First identify the game. EXODUS is the upcoming single-player, third-person sci-fi action-adventure RPG from Archetype Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast. Its official FAQ lists an April 7, 2027 launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Epic Games Store, but does not yet publish a PC graphics-settings menu, PC requirements table or benchmark profile. Metro Exodus is the released game with documented PC performance analysis. The settings workflow below therefore applies to Metro Exodus, while the EXODUS section explains what is and is not known until its PC build is available.

They are separate games, so settings advice for one cannot be transferred automatically to the other. The official EXODUS FAQ describes EXODUS as a future sci-fi RPG and currently gives no live PC menu, requirements or performance data. Metro Exodus is the existing title covered by PC graphics analyses and is the game for which the practical optimization steps in this guide are relevant.

Which Metro Exodus edition do I have?
Confirm whether your installation is the original release or the Enhanced Edition before changing settings. Their menus and ray-tracing behavior are not guaranteed to match. The advice below treats edition, driver and hardware as variables rather than assuming one universal preset.
Which settings usually improve FPS the most?

MSI’s 2026 guidance summarizes the ordering: raising resolution and ray tracing costs the most, while upscaling and frame generation can recover performance. Treat that as a prioritization rule, not a promised percentage for your system.
How should I prepare before changing Metro Exodus settings?
Write down the system and target first. Without that baseline, a setting change cannot be judged fairly.
- GPU and VRAM: record the exact model and available VRAM.
- CPU and RAM: note the processor and installed memory.
- Display: record resolution and refresh rate.
- Edition: identify the original release or Enhanced Edition.
- Target: choose a sustainable frame-rate goal that suits the display and the way you play.
Use the game’s benchmark if the installed version provides one. Otherwise, select a repeatable demanding scene and make the same route or camera movement after every change. Record average FPS, frame-time behavior when your overlay exposes it, image artifacts and input responsiveness. Apple’s WWDC21 graphics-performance session uses Metro Exodus as a case study in measurement and profiling; it does not establish one preset that fits every computer.

How do I tune Metro Exodus step by step?
Change one major lever at a time, return to the same scene, and keep the highest image quality that meets your target.
- Set a baseline. Load the repeatable scene or built-in benchmark with your current settings. Note average FPS, visible hitching, ghosting, shimmer and control response.
- Check the output resolution. Keep native resolution if it meets the target. If it does not, test the game’s internal render-scale control or a supported upscaler before lowering many unrelated settings.
- Choose an upscaling mode. Compare the modes exposed by your edition at the same scene. Inspect thin geometry, foliage, moving objects and distant detail for softness, shimmer or ghost trails.
- Test ray tracing deliberately. Record the available ray-tracing levels, then compare the highest level you can sustain with a lower level and with ray tracing disabled if necessary. Verify the menu in your edition instead of assuming the original and Enhanced Edition offer identical switches.
- Test DLSS when it is actually exposed. On a supported NVIDIA configuration, compare the DLSS modes shown by the game or driver. NVIDIA’s App documentation lists Metro Exodus among titles with DLSS override support, but the available options depend on driver and app state and do not guarantee identical behavior in every edition.
- Test FSR only when the game build provides it. AMD states that FSR 3 requires developer integration and is available in select games. A compatible GPU alone does not prove that your Metro Exodus installation exposes FSR. If it is present, compare its quality modes for detail stability and frame-time consistency.
- Adjust the Quality preset. After resolution, upscaling and ray tracing are settled, move the preset down one level and measure. PC Gamer’s technical analysis found that Metro Exodus exposes nine graphics settings and that Quality changes multiple underlying image-quality systems. Its 2019 testing reported up to a 70–80% framerate increase when moving from Ultra to Low, depending on GPU and other settings; that historical range is not a guarantee for a current PC.
- Fine-tune secondary options. If your menu exposes motion blur, shading rate, tessellation, foliage or related controls, change them individually after the expensive levers. Some settings have little measurable performance effect, so keep them high when their visual benefit is important and the measurement shows no meaningful cost.
- Compare graphics APIs. Test DX12 and DX11 using the same scene and settings. PC Gamer saw no benefit from DX11 on its tested hardware but warned that older hardware may behave differently. Treat the API as a compatibility experiment, not a universal optimization.
- Set a sustainable cap. If the system can exceed your target but delivery is uneven, cap FPS at a value it can hold in demanding scenes. Choose the game or driver synchronization option that fits your display; the available latency and synchronization behavior depends on the configuration, so there is no single evidence-backed cap for every player.
Should I turn ray tracing off in Metro Exodus?
Turn it down or off when its GPU cost prevents the frame-rate consistency you want. Ray tracing is one of the most expensive general graphics levers, and Metro Exodus technical analysis specifically identifies its performance cost.
Start by comparing the ray-tracing levels your edition actually lists. If a lower level preserves the look you want while meeting the target, keep it; otherwise disabling ray tracing is a defensible performance choice, particularly on the original release. Measure in a demanding scene rather than judging from a quiet corridor, because the cost varies with the scene and the rest of your settings.
Is DLSS or FSR better for Metro Exodus?
Neither is universally better. The correct choice is the mode your installed edition exposes that delivers the cleanest image and most consistent frame times on your hardware.
When DLSS is available
Test the DLSS modes shown by the game or NVIDIA software at a fixed resolution and ray-tracing level. Look for stable fine detail, limited ghosting and responsive controls. NVIDIA’s documented Metro Exodus DLSS override support concerns the NVIDIA App and depends on the current driver and application state, so it should not be read as a promise that every edition exposes every override.

