For straightforward handheld-to-TV play, buy the native Final Fantasy Resonance edition for Switch 2: its reviewed build targets 60 fps, starts faster from the dashboard, and needs almost no graphics setup. Choose Steam Deck instead if you want PC-style options, a documented way to trade frame rate for battery life, or access to adjustable display and control settings. The Deck review found roughly 60 fps at 720p on High, with brief dips during heavy spell effects, and measured more than 3.5 hours after applying a 45-fps cap. A game-specific Switch 2 runtime has not been established, so neither platform can honestly be declared the battery winner. The most important buying decision is edition selection: the older Switch software remains a 30-fps build on Switch 2, has no planned upgrade pack, and does not transfer saves to or from the native Switch 2 release.

Which edition should you buy?
Buy the native Switch 2 version if you own Nintendo’s newer console. It is the edition reviewed as a 60-fps target and is the one designed for Switch 2 hardware. The separate older Switch release is not a cheaper route to that performance: on Switch 2 it remains capped at 30 fps, and Nintendo says there is no planned upgrade pack and no save transfer between the two editions.

Native Switch 2 release
Square Enix lists the game for Switch 2, Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with release dated October 22, 2026. The native Switch 2 edition supports TV, tabletop, and handheld modes. Its estimated download size is 11.9 GB, so internal storage may be enough for the game but should be checked against other installed titles.
The physical native release is identified by the firsthand comparison as a Game-Key Card. A Game-Key Card is therefore a purchase-format detail, not a performance mode: it still represents the Switch 2 edition, while the conventional physical Switch card is the older 30-fps software.

Older Switch release
Nintendo’s product notice for the Switch edition states: “There are no plans to sell an upgrade pack to upgrade the Nintendo Switch™ version to the Nintendo Switch™ 2 version.” Nintendo also lists no save transfer in either direction. If a retailer lists only “Switch” without clearly identifying the Switch 2 edition, verify the platform label before ordering.
How does performance compare between Switch 2 and Steam Deck?
The native Switch 2 build aims at 60 fps with fixed-console simplicity. Steam Deck reaches approximately 60 fps at its reviewed 720p High default, but gives you controls for frame caps, shadows, post-processing, anti-aliasing, textures, window mode, and vertical sync. Neither figure is a promise of a locked frame rate in every effect-heavy scene or in every future build.

The frame-rate and loading figures above come from Mikhail Madnani’s 2026 full-game comparison at RPG Site. The 60-fps label describes what that review targeted and observed, not an official technical specification from Square Enix.
Switch 2: simpler, but not necessarily sharper
Switch 2’s advantage is consistency of setup. Select the game, wake the console, and play with no per-title graphics profile to maintain. The comparison observed a 1080p interface while the gameplay image itself appeared sub-native, with softer ground textures than on the PC handheld build. That distinction matters on a large television: a 1080p menu does not prove that every scene is rendered internally at 1080p.
The Switch 2 build did not expose a separate quality/performance mode in the reviewed version. Madnani summarized that limitation by writing, “I just wish we had a quality/performance mode option on Switch 2.” It is an assessment of that build, not a promise that Square Enix will never add a mode.
Steam Deck: more levers, more decisions
Deck starts from a 720p default and High quality in the reviewed build. Most scenes sit near 60 fps, while particle-heavy spells can push the frame rate into the 50s. The adjustable shadow setting is the most useful practical lever: the comparison recommends Middle shadows for a steadier 60-fps experience.

