In Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake, raise the in-game Camera Obscura, frame the hostile wraith, wait for a clear focus lock and press the shutter. A head-on view and more illuminated red focal points produce a stronger hit. When the center of the targeting filament flashes as a wraith attacks, photograph that instant for a Fatal Frame. If that Fatal Frame lands during a damage-triggered Shutter Chance, it starts Fatal Time, letting you fire repeatedly without consuming film.
Those rules apply to the 2026 remake, not necessarily the original release. The steps below also cover filter choices, upgrades, exploration captures, controls, and the important exception that the Camera Obscura does not affect Kusabi.

How do I use the Camera Obscura?
The basic combat loop is raise, focus, improve your angle, and shoot. The official online manual describes the camera mechanics and indicators in detail at KOEI TECMO GAMES’ Camera Obscura controls page.
- Raise the camera and find the wraith. On Steam, right-click raises or lowers the camera. The filament points toward the subject. A red filament identifies a hostile wraith, blue identifies a specter, and other colors can appear for special subjects.
- Wait for a strong lock. Move until the target circle is clear rather than faint. An additional frame around the target indicates a head-on alignment. The pink section of the wraith’s HP gauge previews the damage your current shot can inflict.
- Keep the ghost inside the frame. A focused target and a straight-on angle are more valuable than firing quickly from the side. Illuminated red focal points inside the target are the locations that increase the shot’s damage.
- Press the shutter. A normal Camera Obscura photograph damages an ordinary hostile wraith. The selected film type changes attack power and reload behavior, so make sure the camera has finished reloading before you commit to a shot.
- Use a Special Shot when distance is unsafe. Press the Special Shot control to spend Willpower on a filter effect that can push a wraith back, blind it, slow it, or deliver another filter-specific effect. Save this resource for situations in which an ordinary photograph would leave you exposed.
Auto-focus works immediately. Manual focus and zoom are tied to camera upgrades, so do not assume those controls are available in the opening moments.

What do the Camera Obscura indicators mean?
The viewfinder gives you several pieces of combat information at once. Reading them prevents weak shots and helps you recognize a Fatal Frame window.
Filament color
Red means the camera is facing a hostile wraith. Blue identifies a specter, which is an exploration subject rather than a normal combat target. Special subjects can use other filter-specific colors, so color is a directional and identification aid rather than a damage rating.
Target circle and head-on frame
A faint circle means the target is not properly focused. Keep adjusting until the circle becomes clear. When an extra frame appears, you are lined up head-on; that alignment, combined with focus, improves damage.
Illuminated focal points
Red focal points light up within the target. More illuminated points mean a stronger photograph. If the wraith is only partly inside the frame or you are shooting from an oblique angle, fewer useful points may be available.
Pink HP preview
The pink segment of the target’s HP gauge previews how much damage the current framing and focus can do. Use it to decide whether to fire now or adjust your position for a better shot.
What is a Fatal Frame?
A Fatal Frame is a photograph taken at the instant an attacking wraith exposes its vulnerability. It is not simply a high-damage shot and it is not the same event as Shutter Chance.

- Keep the wraith in view as it approaches an attack.
- Watch the center of the filament rather than only the target circle.
- When the center flashes violently, press the shutter. That flash is the Fatal Frame cue.
A successful Fatal Frame staggers the attacker. If you fire too early, you get an ordinary photograph; if you wait too long, the attack may connect. Practice tracking the center indicator while keeping the ghost focused so the timing does not cost you the framing bonus.
How do I trigger Fatal Time?
Fatal Time requires two mechanics to overlap: a damage-triggered Shutter Chance and a Fatal Frame taken during that short window. The official rules are outlined in the remake’s combat manual.
- Build damage. Land enough ordinary damage to trigger Shutter Chance. The game gives you only a brief opportunity.
- Recognize Shutter Chance. It follows sufficient accumulated damage and expires after one shot or after a short interval. Do not treat every flashing attack cue as Shutter Chance.
- Wait for the attack cue. During Shutter Chance, watch for the violent flash at the center of the filament.
- Land the Fatal Frame. A Fatal Frame taken inside Shutter Chance starts Fatal Time.
During Fatal Time you can fire successive photographs without consuming film. The manual states that film type does not change reload time or attack power while Fatal Time is active, so concentrate on maintaining a clear target and taking each available shot. Sufficient damage can also trigger Fatal Time in situations where the wraith becomes aggravated.
What happens when a wraith becomes aggravated?
An aggravated wraith regains HP and attacks harder and more often. That recovery makes careless exchanges expensive. If you see the ghost enter a more aggressive state, create distance, use a suitable Special Shot, and wait for a better Fatal Frame rather than burning through weak photographs.
Which Camera Obscura filter should I use?
Filters are tactical tools, not a single upgrade ladder with one universally correct choice. Select them by distance, crowd control, reload pressure, Willpower, and whether you are fighting or solving an environmental puzzle. The official filter descriptions are on the Camera Obscura upgrade and filter page.
| Filter | Combat behavior | Resource and reload notes | Useful situation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Absorbs Willpower when you shoot; its Suppress effect pushes wraiths back. | The filter shot itself does not use film and can be used while reloading. | Default control and space-making when a wraith is closing in. |
| Paraceptual | Long range; Blind temporarily blinds a wraith. | The filter shot itself does not use film and can be used while reloading. | Keep distance, break an approach, or reveal paths linked to Vanishing Traces. |
| Exposure | Short film reload; Slow temporarily slows a wraith. | The filter shot itself does not use film and can be used while reloading. | Recover from a missed timing window or manage a fast attacker. |
| Radiant | High attack power; a charged Purge is a powerful finisher. | The charged Purge uses film, and Radiant cannot fire while the camera is reloading. | Finish a damaged wraith or open seals marked by bloody handprints. |
Aside from Radiant, filter shots do not deal ordinary damage; their value is the listed effect. The manual specifically suggests Paraceptual for attacks from a distance and Radiant as a powerful closing shot. A filter can be used while the camera reloads, but that does not make the regular shutter available during the same reload.

