For fast-paced Soulslike combat, start with light attacks on R1/RB, heavy attacks on R2/RT, guard or deflect on L1/LB, dodge on Circle/B, and lock-on on R3. Set horizontal camera sensitivity higher than vertical, move the camera farther out if enemies or groups leave the frame, and turn motion blur off. These are transferable starting points—not a universal “best” slider value: each game scales sensitivity differently, so tune it with a short stick test. For Nioh 3, also lock the frame rate to a stable 60 or 120 FPS; an in-between rate can cause visible camera judder.
What controller and camera settings should I try first?
Use the following as a two-minute starting preset, then adjust only the setting that causes a specific problem. The layout follows the familiar Souls-style bumper map; camera numbers below are game-specific and should not be copied from one title to another.

- Controls: light attack R1/RB, heavy attack R2/RT, guard or deflect L1/LB, skill or secondary action L2/LT, dodge Circle/B, and lock-on R3.
- Camera: keep horizontal sensitivity higher than vertical. In Where Winds Meet, start around 60–80 horizontal and 40–60 vertical. In Nioh 3, start with camera speed 5.
- Camera distance: move it out from the close default if you lose sight of surrounding enemies. In Nioh 3, try distance 5 on its 0–10 scale first; move farther out if group fights still feel cramped.
- Visual feedback: turn motion blur off. In Nioh 3, turn screen shake off as well. Disable vibration when precise deflects or parries matter; use low vibration only if you prefer impact feedback to the clearest possible timing cues.
- Frame pacing: for Nioh 3, cap at a stable 60 or 120 FPS, whichever the system can maintain. For Where Winds Meet, use an unlimited rate only when it remains stable; otherwise cap to the display refresh rate.
Change one setting at a time and test in a safe area or against a familiar enemy. If the camera begins moving late, investigate deadzones before raising sensitivity. If it overshoots a locked target, lower vertical sensitivity or turn off camera correction rather than making every camera movement slower.
Why do Soulslike players put attacks on the bumpers?
Bumper attacks let the right thumb stay on the camera stick while attacking, and keep guard or deflect on the left bumper. That makes the layout easy to carry between games and avoids relying on a face-button attack layout that can compete with camera control.

In the common map, R1/RB is the quick or normal attack, R2/RT is the strong attack, L1/LB is guard or deflect, and L2/LT is a skill, secondary guard, or other game-specific action. Dodge stays on Circle/B, while R3 clicks the right stick to lock on or remove a target. Names and exact actions vary by game, so check each title’s control screen before assuming that every shoulder button behaves identically.
How the layout maps across games
| Game | Attack and defense map | Dodge and lock-on | Other useful controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elden Ring / Shadow of the Erdtree | RB/R1 attack; RT/R2 strong attack; LB/L1 guard; LT/L2 skill | B/Circle dodge; R3 lock-on or remove target | X/Square use item; Y/Triangle event action; A/Cross jump; L3 crouch. D-pad selects items, spells, and armaments. |
| Lies of P | RB/R1 normal attack; RT/R2 special or charge; LB/L1 guard; LT/L2 Legion Arm | B/Circle dash or dodge; R3 lock-on | Y/Triangle Fable Arts; X/Square belt item; A/Cross interact; L3 jump. |
| Where Winds Meet Souls-style preset | R1/RB light attack; R2/RT heavy attack; L1/LB deflect; L2/LT defend | Circle/B dodge; R3 lock-on | Cross/A jump. D-pad selects primary heal, secondary heal or buff, and previous or next weapon. |
The Elden Ring and Lies of P button maps above are the published controller layouts described by Sportskeeda (21 June 2024 for Elden Ring; 18 September 2023 for Lies of P) and MP1st (19 September 2023 for Lies of P). Lies of P guides list left- and right-stick sensitivity at 5/5; that is a useful title-specific starting point, not a scale that can be assumed to match another game.
When a face-button attack layout makes sense
A face-button layout is a reasonable personal remap if you cannot comfortably reach bumper attacks or you prefer to keep a thumb near dodge and jump. Some players use it to manage camera and sprint without a claw grip, but it is not the portable genre default: face-button attacks make simultaneous camera adjustments harder unless you change grip or move another action to a paddle.
Phantom Blade Zero is a special case: its in-game controls cannot be remapped, so PC players have used community mods to install a Dark Souls-style layout for Xbox controllers or DualSense. The mods are workarounds, not built-in options. Check compatibility with the current game version before installing a community modification.
How should I set camera sensitivity and distance?
Set horizontal movement faster than vertical as a starting principle. Enemies often cross the screen laterally, while excessive vertical movement can pull a locked camera away from the target during jumps or elevation changes. Then use a brief calibration test rather than treating a guide’s number as the correct value for every controller.
Where Winds Meet: a two-swipe camera test
GuideSpot’s October 2026 starting band is 60–80 for horizontal camera sensitivity and 40–60 for vertical. Stand still in a safe area and use two sharp right-stick swipes to complete one full camera rotation. If it takes three swipes, raise sensitivity; if one swipe completes the turn, lower it. This test helps find a usable turning rate, but it does not mean every game’s sensitivity scale has the same units.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSet aim-camera sensitivity about two or three points below the base camera as a starting point: GuideSpot suggests 6–8 for beginners and 9–12 for more experienced players. Keep camera zoom at Default or try +1 if you need more room to read group fights. If the game’s camera direction correction snaps or rubber-bands during turns, leave it on while learning the controls and switch it off once your turn rhythm is consistent. Invert settings are personal; do not change an established preference just because another player uses the opposite direction.
For the Grand Lightness Skill, GuideSpot recommends Free Camera so aerial camera movement is not tied to the character’s back. Dynamic Aiming can help while learning attack patterns; once deflect timing is consistent, try it off if its soft aim feels imprecise. For ranged bow or umbrella play, motion controls are optional: if enabled, GuideSpot’s starting values are 50–70 motion-sensor sensitivity and Rotation Mode Blend, which adds gyro input to the stick rather than replacing it.

