- Edition: Compare the standard game with bundles, deluxe editions and add-on packages. Downloading an add-on does not necessarily install the base game.

The PS5 begins installation automatically after the download starts. If the title has both PS5 and PS4 versions, select the edition you intend to install from the game’s available options. The game must be owned or otherwise entitled on the account you are using; buying on a different account will not make the license appear in another account’s collection. How do I download a new game on PS4?
On PS4, purchased games are in a different location:
- Open Library from the PS4 home screen.
- Select Purchased.
- Choose the game.
- Select Download.
Installation proceeds automatically after the download begins. If a purchase is missing, confirm that the PS4 is signed in to the account that completed the transaction and that the title is a digital purchase rather than a disc license. Can I start a PlayStation download from a web browser?
Yes. A signed-in web store can send a purchased game to a compatible console, but remote downloading depends on prior console setup. In the web store, open your avatar, choose Game Library, select Purchased, choose the game and select Download.

For a PS5, Sony requires the console to be logged in with the same account used by the web store. For a PS4, the console must be activated as that account’s primary PS4. Immediate remote downloading also requires automatic-download settings; without them, the download may wait until the console is next turned on. Can I download a PlayStation game from my phone?
Use the PlayStation App to shop and send an owned game to a paired console. In the app, open PlayStation Store to find a release. For an owned title, open Game Library > Purchased, select the game, then choose Download or Download to Console; Sony uses both button labels in its support material, so the wording can vary by app version.
Before sending the command, pair the intended console through Settings > Pair Console to App. Use the same PlayStation Network account on the app and console, and allow the paired PS5 or primary PS4 to stay connected to the internet in rest mode. Automatic downloads must be configured for an immediate remote start; otherwise the command can remain pending until the console is switched on. Follow the current steps in PlayStation App features.
App catalogs are regional. Sony notes on its PlayStation App page that content and displayed titles can vary by country, so a game visible in the US app may not appear in another region.

What storage do PS5 downloads need?
A new game must fit on the destination storage before installation can complete. If the internal space is full, delete or move content you no longer need, or add supported storage. Sony’s PS5 M.2 specification requires a PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe drive with a Key M connector, capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB, suitable physical dimensions and effective heat dissipation. Sony recommends sequential read performance of at least 5,500 MB/s. M.2 SATA drives are unsupported, and Sony does not guarantee that every third-party drive meeting the written specifications will work.
A compatible M.2 SSD can store, download and launch PS5 games directly. USB extended storage works differently: it can hold PS5 game data, but PS5 games must be copied back to the console’s internal storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before they can be played. PS4 games can be played directly from supported USB extended storage. Sony states: “You can play PS4 games directly from your USB extended storage.” Read the installation requirements at PS5 M.2 SSD support and the USB rules at USB extended storage on PS5 consoles.
Do not select an accessory solely because its capacity appears large. Check the exact drive dimensions, cooling solution and PS5 compatibility against Sony’s specification; the 5,500 MB/s figure is a manufacturer recommendation, not a guarantee of compatibility or a measured game-loading result.
What if a purchased game will not download?
Work through the account, service, queue and storage checks in that order. Most failures become easier to identify once you establish whether the purchase is present in the owning account and whether the console has room to install it.
- Confirm the account and transaction. Sign in with the account that made the purchase and check the transaction history or library. A game bought on another account will not appear as owned on this one.
- Check PlayStation service status. A store or download outage can prevent a valid license from appearing or stop a queue from progressing.
- Inspect the download queue. If an item is stalled, pause it and resume it. This refreshes the queue without deleting the game.
- Check free space. Make room on the internal drive or the selected M.2 destination. USB storage may hold PS5 data but cannot run the PS5 version directly.
- Re-download from the library. If a purchased PS5 game was deleted, select it again in Games home > Game Library > Your Collection and choose Download. Deleting and reinstalling is a recovery option for a missing or damaged installation, not a requirement for every stalled download.

How should I handle a pre-order that has not released?
Keep a pre-order separate from a released digital game. The listing’s release date appears beneath the title, and the automatic download—when available and configured—starts when the content becomes available. It does not guarantee early access, and Sony does not say that every pre-order supports pre-loading.
If the date has passed but no download starts, verify that the console is connected, the correct account owns the order, automatic downloads are enabled, and enough storage is available. A pre-order can also include multiple content items with different availability dates, so read the listing rather than assuming every bonus or add-on arrives with the base game.
Why might a new release be missing from my store?
Regional catalog rules are the first possibility. The US store, another country’s store and the PlayStation App do not necessarily show identical products or release timing. Confirm that your account and store region match the market in which you expect to buy the game.
Other explanations include a title being listed under a different edition name, an upcoming release still marked as a pre-order, or a platform-specific version being hidden behind an edition selector. Search the exact title, open the full product page, and verify the platform before concluding that the release is unavailable.
How do I avoid downloading the wrong edition?
Use the product page and the library’s edition selector instead of downloading the first tile that matches the title. Confirm the console badge (PS5 or PS4), the edition name and whether the item is the base game, a bundle or an add-on.
