Yes. Factorio 2.1 is now a stable release with a native ARM64 Linux build, and Wube Software says that build is officially Steam Frame Certified. The update removes the need to run the x86 version through translation on Valve’s ARM-based handheld. Wube reports 720p performance at about 60 frames per second in most scenes, with modest dips when factories become especially busy. Factorio 2.1 became stable on October 23, 2026.
What changed in Factorio 2.1?
Factorio 2.1 is primarily a quality-of-life and polish release rather than a new campaign-sized expansion. The Factorio team describes it as a collection of small features, refinements and work deferred from version 2.0; it does not add new planets, enemies or research trees.

The important platform change is native ARM64 Linux support. That covers Steam Frame, Raspberry Pi systems used as headless servers, Asahi Linux on Apple Silicon MacBooks and other ARM64 Linux hardware. Wube’s homepage lists stable version 2.1.23 and experimental version 2.1.24, so the stable branch is the appropriate choice for a normal Steam Frame installation.
Factorio is a logistics and automation game built around mining resources, researching technologies, constructing infrastructure, automating production and defending the factory from enemies. Wube says more than 3,500,000 people have bought it.

Does Factorio run natively on Steam Frame?
Yes. The Steam build now contains both x86 and ARM64 Linux binaries and selects the correct one with a shell script based on the host architecture. Wube says the ARM64 build has official Steam Frame Certification.
The port required a change in Valve’s runtime environment. Steam Linux Runtime 1.0 did not provide ARM64 support, so Wube moved the game to Steam Linux Runtime 4.0 for all players and updated its Steamworks SDK to include the ARM64 shared library. The first successful Steam Frame boot came in February 2026 after the developers resolved glibc-version problems.
During LAN testing in May 2026, Wube reported no ARM64-versus-x86 desynchronisation and said the Frame kept up with the game through a complete playthrough. That is a compatibility report from the developer, not an independent benchmark.
How fast is Factorio on Steam Frame?
Wube’s stated target is 720p with graphics settings matched to the Steam Deck. In the company’s report, the game easily maintains roughly 60 FPS in most situations, while very busy scenes produce slight dips.
| Comparison | Wube’s reported result | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Frame rendering | About 60 FPS in most scenes | 720p, settings identical to Steam Deck; slight dips in busy scenes |
| Native ARM64 CPU versus x86 through FEX | About 11% faster | Wube’s stated benchmark |
| Raspberry Pi 5 native versus translated | 28% native advantage | Wube’s 2026 benchmark |
| M1 Pro MacBook native versus translated | 35% native advantage | Wube’s 2026 benchmark |
These figures describe Wube’s own measurements and should not be treated as a universal frame-rate guarantee. Factory size, entity counts, simulation load and the specific ARM processor can all change performance. The practical advantage of the native build is that ARM instructions run directly instead of passing through FEX translation, reducing that translation overhead.
What controls work on Steam Frame?
Factorio does not use the Steam Frame’s virtual-reality features. Wube says the game therefore behaves much like its Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch versions.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
- Built-in laser mouse: the game responds to the Frame’s pointer movement and clicks.
- Steam Controller: its trackpad provides a handheld, mouse-like way to navigate the 2D interface.
- Mouse and keyboard: conventional desktop input remains supported for players who prefer precise cursor control and keyboard shortcuts.
A trackpad-style controller can make inventory and blueprint work more comfortable than relying only on buttons, while a physical mouse and keyboard remain the most familiar option for long construction sessions.
Can existing Factorio 2.0 saves be used in 2.1?
Yes, 2.0 saves load in 2.1, but the conversion is not risk-free. Wube specifically warns that changes such as the circuit-network Input/Output split can break existing factory designs even though the save itself opens.
The migration is one-way for practical purposes: saves and blueprints saved by 2.1 cannot be downgraded to 2.0. Make backups before opening an important factory in the new version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSafer upgrade sequence
- Exit Factorio and copy important 2.0 save files and blueprint strings or books to separate storage.
- Check whether the mods used by the save have 2.1 versions. Popular mods were updated during the experimental period, but individual projects can still lag behind.
- Open a duplicate save first and inspect circuit conditions, combinators and automated production after loading.
- Keep the original 2.0 files until the factory and its blueprints work as expected in 2.1.
How does the stable release differ from the earlier ARM rollout?
Wube initially distributed the ARM64 Steam build to Linux Steam players on the experimental branch while the port and runtime changes were being validated. The October 23 announcement that “2.1 is now marked as stable” supersedes that testing stage for regular players. If you previously opted into the experimental build, selecting the stable branch gives you the supported release line; the experimental channel remains available for newer 2.1 work.
What other ARM64 hardware is covered?
Steam Frame is the headline use case, but the same native Linux support extends to ARM64 systems beyond handheld gaming. Wube names Raspberry Pi for headless servers and Asahi Linux on Apple Silicon MacBooks, along with other assorted ARM64 hardware.
Those targets serve different purposes. A Steam Frame runs the interactive client, while a Raspberry Pi can host a headless multiplayer server without rendering the game. Apple Silicon users running Asahi Linux can use the native Linux executable instead of relying on x86 translation. Performance and driver support remain hardware- and distribution-dependent.

Should Steam Frame owners switch to Factorio 2.1?
For a new Steam Frame installation, stable 2.1 is the clear starting point: it supplies the native ARM64 executable, carries Steam Frame Certification and avoids the overhead of translating the x86 build. Existing factories should be upgraded deliberately because circuit behavior can change and 2.1 saves cannot return to 2.0.
The result is a supported native path rather than an experimental workaround. Expect a 720p presentation aimed at about 60 FPS in ordinary scenes, with simulation-heavy factories still capable of causing dips.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to choose a special ARM version in Steam?
No separate download is required. The Steam package includes both x86 and ARM64 Linux binaries and selects the matching executable automatically through its startup script.
Will every Factorio mod work after moving to 2.1?
No. Many popular mods received updates during the experimental period, but compatibility is maintained by each mod author. Check a mod’s 2.1 release before opening a valuable save and keep a backup of the original.

Can a Raspberry Pi run the full Factorio interface with this update?
The native ARM64 build also supports Raspberry Pi, but Wube specifically highlights headless-server use. A Pi can therefore host simulation and multiplayer services without implying the same client performance as Steam Frame.
Is the experimental 2.1.24 branch required for Steam Frame?
No. Wube’s stable line already includes the native ARM64 support, and the homepage lists 2.1.23 as stable. The 2.1.24 experimental build is a separate, less conservative update channel.
