You can find indie games on Steam without relying on personalized store recommendations: treat Steam as a searchable catalog, combine specific tags and filters, then check promising games through human Curators, Community discussions, developer information, and the game’s AI Content Disclosure. That process can help you find unusual games and identify disclosed player-facing generative-AI use. It cannot certify that a game was made entirely by humans; Steam does not offer that certification.
How do I find indie games on Steam without recommendations?
Start with the kind of game you want to play, not the broad label “indie.” Steam Search and tag pages let you build a pool manually, then you can investigate candidates instead of accepting a personalized feed’s ranking. Valve describes Steam discovery as a combination of personalized recommendations, Curator reviews, and search tools; you can use the latter two without treating the first as your guide.

Write down one concrete experience before opening Search: perhaps short narrative horror, turn-based tactics, cozy automation, local co-op, an experimental puzzle, or a hand-drawn adventure. This gives you better search terms than “indie” alone. A broad category can include games with very different mechanics, moods, and visual styles, and it says nothing conclusive about who made them or how.
Turn that description into a small set of tags: one for the main genre and one or two for a theme, style, perspective, or mechanic. For example, a reader looking for a compact, story-led horror game could combine relevant horror and narrative tags, then narrow further by a feature such as single-player. The exact useful terms depend on the experience; the point is to make the search specific enough to be useful without filtering away every possibility.

2. Combine tags with manual filters
Open Steam Search and apply the tags that describe the game you want. Add available filters for platform, language, price, release date, or features when they matter to you. Use exclusions for genres, features, or content you do not want. Steam documents these search controls and preference-based exclusions in its store search materials; tag documentation also explains that tags can narrow searches and affect related-game visibility.
A practical search recipe is:
- Core genre: choose the main kind of game, such as tactics, puzzle, or horror.
- Experience or mechanic: add one or two terms for the mood, structure, style, or way of playing you want.
- Constraint: filter for a platform or feature that matters, such as a supported operating system or local co-op.
- Scope: set a price or release window if it helps keep the results manageable.
- Exclusions: remove unwanted genres, multiplayer requirements, or mature content where Steam offers the relevant control.
These controls make the pool more manageable; they do not certify a result’s quality, creative process, or suitability. If a query produces too few results, remove one optional tag or filter at a time. If it produces too many, refine the experience tags or add a meaningful constraint before resorting to the broad Indie label.
3. Browse beyond the first results
Do not treat the first screen as a complete map of the search. Browse farther through the filtered results and open listings whose capsules, screenshots, descriptions, and tags suggest a distinctive idea. Those details are screening clues, not proof: a polished page does not establish a game’s authorship, and a sparse page does not by itself establish that a game lacks a thoughtful creative direction.
Keep a short list of candidates rather than deciding from a thumbnail. For each one, note what drew your attention and what you still need to verify: perhaps whether it supports solo play, whether the developer explains its design, or whether the AI disclosure describes generated content. This separates the initial discovery question—“is this worth a closer look?”—from the later verification question.
How can human Curators help me discover games?
Steam Curators offer a human perspective alongside search: follow people or groups whose stated interests match yours, then look for recommendations that explain why a game might suit you. A Curator’s endorsement is a lead to investigate, not an authorship audit or a guarantee that the game will fit your taste.
Choose Curators for their point of view
Read a Curator’s description and sample several recommendations before relying on its feed. A specialist who explains what makes a game distinctive may be more useful for a narrow interest than a broad account with little context. Follower count alone does not tell you how well a Curator’s taste matches yours. Valve’s Curator documentation frames the feature as a way for trusted voices to help players explore Steam; it also emphasizes matching recommendations to an audience.

Check the reason behind a recommendation
When a Curator points to a game, open the store page and see whether the explanation identifies something concrete: its mechanics, tone, subject, or particular appeal. If the recommendation gives no reason, treat it as a search lead and look for other evidence before adding the game to your shortlist. Steam says Curator recommendations can appear on tag and genre pages, so they can complement a manual search without requiring you to follow the store’s personalized ranking.
How do I use Community hubs and lists without getting misled?
Community hubs, discussion pages, user reviews, and user-created lists can expose games that did not surface in your first search. Use them to find suggestions around a more specific question—such as short solo horror games, one-person puzzle projects, or games known for hand-authored dialogue—then verify each promising suggestion on its official Steam page.
Look for useful evidence, not just enthusiasm
A detailed review is more informative when it explains what the player encountered and why the game worked or did not work for them. Recent posts can be especially useful when they address the current build; discussions may also identify the developer or describe the development process. A one-line compliment, copied store description, or unexplained list can help you discover a title, but it gives you little basis to judge it.
Community material is uneven, and a list’s presence on Steam does not make it an independent verification service. Check whether a post is recent enough to answer your question, whether it gives reasons you can assess, and whether its claims match the official listing. If a discussion says something important about the developer or the game’s content, look for confirmation on the store page or in developer updates rather than repeating the claim as established fact.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat should I check on a game’s store page?
Use the store page to verify the basics and decide what evidence exists about the people and process behind a candidate. The developer and publisher links, previous releases, update notes, community presence, reviews, and AI Content Disclosure each answer different questions; no single one establishes that every part of a game was made by humans.
Developer, publisher, and update information
Open the developer and publisher links and review the other releases and community activity associated with them. Update notes can show how a project has changed, while developer posts may provide context about its design or production. A solo developer, small team, or independent publisher may fit what you mean by “indie,” but those descriptions are not guarantees of human-only production.