Nioh 3: choose distance for the fight, not the screenshot
KeenGamer (25 February 2026) and GAM3S.GG (7 February 2026) recommend camera speed 5 and maximum camera distance for awareness. GamePro’s German-language guide (6 February 2026) instead recommends distance 5 on a 0–10 scale, whose default is 0. These recommendations can be reconciled: move away from the close default to 5 first, then push toward maximum if enemies or spacing still disappear from view. A close camera can feel immersive but makes surrounding threats harder to read; a farther camera gives more overview at the cost of a less intimate view of the character.
For handheld play, FinalBoss.io (updated 16 March 2026) advises raising horizontal tracking slightly, keeping vertical movement somewhat lower for jumps and dodges, and reducing screen shake on the smaller display. A dodge action should be reachable repeatedly without strain. On larger handhelds, a rear paddle can be useful; lock-on and target switching should remain near the right thumb.

Elden Ring uses the right stick for the camera and R3 for lock-on, but the official control map does not give a numeric “best camera sensitivity” recommendation. Use the in-game slider as a personal calibration rather than presenting a community number as an official setting.
Should I stay locked on or use the free camera?
Stay locked for a single target when it helps you read attacks and maintain orientation. Free the camera for crowds or awkward terrain when lock-on makes it difficult to choose the next threat; disable automatic target switching on a defeated enemy if the game offers that option.
R3 is a useful shared lock-on position because the same hand operates the camera and target selection. In Nioh 3, KeenGamer recommends enabling both Lock-on Marker and Focus on Lock-on Target. GamePro recommends turning off the setting that automatically switches lock-on when the current target is defeated, so the player—not the camera—chooses the next enemy in a crowd.
In Where Winds Meet, the D-pad preset lets you change weapons or use healing items without opening a menu and breaking lock. GuideSpot also recommends Auto-Switch Medicine On so healing does not interrupt lock-on, and Clean UI On to reduce screen clutter. Those are convenience choices, not replacements for deciding when to release a target manually.

Fixing Elden Ring’s unwanted camera recentering on PC
Some PC players report that small right-stick movements can trigger auto-centering even when the in-game option is disabled. A Steam Input community guide by Kayin describes a possible workaround: configure the right stick as Relative Mouse, use a Wide or Extra Wide curve, set vertical scale around 75%, lower in-game mouse sensitivity to about 1, raise Steam mouse sensitivity to roughly 800–1000, and set deadzone around 8 depending on the controller.
This is a community configuration, not a FromSoftware setting or guaranteed fix. It has an important trade-off: menus may stop responding to the stick as expected. An action set that restores joystick behavior while a cursor is visible may be needed. The relative-mouse approach may also help in Sekiro when auto-centering is disabled through a utility, but it is not a universal camera solution.

