If you need Arabic speech-to-text, start by shortlisting Audar-ASR-V1-Turbo and Cohere Transcribe Arabic alongside Falcon-ASR, then compare them on recordings that match your dialect and interview conditions. Audar also has a smaller Flash tier; Whisper large-v3 or large-v3-turbo, Qwen3-ASR-1.7B, SeamlessM4T v2, and Azure AI Speech are alternatives when multilingual workflows, translation, or a managed service matter more. There is no sourced result proving one model will outperform the others on your particular hour-long interviews, so treat the shortlist as candidates to evaluate—not a universal ranking.

The rows are a use-case shortlist, not a performance ranking. The WER values come from different evaluations and should not be read as a single controlled contest; see the benchmark section below. Prices and free-plan details are not stated in the cited material.

What does Falcon-ASR offer, and what is still uncertain?

Falcon-ASR is a 1.6-billion-parameter model from the Technology Innovation Institute (TII), announced in October 2026. Its focus includes Emirati speech, Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), other Gulf varieties, and Arabic dialects; it also supports English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese. TII says the model can transcribe its five named languages without a language flag and supports word-level timestamps.

TII reports a 20.92% average word error rate (WER) and 8.79% average character error rate (CER) across six Arabic test sets in its stated leaderboard-protocol comparison. Those are results for that defined evaluation, not a forecast for an individual recording. In a separate internal Emirati/Gulf evaluation, TII reports 22.73% Emirati WER and 10.19% Emirati CER. Do not substitute the internal figure for the six-set average or treat the two evaluations as interchangeable.

For English, TII reports a 5.74% mean WER over seven English test sets. That is an English result, not an Arabic score. The institute’s release notes that “Arabic speech varies by region, speaker and setting,” a useful reminder that dialect and recording conditions can affect whether a benchmark resembles your material.

Access is another practical distinction. TII’s release points readers to a Hugging Face demo and describes API access and native applications as planned. It does not establish that those planned offerings are generally available now. If you need an operational hosted endpoint, confirm availability rather than assuming Falcon has one.

Which Arabic-first alternative should you evaluate first?

For an Arabic-led project, Audar-ASR-V1-Turbo and Cohere Transcribe Arabic are the most direct alternatives in this shortlist. Audar Flash is a separate option where tier size or license terms are central. Their benchmark figures, access, and capabilities differ, so choose based on the whole workflow—not only a displayed WER.

Audar-ASR-V1-Turbo: closest Arabic-first challenger

Audar describes Turbo as an approximately 2.35-billion-parameter model for MSA, Gulf and Emirati Arabic, Egyptian, Levantine, and Maghrebi speech, including Arabic-English code-switching. It offers downloadable deployment options and an optional managed API. TII’s 2026 snapshot displays a 23.17% average WER and 9.23% average CER for Audar Turbo, against Falcon’s respective 20.92% and 8.79% in the same stated six-set comparison. This is a reported snapshot, not an independently reproduced result for every use case.

Audar’s repository also shows an older Turbo figure of 24.78% WER. The older and later values come from different snapshots or normalization, so do not combine them as if they were measurements from one unchanged evaluation. For use rights, Audar says its Community License permits research and limited commercial use by qualifying entities; enterprise-scale use and model-as-a-service use may require another license. Check the terms for your organization and deployment before building around the weights or API.

Cohere Transcribe Arabic: Arabic focus with feature limitations

Cohere lists a 2-billion-parameter Arabic/English model intended for Arabic dialects and provides Apache-2.0 terms. TII’s 2026 comparison snapshot reports 25.87% average WER and 11.80% average CER for it. Its Hugging Face files require acceptance of access conditions, so the license label alone does not mean the files are immediately accessible without steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The model card says it does not provide explicit automatic language detection, word timestamps, or speaker diarization. It also cautions about non-speech audio and inconsistent code-switch behavior. If your workflow depends on separating speakers, aligning words to audio, or reliably handling Arabic-English switches, verify whether those gaps can be addressed elsewhere in your pipeline before choosing it.

