Verdict: F-Secure VPN is a competent, simple VPN for people who want mainstream Windows, macOS, Android or iOS apps, several established protocols and basic leak and kill-switch protection. It is not an automatic bargain: RTINGS found privacy-policy, data-handling and TLS/BGP-related concerns, and no independent privacy or security audit in its assessment. The product is also in a naming and migration transition. F-Secure now markets the service as F-Secure VPN, previously called FREEDOME VPN, while F-Secure’s own community notice says migration of the standalone Freedome app was postponed. Check which app and purchase channel you have, then inspect the live checkout in your country for the actual trial, first-term price, renewal price and refund rules before deciding.

What is F-Secure VPN in 2026?

F-Secure VPN is the current name F-Secure uses for the service previously called FREEDOME VPN. A new customer reaching F-Secure’s product page is being offered the current F-Secure VPN product, while some existing customers may still have a standalone Freedome installation or an app-store subscription. The name change therefore describes the current product family, not proof that every older installation has already migrated.

This distinction matters when you compare features, sign in, renew or troubleshoot. App labels, account screens, supported protocols and operating-system compatibility can differ between the legacy Freedome client and the newer F-Secure app. Treat the app name and the seller shown on your receipt as the starting point for any purchase or support decision.

The current product page presents F-Secure VPN as a subscription with purchase and renewal options. It also uses automatic-renewal language, so the first price you see is not necessarily the amount charged at the next term.

What changed from Freedome to F-Secure VPN?

F-Secure’s current product page identifies F-Secure VPN as “previously called FREEDOME VPN.” The company’s support-community timeline shows that the transition has not followed the original schedule.

The announced end-of-life plan

In an April 2024 community thread titled “Standalone Freedome VPN reaching End of Life,” F-Secure announced that the standalone app would reach end of life after May 22, 2024 and that users would move to the newer F-Secure app.

The postponement

An accepted staff response, edited March 17, 2025, changed that expectation. F-Secure wrote: “we have decided to postpone the migration of F-Secure Freedome VPN to the new client.” The same response says: “End-of-life notifications for Freedome VPN desktops and mobiles have been put on hold.” It also says app-store purchases could continue.

Those statements establish a postponed plan, not a guarantee that every store, country or legacy account still offers the same app. Store listings and entitlement rules can change independently. Verify the app name, developer account, subscription seller and expiry date shown on your own device before deleting Freedome or buying a second subscription.

What a third-party review status means

TheBestVPN’s January 25, 2026 article describes Freedome as no longer actively maintained or reviewed under that publisher’s standards. That is the publisher’s review status, not an official F-Secure shutdown notice. The official community response is the stronger evidence for the postponement, while the live product and store pages determine what you can actually install or renew in your market.

Which app and subscription do I have?

You can usually identify the relevant product without cancelling anything. Use the receipt and the app’s account screen together, because an app installed from an app store may be billed by that store while a web purchase is tied to an F-Secure account.

What you see What it most likely means What to verify next
App name says F-Secure VPN and the purchase was made on F-Secure’s website You are using the current marketed offering. Check the account page for plan length, covered devices, renewal date and renewal price.
App name says FREEDOME VPN and billing appears in Apple or Google subscriptions You may still be on the standalone legacy app; the postponed migration means it was not necessarily forced into the new client. Open the store’s subscription record and confirm whether it is active in your country before changing apps.
Freedome is installed but no active entitlement appears The installation may be expired, signed into a different account or affected by a store-side entitlement issue. Record the account email, receipt and expiry date, then use F-Secure support rather than purchasing again immediately.
Your receipt names a bundle or a different F-Secure product VPN access may be an included component rather than a standalone Freedome subscription. Read the bundle’s device and renewal terms; do not assume the standalone app’s terms apply.

Do not uninstall a working legacy client solely because an older end-of-life date appears in a search result. First confirm that the replacement app is available for your operating system and that your entitlement transfers in your region.

What platforms and protocols does F-Secure VPN support?

RTINGS describes F-Secure VPN as a straightforward service with applications for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. In its review, RTINGS reports support for Hydra, WireGuard and OpenVPN, plus no data-usage limit. These are the reviewer’s documented product findings; app generations and current store listings can change, so check the installation page for your exact version.

Area Evidence reported by RTINGS Practical implication
Desktop apps Windows and macOS applications Suitable for common personal computers, subject to current version requirements.
Mobile apps Android and iOS applications Phone and tablet coverage is available in the reviewed product line; confirm the store listing in your country.
Protocols Hydra, WireGuard and OpenVPN You have more than one protocol choice, which can help when a network behaves poorly with a particular option.
Data allowance RTINGS reports no data-usage limit The service is not presented in that review as a capped monthly allowance.