Distinguish what the page directly says from what you infer. A named developer or a small catalogue can help you understand who is presenting the game, but neither proves that every art, audio, writing, localization, or coding task was completed without AI tools. If the production process matters to you, look for a specific statement from the developer rather than treating team size or branding as a substitute.
Reviews and community context
Read reviews for specific observations, not just their overall tone. Look for explanations of the play experience, references to the current version, and details that help answer your own question. Reviews and discussion can help you judge whether a listing is well described or whether a promised feature is present, but opinions about quality do not prove who created the underlying content.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How do I read Steam’s AI Content Disclosure?
Read the disclosure as a description of declared AI use, not as a certificate of complete human authorship. Valve’s Content Survey distinguishes pre-generated content created with AI tools during development from live-generated content produced while someone is playing. Valve says relevant disclosure information is shown so customers can understand how a game uses AI.
Record the scope the developer actually reports
If the page discloses AI-generated art, audio, writing, localization, code, or live-generated content, note the category and wording rather than broadening it into a claim about the whole game. A disclosure confined to one category is not evidence that all other parts were generated, nor does it establish that every other part was made entirely by humans. Be precise about whether the reported use is pre-generated during development or generated live during play.
Valve’s AI Content on Steam announcement says that much of a developer’s disclosure will appear on the store page so customers can understand how a game uses AI. That information is useful transparency, but its scope matters: Steam’s disclosure process is not a total-authorship certification. Do not present the presence of a disclosure as proof that AI dominates a game, and do not present the absence of one as proof that AI played no role.
Use defensible wording when no disclosure appears
If you find no visible disclosure on the store page, the careful statement is “no disclosed player-facing generative-AI use found.” Avoid “made entirely by humans” or “no AI used.” The former describes a much broader claim than the available evidence can support; the latter treats a missing disclosure as proof of absence.

This distinction matters if you are making a personal shortlist or sharing recommendations with others. Describe what you checked and what the page disclosed, rather than assigning an absolute label. A more accurate standard is that a game was found through human-curated discovery and has no disclosed player-facing generative-AI use on its Steam page—not that every production task is verified as human-made.
How can I keep a shortlist without depending on recommendations?
Use Steam’s Wishlist, Follow, and Ignore controls to preserve the results of your own search. They help you save games, follow announcements, or exclude unwanted titles from future recommendation and featured surfaces; using these controls does not require you to accept those surfaces as your discovery method.
- Save candidates you want to revisit. Add a promising listing to your Wishlist, and keep your own notes about why it made the cut or what remains uncertain.
- Follow projects when updates matter. Use Follow for games whose announcements or development updates you want to track.
- Exclude unwanted titles or surfaces. Use Ignore for games you do not want in your browsing, and use the available preference controls to exclude unwanted genres or features where relevant.
- Recheck before recommending. When you return to a saved game, review the current store page, recent updates, and disclosure rather than assuming old notes still describe the listing accurately.
The shortlist is a record of your choices, not an independent endorsement. Keep discovery notes separate from verification notes: “found through a specialist Curator” is a discovery detail; “the page disclosed live-generated dialogue” is a specific disclosure detail.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which Steam discovery method gives me the most control?
Steam Search gives you the most control over tags and filters, while Curators add explicit human judgment and Community spaces offer more breadth and current discussion. Each method has a different verification burden, so a strong process combines them rather than treating any one as proof.
| Method | Human judgment | Control | Niche depth | Freshness | Verification burden |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Search and tag pages | Low by themselves; you assess the listings | High: tags and available filters | Can be strong when tags are specific | Search results are browsable, but the page does not by itself establish development context | High: inspect each candidate |
| Steam Curators | High when recommendations explain their reasoning | Moderate: choose which voices to follow | Depends on the Curator’s focus | Check the recommendation and store page for current relevance | Moderate: verify the recommendation’s claims |
| Community hubs, reviews, and lists | Varies by contributor | Moderate: search or browse topics and lists | Potentially broad, including narrow interests | Varies; recent posts can address the current build | High: evaluate the source and confirm on the listing |
| External discovery sites | Varies by site and contributor | Varies | May surface games absent from your current Steam search | Check when its list or page was updated | High: treat as a lead and verify on Steam |
The comparison is about how to use each route, not a claim that one method reliably finds more good games. Search is useful when you know what experience you want; a Curator can introduce a considered recommendation; community discussion can provide context or reveal leads. External discovery sites can widen the search, but confirm relevant details against the official Steam page. Valve documentation covers Steam Search, tags, Curators, and store hubs; third-party discovery material is best treated as a starting point rather than authoritative proof.
What does “human-made indie game” mean in practice?
“Indie” and “human-made” describe different things. Indie is a loose description of a game or its publisher’s position; it does not certify a particular production process. “Human-made” can also mean different things to different readers, from human-led design to a requirement that no generative-AI tool touched any part of production.

Steam’s search and disclosure tools can support a narrower, more evidence-based decision. Search lets you choose a kind of experience; Curators and Community contributors can supply human recommendations; the store page can show developer information and declared AI use. Together these checks help you make a more deliberate choice, but they cannot establish an absolute claim about every task involved in production.
If you share a recommendation, state your evidence narrowly: for example, that you found the game through a Curator who explained its appeal, or that you found no disclosed player-facing generative-AI use on its Steam page. That tells other readers what you know without turning a small team, a positive review, or a missing disclosure into proof of total human authorship.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Steam tags prove that a game is really indie?
No. Tags help describe and filter a game, but a tag is not a formal classification of its publisher or development process. Use developer and publisher information for context, and avoid treating a label as proof of authorship.
Can I use an outside indie-game list to find Steam games?
Yes, as a source of leads, especially if it focuses on a narrow genre or audience you care about. Check each suggestion against its Steam listing and assess how recently the list was updated; an outside list is not an independent audit.
What wording is safest when I recommend a game with no AI disclosure?
Say that you found no disclosed player-facing generative-AI use on its Steam page. That describes the evidence you saw without claiming that every part of the game was created without AI.
