Use the SAM.gov Contract Awards API to identify contracts whose scheduled completion dates are approaching, then verify a possible recompete in SAM.gov Contract Opportunities and the buying agency’s forecast. The API is free at the public-data layer, but you need a SAM.gov account and API key, and request limits depend on your account status. A completion date is an early warning—not proof that an RFP will be issued. Agencies can exercise options, shorten or extend performance, use a bridge action, or decide not to recompete.
What is the best way to find expiring federal contracts before an RFP?
Build a repeatable monitor around SAM.gov award records. Query awards and indefinite-delivery vehicles (IDVs) with agency, NAICS, product or service code (PSC), PIID, awardee and date filters; save the results; compare each new snapshot with the previous one; and rank records by time remaining, incumbent, value, vehicle type and service code. Then check Contract Opportunities and agency forecasts for a follow-on notice.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This approach works because award data normally appears before a solicitation. It also avoids a common mistake: treating a contract’s end date as a guaranteed procurement event. The date tells you when the currently scheduled performance period ends, not what the contracting officer will do next.
Why does the current completion date matter?
The FPDS data dictionary defines currentCompletionDate as the completion date of the base contract plus options that have already been exercised. If a modification exercises another option, shortens performance or extends it, the scheduled completion date must be revised. That makes the field useful for pipeline monitoring, but only when you refresh it.

Keep both completion fields
| Field | How to use it | Important caution |
|---|---|---|
currentCompletionDate |
Primary near-term signal for work that is scheduled to finish. | It can move after a modification, so an old export can be stale. |
ultimateCompletionDate |
Retain as a second date for the record’s longer-range ceiling or planning context. | Do not substitute it for the currently scheduled date when creating alerts. |
periodOfPerformanceStartDate |
Shows when the recorded performance period began and helps calculate contract age. | It does not predict a follow-on by itself. |
lastDateToOrder |
Especially useful for IDVs, where orders may be placed before the vehicle’s ordering authority ends. | An IDV’s ordering deadline is not necessarily the end date of every order. |
For a simple alert, calculate the days between today and currentCompletionDate. Keep records with a negative result as recently completed items until you confirm that a modification or replacement record explains the change.
How do I get a free SAM.gov API key?
You need a SAM.gov user account and an API key issued for public API access. The data is publicly searchable after sign-in, but API requests are authenticated and rate-limited.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Create or use a SAM.gov account. Register with an email address you control and complete the sign-in and identity steps SAM.gov presents.
- Open the account’s API-key management area. In your signed-in profile or workspace, use the option for creating a public API key. Copy the key when it is displayed and store it in a password manager or a secrets store, not in a shared spreadsheet.
- Record the key’s account context. Note whether the account is a non-federal user without a SAM.gov role, a non-federal user with a role, or a federal personal-key user. That status determines the documented daily request allowance.
- Make a small test request. Start with a narrow agency or date filter and JSON output. Confirm that the response contains award or IDV records and the completion-date fields before scheduling a larger extraction.
Do not publish the key in source code, a browser-side application or a ticket. If it is exposed, revoke or rotate it through the account’s key-management controls and update your scheduled job.
What are the API request limits?
GSA’s API documentation lists these default daily limits for 2026:
| User type | Default daily limit | What it means for a monitor |
|---|---|---|
| Non-federal user with no SAM.gov role | 10 requests per day | Use highly selective filters and one consolidated daily pull. |
| Non-federal user with a SAM.gov role | 1,000 requests per day | Supports multiple agencies, codes or daily incremental jobs. |
| Federal user with a personal key | 1,000 requests per day | Allows substantially more partitioned queries than the public no-role allowance. |
These are default limits stated by GSA for 2026, not a promise that every account or future policy will have identical quotas. A job that receives a rate-limit response should back off, preserve the last successful snapshot and retry later instead of repeatedly sending requests.
How should I design a query for expiring contracts?
Start broad enough to find the relevant incumbents, then narrow with structured conditions. The Contract Awards API supports award and IDV records, JSON responses, CSV or JSON extracts, pagination and structured filtering.
Choose the population
- Agency: Select the contracting department or agency responsible for the work. Use the agency identifiers supplied by SAM.gov rather than relying only on free-text names.
- NAICS: Filter by the industry classification when you know the market segment.
- PSC: Add product or service codes to separate similar NAICS populations and reduce irrelevant results.
- PIID: Search a known procurement instrument when you are tracking one incumbent or a family of related actions.
- Awardee: Use the incumbent’s legal awardee name to find related awards, but check spelling and legal-entity changes.
- Date range: Apply a window around
currentCompletionDateor retrieve a wider set and calculate the window locally. A wider initial pull is useful when you are building a baseline.
Retrieve pages, not just the first response
Large result sets are paginated. Continue until every page is collected, and save the query parameters, retrieval timestamp and page count with the data. Otherwise, a first-page-only export can make a market look smaller than it is.
Prefer machine-readable output
JSON is convenient for an automated pipeline; CSV or JSON extracts are useful for analysts who need to inspect or archive a complete pull. Whichever format you choose, preserve the original response fields alongside your normalized columns so that a later audit can show what SAM.gov returned at that time.

