how its shorthand corresponds to Sony releases before treating it as a match.

Should I disable automatic updates permanently?

There is no universal safe setting. Sony recommends current software for security and normal use. Reviewing Download Update Files Automatically and Install Update Files Automatically can help you understand the controls, but delaying updates for a third-party project carries security and support tradeoffs and does not guarantee compatibility.

Can I use my game-storage USB drive for the backup?

Sony says USB extended storage formatted for game data cannot also be used for the PS5 USB backup. Use storage that meets Sony’s FAT32 or exFAT backup guidance and select capacity based on the data you need to preserve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to buy a 64GB USB drive just to check firmware?

No. The on-console version check is free and requires no accessories. The ps5-linux project’s 64 GB minimum applies only if you choose that project’s Linux setup; it is not a requirement for viewing Console Information.

Will reinstalling system software restore an emulator-compatible version?

Do not assume so. Sony warns that reinstalling deletes console data, and its backup guidance does not promise an older firmware restore. The ps5-linux documentation says an update is not a downgrade. Follow current Sony and project instructions only after understanding the data and compatibility consequences.

The Bottom Line

Record the complete version under Settings > System > System Software > Console Information, note whether your console is original, Slim, or Pro, and compare both details with the exact project’s current documentation. The check itself is free and read-only; updates, backups, storage, and installation changes are separate decisions with their own risks.
