The important distinction is that “local AI” describes the creator’s local development setup: the hosted version is configured to send AI requests to Cloudflare Workers AI, so it should not be treated as an on-device or fully offline AI app. Its creator describes the features and reports local tests, but says successful hosted AI inference still needed end-to-end verification.

These are features described by the creator; their current operation has not been independently confirmed. An earlier creator post also mentions photos or sketches, but that is not enough to establish that photo attachments work in the hosted interface.
The distinction matters if you are choosing a tool for a specific purpose. FieldNote is presented as a way to preserve your own observations and reflect on them—not as a field guide, a species-verification service or a wildlife-identification system. Its value, if the described flow works as intended, is helping turn “I noticed something” into a record you can revisit.

How does the FieldNote workflow work?
The creator describes a simple loop: choose a mission, observe without staring at the phone, capture what you noticed, and use AI to arrange those notes into a reflection. You do not need specialist knowledge or equipment to make a useful entry.
- Choose an observation mission. Pick one question to keep the outing focused—for example, notice which sounds are near and which are far. The project is described for short outings in places such as a walk, garden or park.
- Use Pocket Mode for the observation interval. The countdown is meant to mark a period for looking around rather than interacting with the phone. It is a behavioral prompt, not evidence that the app measures or reduces screen time.
- Notice and record specifics. After the observation period, jot down details you directly perceived: a sound, colour, change in weather, movement, texture or unexpected event. Separate what you saw from what you think may have caused it.
- Ask AI to organize your notes. The described AI feature turns rough field notes into a structured reflection. Treat that as help with wording and organization, not confirmation that an inferred detail is true.
- Save and revisit the entry. The creator describes a journal library and observation tally. These are intended to help keep a record over time; no evidence establishes that the tally validates observations or that entries sync across devices.
A practical note can be brief and still useful. For example: “10:15 a.m.; garden after light rain. Several quick calls from the hedge, then a pause. Leaves were wet; I noticed movement but could not see what made it.” This records time, conditions and what was actually noticed while leaving the unanswered identification question open.

Is FieldNote really local AI?
Not in the sense that every AI request in the hosted version runs on your device. “Local AI” refers to the creator’s local-development route, which used Ollama with Qwen 2.5 7B. The hosted Cloudflare Pages functions are configured for Cloudflare Workers AI using the model identifier @cf/meta/llama-3.2-3b-instruct. That distinction affects both connectivity and privacy expectations. A locally run model and a hosted model have different processing paths: the hosted AI endpoint is a cloud service, not an inference process confined to the user’s computer. The creator says entries may be stored in browser local storage, but that describes a possible storage location for journal data; it does not establish that prompts sent to hosted AI stay in the browser, that all data remains local, or that entries are encrypted.

Accordingly, do not assume the hosted demo works without internet access, that AI processing is offline, or that your notes are private in a particular technical sense. The available project description does not establish the details of retention, endpoint logging, encryption, cross-device synchronization or what data a hosted request contains. If that matters for a sensitive observation, avoid entering identifying or confidential information until the app’s current privacy and data-handling terms are clear.
Does the hosted demo work offline, and has it been verified?
Offline operation is not established for the hosted AI flow. The creator reported that the deployed interface loaded, but explicitly left successful end-to-end hosted inference unverified. A page loading and a configured model endpoint do not demonstrate that the full cycle—from submitting notes to receiving an AI-organized reflection—works reliably.

If you open the hosted interface, distinguish what you can see from what the project description says should happen. A loaded page is evidence of page access; a successful AI response would require the request-and-response path to complete. The available evidence does not establish that this end-to-end behavior was verified, so it would be misleading to promise that the demo reliably returns reflections.

Where do FieldNote entries and AI prompts go?
The creator says journal entries may use browser local storage, while hosted AI requests are configured for Cloudflare Workers AI. Those statements concern different parts of the system: where an entry may be kept in the browser and where an AI request is configured to run. They do not, by themselves, answer whether notes are transmitted in full, how long a hosted service retains request data, whether the app synchronizes entries, or whether storage is encrypted.
For that reason, treat the privacy details as unresolved rather than assuming either “everything stays on my device” or “all entries are uploaded.” Before entering information you would not want processed by a hosted service, check the current app’s privacy disclosures and whether its AI feature can be disabled or replaced with a local route. The project description alone does not establish that the public interface offers such a choice.

If an entry matters to you, keeping a separate copy in a paper notebook or another storage method you control is a sensible precaution, not a confirmed FieldNote feature.
Can FieldNote identify a bird, plant or insect?
There is no evidence here that FieldNote identifies species or verifies a proposed identification. The project is described as preserving the user’s observations, and its AI role is to organize field notes into a reflection. If you write “small bird with a pale stripe,” an organized paragraph is not proof of which bird it was.

Keep observation and interpretation separate. “Three short calls from the shrub” is an observation; “a particular species was calling” is an interpretation unless you have other evidence. When you do not know what you saw, record visible or audible characteristics and leave the question open. The National Park Service’s nature-journaling guidance recommends describing and drawing an unknown organism, then looking it up later rather than guessing in the moment. A regional field guide or a reliable identification resource can help with later research, but that is separate from the described FieldNote feature set. Do not treat AI-polished wording as a species determination, especially when your original note is uncertain or incomplete.

The National Park Service recommends including date, location and weather in a nature journal, and its guidance also suggests labeled diagrams. - Set the scene: date, approximate time, general location and weather.
- Write what your senses registered: sounds, colour, movement, texture, temperature or a change you noticed.
- Mark uncertainty: distinguish “I saw” from “I think” and note what you could not determine.
- Add a labeled sketch if useful: a simple outline with arrows or labels can preserve shape or position better than a vague description.
- Leave a question for later: for example, what made a sound or whether a plant’s appearance changes in another season.
These are suggestions for making a useful record, not required FieldNote fields. The NPS also notes that observing birds does not require special equipment. Binoculars and a bird field guide can be helpful for a bird-focused outing, but they are optional; a notebook and attention to what is around you are enough to begin. What can a technical reader infer about the implementation?

The NPS guidance supports basic metadata and labeled diagrams, and no special equipment is required simply to observe birds. FieldNote’s countdown and AI organization are conveniences described by its creator—not prerequisites for keeping a nature journal.