RTINGS published its review on May 13, 2026 and updated its test bench on July 13, 2026. Those dates identify the evidence window; they do not promise that a later app update has identical menus or defaults.

How well do leak protection and the kill switch work?

RTINGS reported IP and DNS leak protection and a functional kill switch in its assessment. Those controls are the baseline features that prevent a VPN disconnect from silently exposing your normal address or sending DNS requests outside the tunnel, but they do not make every privacy risk disappear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the reported protections cover

  • IP-leak protection: intended to keep the public address visible to a website associated with the VPN connection rather than your ordinary connection.
  • DNS-leak protection: intended to route name lookups through the protected connection instead of the network’s ordinary resolver.
  • Kill switch: intended to block traffic when the tunnel drops, depending on the platform and the setting selected.
  • Protocol choice: Hydra, WireGuard and OpenVPN give users alternatives when compatibility or policy differs between networks.

RTINGS’ findings are not a substitute for checking your own device after installation. A kill switch can be disabled, limited to certain traffic or behave differently during an operating-system transition. If exposure during a short disconnect would be serious, confirm the setting after every major app or operating-system update.

What privacy and security limitations did RTINGS identify?

RTINGS also flagged meaningful limitations: TLS/BGP-related concerns, issues in its assessment of data handling and policies, and no independent privacy or security audits in the review. These points are why a basic feature checklist alone does not make F-Secure VPN a clear privacy leader.

Finding How to interpret it Question to ask before buying
TLS/BGP-related concerns RTINGS identified network-security concerns in its testing and analysis. The finding is specific to that review and should not be rewritten as proof that every connection is compromised. Is the risk acceptable for the sites, accounts and networks you intend to use?
Data-handling and policy issues RTINGS found policy or handling details it considered problematic. Read the current privacy documentation for the jurisdiction and account type that apply to you. Do the stated collection, retention and disclosure practices fit your threat model?
No independent audit in RTINGS’ assessment The review did not find an independent privacy or security audit to validate the provider’s claims. Do you require third-party verification rather than provider documentation alone?

RTINGS published these conclusions; this article does not claim to have reproduced its tests. The absence of an audit in that assessment is not proof that no audit exists anywhere, but it is a material gap in the evidence available to a buyer using this review.

What does F-Secure VPN cost, and what happens at renewal?

There is no reliable one-price answer for every reader. F-Secure’s product page displays subscription and renewal offers, but the retrieved information does not provide a complete, stable regional price table. Currency, term length, device allowance, trial wording and renewal amount must be read from the live checkout for your market.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 30-day wording

One displayed offer says, “After 30 days your subscription will renew automatically for one year.” That sentence applies to the offer in which it appears. It should not be treated as a universal trial length or renewal rule for every country, plan or purchase channel.

Record these details before paying

  • Country and currency: make sure the checkout is using your billing country, not a location inferred from a VPN connection.
  • First-term price: note whether the amount is promotional, introductory or the ordinary recurring rate.
  • Term: record whether the purchase covers one month, one year or another period.
  • Device count: confirm how many devices the displayed plan covers and whether that count applies simultaneously.
  • Trial length: copy the exact number of days shown beside the offer you selected.
  • Renewal price and date: save the amount and date shown immediately before confirmation.
  • Cancellation and refund rules: check whether the web seller or an app store handles cancellation and which deadline applies.

Save the confirmation email and a screenshot of the checkout summary. If the price changes at renewal, those records make it easier to distinguish a disclosed recurring charge from an incorrect billing event.

Is F-Secure VPN a good deal for your use case?

It can be reasonable value when you want a simple multi-platform VPN, no reported data cap and mainstream protocol choices, and you are comfortable evaluating the privacy caveats yourself. It is a poor fit if independent privacy verification, the strongest documented assurance or a specific unblocking result is your primary requirement.

It may fit when

  • You need one familiar app family across Windows, macOS, Android and iOS.
  • You value a conventional kill switch and IP/DNS leak controls.
  • You want to choose among Hydra, WireGuard and OpenVPN instead of being locked to one protocol.
  • You are migrating from a Freedome subscription and can confirm that the current app accepts your entitlement.
  • The live regional checkout remains attractive after you include the renewal price, not just the introductory amount.