Do not buy an OLED Deck expecting a consistent 90-fps presentation. The review did not find that target dependable for this game; a 60-Hz cap is the sensible ceiling when smoothness and frame pacing matter more than experimenting with an occasional higher refresh rate.
How do I configure the Steam Deck for a steadier 60 fps?
Start with the reviewed High preset at 720p, then change only the settings that address the behavior you see. This keeps image quality close to the default while avoiding unnecessary reductions.
- Open the game’s graphics menu. Leave the resolution at 1280×720 (the reviewed 720p default) and begin with the High preset.
- Set shadows to Middle. The comparison identifies shadows as the practical adjustment for reducing dips when large spell effects fill the screen.
- Use a 60-fps cap. On an OLED model, set the display refresh to 60 Hz rather than chasing 90 fps that the game does not hold consistently.
- Keep V-sync and the frame cap consistent. Changing both repeatedly makes it harder to tell whether a hitch comes from the scene or from conflicting limits.
- Check a demanding battle. If effects still push the frame rate into the 50s, lower post-processing or anti-aliasing one step at a time. The reviewed sources do not establish a single universal setting combination for every Deck variant.
Steam Deck’s menu also exposes window mode, textures, post-processing, anti-aliasing, and shadows. The exact top-quality label is not consistent across the published reviews: RPG Site calls it Max, while Steam Deck HQ calls it Ultra. Treat those words as menu labels from different descriptions, not as proof that two presets are identical.
Can Steam Deck extend this game’s battery runtime?
Yes, a published Steam Deck review documented a meaningful change when the frame rate was capped, but its result applies to that reviewer’s configuration rather than every Deck. Steam Deck HQ reported roughly two hours in a faster configuration and more than 3.5 hours after using a 45-fps cap with top quality settings.

Steam Deck HQ’s full game review, including the 45-fps result, is at steamdeckhq.com. Its table and prose use slightly different wattage ranges, so they should be quoted in their original context rather than combined into a new average.
Nintendo’s Switch 2 specifications list the console-wide 2–6.5-hour range at Nintendo.com. That number covers different games and power demands. It cannot be compared directly with a Resonance-only Deck test.

No controlled, game-specific Switch 2 runtime using the same brightness, wireless state, frame cap, hardware variant, and gameplay route as the Deck measurement has been established. The honest conclusion is conditional: Deck has a documented battery-tuning method, while Switch 2 has no comparable published runtime for this title.
What controls do the two versions support?
Both versions are built for conventional gamepad play. Switch 2 includes Joy-Con 2 and supports the optional Switch 2 Pro Controller; Steam lists full controller support and Deck Verified status for the PC edition. The difference is not whether a controller works, but how much optional input hardware each platform offers around the game.

- Nintendo lists handheld, tabletop, and TV modes, making the same save available across those physical setups on the native edition.
The available evidence does not show that Resonance uses a special gyro, mouse, or button-specific feature. Buy a Pro Controller for its ergonomics or extra remappable buttons, not because the game requires it.

Which platform is better for TV and tabletop play?
Switch 2 is the easier hybrid console. Its TV, tabletop, and handheld modes are part of the native product design, and Joy-Con 2 controllers are already included. Steam Deck can also serve as a TV system, but external-display play adds a dock or adapter, a power arrangement, and possible controller-selection steps in the Quick Access Menu.
For a living-room setup that should work with minimal configuration, Switch 2 has the clearer path. For a player who already uses a Deck dock and wants to reuse PC controllers or adjust the frame cap before moving to the television, Deck’s flexibility may outweigh the extra setup.

Which one looks better on its built-in screen?
The answer depends on whether you value a fixed console presentation or PC-style image controls. Does either version start or load faster?
In one early-game internal-storage comparison, Switch 2 reached the title screen in 11 seconds versus 22 seconds for Steam Deck. Loading an early save favored Deck slightly at 2–3 seconds versus 3–4 seconds on Switch 2. Switch 2 storage
Nintendo gives the native Switch 2 edition an estimated 11.9-GB file size. Switch 2 storage expansion uses microSD Express; an ordinary Switch microSD card is not the supported expansion format for Switch 2 game storage. A card sized for a broader library can therefore be useful, but it is not required solely because of this game if internal free space is available.

Steam Deck storage
The Deck’s storage choice depends on the model and the rest of your PC library. Valve’s product information distinguishes OLED models with a 50-Wh battery from LCD models with a 40-Wh battery and lists a UHS-I microSD slot. The Deck review’s battery result should not be transferred from one hardware variant to another without considering screen, battery, and power differences.
Steam’s listing also says first-time setup requires an active internet connection. That requirement is separate from controller support and should be planned for if the Deck will be configured away from home.
Which should you choose: Switch 2 or Steam Deck?
Choose the native Switch 2 edition when:
- You want the least complicated route from handheld to TV or tabletop play.
- You prefer a 60-fps target without adjusting a graphics profile.
- You already have Joy-Con 2 and do not want to buy a separate controller.
- Faster dashboard-to-title startup in the published comparison matters to you.