What is the difference between deflect and defend in Where Winds Meet?
Deflect is the timed parry action; defend is the blocking action. Keep deflect on L1/LB and defend on L2/LT so the more timing-sensitive action sits on the familiar guard bumper, rather than reversing them.
GuideSpot’s October 2026 Souls-style preset states: “Deflect on L1/LB. Defend on LT. Never the other way around.” Its D-pad map puts primary healing up, secondary healing or a buff down, and weapon changes left and right, helping preserve lock-on while managing combat items.
While learning enemy patterns, use Assist Deflection on a low setting if needed, then reduce it as timing improves. GuideSpot describes the DualSense as the reference controller for the game, with adaptive triggers and advanced haptics supported. Keep adaptive triggers at default resistance if you like the feedback for charging heavy attacks, but turn controller vibration off for the clearest deflect timing; GuideSpot’s casual-play ceiling is 35.
Vibration preference is not a universal law, but strong rumble can compete with subtle timing cues. Nioh 3 guidance similarly sets Trigger Effect Strength to 0 and Button Hold Settings to 1, reducing trigger resistance and shortening hold-input behavior. For guard and ranged aim, choose Press and Hold or Toggle based on which input you can execute reliably.
Why does my controller camera feel late or imprecise?
Check deadzone before increasing sensitivity. A stick reports how quickly the camera should turn, not a destination to point at; if the game ignores too much of the stick’s center, the camera appears to start late, while an overly small center deadzone can make the view drift when your thumb is off the stick.
Tune deadzones in this order
- Find the inner deadzone: release the stick and watch the camera for about ten seconds. Reduce the ignored center until drift appears, then raise it just enough to stop the drift.
- Set the outer deadzone: confirm that full stick deflection reaches full turn speed, including on diagonal movement. The outer deadzone defines where the game treats the stick as fully deflected.
- Keep the response curve linear initially: change it only if a concrete problem remains, such as a center that is too sluggish or edge movement that is too abrupt.
- Set sensitivity: after deadzones and curve, raise or lower sensitivity until full deflection turns at a useful rate. Gear Geeks Gaming advises leaving a workable sensitivity alone for two weeks instead of continually chasing a different feel.
- Adjust acceleration only if available: reduce the ramp if the game exposes a control and turning speed builds too slowly.
- Consider different hardware last: Hall-effect or TMR sticks may be an option when a worn controller cannot hold a stable center, but hardware is not the first fix for a poorly set deadzone.
Deadzone shape also matters: radial and axial settings handle diagonal input differently. Anti-deadzone is a PC-tool workaround for games with a large hard-coded deadzone; it is not the same thing as simply lowering a game’s inner deadzone. Steam Input uses a 0–1 scale, so 0.10 means the first 10% of stick travel is ignored. DS4Windows exposes deadzone, anti-deadzone, and maxzone controls.
Where to adjust the settings
- Xbox Accessories app: adjust inner and outer deadzones for each stick. GuideSpot suggests 5–10% for worn sticks in Where Winds Meet; use the drift test rather than applying that range automatically to a healthy controller.
- PS5 standard DualSense: there is no system-wide deadzone setting; use a game’s own control options or a compatible controller profile.
- DualSense Edge: hardware profiles can adjust stick sensitivity, stick and trigger deadzones, vibration, and remappable buttons. Sony’s product information says profiles can be switched and configured for different games.
- Xbox Elite Series 2: the Xbox Accessories app can remap paddles, and GpadTesterPro reports that Elite Series 2 deadzone profiles can be saved to the controller’s internal memory.
Back buttons are useful when an action needs frequent access without moving a thumb off a stick. Mapping dodge to a comfortable paddle can help in Nioh 3; mapping weapon swap can help in encounters that demand frequent camera control. A remap only helps if the paddle is comfortable to press repeatedly and its action does not conflict with the game’s input rules.
Can vibration, display effects, or frame rate change camera feel?
Yes. The camera can feel unclear or delayed even when its sensitivity is reasonable if visual blur hides motion, shake obscures spacing, or frame pacing is inconsistent. Treat display settings and frame-rate stability as part of combat readability, not as substitutes for camera tuning.