Audar-ASR-V1-Flash: a distinct tier, not Turbo under another name

Audar describes Flash as a separate, smaller tier and identifies an Open License that allows commercial use subject to stated conditions. Do not transfer Turbo’s Community License terms to Flash or Flash’s Open License terms to Turbo. The material here does not give a comparable Flash benchmark score, so evaluate it on your own audio rather than inferring its accuracy from Turbo’s published figure or the tier name.

When do Whisper, Qwen, or SeamlessM4T make more sense?

These models are useful when your priorities extend beyond Arabic specialization. Whisper has documented local-inference routes; Qwen adds a multilingual streaming option; SeamlessM4T is relevant if translating speech is part of the task. Their published Arabic figures do not form a controlled comparison with TII’s Falcon snapshot.

Whisper large-v3 and large-v3-turbo: multilingual local baselines

Both Whisper variants have documented local-inference routes. The large-v3 model card displays Apache-2.0 terms. The turbo model card displays MIT and describes reducing decoder layers from 32 to 4 to improve speed, with some quality cost. That design trade-off may matter if you want local inference but need to weigh throughput against transcription quality.

A 2025 Interspeech Arabic benchmark reports 36.86% average WER for large-v3 and 40.05% for large-v3-turbo across its then-current six-set evaluation. These are the paper authors’ 2025 figures, not a controlled 2026 head-to-head against Falcon. They can give historical context for Whisper on that benchmark, but they do not establish that Falcon or an Arabic-focused alternative will produce better transcripts for your dialect, microphones, or transcript conventions.

Qwen3-ASR-1.7B: streaming and offline options

Qwen’s model card explicitly includes Arabic and lists Apache-2.0 terms, offline inference, and streaming inference. The family also includes a smaller 0.6-billion-parameter member. That gives a multilingual workflow another shape to consider if streaming matters, but model size or streaming availability alone does not establish accuracy on your recordings.

TII separately lists Qwen3-ASR in its internal Emirati comparison. That internal result is not part of TII’s public six-set average table; keep those evaluations distinct when reviewing claims or making a shortlist.

SeamlessM4T v2: transcription plus speech translation

Meta documents SeamlessM4T v2 for automatic speech recognition and speech-translation tasks. It is worth considering when the deliverable includes translated speech or text rather than a transcript alone. Its model card uses the CC-BY-NC-4.0 license, so the noncommercial restriction may make it unsuitable for a commercial workflow. Confirm that the terms fit your exact use before adoption.

When is Azure AI Speech a better fit than local weights?

Azure AI Speech is the managed-service candidate here for teams that prefer a hosted transcription service and explicit locale selection. Microsoft’s speech-to-text locale table lists ar-AE for UAE Arabic as well as other Arabic locales; feature support differs between locale rows, so check the specific locale and features you need rather than assuming every Arabic option behaves alike.

A March 2026 report from aiXplain evaluated systems on its own dialectal-Arabic recordings and reported mean WERs of 43.5% for Azure, 53.5% for AWS, 56.6% for Whisper, and 63.4% for Google. That evaluation predates Falcon’s October 2026 announcement and used its own audio and methods. It cannot establish that Azure wins or loses against Falcon, nor should those figures be combined with TII’s six-set comparison.

A hosted service and downloadable weights also shift practical questions. A service may simplify access and infrastructure, while local deployment offers a different control and operational burden. The cited material does not establish a universal cost, latency, or privacy advantage for either approach; compare those requirements against your own policies and workload.

How should you compare alternatives for hour-long Arabic interviews?

