Most PC failures in Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE have a practical fix. Install Microsoft’s VP9 Video Extensions first for launch failures, the butterfly loading hang and black video; disable Steam, Discord and GeForce overlays for Camera Obscura crashes; lower Volumetric Fog and Shadows, then use DLSS or FSR Quality for steadier performance. For a controller that is not detected, test Steam Input both ways, use a wired connection and prefer an XInput/Xbox pad. Keep gameplay locked to 60 FPS—or a genuinely sustained 120 FPS—because the Katana Engine ties game logic to frame rate.
This guide covers the Windows/Steam release globally, with separate Proton and Steam Deck notes. The latest publicly named patch is Ver. 1.04.00 from 22 June 2026.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat should I do before troubleshooting?
Start with a clean baseline so a codec, overlay, driver or configuration problem is not mistaken for a game bug.
- Open Steam, right-click the game, choose Properties, then Updates and let Steam install the newest build.
- Install Microsoft VP9 Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store. The remake uses VP9 for pre-rendered video.
- In Properties → Installed Files, select Verify integrity of game files.
- Update your graphics driver. If a normal update does not resolve an access-violation crash, a clean reinstall with Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a fallback.
- Temporarily disable Steam Overlay, Discord overlay and GeForce overlay.
- Use an SSD with at least 30 GB free, Windows 11 64-bit, and 16 GB of RAM. Direct3D 12 is the only supported PC graphics API.
The official Windows targets are 720p at a best-performance 30 FPS minimum and 1080p at standard 30 FPS recommended. Minimum hardware is an Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 3400G with a GTX 1050 Ti or Radeon R9 380X (4 GB VRAM); the recommended tier is an i7-8700 or Ryzen 5 3600XT with an RTX 2060 or RX 5700 XT (6 GB VRAM).

How do I fix a game that will not launch, hangs on the butterfly screen or shows black cutscenes?
Install VP9 Video Extensions before changing advanced settings. Magic Game World reported that missing VP9 is the most common cause of a failed launch, an indefinite butterfly loading screen and black pre-rendered scenes.
Windows launch sequence
- Install VP9 Video Extensions from Microsoft Store item 9N4D0MSMP0PT.
- Restart Windows, then verify the Steam files.
- Start the game normally. If it still fails, right-click
FatalFrameII.exe, open Properties → Compatibility, select Run this program as an administrator, and disable fullscreen optimizations. - If Windows reports
0xc0000005(Access Violation), add the game folder to Windows Defender’s allow-list temporarily and retest. Magic Game World attributes this symptom to Defender blocking memory allocation. - For a black video after VP9 is installed, raise Model LOD in the graphics options and test again.
Do not assume a later patch bundled the codec. Public Koei Tecmo notes through Ver. 1.04.00 do not mention VP9.
Proton and Linux launch crashes
Valve Proton issue #9567 recorded the opening-video failure as an access violation in mfmp4srcsnk.dll. Proton Experimental reportedly stopped the opening crash for some users around 15 March 2026. If the first cutscene still crashes, a reported workaround is:
PROTON_MEDIA_USE_GST=1 GST_PLUGIN_FEATURE_RANK=protonaudioconverterbin:NONE %command%
This is a community workaround, not an official game setting. Later reports still describe video-effect crashes in specific rooms under Proton Experimental, Hotfix, Proton 9 and Proton-GE, so changing Proton versions may not eliminate every cinematic failure.
How do I stop crashes when using the Camera Obscura?
Turn off the Steam Overlay and reduce Shadows to Medium before changing anything else. Magic Game World described Camera Obscura encounter crashes as a memory leak associated with the overlay and high shadow resolution.
- Steam Library → right-click the game → Properties → General.
- Clear Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
- In the title-screen graphics menu, set Shadows to Medium or Low.
- Restart the game and reproduce the encounter.
Ver. 1.03.03 (27 March 2026) fixed separate Camera Obscura problems, including re-obtaining it in Chapter Seven and a motion-blur option leaking into normal motion blur. Those patch-note fixes do not confirm that overlay-related memory leaks are closed.