Turn down effects that obscure timing
- Motion blur: turn it off in Where Winds Meet, Nioh 3, and Lies of P if it makes target movement harder to read. Handheld guidance also recommends it off.
- Screen shake: turn it off in Nioh 3, especially on a handheld screen.
- V-Sync: guides for Where Winds Meet and Nioh 3 recommend it off to reduce input lag. Whether that is worthwhile depends on the display and tolerance for tearing.
- Extra image effects: Nioh 3 performance guides recommend disabling chromatic aberration, vignette, depth of field, and bloom. A Phantom Tweaks mod for Phantom Blade Zero also changes FOV and camera distance and removes several of these effects.
Nioh 3 needs a deliberate frame-rate cap
Nioh 3 launched on 6 February 2026. Expert Game Reviews (28 October 2026) reports visible camera judder when the game is not running at a locked 60 or 120 FPS. Backdash (3 February 2026) notes that the game’s physics are tied to frame rate and that dips can cause slowdown. Choose the cap the hardware can hold consistently; do not chase an unstable 80–90 FPS or use an unlocked maximum merely because the option exists.
Frame generation can improve the displayed smoothness while adding latency. GAM3S.GG recommends it off; KeenGamer allows DLSS or FSR frame generation but warns about latency. For deflect-heavy play, start with frame generation off and prioritize stable frame pacing. In Lies of P on consoles, MP1st describes Performance Mode as targeting 60 FPS, Quality Mode as 30 FPS at 4K, and High Frame Rate in Quality Mode as targeting 40 FPS; turn motion blur off if it interferes with reading movement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor Where Winds Meet, GuideSpot recommends unlimited FPS only if the hardware holds a stable rate, otherwise capping to monitor refresh. Its practical point is that a stable 60 FPS is preferable to a fluctuating 90 for consistent combat inputs.
Wired or Bluetooth: which controller connection feels more consistent?
Do not assume Bluetooth is always slower or USB is always better on every controller. Hardware-rig figures compiled by Gear Geeks Gaming from Gamepadla measurements in 2026 show a faster average for stock DualSense over Bluetooth than its stock USB connection, but worse worst-case consistency; a wired DualSense Edge is a more predictable high-polling option if its cost and features suit the player.
| Controller and connection | Reported polling rate | Reported latency | What the figures indicate |
|---|---|---|---|
| DualSense, stock USB | 250 Hz | 8.27 ms average button; 7.41 ms average stick | Baseline stock USB result in the cited 2026 compilation. |
| DualSense, Bluetooth | 542.42 Hz (March 2025) and 798.72 Hz (June 2026) | 5.96 ms average button; worst press 17.11 ms | Faster average button result than stock USB in the comparison, but the worst press illustrates less consistency. |
| DualSense, USB at 1000 Hz overclock | 1000 Hz | 3.93 ms button; 2.85 ms stick | Requires hidusbf, Memory Integrity off, and a DualSense or DualShock 4; this is a technical workaround, not a stock setting. |
| DualSense Edge, stock USB | 1000 Hz without overclock | 3.46 ms button; 3.46 ms stick | Higher polling without installing an overclock filter driver. |
| Xbox Series controller, USB | 125 Hz | 6.50 ms button; 8.30 ms stick | USB figures in the same Gamepadla-derived compilation. |
These are Gamepadla hardware-rig measurements as compiled by Gear Geeks Gaming, not a guarantee for every individual controller, wireless environment, firmware, or PC. GuideSpot’s separate claim that Bluetooth adds 15–20 ms is an author estimate, not a lab result, and does not match the average results above; use the measured values with their conditions rather than treating that estimate as a universal rule.
On PC, connection is only one part of perceived lag. GuideSpot recommends testing a direct USB connection without a hub, checking Steam’s “Hide DS4 Controller” option if controller input is being intercepted, and using Windows Best Performance mode. Those are troubleshooting checks, not promises of a specific latency reduction. On a TV, enable Game Mode if available; GuideSpot estimates it can cut processing latency by 20–40 ms, but that is an author-reported figure rather than a laboratory measurement.