Use the same representative held-out audio for each finalist and compare transcripts against human-checked references. That makes the result more relevant to your speakers and recording setup than ranking models by figures from unrelated datasets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose representative clips. Include the dialect mix you actually record—such as Emirati or other Gulf speech, MSA, Egyptian, Levantine, Maghrebi, or code-switching—and the audio conditions that matter, including phone recordings, quiet interviews, or overlapping speech. Do not select only clean sections if real interviews include difficult passages.
  2. Set the transcript rules first. Decide how references handle dialect spelling, punctuation, numbers, disfluencies, and Arabic-English switches. Apply the same conventions to every candidate; otherwise differences in text normalization can be mistaken for recognition differences.
  3. Keep a held-out portion. Use some representative material for configuration and reserve other clips for the final comparison. This helps avoid selecting a model simply because it suits a small set of examples used during setup.
  4. Compare both error measures when available. WER is word error rate; lower is better. CER is character error rate; lower is also better. Arabic spelling and normalization choices can affect how errors are counted, so record the conventions alongside the result.
  5. Check required features on the actual workflow. Confirm whether you need word-level timestamps, diarization, language detection, streaming, offline inference, or speech translation. A model that cannot supply a necessary output may be a poor fit even if its transcript score is attractive.
  6. Evaluate deployment and rights. Decide whether the audio can be sent to a hosted service or must stay in a local workflow. Verify current file access, license terms for your organization, and any distinction between research, commercial, enterprise, or model-as-a-service use.
  7. Review long recordings as a workflow, not just a single score. Compare transcription quality across the beginning, middle, and end of the interview, and note where errors cluster. The available comparisons do not establish that any one candidate has a particular hour-long duration limit or will stay accurate across every long recording.

For an Arabic interview, preserve a consistent original audio sample and a corrected reference transcript so alternatives can be assessed on identical material. The honest decision is the candidate that meets your transcript, feature, access, and deployment requirements on that sample—not the model with the most impressive isolated benchmark number.

How should you read the published Arabic benchmark figures?

Benchmark scores are useful only with their evaluation context attached. TII says competitor averages in its displayed snapshot were checked on September 30, 2026, using pinned manifests, and its Falcon six-set evaluation follows that protocol. Falcon’s separate internal Emirati evaluation is not the same benchmark. The TII table and the internal result answer different questions.

Likewise, the 2025 Interspeech results for Whisper and the 2026 Ramsa Emirati-corpus paper are not a common league table. The Ramsa paper by Rania Al-Sabbagh and coauthors reports 0.268 WER on its evaluated subset for Whisper large-v3-turbo; it does not test Falcon in that reported comparison. Dates, subsets, normalization, dialect distribution, and scoring procedure can all differ. A number is not transferable to your interviews merely because every paper labels it WER.

For that reason, the At a glance table includes figures only where the available data gives a named source and evaluation context. Missing values—such as a comparable Flash score—are not inferred. No sourced comparison establishes which system is best for a particular speaker mix, interview length, recording device, noise level, transcript style, or privacy constraint.

How we picked the shortlist

The options are included because they address distinct reader needs supported by the cited model cards, service documentation, and published evaluations: Arabic-first transcription, alternative Arabic model tiers and licenses, multilingual local inference, streaming, speech translation, and hosted Arabic locale selection. Performance figures are attributed to their named publishers and dates; they are not treated as a single ranking where evaluation protocols differ. The shortlist deliberately leaves the final choice to a same-audio comparison and the reader’s feature, access, deployment, and license requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I replace Whisper large-v3 just because another model has a lower published WER?

No. A lower number from another dataset does not predict a better transcript for your speakers or recording setup. Keep Whisper as a baseline and compare the same held-out interview clips, reference transcript, and normalization rules across candidates.

Does Falcon-ASR support Arabic without setting a language flag?

TII says Falcon can transcribe its five named languages without a language flag, including Arabic. That statement describes language selection, not a guarantee of dialect identification or transcript quality for every recording.

Can I use Qwen’s smaller 0.6B model instead of the 1.7B version?

Qwen’s card identifies a 0.6B family member, but the cited material does not provide a comparable Arabic benchmark result for it. Treat it as a separate candidate and check its quality and feature behavior on your own sample.

Does a model’s open license mean I can use its files immediately?

Not necessarily. Cohere’s Hugging Face files require acceptance of access conditions, and Audar’s tiers have distinct terms. Check both the license and any access or use conditions for the exact model and deployment you intend.