Why does the game silently crash during a door transition?
A damaged or missing localized audio file is a frequent reported cause. Verify the installation first; if the crash survives verification, install current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables in both x86 and x64 versions.
- Steam Library → game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
- Reboot Windows after verification.
- Install or repair the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages for both architectures.
- Retry the same door transition without overlays or recording software running.
How do I fix stuttering, bad 60 FPS and low frame rates?
Separate shader compilation, GPU load and frame pacing. Raising one quality slider will not fix all three.
Use a stable graphics baseline
| Setting | Starting value | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Frame Rate | 60 | Katana Engine gameplay is designed around discrete frame-rate targets. |
| Upscaler | DLSS Quality or FSR Quality | Practical way to reduce GPU load at 1440p and 4K. |
| Volumetric Fog | Medium or Low | Magic Game World reported roughly 20 FPS recovered in heavier scenes. |
| Shadows | Medium | Reduces load and helps Camera Obscura stability. |
| Ambient Occlusion | Medium | High settings add GPU cost with limited visual benefit. |
| Reflections | Medium | Most costly near water and reflective surfaces. |
| Textures | High; Medium if VRAM-limited | Preserves image detail without exhausting video memory. |
| Film Grain | Off | Located under Screen Settings, not Graphics. |
| V-Sync | Off in-game | Allows driver-level or external frame pacing. |
Some controls are unavailable in the pause menu. Return to the title screen and open the main-menu Screen or Graphics page when an option is greyed out.
Deal with first-entry shader hitches
A Nexus Mods workaround raises shader_precompiled_num in %LOCALAPPDATA%KoeiTecmoFatalFrameIISavedatagraphics_option.json, then marks the file read-only so the engine pre-processes more shaders before entering new areas. A 11 September 2026 comment reports that the game can reset the value to 0 and remove the read-only flag, so treat this as a fragile community workaround: back up the file and check it after updates.
Keep frame pacing at a valid target
The in-game menu offers 30 and 60 FPS, while cutscenes remain locked to 30 FPS on PC and consoles. DSOGaming found the PC version is the only platform with a 60-FPS mode. Its analysis reported constant 60 FPS at 1080p Max on the highest tested GPUs; at 1440p Max, only RTX 4090, RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 held 60, while RX 7900 XTX and RX 9070 XT dipped to 55. Native 4K Max locked to 60 only on RTX 5090; an unlocked RTX 5090 averaged 77 FPS with a 72-FPS minimum.
Unlocking the cap through the configuration file or FF2RFix does not make every rate correct. DSOGaming reported that rates other than a locked 60 or 120 feel choppy, and Magic Game World warned that an unstable 120 FPS makes game logic run in slow motion. Cutscenes above 60 can also desynchronise audio. If you use a 120-Hz display, choose 120 only when your system can sustain it; otherwise use 60.