When FSR is available
AMD’s documentation lists FSR 3 frame generation for Radeon RX 5000 Series and newer and FSR 3 upscaling for Radeon RX 590 and newer. It also states that FSR 3 requires developer integration and is available in select games. Therefore, check the actual Metro Exodus menu first; GPU support by itself is insufficient.
How should image quality be compared?
- Compare native rendering with the upscaled output at the same display resolution.
- Inspect foliage, wires, thin geometry and distant textures while moving the camera.
- Check for ghosting behind moving objects and shimmer on fine patterns.
- Confirm that the gain persists in the demanding scene, not just in an easy area.
Why can Metro Exodus stutter when average FPS looks high?
Average FPS is an incomplete measure. A high average can hide uneven frame delivery, short stalls or a demanding scene that the average smooths away.
Use a repeatable route and inspect frame-time behavior when your measurement overlay provides it. Compare the worst-feeling moments, not only the headline average. A lower but stable cap can feel smoother than an uncapped rate that oscillates sharply. Also check whether an API change, upscaler mode or ray-tracing level alters the hitching separately from the average FPS.
When evaluating frame generation, judge responsiveness against the base rendered frame rate as well as the displayed rate. The technology is conditional on game integration and can produce artifacts; it is not a substitute for making the underlying render workload reasonable.

- Enable and compare a supported DLSS or FSR quality mode.
- Move the Quality preset down one step and measure.
- Reduce secondary options such as foliage, tessellation or shading rate only when the menu exposes them and the measurement shows a useful gain.
- Test the alternate graphics API if compatibility or frame pacing remains poor.
PC Gamer’s historical result illustrates why the broad Quality preset can matter: its Ultra-to-Low change produced an up-to-70–80% framerate increase on some tested configurations. Because that result depended on GPU and other options, use it as evidence of sensitivity, not as an expected outcome.

Keep native resolution and the highest ray-tracing level that remains stable, then use the Quality preset and upscaler modes to trade small visual differences for headroom. A fast GPU still benefits from a repeatable demanding-scene check because VRAM, CPU limits, driver version and edition can change the bottleneck.
As a historical reference, PC Gamer reported 49 FPS at 4K Ultra on an RTX 2080 Ti and 31 FPS with Ultra ray tracing in its 2019 test. Those figures describe that test system and period, not a current guarantee. They demonstrate why ray tracing can change the result substantially even when the rest of the settings remain constant.

How do hardware, drivers and the scene change the result?
There is no single Metro Exodus preset that works everywhere. GPU model and VRAM, CPU capacity, resolution, driver, edition and the particular scene all affect the bottleneck. A setting that is cheap on one GPU can become expensive on another, and an API that behaves similarly on modern hardware may differ on older hardware.
- GPU-limited: resolution, ray tracing and upscaling mode usually deserve attention first.
- CPU- or scene-limited: lowering resolution may produce little improvement, so compare frame times while changing CPU-sensitive secondary options.
- VRAM-constrained: texture and Quality choices may matter more than a small resolution change, but keep the change tied to an observed symptom rather than assuming a cause.
- Edition-specific: do not assume a toggle, preset or ray-tracing path exists in both releases.
How do I know the optimization is finished?
Stop when the target is sustained in the demanding scene, frame delivery is consistent, controls remain responsive and image artifacts are acceptable. Save the final settings and the baseline notes so a driver update or edition change can be compared against a known configuration.

If one change improves the average but introduces obvious ghosting, shimmer or uneven delivery, reject it. The practical goal is the best image quality that meets the target consistently, not the largest number shown by an overlay.