Look elsewhere when

  • Your decision depends on an independently audited privacy or security program.
  • The TLS/BGP and policy concerns reported by RTINGS conflict with your threat model.
  • You need a feature or performance claim that the available evidence does not establish, such as a particular streaming, torrenting, speed or unblocking result.
  • Your legacy app-store subscription cannot be matched clearly to the current F-Secure account and support cannot confirm the transition.

Do not call it a “deal” solely because the first charge is low. Compare the complete first term and renewal term in your currency, then assign weight to privacy evidence and migration certainty according to what you are protecting.

How should I buy or renew without creating a duplicate subscription?

Use a short verification sequence before committing. It avoids paying twice when a legacy store subscription is still active.

  1. Open the installed VPN’s account or subscription screen. Write down the account identifier, expiry date and app name.
  2. Check the seller. Determine whether billing is through F-Secure’s website, Apple, Google or another store. The cancellation and refund path follows that seller.
  3. Check the current product page in your own region. Read the displayed currency, term, device count, trial, renewal amount and refund language.
  4. Sign in before purchasing. Use the F-Secure account that should receive the entitlement; do not create a second account just to see a price.
  5. Compare dates. If the old subscription has time remaining, ask support whether it can be transferred or whether a new purchase would overlap it.
  6. Save proof. Keep the receipt, renewal date and checkout terms with your account records.
  7. Install only after entitlement is clear. On a migration, confirm that the replacement client recognizes the subscription before removing the old one.

The product page is the clear direct purchase and renewal route identified for the current service. No evidence establishes a separate physical product that would be a meaningful substitute for this software subscription.

What should I do if Freedome still shows an end-of-life notice?

First distinguish an old notification from an actual loss of entitlement. F-Secure said the notifications were put on hold, but that does not guarantee that every stale message, store listing or regional account state was updated.

  • Update the app from the same store that supplied it, then restart the device.
  • Confirm that you are signed into the account used for the original purchase.
  • Check the store’s subscription page separately from the VPN app.
  • Capture the exact warning, app version, operating system and expiry date.
  • Contact F-Secure support with the receipt before buying a replacement subscription.

If support confirms that your account must move, ask which current app, login method and plan terms apply. Keep the old receipt because an app-store purchase may be governed by different cancellation or refund rules than a direct web purchase.

How does F-Secure VPN compare with another VPN?

A fair comparison needs more than a server-count or discount headline. Use the same checks for every candidate and keep legacy Freedome access separate from the current app.

Comparison axis What to verify
App coverage Supported operating systems, current app name, minimum versions and whether your existing account works in that client.
Security controls Protocol options, kill-switch behavior, IP/DNS leak protection and any platform-specific limitations.
Privacy evidence Current policy, data-handling explanation, independent audits and the scope and date of any testing.
Commercial terms Regional first-term price, renewal price, device allowance, trial conditions and cancellation/refund route.
Use-case evidence Only count streaming, torrenting, speed or unblocking claims when they are documented for the relevant date, location and test conditions.
Migration risk Whether you need the legacy Freedome app, the current F-Secure app or a confirmed entitlement transfer.

That framework prevents a low introductory price from hiding an expensive renewal or a privacy gap that matters more than an extra protocol.

Final verdict: how good is the 2026 deal?

F-Secure VPN is a straightforward, broadly supported VPN with the baseline protections and protocol choices many everyday users expect. The deal is only good after you verify the exact regional checkout and accept the limitations RTINGS documented: TLS/BGP-related concerns, data-handling and policy issues, and no independent audit identified in its assessment.

For a Freedome user, the decisive step is confirming your own app and billing channel. The postponed migration means you should not assume that a legacy subscription has already moved, expired or acquired the current app’s terms. Treat the name as a product transition, not as a universal account migration, and make the purchase decision from the live offer that applies to your country.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep using a Freedome subscription bought through an app store?

The accepted F-Secure Community response said app-store purchases could continue when migration was postponed. Availability can still differ by country and store, so check the store subscription record and the app’s entitlement before making any change.

Does the 30-day statement mean every F-Secure VPN customer gets a free month?

No. “After 30 days your subscription will renew automatically for one year” was shown for one particular offer. Trial length and renewal wording can vary by displayed plan, market and purchase channel.

Does this review prove that F-Secure VPN is unsafe?

No. RTINGS reported specific concerns and missing independent audit evidence, alongside functioning leak protection and a kill switch. Whether those limitations are acceptable depends on the sensitivity of your use and the assurance you require.

Can I use the same F-Secure VPN account on every device?

The reviewed product line has Windows, macOS, Android and iOS apps, but the number of covered devices is plan-dependent. Confirm the allowance and current app compatibility in your regional checkout and account page.
