Choose a role and a style of play before choosing a job. Pick tank if you want to hold enemy attention and withstand damage, healer if you want to restore and protect allies, or DPS if you want to focus on attacks. Then compare how each job handles range, movement, casting, recovery and party support—and check when its key actions unlock. You do not need a special “solo job” to quest alone: FFXIV supports solo questing, NPC support for certain duties, and matchmaking for group content.
This guide reflects Square Enix’s Patch 7.5 job overview and game manual information available on October 30, 2026. Job actions, duty eligibility and purchase entitlements can change with updates, so verify current details before making a plan.

How should I choose an FFXIV job?
Start with the responsibility you want in a group, then narrow the choice by the way you like to fight. In FFXIV, tanks take enemy attention, healers restore and protect allies, and DPS deal damage. The official job guide divides DPS into melee, physical ranged and magical ranged. These roles describe different jobs in group play; they do not mean that one is automatically the best choice for solo quests.
Ask yourself four questions:
- What do I want to pay attention to? Tanking means handling enemy attention and damage; healing means watching allies as well as attacking; DPS centers on attacks.
- How close do I want to be? Melee jobs work at close range and emphasize combos and positioning. Physical ranged jobs attack from a distance and support companions. Magical ranged jobs use spells and have to account for casting-time movement constraints.
- Do I want personal recovery or party support? A self-heal or barrier can appeal when questing alone, while a party heal, damage benefit or protective action may appeal in group duties. Those are different preferences, not separate “solo” and “group” job categories.
- What can I actually use at my current level? A job’s later-level actions may be important to its feel, but they are not available from the start. Compare the actions you have now with the ones you are working toward.
There is no supported universal ranking for fastest soloing, highest damage or best first job in the available official material. A practical shortlist is more useful than a tier list: select a role you are curious about, compare a few jobs within it, and try them in low-pressure content before deciding.

Which tank should I try if I want to survive while questing?
Warrior and Paladin illustrate two different kinds of recovery and protection. Their documented actions are useful comparison points, not proof that one survives every encounter better or completes solo content faster.

These examples come from Square Enix’s Warrior and Paladin job guides. The level numbers matter: an action listed at level 82 is not an early-quest tool. Also make sure you are looking at the PvE action list. The Warrior guide has a separate PvP section with an identically named Bloodwhetting action; this article’s level-82 reference is the PvE action.
For solo play, a tank’s role is still its group role: holding enemy attention and withstanding damage. Personal recovery may be appealing, but it does not turn a tank into a required solo pick. Choose tank because you want to play that role, not because you assume other jobs cannot quest alone.
What is a good first healer if I also want to run dungeons?
White Mage and Scholar are two healer options with different documented examples. Both are healers in group content, and neither should be treated as a way to avoid paying attention to allies.
- White Mage: Its prerequisite class is Conjurer. Its kit includes healing and offensive spells, so the comparison is not simply “heal instead of attack.” See the official White Mage guide.
- Scholar: Its prerequisite class is Arcanist. The faerie Eos automatically heals damaged party members when set to guard, but that does not remove the player’s responsibility to heal and support the group. See the official Scholar guide.
If healing sounds appealing, consider whether you would enjoy monitoring allies while also contributing damage. A pet’s automatic healing is one feature to consider, not a substitute for learning the healer role. You can begin with quests and training, then take the job into an eligible NPC-supported dungeon before deciding whether you want to heal alongside other players.

Which DPS job fits solo and group play?
Choose the DPS category that matches your preferred distance and movement, then compare individual job tools. The official job overview describes melee as close-range combat built around combos and positioning, physical ranged as distance attacks plus support for companions, and magical ranged as spell use with casting-time movement constraints.

These tools come from Square Enix’s official battle job overview and the relevant Summoner, Red Mage, Bard and Dancer guides. They show examples of job identity; they do not establish a damage ranking, guarantee a faster matchmaking queue, or make any DPS job mandatory for a party.
In particular, do not assume a later-level tool is available when you first unlock or try a job. Red Mage gets Vercure at level 54 and Verraise at level 64, while Summoner’s Resurrection is also a job action to check against your current level. Make your decision from the actions you can use now as well as the role you expect to grow into.
Can I play FFXIV solo without choosing a tank?
Yes. Solo questing does not require a tank job. For progression duties that support it, Duty Support lets you bring NPCs instead of queuing with other players; for other group duties, Duty Finder can match you with players. The important limit is that Duty Support applies only to listed eligible duties, not every dungeon, trial or raid.
Square Enix’s Duty Support manual says the system lets players bring certain NPCs into instanced dungeons required for progression without queuing with other players. The word “certain” matters: check the manual’s eligible-duty list rather than assuming all group content is available with NPCs.