How should I upgrade the Camera Obscura?
Spend Prayer Beads through the Camera Obscura menu. The upgrade manual, updated April 1, 2026, identifies two especially useful early purchases.
- Focal Points: the first upgrade costs 3 Prayer Beads and makes it easier to illuminate focal points for stronger damage.
- Focus: the first upgrade costs 1 Prayer Bead and allows faster manual adjustment than relying on auto-focus.
- Reversion Beads: use these to reset upgrades and recover the items you spent.
Focal Points is the safest first purchase if you are still learning the damage window. Focus is more valuable when you are comfortable controlling the viewfinder and want to make manual corrections quickly. The costs above are the publisher’s listed upgrade costs, not prices for a separate item or real camera.

Not every ghost is a combat target. Exploration subjects have their own timing and framing requirements, and photographs can unlock records, points, items, or puzzle progress.
Specters
Specters appear briefly. Raise the camera, follow the blue filament, and shoot before the apparition disappears. The official manual warns, Specters will not linger long, so be sure to photograph them before they vanish.
Successful captures add named photos and award Photo Points.
Revenants
Revenants are normally invisible. After you obtain the Exposure Filter, photograph them to reveal the subject and obtain items. Do not waste ordinary combat film searching for a Revenant before that filter is available.
Twin Dolls
Both dolls must be inside the same frame. If one doll is missing, switch to the Paraceptual Filter and take a photograph; the resulting crimson-butterfly trail points toward the absent doll. Return and compose a single frame containing both dolls to complete the capture.

Keeping track of captures
The Spirit List in the Files area records photographed wraiths, specters, revenants, and dolls. Treat it as a checklist for exploration rather than as a combat score: a ghost can be defeated without satisfying a separate photo condition.
How do filters solve environmental puzzles?
The Camera Obscura also interacts with objects and routes that are not enemies.
- Paraceptual and Vanishing Traces: use Paraceptual to reveal paths associated with Vanishing Traces.
- Exposure and vanished objects: Exposure works with a key Photo and Phantom Exposé to restore things that have vanished.
- Radiant and seals: fully charge a Radiant Special Shot to open seals marked with bloody handprints.
- Zoom: once unlocked, zoom helps photograph subjects that are too far away or otherwise unreachable from a normal standing position.
These functions are unlocked or acquired through progression; the game does not give every filter and ability at the start. If an environmental subject seems impossible, check whether the required filter or upgrade has been obtained before changing your aim.

Why are my camera shots weak?
Weak damage usually means the viewfinder is reporting a framing, timing, or resource problem. Check these causes in order:
- The target circle is faint: keep adjusting until the subject is in focus.
- You are off to the side: move for a head-on alignment and look for the extra frame.
- Too few focal points are lit: adjust your angle or distance until more red points illuminate.
- The camera is reloading: wait for the reload to finish or use a non-Radiant filter effect that remains available during reload.
- The range is wrong: use Paraceptual at distance, or create space with a Special Shot instead of forcing a close ordinary shot.
- You mistook Shutter Chance for Fatal Frame: Shutter Chance follows accumulated damage, while Fatal Frame requires the center filament flash during an attack.
- The target is Kusabi: the publisher states that the Camera Obscura has no effect on Kusabi.
Photo Mode is separate from the combat view. It is for taking screenshots and does not replace a Camera Obscura photograph for damage, Spirit List entries, or exploration objectives.
Where can I play the remake?
KOEI TECMO America lists the remake as launching on March 12, 2026. The standard physical editions listed for the United States are for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2; Steam is digital-only. The Switch 2 physical release is identified as a game-key card. See the publisher’s platform information at KOEI TECMO America. These availability details are separate from the Camera Obscura mechanics and do not imply any particular price or stock status.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I find the list of ghosts I have photographed?
Open the Files menu and select Spirit List. It separates photographed wraiths, specters, revenants, and dolls, so you can identify which exploration capture is still missing without revisiting every encounter.
Does Photo Mode count as a Camera Obscura capture?
No. Photo Mode creates screenshots, while combat and exploration objectives require the in-game Camera Obscura view. A screenshot therefore will not damage a wraith or register a Spirit List subject.
Can the Camera Obscura defeat Kusabi?
No. The publisher specifically states that the Camera Obscura has no effect on Kusabi. Save your film and look for the encounter’s intended progression instead of trying to build a Fatal Frame chain.
Why can I not use manual focus or zoom yet?
Those operations are upgrade-dependent rather than default abilities. Until the relevant Camera Obscura upgrades are unlocked, use auto-focus and reposition yourself to improve the target circle and focal-point coverage.
Does changing film during Fatal Time improve the shots?
No. During Fatal Time, the manual says film type does not affect reload time or attack power. Concentrate on timing and framing rather than spending the window switching film.