How do I build a reliable expiration monitor?
A monitor is more than a one-time search. It is a dated series of observations that shows when a completion date, value or award status changes.
1. Create a baseline snapshot
Run the narrowest query that covers your target agencies and codes, then save every returned record with a UTC retrieval timestamp. At minimum, retain the award or vehicle identifier, agency, awardee, value fields returned by the API, vehicle type, NAICS, PSC, all four date fields and the source query.
2. Normalize dates and identifiers
Parse dates into one timezone and keep the original text as a separate field. Use the PIID or other stable award identifier as the record key; do not use the awardee name alone, because one company can hold multiple instruments and names can change.
3. Re-read records on a schedule
Run at least weekly while building coverage. Move to daily snapshots for records inside your action window or for markets where modifications occur frequently. A new snapshot should update the existing record, not create an apparently new contract every time the API returns it.
4. Diff each snapshot
Flag changes to currentCompletionDate, ultimateCompletionDate, award value, award status, awardee, contracting office and vehicle type. A date moving later is a real change in your opportunity calendar; a date moving earlier can indicate that the recompete window is closer than your previous report suggested.
5. Keep an audit trail
Store the raw response, query filters, API-key account category, retrieval time and any transformations. This lets you distinguish a genuine modification from a parser error and helps explain why a record disappeared from a later result set.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHow should I rank which contracts to pursue first?
Use a transparent score rather than sorting only by the nearest date. A small agency services contract ending soon may be less actionable than a larger, strategically aligned vehicle ending later.
| Factor | Practical question | Suggested treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Time remaining | How many days until the current completion date? | Give greater urgency to shorter intervals, but keep recently modified records in a review queue. |
| Incumbent | Is the awardee identifiable and do you understand its position? | Use the awardee as a research lead, not as proof that the company will retain the work. |
| Total contract value | Does the opportunity justify the capture effort? | Normalize values consistently and record the value type returned by the API. |
| Agency | Is the buying office one your team can support? | Weight agencies by mission fit, past performance access and geography. |
| Vehicle type | Is this a stand-alone award, task order or IDV? | Interpret the completion and ordering dates differently for each type. |
| NAICS and PSC | Does the work match your actual capability? | Use both codes where available to reduce false positives. |
A useful internal output is a ranked queue with three labels: watch for a distant date, validate for a near date without a notice, and act when a follow-on opportunity or forecast corroborates the award signal.

How do I tell whether an RFP is actually coming?
Cross-check award data against two separate SAM.gov signals: Contract Opportunities and agency procurement forecasts. Look for a notice, sources-sought posting, presolicitation, draft solicitation, solicitation number, forecast entry or a change in the contracting office.
Use Contract Opportunities for public notices
Search by agency, NAICS, PSC, incumbent name, PIID references and distinctive work terms. A notice may not use the incumbent’s name, so code and agency filters are often more dependable than keywords alone. Record the notice type, posted date, response deadline, contracting office and any stated contract number.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use forecasts for earlier planning signals
Forecasts can appear before a formal notice, but they are planning documents and may change. Match a forecast’s agency, estimated quarter, NAICS or PSC and description to the award record. Treat a close match as corroboration, not as a commitment to issue an RFP.
Check the vehicle relationship
An IDV may support multiple orders, and the end of the vehicle’s ordering period does not automatically mean every order ends that day. Compare the IDV’s lastDateToOrder with the specific order’s completion date and investigate both records before assigning a recompete date.
Which monitoring method should I use?
No single source answers every question. The strongest workflow combines the API’s structured history with the two public opportunity signals.
| Method | Freshness | Coverage | Query control | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Contract Awards API snapshot | Depends on your daily or weekly refresh and modification lag. | Awards and IDVs available in the public data; some DoD records remain unrevealed. | Agency, NAICS, PSC, PIID, awardee and date conditions, with pagination. | Building a ranked incumbent and expiration inventory. |
| Contract Opportunities search | Updates as notices are posted. | Public notices, not a complete list of future procurements. | Notice and solicitation filters plus keywords. | Confirming that a follow-on action has entered the public process. |
| Agency forecast | Published on each agency’s planning schedule and subject to change. | Only agencies and programs that publish forecast information. | Usually agency, period, code and description fields. | Finding planning intent before a formal notice. |
| One-time manual search | Fresh only at the moment you search. | Limited by what the analyst remembers to check. | Flexible but difficult to reproduce. | Validating a lead or investigating an exception. |
What data is missing or delayed?
Public users do not receive DoD awards that remain unrevealed within 90 days of signing. That restriction means a clean API result can still omit relevant defense activity. State the coverage limitation in internal reports and avoid claiming that an empty result proves no contract exists.
SAM.gov completed the public FPDS transition and decommissioned ezSearch on February 24, 2026. The older FPDS Atom feed is being replaced by the SAM.gov Contract Awards API. For current federal contract information, GSA says, “SAM.gov is currently the authoritative source for information about federal contracts.”
Historical exports can also be misleading when a modification has not yet appeared in your stored copy. The practical fix is to refresh records, retain snapshots and show the retrieval date beside every alert.