Duty Finder and Duty Support are different systems. The party manual describes Duty Finder as matching players without requiring a preformed party. A light party has four players, and a full party has eight; ordinary duty registration generally has role requirements, with exceptions noted in the manual. Those party sizes describe group formats, not a requirement to find friends before using matchmaking.
Unrestricted Party is another separate option for eligible duties: it can remove normal role and minimum-size requirements, but enemies give no EXP with that setting. It is therefore not a replacement for ordinary progression or Duty Support. Check the specific duty’s eligibility and the game’s current manual before relying on it.
How can I try a job before committing to it?
Use a gradual trial instead of deciding from a high-level action list. This sequence follows Square Enix’s descriptions of its training and duty systems; it is a practical recommendation, not a claim that every player will prefer the same route.
- Choose one role to explore. Decide whether tank, healer or DPS responsibility sounds most appealing. For DPS, narrow further to melee, physical ranged or magical ranged.
- Use Hall of the Novice. The game’s training content introduces combat basics for roles. See the official game manual for training and gameplay information.
- Try the job in open-world quests. Pay attention to how its current-level actions feel, including range, movement, casting and recovery. Do not judge it by an action that unlocks much later.
- Try an eligible Duty Support instance. NPCs let you enter certain progression dungeons without queuing with other players. Check the eligible list first.
- Use Duty Finder if you want to learn the group responsibility. Matchmaking gives you a way to enter duties with other players without assembling a preformed party. For a tank or healer, this is where you can learn how the role fits into a group; for DPS, it is where you can experience group positioning and support features in context.
- Reassess as actions unlock. A job can feel different as its kit grows. Compare your actual available actions with later milestones, and revisit your shortlist when you reach them.
The aim is not to find a job that eliminates every challenge. It is to find a role and style you are willing to practice, while understanding which parts of its advertised kit are available at your current level.

Check your game licenses and the job’s classification before building a leveling plan. Expansion access and limited-job restrictions can change what a player can unlock and which duties a job can enter.

Square Enix’s Patch 7.5 access statement says the free trial and Starter Edition include A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood and Shadowbringers through level 80. The official product page distinguishes the content included with later editions and expansions. Its comparison information is dated April 2026, so check the current terms for your platform and registered account instead of assuming a job or expansion is included.
The official battle overview identifies Blue Mage and Beastmaster as limited jobs. Do not plan either as if it were a standard all-purpose main for normal Duty Finder progression. Beastmaster’s official guide requires a registered Dawntrail product key, starts the job at level 1, lists a level-50 cap, and excludes Duty Roulettes among other activities. Recheck the current Beastmaster guide for the full restrictions. These caveats are especially important if your goal is a conventional tank, healer or DPS path through ordinary group duties.
The official job overview is labeled Patch 7.5 and includes adjustment notes, while the game manual reports an October 13, 2026 update. Actions, duty eligibility and access terms may change; check the linked official pages again after major patches, especially before purchasing an expansion or committing to a specific unlock.

How do controls affect job choice?
Controls are a comfort factor, not a job requirement or combat upgrade. Square Enix documents both mouse-and-keyboard controls and gamepad operation, including the cross hotbar and XInput compatibility. If you already have suitable controls, there is no need to buy a controller to choose a job; if you are unsure about your preferred input style, the official operation manual explains the supported options.
Whatever controls you use, the more important choice is whether you enjoy the job’s demands: close positioning, casting movement constraints, monitoring party health, holding enemy attention or balancing damage with support. Try the same shortlist through quests and eligible duties before treating a control preference as a reason to rule out an entire role.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a controller to play Final Fantasy XIV?
No. Square Enix documents mouse-and-keyboard controls as well as gamepad controls, including a cross hotbar and XInput compatibility. A controller is optional and does not unlock a job or improve its combat actions.
Can a limited job be my normal Duty Finder main?
Limited jobs have restrictions that distinguish them from standard all-purpose jobs. For example, Beastmaster’s official guide excludes Duty Roulettes among other activities, so read the current job guide before choosing one for ordinary group progression.

Does the free trial include Shadowbringers?
Square Enix’s Patch 7.5 statement says the free trial and Starter Edition include content through level 80 across A Realm Reborn, Heavensward, Stormblood and Shadowbringers. Verify current terms for your account and platform because edition details can change.
Does unrestricted party mode give experience?
No. The party manual says enemies give no EXP when Unrestricted Party is enabled. The option can remove normal role and minimum-size requirements for eligible duties, but it is not an equivalent to regular progression.