Try external pacing only after the baseline
Community reports describe a 16.666-millisecond (60-FPS) RivaTuner limit with its asynchronous limiter, in-game V-Sync off and driver V-Sync forced on. Other reports found that setting the monitor itself to 60 Hz stopped tearing and micro-stutter when driver V-Sync was ineffective. These are user-reported pacing approaches, not guaranteed fixes; change one variable at a time.
DSOGaming’s 10 March 2026 pass on a Ryzen 9 7950X3D, 32 GB DDR5-6000 system with current Nvidia and AMD drivers found the game GPU-bound, with no built-in benchmark and no major stutter on that high-end setup. That result does not rule out shader hitches on mid-range hardware.
How do I fix “Gamepad Not Working / Not Detected on Steam PC”?
Test Steam Input in both states, restart the game after each change, and use USB before Bluetooth. Steam lists DualShock 4 and DualSense support as USB-only for this title; XInput/Xbox pads are the safest first choice.
Steam and connection checks
- Connect the pad by USB, preferably directly to the PC.
- Steam Library → right-click the game → Properties → Controller → Override.
- Select Enable Steam Input, close the dialog and fully restart the game.
- If there is still no input, return to the same menu, choose Disable Steam Input, and restart again.
- Steam → Settings → Controller → External Gamepad Settings: enable only the family you own. If enabling it fails, disable that family and retest.
- For Xbox pads, install Microsoft’s Xbox Extended Feature Support driver when Steam offers it.
The game supports Xbox-style Type B prompts, PlayStation Type A prompts, Nintendo Switch Pro over Bluetooth, four presets (Modern 1, Modern 2, Classic 1 and Classic 2) and a fully remappable Custom layout. Camera and Camera Obscura sensitivity can be adjusted separately. Haptic feedback is XInput-only; there are no DualSense adaptive triggers, Impulse Triggers or motion-sensor controls.
Windows device cleanup
- Open USB Game Controllers and, under Advanced, select the Xbox controller if it appears.
- In Device Manager → Human Interface Devices, disable duplicate or ghost HID keyboard entries created by the controller, then update or reinstall its driver.
- Unplug extra USB devices and disable virtual pads such as vJoy.
- Run Steam as administrator and press
Alt+Enteronce to leave exclusive fullscreen.
Generic pads can enumerate as “Generic X-Box pad” yet still send no in-game input. An XInput-compatible Xbox controller over USB avoids the most common translation layer.
Proton controller failures
Controller detection remains a separate open Proton issue. Reports include an 8BitDo Ultimate working through its 2.4-GHz dongle, while a Flydigi Vader 5 Pro was detected but produced no input. Commenters suggested testing PROTON_DISABLE_HIDRAW=1 or PROTON_PREFER_SDL=1 in the game’s launch options. One DualSense Bluetooth report worked only after restarting the game with the controller already powered on.

What should Steam Deck owners change?
SteamDB’s 21 September 2026 report lists build 23673670 as Playable. The default controller configuration provided full functionality and Deck glyphs, but the report says manual graphics configuration is needed for good performance; it recommends the stable Proton runtime. Video-effect crashes reported by some Linux users are not eliminated by that compatibility rating.
What did the official patches actually fix?
Public Koei Tecmo Europe notes name Ver. 1.04.00 (22 June 2026) as the latest dated release and say it fixed Chapter Four’s Light Key event, Spirit Stone achievement/trophy unlocking on PlayStation 5, Xbox and Steam, Arabic language support and general stability issues. Earlier updates fixed HDR cutscene effects, save-data recovery, Chapter Four movement and side-door behavior, Point Exchange, outfit display during movies and several Camera Obscura-related issues.
Those notes do not specifically claim fixes for VP9 installation, Steam Overlay crashes, door-transition audio corruption, shader hitching or gamepad detection. SteamDB shows later changelists without public notes, so do not treat an undocumented build as proof that one of those problems is closed.
Are community fixes worth using?
Use them only after codec, files, drivers, overlays and in-game settings are correct, and keep a backup of your configuration.

Native120FPSOption
MixedNutsJP’s 25 September 2026 mod exposes 120 in the normal Max FPS menu and requires its dinput8.dll loader beside FatalFrameII.exe. The author says 120 FPS already exists internally; the mod only exposes the menu choice. Use it only with hardware that can hold a true 120, because an unstable target causes slow-motion gameplay.

The game ships with nvngx_dlss.dll 3.1.11.0 and contains libxess.dll, but there is no in-game Frame Generation or XeSS control according to DSOGaming and Magic Game World. Select the DLSS or FSR Quality option that is actually visible in the menu; do not infer support from a DLL alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are Fatal Frame II Remake cutscenes limited to 30 FPS?
The PC build locks pre-rendered cutscenes to 30 FPS, matching the console versions. Gameplay can run at 60 FPS, but the cinematic rate is a separate engine limit rather than a sign that your GPU is underperforming.

Can I run the game at native 4K without an upscaler?
It depends on the GPU. DSOGaming reported a locked native 4K Max 60 FPS only on an RTX 5090 in its published comparison, so DLSS or FSR Quality is the more practical route on other hardware.
Does the presence of an XeSS or DLSS file mean frame generation is available?
No. The installation includes related libraries and SDK components, but the retail graphics menu does not expose XeSS or an in-game Frame Generation switch. Use only the upscaling controls shown by your installed build.