Why might an expiring contract never produce a new RFP?
An approaching completion date is an indicator, not a procurement promise. The agency may exercise an available option, extend or shorten the current action, consolidate the requirement, move it to another vehicle, use a bridge arrangement, cancel the requirement or pursue a different acquisition strategy.
- Do not tell a client that a recompete is certain solely because the date is near.
- Look for a notice, forecast entry or contracting-office evidence before assigning high confidence.
- Keep the award in the monitor after the date passes until a modification, replacement award or closure explains the outcome.
- Document uncertainty in the record: “award signal,” “forecast signal,” “public notice” and “confirmed solicitation” are different states.
What does a practical weekly operating routine look like?
A small business can run the process without exceeding the no-role public quota if it plans requests carefully.

The response is empty
Check the date format, agency identifier, code values and pagination parameters. Then run a deliberately narrow query for a known PIID or awardee. An empty public result can also reflect unrevealed DoD data rather than a nonexistent award.
The same contract appears many times
Deduplicate by the stable award or vehicle identifier and retain modification details as changes to that record. Do not collapse distinct task orders merely because they share an incumbent or parent vehicle.
The completion date changed unexpectedly
Compare the current and previous raw records, then inspect modifications and option activity. Update the alert from the newest current date and keep the old value in the audit history.

The job hits a limit
Stop sending requests, wait for the quota window to reset, and resume from the last completed page. Reduce overlapping queries and cache unchanged results. Never solve a rate-limit problem by distributing one key across uncontrolled scripts.
A notice cannot be matched to an award
Search the agency, NAICS, PSC, descriptive terms and contracting office separately. Notices may omit the PIID or use a different title, and an IDV or task-order relationship can make a direct name match impossible.

What should a decision-ready report contain?
For each lead, show the award identifier, agency, awardee, vehicle type, NAICS, PSC, current and ultimate completion dates, period start, last date to order when relevant, reported value, snapshot date, source query and confidence status. Add links or identifiers for any matching Contract Opportunities notice or forecast entry when your internal system supports them.
Include a short change log: previous completion date, new completion date, date observed and the modification or notice that explains it. This prevents a sales team from acting on an obsolete deadline and gives procurement analysts a defensible record of how the lead was identified.
Is the free API enough for serious capture work?
It is enough to build a disciplined public-data monitor, especially when your target set is narrow and your snapshots are scheduled. The free layer provides structured award and IDV records, date fields, filters, pagination and machine-readable output.
It is not a complete substitute for contracting-office research. Public rate limits constrain broad, high-frequency crawling; unrevealed DoD data creates a coverage gap; and the API does not announce a future solicitation merely because a date is approaching. Serious capture work therefore combines the API with notices, forecasts, historical snapshots and human validation.
What changed after the FPDS transition?
Use the SAM.gov Contract Awards API for current public award data rather than building a new workflow around legacy FPDS endpoints or ezSearch. The public FPDS transition was completed before ezSearch was decommissioned on February 24, 2026, and the FPDS Atom feed is being replaced by the SAM.gov API.
That change makes migration planning important: update saved queries, parsers, field mappings and schedules; verify that your system stores both completion dates; and test pagination and rate-limit handling against the current API behavior.

What is the most defensible conclusion?
The fastest credible path to an early federal-contract lead is a dated SAM.gov award snapshot, refreshed often enough to catch modifications, filtered to the agencies and codes you can serve, and cross-checked against Contract Opportunities and forecasts. Rank by more than expiration date, preserve the raw records and label the result as an early signal until a public notice confirms a follow-on action.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I alert on the ultimate completion date instead of the current completion date?
Use the current completion date for near-term alerts. Keep the ultimate date as planning context, because it does not replace the latest scheduled date after exercised options or other modifications.
How far in advance should I start watching an expiring award?
There is no universal federal lead-time rule between an expiration date and a follow-on RFP. Start with a broad historical window, then use your own snapshots to learn how each agency and vehicle behaves.
Why does an IDIQ look like it has several different expiration dates?
An IDIQ can have a vehicle ordering deadline and separate orders with their own performance periods. Review the parent IDV, its last date to order and each order record instead of treating every date as the same event.
Can public SAM.gov data prove that an incumbent will be recompeted?
No. Award records identify the current action and its scheduled dates, while a recompete depends on an agency decision. A forecast or public notice raises confidence, but only an actual solicitation establishes an open competition.