Which controller hardware features are worth using?
Start with the controller you already hold comfortably. Adjustable deadzones, profiles, and back buttons can make a meaningful difference when a stick drifts or a thumb must manage camera and dodge together; they do not make a poor layout or unstable frame rate disappear.
The DualSense Edge supports remappable buttons, saved profiles, stick sensitivity, stick and trigger deadzones, vibration intensity, and back buttons. Sony says Fn+Options opens its customization menu; the package includes half-dome and lever back buttons plus standard, high-dome, and low-dome stick caps. On PC, profile edits use PlayStation Accessories for Windows; haptics and adaptive triggers may require USB in supported cases.

The Xbox Elite Series 2 supports remapping through the Xbox Accessories app, with profiles that GpadTesterPro says can be stored on the controller. A back paddle can take dodge or weapon swap so the thumbs stay on the sticks during complex encounters. Choose the action based on the game and your reach: a paddle used for a high-frequency dodge must remain comfortable over a long session.
Do not overclock a stock DualSense just to chase a polling number unless you understand the system requirements. The hidusbf method described for 1000 Hz USB overclocking requires Memory Integrity to be turned off and applies to DualSense or DualShock 4. The DualSense Edge already has a measured 1000 Hz stock USB polling rate in the cited Gamepadla data, avoiding that driver workaround.

Nioh 3 rewards a control setup that keeps both camera direction and dodge available because its combat encourages mid-fight style changes. Expert Game Reviews (28 October 2026) describes Samurai style as able to deflect regardless of weapon, while Ninja style has multiple dodges and a footstool jump; that makes reliable dodge access, readable spacing, and deliberate lock-on changes more useful than a close-up camera.
GamePro also recommends enabling the option that prevents Power Counter (R2) from also switching Samurai/Ninja style. Separating those actions helps prevent an intended counter from causing an unintended style change. Set Button Hold Settings to 1 if you want holds to trigger more quickly, then decide whether Guard and ranged aim should use Press and Hold or Toggle based on your own reliable input.
How do I settle on settings without chasing numbers?
Use a controlled adjustment loop: fix the controls and visual clutter first, establish a drift-free deadzone, then tune turn speed and distance. Keep a short note of the current values so you can revert changes that make the camera worse.
- Choose a familiar layout: begin with bumper attacks, bumper guard or deflect, Circle/B dodge, and R3 lock-on. Remap only if reach or comfort creates a specific problem.
- Make the screen readable: turn off motion blur, and reduce shake or vibration where they interfere with spacing or timing.
- Fix the stick center: use the released-stick drift check, then set outer deadzone and a linear curve before adjusting sensitivity.
- Calibrate turning: in Where Winds Meet, use the two-swipe full-rotation test; elsewhere, make a consistent turn in a safe area and adjust until tracking feels controlled.
- Check target behavior: test lock-on against one opponent and a group. Keep it for single-target fights; use manual target choice when automatic switching or lock-on movement disrupts crowd control.
- Stabilize performance: in Nioh 3, choose a stable 60 or 120 FPS cap. Do not use a camera slider to compensate for frame judder.
- Hold the setup steady: after finding a workable sensitivity, leave it alone long enough to build muscle memory before making another change.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best ADS sensitivity for a controller in a Soulslike?
There is no genre-wide ADS value: many Soulslikes use a separate aim-camera scale only for ranged modes, and its units do not translate reliably between games. In Where Winds Meet, GuideSpot’s October 2026 starting range is 6–8 for beginners or 9–12 for advanced players, roughly two or three points below base camera sensitivity.
Is Where Winds Meet best played with a controller?
The available game-specific guidance treats the DualSense as the reference controller and gives a full Souls-style controller preset, including deflect and defend placement. That makes controller play a natural fit for players already accustomed to bumper-based Souls controls, but it does not establish that controller is objectively better for every player.
Should I invert the camera Y-axis in a Soulslike?
Choose the direction that matches your established muscle memory; inversion is a preference, not a performance setting. Avoid changing it mid-game unless you are prepared to relearn vertical camera movement.
Can I use a Souls-style layout in Phantom Blade Zero on console?
The cited layout mods are for PC controller setups, and the game itself does not offer in-engine button remapping. The available evidence does not establish an equivalent console-side remap, so check the platform’s current accessibility or controller-remapping options rather than assuming the PC workaround applies.
